Mary E. Stephan

DELHI — Mary Ellen Stephan, 88, passed away on Monday, Feb. 24, 2003.

She was born Mary Ellen Lees on May 24, 1914, in Philadelphia, Pa. She grew up in South Langhorne, Pa., and graduated from Langhorne High School in 1931. Following her graduation she worked as a legal secretary until her marriage in 1936 to William Stephan. They moved to Feasterville, Pa., in 1950, where they raised their daughter and created a beautiful home and garden for 37 years. They retired to Delhi in 1987. William predeceased Mary in 1988.

Mary was a talented, self-taught piano player, often entertaining friends and family at special occasions. For a number of years she played professionally at local events.

She was also an enthusiastic gardener, feeder of wild birds and advocate for the conservation of the natural world.

Another of Mary's passions was politics, about which she was extremely knowledgeable. She frequently shared this knowledge, together with her opinions, with her elected representatives and the public at large via newspaper and call-in radio. She never missed an election, a record of which she was proud.

Above all else Mary loved children, her dogs, her cats and her horses. She was the consummate "horse show mother," providing wonderful food, tireless encouragement, and endless "horse holding" for her daughter and the other children from "the barn."

She could bathe and groom a horse, lunge a horse, and drive a fast Standard bred fearlessly, but drew the line at riding, for reasons which remained obscure to all but her!

She was equally unfailing in her support of all the goals and dreams of her daughter, her nieces and her nephews, however unlikely these may have seemed at the time.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Linda (Lin) Stephan, of Hamden; her niece, Renee and husband, Milt Gray, of Egg Harbor, N.J.; her nephew, Dr. Roger and wife, Dr. Ruth Dunkle, of Edison, N.J.; her niece. Martha Morrison of Worcester, Mass.; her sister-in-law, Ida Francis of Philadelphia, Pa.; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2003, until service time at 3 p.m., with Ordained Lay Preacher Deb Fleming officiating, at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
