Janet H. Britt

WALTON — Janet H. Britt, 87, of Unadilla, formerly of Walton, died Thursday evening, Feb. 20, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, after a long illness.

Mrs. Britt was born in Cortland, the daughter of James and Louise Holden Hammond on Jan. 28, 1916.

On June 27, 1945, she married Fred Britt. He died Dec. 12, 2001.

She was last employed as a clerk at Lane's Drug Store in Walton.

Mrs. Britt was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church, Walton, and of the Episcopal Church Women for many years.

She is survived by one daughter and her husband, Barbara L. and William Sperry of Unadilla; a sister-in-law, Helen Hammond of Cortland; two nieces and one nephew.

She was predeceased by her husband, Fred, and a brother, James Hammond.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, in the Christ Episcopal Church, Walton, with the Rev. Suzanne L. Cole officiating. There are no calling hours.

Burial will take place in Walton Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church or the American Lung Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home in Walton.

Harold Travis

ROSEBOOM — Harold Travis of Roseboom passed away Feb. 17, 2003. He was 78.

Harold was born March 30, 1924, the son of David and Nellie Miller Travis.

Harold is survived by daughters, Barbara Salvatore and Joyce Bollmann; son, David Travis; a brother, Raymond; two sisters, Nellie Kenny and June Marks; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held on Feb. 22, 2003, at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home in Montrose. Interred in Hillside Cemetery in Cortlandt Manor.

Catherine Russell

WALTON — Catherine Russell, a lifelong Walton resident, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, in Binghamton. She was 90.

Mrs. Russell was born March 26, 1912, in Walton, to John and Claribel Leal Gilchrist.

She graduated from Walton High School and earned a teaching certificate from Oneonta Normal School.

She was married in Walton on Aug. 1, 1940, to Robert A. Russell. He predeceased her on Dec. 27, 1995.

Mrs. Russell was a faithful member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Walton, were she taught Sabbath school for many years, and the West Brook Missionary Society. She taught at the District 10 school house prior to her marriage.

She and her husband, Robert Russell, operated a farm and boarding house, "Russell's Wayside Rest," on the Walton-Franklin Road for over 50 years.

Mrs. Russell was known for her hospitality to many who came from New York City to enjoy some time in the country. Visiting pastors and missionaries were always welcome as was anyone who needed a meal or a place to stay.

Catherine Russell is survived by her children, Marilyn and Lawrence Compeau, Philadelphia, N.Y., Hartley and Marilyn Russell and Renwick and Candice Russell, Walton, and Virginia Russell, Syracuse; sisters, Dorothy Miller, Walton, and Anna Mae Stewart, Malone; and a sister-in-law, Isabel Gilchrist; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Blanche Gilchrist; and brothers, Clarence and Howard Gilchrist.

Friends may call Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, at the corner of North and Delaware Streets in Walton.

The funeral service is Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Reformed Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Bruce and East Streets in Walton, with Dr. Robert L. La May officiating.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery in the spring.

Contributions to the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Walton in her name would be appreciated.

Gail V. Thorington

GRAND GORGE — Gail V. Thorington, 57, of Grand Gorge, passed away Feb. 23, 2003, at her residence.

She was born April 29, 1945, in Rockaway Beach, the daughter of George Merritt Keep and Jeane Kane.

She married David Thorington on July 22, 1984, in Stamford.

She was employed as an ARC instructor in Schoharie. Gail was very artistic, and was well-known for her delicious and beautifully decorated cakes.

She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, Stamford.

She is survived by her husband, David Thorington, Grand Gorge; one son, Christopher Fairbairn, Margaretville; two daughters, Elaine Cairns and husband, Donald, East Cobleskill, and Dawn Elizabeth Wetmore and husband, Eric, Wynantskill; two stepsons and wives, James and Chrissy Thorington and Gary and Kerry Thorington; six grandchildren, Crystal, Shari, Deanna, Desarie, Kyle and Kendall; and one sister, Merrill Hillis, Hobart.

There will be no calling hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Contributions may be made in memory of Gail Thorington to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Anthony V. Palmer

SCHENEVUS — Anthony V. Palmer, 91, died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Mr. Palmer was born Aug. 14, 1911, in White Plains, the son of the late John and Mamie (Telesco) Palmer.

