Steven W. Sivak

COOPERSTOWN — Steven W. Sivak, 87, formerly of Summit, N.J., and Woodside Hall in Cooperstown, died Thursday morning, March 6, 2003, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Alvin ("Merk") Walker, on Huff Road in Pierstown.

Steven was born on Jan. 6, 1916, in Yonkers, a son of the late George and Anna (Csaklos) Sivak. On June 26, 1937, he married the former Mary H. Kiss in the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Jersey City, N.J.

First employed by American Steel Castings and then American Railway Express, for most of his life Steven was employed as a press operator for American Can Co. in Jersey City, N.J. Following his retirement in 1971, he was employed by Jacobson International Manufacturing Co. He was also a member of the Steel Workers Union. In September 2000, he moved to Cooperstown and for the past two years was very happy living at Woodside Hall.

Steven is survived by his wife, Mary, of Summit, N.J.; his two daughters, Mrs. Carol S. Walker and her husband, Alvin ("Merk") of Cooperstown and Mrs. Alice Treffinger and her husband, Henry, of Wellsville, Pa.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one grandson, Henry Treffinger Jr., who died in 1979.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at a later date in St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus Catholic Church in New Cumberland, Pa.

The Service of Committal and burial will follow in Holy Savior Cemetery in York, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Woodside Hall, 1 Main St., Cooperstown, NY 13326 or Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main Street, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown and the Parthemore Funeral Home in New Cumberland, Pa.

Anna Way

SCHENEVUS — Anna Way, 92, passed away Friday, March 7, 2003, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Granby, Conn.

She was born, Aug. 10, 1910, in New York City, the daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Marchik) Rokos.

She married William J. Way, July 7, 1934, in Forest Hill, N.Y. He predeceased her Aug. 5, 1991.

Mrs. Way moved to Maryland, N.Y., in 1947, then to Marcy, N.Y., in 1957, returning to Schenevus, N.Y., in 1972, where she lived until brought to a Granby, Conn., nursing home for care while recovering from a hip injury.

Mrs. Way was the former secretary and treasurer for the Town of Maryland Historical Association. She attended the Schenevus United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Methodist Women and the Truth Seekers. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, where she acted as pianist, and also a member of the Leatherstocking Railway Historical Society.

Survivors include her son, Kenneth W. Way of North Granby, Conn.; daughter, Alice Marie Way of Alta Loma, Calif.; grandson, Bruce K. Way of Bossier City, La.; granddaughter, Cynthia M. Way of Philadelphia, Pa.; great-grandchildren, Miles, Savannah and Avery Way of Bossier City, La., and Skyler and Mariah Lehmkuhl of Philadelphia, Pa.

A graveside service will be held at the Maryland Cemetery at a later date.

At the request of the family, contributions may be made to the C.H. Graham Hose Co., P.O. Box 116, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Sheldon E. Shaw

DELHI — Sheldon E. Shaw, 92, of Delhi, a respected, civic-minded and lifelong area resident, passed away peacefully Friday morning, March 7, 2003, at Lee Memorial Hospital, Fort Myers, Fla.

The son of Parker W. and Mary (Smith) Shaw, he was born Aug. 7, 1910, in the town of Meredith, where he grew up on the family farm. He was a 1928 graduate of Delaware Academy, and received his formal education and graduated from Albany Business College (1931) and Delhi College (1935).

He married Theresa M. Bedford on Sept. 1, 1939, in Troy. They had one son, Pfc. Richard E. "Dick" Shaw, who was killed in action on Jan. 5, 1968, the only Delhi soldier who gave his life in the Vietnam War.

In early years, Sheldon was employed by the Delaware County Dairy Herd Improvement Association, later working at Scintilla, Sidney, and Behr-Manning Corp., Troy. Primarily engaged in dairy farming, he and his wife operated their own farm for many years, retiring in 1967. Subsequently, he spent the winter months in Fort Myers, Fla., worked summers for Delaware County Highway Dept. and Delhi College Golf Course, and traveled extensively throughout the U.S.

