Byron M. Jackson

ROTTERDAM — Byron M. Jackson, 81, of Princetown Road, died on Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at St. Clares Hospital after a short illness.

Born in Walton, Byron served with the Army during World War II.

He worked as a welder at the General Electric Company for over 30 years, retiring in 1982.

Byron was devoted to his family, loved to take walks and play horse shoes and was a former member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Emma Jackson (Abbott); two children, Sandra and William Paurowski Jr. of Rotterdam, and Bonnie and Jim Lawyer of Rotterdam; five brothers, Arthur, Robert, Lewis, Bernard and Harry Jackson; five sisters, Dorothy Smith, Mary Miskell, Phyllis Skokan, Betty Hunt and Shirley Rhinebeck; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Earl and Margaret Jackson; a daughter, Patricia Hebert; three brothers, Earl, Raymond and Keith Jackson Sr.; and two sisters, Pauline Powers and Mildred Adkins.

Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Thursday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m., with funeral services held on Friday morning at 11 a.m. at the Bond Funeral Home, Broadway and Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady.

Spring interment will be in Viewland Cemetery.

Contributions may be made for Mr. Jackson in the memory of Patricia Hebert to the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Road, Albany, N.Y. 12205.

Sebastian C. Ross

ONEONTA — Sebastian C. "Tom" Ross, 94, of Oneonta, passed away on Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born May 20, 1908, in Utica, the son of Michael and Pasqualina (Davi) Ross.

He married Lillian A. Chickering on Jan. 1, 1941, at St. Mary's Church in Oneonta. She died on May 17, 1980.

Tom grew up in Oneonta and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1927. He played the clarinet in the school orchestra and band and in the Company G National Guard marching band.

He attended the Delaware & Hudson Railroad School of Telegraphy in Saratoga, graduating in 1929. He took courses in Telegraphy, Station Agency and Towerman.

He went to work on the D&H Railroad in 1930, on the Susquehanna Division as a telegrapher, station agent and towerman. In 1941, he was promoted to train dispatcher running trains from Wilkes-Barre, Pa., to Montreal. He retired from D&H RR in 1976, after 46 years of service working in Oneonta, Albany and Watervliet.

In 1933, Tom became an amateur radio operator. His call was W8KEL in the 8th District and W2KEK when the FCC changed him to the 2nd District. He built his own transmitter and receivers, and worked stations all over the world in radio code. In 1983, after moving back to Oneonta, his call became KA2QHL. He also enjoyed his computer and packet radio.

He joined the U.S. Naval Communication Reserves 3rd Naval District in 1933. He was Unit Commander for six counties (Otsego, Delaware, Chenango, Broome, Tioga and Chemung) and a Chief Radioman. He received an honorable discharge on Dec. 14, 1937.

He was active with the Boy Scouts for 10 years at the Bugbee School in Oneonta, serving as a Cub Master and an Assistant Scoutmaster. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Oneonta Amateur Radio Club, the Capital District Pensioners Club, the Bridge Line Historical Society of the D&H RR, The Italian American Club (President in 1960 and 1961), and was a member of the American Train Dispatcher Association in the Oneonta, Albany and Watervliet offices from 1950 to 1976, for which he received a 50 year pin in 1993. During that period, he also served as its chairman for several years.

He is survived by two children, Thomas M. and his wife, Dorcas, Ross of Oneonta, and Dorothy A. Dann of Swedesboro, N.J.; his grandchildren, David Ross and wife, Tracy, and their son, Matthew, of Oneonta, and Julia Dann Thompson and her husband, Greg, of Eden Prarie, Minn. He is also survived by a brother and a sister, Joseph Ross of Norwich and Mary Ross of Maryland; two sisters-in-law, Anne Ross Ward of Oneonta and Marion Chickering of Sidney; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother and two sisters, Americo Ross, Thomasine Morales and Catherine Ross.

Friends are invited to call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, on Wednesday evening, from 6 to 8 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Arrangements are with the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Clay Conover

UNADILLA — Clay Conover, 61, of 185 Sheep Penn Road, Unadilla, passed away unexpectedly Monday evening, Feb. 24, 2003, at his residence.

He was born April 5, 1941, in Corning, the son of the late William and Dorothy Black Conover.

On July 16, 1960, he married Sandra Alpi in Unadilla.

Clay was a Vice President of special markets for the Mead Corporation, Sidney. He retired Aug. 2, 2000, after completing 37 years with the company.

He was an active member of the Rods and Relics Auto Club, Gilbertsville.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Sandra Conover, Unadilla; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Tammy Conover, Bainbridge; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Patrick Stevens, Sidney; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Loucine Conover, Penn Yan; two grandsons, Gregory and Daylon; and a granddaughter, Kali. Clay was anticipating the arrival of his granddaughter, Daressa, in the spring. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive him.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Friday at the funeral chapel. Clay's family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be later in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 East Main St., Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Harris G. Clark Jr.

COOPERSTOWN — Harris G. Clark Jr. died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare surrounded by his loving family.

Harris was born Jan. 16, 1923, in Cooperstown, to Harris and Lillian (Bliss) Clark Sr.

