John B. Saccaro

STAMFORD — Mr. John B. Saccaro, 94, went home to be with his Savior on Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, after a brief illness.

He resided at Robinson Terrace Skilled Nursing Facility in Stamford.

John's parents moved to the United States from Italy when he was 4 years old.

After living for a brief time in Spring Valley, Ill., the family moved to Roxbury and began to farm. After years of dairy farming, growing cauliflower and raising heavy roasting chickens for the Kosher market in New York City, John retired and enjoyed traveling with his wife, Emma.

After 52 years of marriage, he laid his beloved Emma to rest. Their only son, Frank, also predeceased his father.

John is survived by his nieces and nephews.

He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

Friends may call on Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, beginning at 10 a.m. A funeral service will follow at the funeral home beginning at 11 a.m. with Pastor Waylen Bray officiating. Internment will follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Alvin W. White

EAST MEREDITH — Alvin W. White, 93, of Houghtaling Hollow, East Meredith, passed away suddenly Sunday evening, March 2, 2003, shortly after arrival at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

The son of Lowden and Louise (Schmidtt) White, he was born March 18, 1909, in East Rockaway, served in the U.S. Merchant Marine during World War II, and married Helen W. Malchow, April 22, 1933. Mrs. White died June 7, 1987.

A 45-year Delaware County resident, "Al" spent the first half of his life in East Rockaway where he worked with the sanitation department, coming to Delhi in 1958, where he was employed by the former Delaware Republican-Express until the newspaper ceased publication.

He moved to East Meredith in 1968, where he enjoyed assisting with the operation of his son's dairy farm and, subsequently, was employed for a number of years as a security officer at Delhi College, until retirement.

He was an active member and Elder of the Meridale Community Church.

Surviving are his son and a daughter-in-law, Robert A. and Patricia White, East Meredith; five grandchildren, Kathy Mullinnex, Lynn Caston, Toni and William Flamensfeld and Steven Robert White; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marion Mosebach, Hobart; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi; the family will be in attendance 7 to 9 p.m. today, and funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, by his pastor, the Rev. John Osterhout.

Memorial contributions may be made to Meridale Community Church or Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Edward A. Elliott

MORRIS — Edward A. Elliott, 84, of Morris, died Monday, March 3, 2003, with his family at his side.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family.

Expressions of sympathy may be made by a donation to the Morris Emergency Squad in his memory. The family requests no flowers, please.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Mary H. Crosby

ONEONTA — Mary H. Crosby, 66, of Oneonta, and formerly of Long Island, passed away Monday, March 3, 2003, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 10, 1936, in Oneonta, the daughter of Donald E. and Hilda (Hungerford) Hitchcock.

She is survived by her husband, Howard Crosby, of Oneonta. Her two sons and their spouses, Craig Francis Cook and his wife, Pattianne, of Orlando, Fla., and Thomas Gerard Cook and his wife, Tanya, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and her daughter, Stacey Ann Cook, at home. Also, two grandchildren survive her, Melanie Renee Cook and Christina Elizabeth Cook.

A special time to celebrate the life of Mary Crosby will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2003, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 6 until 8 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary's memory to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Broome-Tioga Special Olympics, P.O. Box 1766, Binghamton, NY 13902.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Robert Jorgensen

MARYLAND — Mr. Robert M. Jorgensen Sr., 58, of Maryland, passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 26, 2003.

He was born Jan. 23, 1945, in Oneonta, the son of Marius M. and Lena (Nichols) Jorgensen.

Bob spent most of his life in the Schenevus-Maryland area, graduating from Draper Central School in 1963. He spent some of his adult life in Indiana, driving trucks and delivering mobile homes to various areas. Then he owned B&J Bait and Tackle in Howe, Ind., retiring to this area around the summer of 1993. Upon doing so he started logging and, in later years, he owned and operated Jorgensen's Lumber Company.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and nature in general.

Survivors include his sons, Robert Jr. and his wife, Elise, and Mark, all of Middlefield; three grandsons; three granddaughters; sisters, Gwen A. Laing of Bristol, Ind., Nancy and her husband, Ed, Doty of Edwardsburg, Mich., Carol L. and her husband, Conrad, Boglioli of Maryland, and Sue and her husband, Charlie, Mann of Mount Vision; and a special friend, Dorothy Whiteman.

He was predeceased by his father in 1998, mother in 2002, brother, Tom Jorgensen in 2002, and a daughter, Pamela Jorgensen in 1976.