A quiet and unassuming gentleman, Sheldon's memberships included: The First Baptist Church, Delhi; former deacon and trustee of the Meredith Baptist Church; Delaware County Farm Bureau past president and committeeman; Farm & Home Administration supervisor; Co-operative Extension Service; and Veterans Dads' Club. He also served on the building committee during the planning and construction of Delaware Academy.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Theresa M. Shaw; two brothers, David Shaw and Paul (Joyce) Shaw, Delhi; a sister, Elizabeth (George) Blanchard, Sidney; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Benjamin and Oliver Shaw; and a sister, Esther Butler.

Friends are invited to call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13, at the First Baptist Church, Delhi. The Rev. Jeffrey Staples will officiate and burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to Pfc. Richard E. Shaw Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of Delaware Academy, or First Baptist Church, Delhi, will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Louise Armstrong

MILFORD — Mrs. Herbert E. Armstrong of Milford died Feb. 26, 2003, at The Meadows.

The daughter of Louise F.B. Barlow and Mason Barlow, she was born in Philadelphia, Pa. She grew up in Landsdowne, Pa., Chicago, Ill., and Rutherford, N.J.

She married Herbert Eugene Armstrong in Rutherford in May 1937. He predeceased her in February 1986.

She graduated from Passaic Collegiate School and attended Beamer College, Columbia University and the Pratt Institute of Design.

Louise spent her life as a wife and homemaker. She did volunteer work at the Lenox Hill Neighborhood Association and was greatly involved in the Grace Episcopal Church, Rutherford, N.J., Jersey Parish.

In 1962, Louise and Herbert achieved their lifelong dream with the purchase of the Bradley Farm in Milford. They spent the next 10 years restoring the house and developing the surroundings. They were able to move permanently to the farm in 1972, when Herbert retired from his law practice.

During her life in Milford, Louise became librarian of Milford Free Library, a post she held for seven years. She was a member of the Greater Milford Historical Association and with other volunteers worked to restore the historical Sayre House. She resigned as secretary and board member about 1990. Louise was later elected honorary member of the Greater Milford Historical Association. Well-known for her expertise with flowers, her gardens were greatly admired.

Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert E. Armstrong; a sister, Caroline C.B. Arcier; and a brother, Mason Barlow Jr.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews; great-nieces and -nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her niece and companion, Margery N. Armstrong; and many friends.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Dolores M. Eichelberger

ONEONTA — Dolores M. Eichelberger, 63, passed away March 8, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born April 21, 1939, in Oneonta, to Niles and Dorothy Drake Kirk. Dolores graduated from Cherry Valley High School with high honors.

On June 26, 1968, she married Frank D. Eichelberger in Ocala, Fla., where she was employed as a cashier at a recycling center and Frank was working for a golf course. They later moved to Las Vegas, Nev., and then back to the Oneonta area.

Before she was unable to work, she was employed at Moldamatic and Holiday Inn in Oneonta.

Dolores had a great passion for collecting anything to do with Elvis Presley and one time stood in line for more than nine hours to see his performance in Las Vegas.

Dolores is survived by her husband, Frank D. Eichelberger; daughters, Bobbie Degnar of Cooperstown and Patty Brown of Sharon Springs; son, Tony Brown of Burn; sister, Eleanor Monroe of Otego; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and her faithful dog "Bear."

She was predeceased by her parents; daughters, Dolores M. Eichelberger and Sandra Brown; son, Timmy Brown; brother, Niles Kirk Jr.; and sister, Shirley Ann Kirk.

Memorial services will be at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2003. The family will be present an hour before the service.

Burial will be later in the spring in Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in honor of Dolores.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Donald H. Coleman

NORTH NORWICH — Donald H. Coleman, 86, of Wilson Road, passed away Friday, March 7, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born on Aug. 5, 1916, in Smyrna, the son of Harry and Catherine Alcott Coleman. He attended Georgetown schools, and was a graduate of South Otselic High School in 1934.