He was married in Springfield Center on Dec. 25, 1943, to Evelyn M. McCarty. She predeceased him on April 24, 1986.

Harris was a lifelong resident of Cooperstown and graduated from Cooperstown Central School in 1940.

He was a Captain in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II as part of the 58th Bomb Wing 468 Bomb Group 792 Bomb Squadron 20th Air Force in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He attended Hancock College of Aeronautics in Santa Maria, Calif., and four-engine transition school in Hobbs, N.M. As a pilot of heavy bombers, he flew B17, B24 and B29 aircraft.

He served in the China Burma India Theater; the Central Burma, China and India-Burma Campaigns; and in the air offensive against Japan. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster. He was honorably discharged after serving from July 28, 1943, to Oct. 26, 1945.

Harris owned and operated a construction company and was responsible for building many local businesses and homes. His accomplishments include the Woodland Museum and many of the buildings at Sam Smith's Boatyard. He retired after working many years for Mrs. Joseph Campbell at Leatherstocking Farm.

He joined Otsego Lodge No. 138 in 1945. He was a member for over 50 years. During that time he served as Past Master of the Otsego Lodge No. 138 from 1994-1997. He also joined Otsego Chapter No. 26 Royal Arch Masons. He is the Senior Past High Priest of Otsego Chapter having served in 1954. He belonged to Otsego Council No. 87 Royal and Select Masters of the Cryptic Rite in Oneonta as well as Otsego Commandery No. 76 in Cooperstown. He was also a member of the Valley Shrine Club.

He had many interests including dancing, listening to music, golfing, snowmobiling, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Wedocandors Hunting Club, National Rifle Association, Red Creek Valley Grange No. 1583, The American Legion Post No. 579 and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was happiest spending time with his wife and children. His family fondly remembers Sunday afternoon jeep rides and picnics in the woods overlooking Otsego Lake.

He is survived by his children and their families. He has four daughters and two sons, Linda I. and Ronald Pokorny of Cooperstown, Joan A. and Tad Mahoney of Bel Air, Md., Joyce L. and Louie (Spike) Boyd Jr. of Fly Creek, Karen S. Moakler and James DesRocher of Greenfield Center, Gordon K. and Nancy Clark of Cooperstown, and Alan H. and Alina Clark of Piscataway, N.J.

Harris is survived by his two brothers, Harold V. Clark and his wife, Joan, of Schenectady, and Robert J. Clark of Cooperstown; one sister, Lucille F. Roberts of Johnson City; and one sister-in-law, MaryAnn Clark of Fort Wayne, Ind.

Grandpa, also known as Beepa, will be dearly missed by his 11 grandchildren, Michale G. and Maggie Pokorny of Milford, Brian S. Pokorny of South Valley, Jennifer L. and Ron Mickle of Maryland, Shawn M. Pokorny of Cooperstown, Shannan M. Mahoney of Bel Air, Md., Shaun J. Mahoney of Bel Air, Md., Jacqueline I. Clark of Cooperstown, Susan E. Clark of Cooperstown, Eric M. Hanley of Freehold, N.J., Alan H. Clark Jr., of Piscataway, N.J., and Mitchell E. Clark of Piscataway, N.J.; his great-grandson, Andrew R. Pokorny of South Valley; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Douglas A. Clark, and sister, Winifred Irene Clark.

The family will receive friends between 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with Pastor Sell, of the Hartwick First Baptist Church, presiding.

Burial will be in the spring at the Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions can be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, or the charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Albert Brancaccio

MARGARETVILLE — The Rev. Father Albert Ernest Brancaccio Esq. SOLT died on Feb. 24, 2003, in Walton.

He was born April 21, 1919, to Alfonsina Lombardi and Anthony Brancaccio.

He became an attorney, and then married Marie Picone on June 14, 1947. Albert and Marie had two children, Albert Francis and Joan Marie, both of whom are surviving. Marie predeceased him March 1, 1988.

He served in the United States Army in Panama.

Albert studied for the priesthood at Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, Conn. He was ordained a Catholic priest of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity on June 5, 1993, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

He served at the mission church of the Holy Family in Downsville for several years.

He is survived by one sister, Virginia Buro; two brothers, Ralph H. Brancaccio, MD, and Armand Brancaccio, DDS; two grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer; as well as nieces and nephews.

Father Brancaccio's body will be welcomed to the Sacred Heart Church, Main Street, Margaretville, for viewing by the public from 2 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003.

Father Brancaccio's Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, 2003. Burial will take place at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Huntington, on Long Island.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Jean D. Harwood

DELHI — Jean Dreyfus Harwood, 81, of Delhi, passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 25, 2003, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

The daughter of Malcolm G. and Ruth Ann (Rutherford) Hotchkin, she was born May 29, 1921, in Kingston; was a 1939 graduate of Delaware Academy, Delhi, and married Lynn E. Dreyfus, March 13, 1943. Mr. Dreyfus was Delaware County Attorney at the time of his death Aug. 12, 1953. Jean later married Hubert A. Harwood, Dec. 30, 1961.