He was retired from Exxon Corp., Pelham, in 1973. He moved to Schenevus five years ago from Port Chester.

He was a Taxi Commissioner in Port Chester, the president of several Port Chester bowling leagues and a member of the Old Timers.

He is survived by wife, Ruth Palmer, of Schenevus; one son, Daniel Palmer and Leslie Xabier of Brewster; stepson, Anthony and wife, Vern Calascibetta, of Morganville, N.J.; grandchildren, Anthony and wife, Debbie Palmer, of Robbinsville, N.J., Jessica Palmer of Port Chester, Allyson and Jenna Calascibetta of Morganville, N.J., Brooke and Jeri Salti of Morganville, N.J., Dana Xabier of Port Chester and Joseph Xabier of Virginia; two great-grandsons, Anthony and Daniel Palmer; a brother, Joseph Palmer of Stuart, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Jessica, two brothers and a sister.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Schenevus, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant.

Burial will be in the Schenevus Cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Sara M. Braisland

SIDNEY — Sara M. Braisland, 99, a resident at the Gilmour Health Care Facility in Norwich, passed away Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, in Norwich.

She was born Oct. 25, 1903, in the town of Hardenburgh, the daughter of the late Verner and Harriet Kelly Marks.

Sara was educated in a one-room school, attended high school in Margaretville, and graduated from the Walton High School and Walton Teachers Training Class. She taught in two one-room schools.

On Nov. 24, 1927, she married Virgil D. Braisland in Arena. He predeceased her on Feb. 14, 1998.

Mr. and Mrs. Braisland had lived in Walton, Guilford, on a farm in Bundy Hollow, town of Masonville, eight years in Sidney, and for the past year Sara had lived at the Gilmour Health Care Facility in Norwich.

In the 1940s, Sara helped organize the first school lunch program and the P.T.A. at the Guilford Central School. She was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Guilford United Methodist Church. Sara taught Sunday school in both churches.

She was also a member of the Sidney Chapter of the DAR and the Lafayette Chapter of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Benjamin Shaw, Sidney; granddaughter and husband, Maria and Robert Newell, Sidney; grandson and wife, Dr. Stephen and Beth Shaw, Altamont; three great-grandchildren, Megan, Joshua and Matthew Newell; brother-in-law, Walter Braisland, Walton; a niece, six nephews and numerous cousins.

Three sisters, Millicent Buerge, Harriet Mann and Ruth Marks predeceased Sara.

Friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 26, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of funeral and committal services at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, from the Sidney United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be later in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sidney United Methodist Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, N.Y. 13838 or to the Sidney Memorial Public Library, Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Robert J. Kosturock

MILFORD — Mr. Robert Joseph Kosturock Sr., 61, passed away at his home in Unadilla on Feb. 18, 2003, from a heart attack.

He was born in Franklin, N.J., on Feb. 24, 1941, a son of Joseph and Mary (Gancarik) Kosturock.

Bob had retired from over 20 years of dedicated service at New York State Electric and Gas, where he worked as a welder and first class pipe fitter.

He is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Storms of New Jersey; a daughter, Renee Hendricks of South Carolina; three sons, Robert J. Kosturock Jr. of Maine, Mark A. Kosturock of Milford, and Daryl Kosturock of Mississippi; and 10 grandchildren.

Friends of the family are welcome to attend a memorial service to be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford, with the Rev. Robert Kazinski, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Milford, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Barbara S. Holling

ONEONTA — Barbara S. Holling, 60, of Oneonta died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born March 21, 1942, in Oneonta to Ralph K. and Ruth Myers Simmons. Barbara graduated from Oneonta in the Class of 1960.

She married Ernest Holling at the Unitarian Church in Oneonta on Dec. 10, 1960.