He will be missed dearly by his canine companion, Dee.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the home of Robert Jorgensen Jr. on Saturday, March 8, 2003, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Robert M. Jorgensen Sr. Scholarship Fund, care of B.O.C.E.S. Center, P.O. Box 57, Milford, NY 13807.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Bernice Winchester

UNADILLA — Bernice R. Winchester, 90, of Unadilla, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 12, 1912, in Youngsville, Pa., the daughter of Charles and Emma (George) Darling.

She was married to Lereau S. Winchester in 1931, in Youngsville, Pa. Mr. Winchester predeceased her on Feb. 14, 1969.

Bernice has been a resident of Unadilla since 1945, and was a member of the Sand Hill United Methodist Church, OES Chapter No. 179 of Unadilla, Jolly Nine Club of Wells Bridge, Honorary member of the Wells Bridge Fireman's Auxiliary and the Wells Bridge Senior Citizens.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Alvina and Stuart Rudnitsky of Unadilla; her sons, Lereau Winchester of Sidney, Raymond Winchester of Oneonta, Theador and his wife, Renee, Winchester of Wells Bridge, Charles and his wife, Betty, Winchester of Wells Bridge, and James and his wife, Darlene, Winchester of Otego; her sister and husband, Carrie and John Winchester of Oklahoma; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Clyde and Marion Darling of Warren, Pa., and Roy and Margaret Darling of Warren, Pa., and brother, Theador Darling of Hancock; 28 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Bill Darling; her sister, Laura Dyer; and her grandson, Theador Winchester Jr.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time at the church. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2003, at the Sand Hill United Methodist Church, Unadilla, with the Rev. Norman Tiffany, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be later in Sand Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad or the Wells Bridge First Responders.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee.

Ernestus W. Cooper

GRAND GORGE — Ernestus William Cooper, 71, of Grand Gorge, passed away March 3, 2003, at the Albany Veterans Hospital in Albany.

He was born on April 10, 1931, in Brooklyn, the son of Joshua and Anna (Harr) Cooper.

He married Marjorie Douglas on April 3, 1971, on Long Island.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War.

Ernie was a licensed electrician working on Long Island.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed cooking and had operated the Roxbury Diner in Roxbury. He has been a resident of the Roxbury and the Grand Gorge areas since February 1976.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 216, Margaretville, VFW Post 6292 in Stamford, and Disabled Americans Veterans in Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Cooper, Grand Gorge; two sons, Gary Cooper, Roxbury, and Ernie Cooper, Charlotte, N.C.; three daughters, Sheryl DuMond, Denver, Susan Kirby, Delhi, and Jennifer Ovaitte, West Babylon; 10 grandchildren; and two sisters, Anna Madsen and Judy Cooper.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at the Long Island National Cemetery, Pinelawn on Long Island.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Anna C. Lawrence

SHERBURNE — Anna Celia Lawrence, 88, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2003, at The Harding Nursing Home, Waterville, with her family by her side, where she has resided for the past five years.

She was born on July 25, 1914, in Sherburne, the daughter of Joseph and Minnie (Bice) Giaquinto. Anna Celia spent her entire life in Sherburne and graduated from Sherburne Central School in 1933.

She was employed by the Sherburne Phone Co. for several years before her marriage.

On June 4, 1941, she married Joseph F. Lawrence at St. Malachy's in Sherburne. He predeceased her on Dec. 26, 1969. Anna Celia was also predeceased by her daughter, Elizabeth Anne Fox in 1999; her son-in-law, Frederick Fox, in 1994; and her brother, Robert Giaquinto.

Surviving are her sons, David J. of Sherburne and John P. (Arlene) Lawrence of Hamilton; four grandchildren, Andrew (Jerry) Lawrence, Earlville, Melissa (Stephen) Trass, Earlville, Rebecca (John) Fontaine, Hubbardsville, and Kimberly Fox, Binghamton; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Anna Celia is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Mary and Anne Lawrence, Christine Cahill, Dorothy Lawrence, Sherburne, Margaret Boyer, Calif.; and her brother-in-law, Raymond (Judy) Lawrence, Sherburne.

She was a lifetime member of St. Malachy's Parish and its Altar Rosary Society. She was also active in Girl Scouts and 4-H, first as a member and later on as a leader of both groups. She was also a former member of Grange and Farm Bureau.