In early years, Jean was employed as a switchboard operator for Delhi Telephone Co. and, subsequently, study hall supervisor at Delaware Academy, later moving to Florida in 1973, where she was an emergency room secretary at Sarasota Memorial and Doctor's Hospitals for over 20 years until retirement, returning to Delhi in 1999.

With the exception of 26 years in Sarasota, she was a lifelong Delaware County resident and was a member of the Delhi Second Presbyterian Church and former Watauga Chapter, O.E.S.

Surviving are her husband, Hubert A. Harwood, Delhi; two daughters, Ann Dreyfus and Deborah Dreyfus, Saratoga Springs; a son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Patricia Dreyfus, Queensbury; a step-daughter, Susan Harwood, Albany; two granddaughters, Monica Schultz and Christine Eno; four great-grandchildren, Jenna, Alexa, Abigail and Ian; two sisters, Barbara (Jack) Hilson, Bovina Center, and Thelma Jackson, Norwich; a sister-in-law, Beulah Dreyfus, Delhi; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call on Friday at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 1, by the Rev. Paul Hartt.

The family will be present to receive friends one hour before the service and burial will be later in the Woodland Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Muriel Ivy Lent

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Muriel Ivy Lent "Molly," age 93, of River Street, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday morning, Feb. 26, 2003, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Ilion.

She was born on Oct. 24, 1909, in London, England, daughter of the late William and Ellen Holloway Cooper.

Molly was raised in England and graduated high school there. After completing high school she worked as a telephone operator in England.

It was during World War II that she met her husband to be, Louis B. Lent, who was serving with the United States Army. They were married on Feb. 24, 1945, in Winchester, England. Theirs was a loving and devoted union of 49 years until his passing on Aug. 23, 1994.

Mrs. Lent had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Episcopalian life. She was a member of Saint John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs.

She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are her two sons, Paul and his wife, Rosemarie, Lent of San Antonio, Texas, and Kevin Lent of Syracuse; one daughter, Christine and her husband, Leonard, Kraeger of Ilion; a sister-in-law, Helen Petriski; eight grandchildren, Christopher, Eric and Allyson Lent, Craig, Jeffery and Christie Kraeger, and Alex and Robert Williams; three great-grandchildren, Jared, Taylor Marie and Miranda Williams; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, on Saturday from 1 until 4 p.m. Funeral services with Holy Eucharist from the Book of Common Prayer will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Saint John's Episcopal Church in Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Dixon Bartle, Rector, officiating.

Mrs. Lent will be laid to rest in Lake View Cemetery, Richfield Springs, later this spring at a time to be announced.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Saint John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs or the Hospice of Herkimer and Oneida County. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.

Emma L. Howard

WESTKILL — Emma L. Howard, 87 years, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

Emma was born on April 2, 1915, in Spruceton, the 10th of 11 children of Edmund and Lilly (Dunham) Simmons.

She was married Nov. 2, 1937, to Fred E. Howard, until his passing on April 21, 1982.

She lived most of her life in Westkill, and was a longtime member of the Lexington U.M. Church and many organizations including Lexington Ladies Auxiliary, Health Club, Ladies Aid, Westkill Community Hall Improvement Association, WAPJL Senior Citizens Club and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Her hobbies included crocheting and baking cookies. She was a very kind and caring person who touched the hearts of all she met, and was loved by all.

She is survived by her children, Freda J. Fancher and her husband, Ron, of Greenville, and Glenn E. Howard and his wife, Kathleen, of Westkill; four grandchildren, Pamela J. Dwyer and her husband, Tom, Rhonda L. Margiasso and her husband, Jim, of South Cairo, Shana Menia and her husband, Greg, and Stephanie Lollis and her husband, Chris, of Florida; nine great-grandchildren, Jessica, T.J. and Mitch Dwyer, Ryan and Martin Margiasso, Shelby Cone and Nicholas, Emily and Conner Menia.

Also surviving are two sisters, Harriet Speenburgh of Stamford, and Laura Rappleyea of Westkill; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Cunningham Funeral Home, Greenville. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Lexington U.M. Church, Lexington. Spring interment will be in the Westkill Community Cemetery.

Mary Ann Siegler

EAST ISLIP — Mary Ann Siegler, 88, most recently of East Islip, and formerly of Portlandville, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at the Little Flower Nursing Home in East Islip.

She was born Nov. 11, 1914, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Herbert and Charlotte (Werner) Shmidt.

She married Aloysius J. Siegler Jr. on May 28, 1936. He passed away on Jan. 1, 1983.

Mrs. Siegler was a homemaker for most of her life, except for a short period when she was employed by AARP in West Islip.

While living in this area, she was a member of St. Mary's Church in Oneonta.

She is survived by a son and his wife, Jerome A. and Virginia Siegler of Camillus; five grandchildren, Evelyn Lott of Syracuse, Carolyn Longley of Bohemia, Anthony Siegler of Hempstead, Jennifer Ferer of North Babylon, and Mark Siegler of Girard, Pa. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Saturday, March 1, at noon in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, on Saturday from 10 a.m. until departing for church at 11:30 a.m.

Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends are asked to consider St. Mary's School for memorial contributions.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