Barbara worked for the Learning Center of Laurens Central School District as a LTA until she had to go into the hospital for the final time. She was president of the Civil Service Employees Association Union and was president of the Parent Teacher Organization of Riverside School for five years. She was a member of the Elm Park Methodist Church where she was a former youth leader, had been a Girl Scout troop leader and had worked with her husband as a Boy Scout leader. She wrote poetry for her family and enjoyed making crafts such as large, lighted Christmas balls and painting Ernest's woodworking figures to be given to family and friends. She loved spending time in her flower beds, feeding the birds and collecting angels and Geisha dolls.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Ernest J. Holling of Oneonta; daughter, Jo Anne Holling of Oneonta; son, Ralph John "Bud" Holling of Oneonta; granddaughter, Jennifer Michelle Holling-Blake to whom she was mom; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law Donald and Nancy Holling of Horseheads, N.Y., Marjorie Holling of Oneonta and Ruth Holling of Schenevus, and her cat "Midnight."

Calling hours will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the family present.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Laurens Central School District, Main Street, Laurens, NY 13796 in Barbara's honor.

Interment will be in the spring in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Joseph Zenner

OTEGO — Joseph Carl Zenner Jr., 74, of Otego died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

He was born Aug. 13, 1928, in Niskayuna, N.Y., the son of Joseph Carl Sr. and Frances J. (Gahagan) Zenner.

Joe lived in Niskayuna. for 47 years and then moved to Otego where he lived for the past 28 years.

On April 26, 1952, he married Rose M. Seamon in Richfield Springs. They had been married for 50 years.

Joe worked with his father in the gas station business for 31 years in Niskayuna until he moved to Otego and ran his own gas station for 12 years. Before retiring, Joe drove school bus for the Otego Central School for eight years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Zenner of Otego; two children, son, Carl R. of Otego and daughter, Ruth A. of Mesa, Ariz.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Gertrude McLeod of Ballston Spa; one brother, John Zenner of Schenectady, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch officiating.

Burial will be Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Schenectady.

Calling hours will be offered on Sunday, Feb. 23, at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

John R. Hood

DELHI — John R. Hood, a resident of Delhi, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at the age of 67, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, N.Y.

He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on May 4, 1935, the son of Harold and Katherine (Marks) Hood.

John attended St. Peter's grade school and Lattimer Junior High in Pittsburgh. After school he worked as a copy boy for the Pittsburgh Press. He also did residential and commercial painting with his father. He tended bar at Chuck's Tavern in Pittsburgh and at the Country Tavern and the Meredith Inn in Delhi. John joined the Pittsburgh Tile Setters Local and worked construction there and at many places in Albany and the Delhi College. He was employed at the Department of Social Services for several years before retiring.

John belonged to the YMCA in Oneonta and the Club Royal in Walton. He enjoyed parties in his back yard with family and friends. He was a loving husband and loved swimming with his grandchildren.

Survivors include a brother "Hal" and wife Linda; a nephew Shawn and his wife Andrea and their children Zachery and Emily, all of Pittsburgh, Pa.; also stepchildren Nadine and Tim Shampine, Dennis and MaryAnne West, Leonard West; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of Delhi, as well as many nieces and nephews.

His wife of 37 years, Betty, predeceased him on Nov. 20, 2002.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, Feb. 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home, 131 Main St., Delhi.

Burial will take place at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, in the spring.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Delhi Fire Department Emergency Medical Squad or the Humane Society of Delaware County, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Timothy L. Scott

MOUNT UPTON — Timothy Linn Scott, 43, of Mount Upton, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at his home.

He was born Dec. 30, 1959, son of Flora Knowlton Scott.

Tim graduated from Sidney High School and was employed as an auto body technician for Deforest Body Shop in Mount Upton. Tim's real love was music. He played guitar and bass for several classic rock bands for the last 20 years. Tim was currently playing with Rampage locally.

He is survived by Flora Scott, Kathy Richardson Scott, Timothy Scott, Danielle Scott, Lee Goeboler, Takiya Goebeler, Terra Groblesky, Jordan Groblesky all of Sidney and Linda Johnson of Mount Upton, and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 24, at 3 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The Rev. Randall Eliason, pastor of the Assembly of God in Sidney, will officiate.

Friends may call Monday prior to the service. The family will be in attendance beginning at 1 p.m..

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made in Tim's name to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 East Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.