Donald was united in marriage to the former Ruth Austin on Jan. 14, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas. She predeceased him on Jan. 16, 1992.

Don served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1942 until 1946. He retired in 1979 from Standard Brands in Sherburne, and had previously worked for Hohneker Dairy in Sherburne Four Corners.

Mr. Coleman was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Guild of American Luthiers and the New York State Trappers Association. He was an accomplished musician who played the guitar, banjo, mandolin and fiddle in the Silver Strings Country Band, along with fellow band members Art, Bob and Howard.

Surviving are a brother, Stanley Coleman, of Boise, Idaho; a sister, Minnie Austin, of Sherburne; and several nieces and nephews, including Don Boise of Smyrna; and a special sister-in-law and companion, Dawn Merlino.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2003, from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 South Main St., Sherburne.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., prior to the service.

Spring burial with military honors will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Georgetown.

Ben McElroy

OTEGO — Ben McElroy, 78, formerly of Fair Street in Otego, passed away unexpectedly on March 6, 2003, on Long Island.

He had a passion for life, people, and most of all, golf.

He was a frequent patron of the coffee shops and the golf pro shops. Always with a smile and a joke, he will be missed by all.

Angelita T. Marble

ONEONTA — Angelita T. Marble passed away on March 10, 2003, after an extended illness at Fox Hospital.

She was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Aug. 25, 1924, the daughter of Encarnacion and Margarita (Serra) Tavares.

She married Raymond E. Marble on Aug. 7, 1942.

For many years Angie worked at Homer Folks Hospital and later at S.U.C.O. in the housekeeping department for 20 years, retiring in 1986.

Angie always will be remembered for her love and giving personality toward her family and friends. One of her greatest loves was watching and helping her grandchildren grow up. She also had a special place in her heart for the family pets. One of her favorite pastimes was rummage sales and flea markets.

She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Raymond E. Marble, of Oneonta; her six wonderful children and families, Violet and Nelson Wells Jr. of Oneonta, Beverly and Dave Fuller of Delhi, John and Pam Marble of Oneonta, Rich Marble of Maryland, Susan and Stanley Holmes of Oneonta, and Brian and Lynn Marble of Oneonta; 12 grandchildren, Butch and Teri Wells III, David Fuller Jr., Eric and Kelly Fuller, Kim and Donald Smith, Zacharias Fuller, Koby Marble, Chelsea Marble, Brian Marble Jr., John Marble Jr., Shannon and Kerry Marble, Mark Speranzi and Kiley Cortese and Nicki Emmett; 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret Rule of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Gloria Marble of Baltimore, Md., and Melinda Hillman of Cannonsburg, Pa.; three brothers, Encarnacion Tavares Jr., Santa and Teresea Tavares and Tingo Tavares; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of Angelita T. Marble will be held on Friday, March 14, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul A. Roman officiating. Calling hours will be offered on Thursday, March 13, 2003, at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

William E. Sprague

DELHI — William E. Sprague, 82, of Delhi, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Feb. 8, 1921, in Lawrence, the son of Truman Carl and Goldie Mae (Sutton) Sprague.

A lifetime area resident, he was a veteran of World War II. A longtime stonecutter and miner, William also made and repaired violins and loved to attend auctions in the area.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 91.

Mr. Sprague is survived by his wife of 60 years, Evangeline (Butler) Sprague. They married May 9, 1942, in Andes. He is also survived by four children, James (Patricia) Hasbrouck, South Kortright, Beverly (Walter) Kirk, Hobart, William (Diane) Sprague, Hamden, and Robert (Caroline) Sprague, Delhi; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elno Tompkins, Downsville, and Margaret Lipps, Geneva On The Lake, Ohio; one brother, Gregg Sprague, Andes; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, March 13, 2003, at 2 p.m. at United Ministry of Delhi, with the Rev. Lisa Heckman officiating. Calling hours will take place from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi, on Wednesday, March 12, 2003.