Calling hours were held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2003, at the Wm. W. Kehoe Funeral Home, South Main Street, Sherburne; the family was in attendance.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4, 2003, from the Wm. W. Kehoe Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Malachy's Church, with the Rev. John Broderick and the Rev. Edmund Castronova officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Harding Nursing Home, Waterville, or St. Malachy's Church, Sherburne.

The family would like to thank the Harding Family and staff for the compassion and loving care that Anna Celia was given during her stay.

Adah M. Michaels

MOUNT VISION — Adah M. Michaels, age 85, of Mount Vision and Apache Junction, Ariz., died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at her home in Apache Junction.

She was born on Feb. 14, 1918, in Otego, the daughter of Frank and Carrie Gardner Briscoe.

After spending her early years in Otego, she joined the WAAC when it was first founded during World War II. This was later made a part of the United States Army and became the WAC. She was stationed at Fort Myer, Va., and served her time working in the secret room of the Pentagon.

Upon her discharge, she married Howard Michaels of Oneonta on July 18, 1946, in Otego. They lived in Oneonta and later moved to Mount Vision where they raised their family of four children.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Howard, who still resides in Apache Junction. She will be greatly missed by her children, Wayne Michaels and his wife, Barbara, of Mount Vision, Kirk Michaels and his wife, Irene, of Penfield, Cathy Michaels McCarthy and her husband, Paul, of Latham, Jon Michaels of Maryland, and Ann and her husband, Ronald, Utter of Oneonta.

She was a cherished grandma to nine grandchildren, Brenda Michaels Caruso of Walton, Brian Michaels of North Carolina, Christopher Michaels of Mount Vision, Carrie and Sara Michaels of Penfield, Damien Kanser of Tempe, Ariz., Ryan and Lauren McCarthy of Latham, and Matthew Brennan of Oneonta. She also had two great-grandchildren, Brittany and Candice Caruso of Walton.

Having been one of seven children, she is survived by one sister, Mildred Robbins of Maryland; and one brother, Alton Briscoe of Unadilla and Mesa, Ariz. She also has several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers and sisters, Charles Briscoe, Harlon Briscoe, Pearl Emerson and Vernon Briscoe.

Adah had been a member of the Laurens Legion Post No. 1688 and, at the time of her death, was a charter member of the Katchina Chapter of the WAC Veterans Association in Mesa, Ariz., and a member of the Mount Vision United Methodist Church.

She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother who was remarkably strong, loving, creative and full of fun. She spent her life giving to her family. She was admired and respected by those who knew her. She will be missed by all of us but she is now at peace.

The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home two hours prior to services.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2003, with the Rev. Roger Yoder, pastor of the Mount Vision United Methodist Church, officiating, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Burial will be later in Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Laurens American Legion, Main Street, Laurens, NY 13796.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta.

William C. Everts

YOUNGSTOWN — William C. Everts, age 79, of Chestnut Street, Youngstown, and formerly of New Berlin, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at his residence after a brief illness.

Mr. Everts was born on Aug. 18, 1923, in Niagara Falls, the son of the late Arthur and Nell (Swearingen) Everts.

He was a graduate of LaSalle High School in Niagara Falls and was awarded his B.S. from the University of Buffalo in 1949, and continued his education throughout his life.

During World War II, Mr. Everts served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945, and was the recipient of the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts from wounds received in action. He took part in the campaigns of Ardennes, Central Europe and the Rhineland.

On April 30, 1948, he married Patricia deF. (Sweetman) Everts.

Mr. Everts was a science teacher at New Berlin Central Schools for 21 years retiring in 1985, at which time he and his wife moved to Youngstown.

He was a member of the Three F Conservation Society of Youngstown, a communicant of St. Bernard's RC Church in Youngstown, and an avid hunter and fisherman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Patricia Everts of Oneonta, Robert (Sally) Everts of Malta, James Everts of Pittsburgh, Pa., Thomas Everts of Rochester, Andrew (Peggy) Everts of Clarkston, Mich., and Judith Everts of Oneonta; two sisters, Helen Darby of Lewiston, and Nelda (Jack) Miller of Naples, Fla.; a brother, Jack (Rita) Everts of Elma; and his grandchildren, Shawn, Trever, Allen Shae, Rebecca, Matthew and Jack.

He was predeceased by a brother, Clair Everts.

Friends may call Saturday, March 8, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Hardison Funeral Home, 3648 Ransomville Road, Ransomville. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard's RC Church, Second and Hinman Streets, Youngstown, with the Rev. Msgr. Thomas Moran officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to a charity of one's choice would be appreciated.