Burial will be in the spring at Hamden Cemetery, Hamden.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Peter J. Macaluso

BLOOMVILLE — Peter J. Macaluso, age 90, a lifelong resident of Bloomville, passed away peacefully at the Albany Memorial Hospital on Monday, March 10, 2003, after a long illness.

Born in New York City Sept. 15, 1912, he moved to Bloomville at the age of 9. He was the son of the late Joseph and Barbara (LaPlaca) Macaluso.

He attended school at Doonan's Corners and Hobart High School.

He married Helen Bettiol on Nov. 30, 1937.

Mr. Macaluso was a lifelong railroad employee with the Ulster and Delaware, New York Central and Penn Central railroads. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees, the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society in the Church of the Precious Blood in South Kortright. He also was a member of the Bloomville Fire Department.

Pete enjoyed reading, politics and horse racing at Saratoga.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of 65 years; his son, Virgil (Patty) Macaluso of Independence, Kan.; his daughter, Barbara Weber of Loudonville; one sister, Grace Kent of East Meredith; a sister-in-law, Rose Macaluso of Oneonta; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Siblings Victor, Leonard, Anthony, Sebastian, Frank and Catherine predeceased him.

Funeral Mass will be held Friday, March 14, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in Stamford, with the Rev. Anthony Ligato, pastor, as the celebrant.

Family and friends may call at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart on Thursday, March 13, 2003, from 3 to 6 p.m. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Bloomville Rescue Squad, in care of Paul Dibble Jr., Bloomville, NY 13739.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

George E. Lang

MILFORD — Mr. George E. Lang, 92, of Milford, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare.

He was born in Forrest Hills, Queens, on June 14, 1910, a son of Jacob and Freida (Boshardt) Lang.

After graduating from high school, George began a dedicated and illustrious career as a New York City Fireman. During World War II he served in the Navy as a fireman on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Bennington, risking his life many times to save pilots who crashed their planes, as well as other shipmates. After the war he returned to the fire department in New York.

George married Florence Graeter in New York on Feb. 2, 1955. They moved to Milford in 1975, where he enjoyed gardening, reading and solving puzzles.

He was a communicant of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and a member of the Walter P. Eggleston Post No. 7128 VFW in Cooperstown.

George is survived by his wife, Florence, of Milford; a stepdaughter and her husband, Patricia and Archie Fleming of Scarsdale; three grandsons, Thomas and Kenneth Fleming and Matthew Fleming and his wife, Kathleen; a special nephew and his wife, Edward and Mary Manolt; as well as many other nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by four sisters, Margaret, Pauline, Mary and Mildred; and two brothers, Jacob and Joseph Lang.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2003, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown at 11 a.m. with Fr. John Rosson, pastor, officiating.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours and burial will be in the spring in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service in Cooperstown and Milford.

John M. Mott

MESA, Ariz. — Mr. John M. Mott, 63, passed away Friday, March 7, 2003, in Mesa, Ariz.

He was born on Aug. 11, 1939, in Oneonta, N.Y., to John Arthur and Evelyn Gast Mott. Mr. Mott was a longtime Endicott, N.Y., resident.

He retired in 1999, after 36 years with the United States Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Services.

A recipient of numerous awards for his work in dam control, natural disasters and flood control, Mr. Mott was a member of the Federal Employee Retirees.

Survivors include his loving wife, Anna Marie Gambino Mott; father; children, James Mott and Theresa Chunko; grandchildren, Alexza and Allek Mott, Raissa and Erik Chunko; brothers, Robert and Richard Mott; and sister, Carol Goodrich.

Memorial services were held Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Mariposa Gardens Chapel in Mesa, Ariz.

An on-line Memorial will be established in his name at www.mem.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.
