William E. Provencher

MOUNT VISION — William E. (Bill) Provencher, age 46, of Mount Vision, died suddenly on Feb. 28, 2003.

He leaves behind his parents, Bill and Betty Provencher; brothers, Bob, Tom, Dickie and Jim; and sister, Nancy Brokaw; and their partners; also nieces and nephews, Julia, Dylan, Madison and Ben; and his loving friend and comrade, Jane Wallace. He will also be missed by many caring friends.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, 2003, at the Mount Vision Fire Department.

Frank W. Andrew

SCHOHARIE — Mr. Frank W. Andrew, 72, of Cook Road, Shutters Corners, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill, after a brief illness.

Mr. Andrew was born June 25, 1930, in Stoneham, Mass., the son of William H. and Meva G. (Knowlton) Andrew. He had resided in Shutters Corners for the past 44 years and had previously lived in the Schoharie County and surrounding area.

Frank attended the Center Valley, Cobleskill and Sharon Springs Schools, graduating in 1948 from Schoharie High School.

For 28 years, he was a milk tester for the New York Dairy Herd Improvement in Cornell, serving Eastern and Southern Schoharie County, retiring in 1993. Previously, he worked for 15 years for the Army Depot in Rotterdam.

Mr. Andrew served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in the Signal Corps stationed in Iceland.

He was a member of the NYS Covered Bridge Society, the Spelunker's Association and the Upper Hudson Valley Antique Auto Association. Frank enjoyed genealogy as well.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara (Lewis) Andrew, whom he married Jan. 24, 1959; one sister, Mrs. Mary R. (James) Hitchcock of South Gilboa; two nephews, Fred Hitchcock of Pennsylvania, and Frank Hitchcock of South Gilboa; one niece, Mary Jo Hitchcock of South Gilboa; three grandnieces, Jasmine, Melinda and Rayleen Hitchcock; one aunt; and several cousins.

There will be no calling hours held.

A celebration of Frank's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2003, at the Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main St., Schoharie.

Burial will be held at a later date in the Old Stone Fort Cemetery, Schoharie.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Frank W. Andrew to Scho-Wright Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 325, Schoharie, NY 12157.

Funeral arrangements are by the Langan Funeral Home of Schoharie and Central Bridge.

Alice M. Empie

RICHMONDVILLE — Alice (Bender) Empie, 64, of Richmondville, passed away peacefully March 11, 2003, after a long courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on May 3, 1938. A homemaker most of her life, she enjoyed knitting, jigsaw puzzles, camping, fishing, barbecues, traveling and, most of all, spending time with her family.

She is survived by her loving children, son Larry Fort Sr. and wife, Cindy, of Richmondville, and their children, Hope and Keith Harvey of Carlisle, and Larry Jr. and Monica Fort of Richmondville. A daughter, Pamela Wilson and husband, Gary, of Milford, and their children, Lee Ann, Christina and Charles. A daughter, Pauline Koren and her husband, Frank Koren, of Westville, their children, April Koren and Steve Bernhardt of Milford, and Frank Koren Jr. and fiance, Kelly Stalter, of Cooperstown. A son, Boyd Fort Jr. of Schoharie, and his son, Dean. A daughter, Janice Halliburton of Ilion, and her children, Chantele and Corey. A son, Robert Empie Jr. and fiance, Joy, of Colorado. A daughter, Melissa Banks and her husband, Stephen, of Westville, and their children, Stephen Jr., Daniel and Jenna. She also has two great-granddaughters, Charlotte Bernhardt of Milford and Erica Reynolds of Middlefield.

She is also survived by six brothers and sisters, Harvey and Pat Bender of Hammond, Ted and Bernice Bender of Tennessee, George and Gail Bender of Richmondville, Wallace and Mildred Bender of Florida, sisters Ruey Gould of Florida and Helen Bender Jr. of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by both parents, Helen and Henry Bender of Cobleskill; a sister, Almira Staats; and two brothers, William (Butch) and Henry (Ray) Bender.

A memorial service will be held Friday, March 14, 2003, at 7 p.m. The services will be held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Main Street, Richmondville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Richmondville Emergency Volunteer Squad or Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Kevin Kratochvil

CAIRO — Kevin Kratochvil, 48, of Vernal Butler Road, died suddenly Monday, March 10, 2003, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, as a result of a logging accident.

He was a native and lifelong Catskill Mountain area resident. He was self-employed in the lumber industry as a logger. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed big game hunting and stream fishing.

He was born Dec. 10, 1954, in Margaretville, son of Patricia Maxim Kratochvil and the late Stanley Kratochvil.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Roxbury are his wife, Virginia, of Cairo; four daughters, Barbie, Jessica and Pattie, all of Cairo, and Jennifer of Prattsville; three brothers, Keith of Jamestown, Michael of Florida, and Stanley Jr. of Kingston; three sisters, Esther of Fleischmanns, Debbie Adamo of Ilion, and Glenda Butts; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia.

A service to celebrate the life of Kevin Kratochvil will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt officiating.

Spring internment will be in the Halcott Cemetery.

Walter L. Whitbeck

FRANKLIN — Walter L. Whitbeck, 64, of Endwell, died at his home Tuesday, March 11, 2003, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Walt was born in Franklin. He married Sharon S. Samuels in 1975 in Endwell. He retired from the Greyhound Bus Lines after 29 years of service. Prior to his illness, he was employed as a contract driver for the U.S. Postal Service.

He was a member of the Round Hill F&AM, Lodge 533 in Endicott. He loved working on projects in his garage. He also enjoyed NASCAR, hunting, fishing and his family.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon, of Endwell; his brothers and sisters-in-law Rudy and Loretta Whitbeck of Franklin, and Larry and Marcia Whitbeck of Oneonta; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Lawrence and Rosemary Samuels of Binghamton; children, stepchildren and their spouses, Julie and Skip Hammond of Binghamton, Kathy Gosney of Binghamton, Scott and Marlene Whitbeck of Binghamton, Hollie Levine and Mark Cantales of Binghamton, Debra and Simhon Harosh of California, Natalie and Marc Shatkin of Buffalo, and Rochelle and Jeff Klieger of Endwell; grandchildren Elana Levine of Johnson City, Jacob and Hanna Klieger of Endwell, Leah and Aaron Shatkin of Buffalo, David and Rina Harosh of California, Jessica and Justin Hammond of Johnson City, Alicia and Shalea Gosney of Vestal, and Kim, Josh and Joseph Whitbeck of Binghamton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his two brothers, Timothy and Arnold.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be at the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in the spring.

The family will receive friends Thursday, March 13, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main St. in Endicott, also on Friday, March 14, 2003, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin.

Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to the Lourdes Hospice West or a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Jerome E. McEligot

NORWICH — Jerome E. McEligot, 72, of Red Fox Road, Norwich, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, March 11, 2003, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.

Born in Nutley, N.J., on May 22, 1930, he was the son of Michael C. and Margaret R. (Cashes) McElligott of Nutley.

He attended school in Sidney, graduating in 1947. Jerry then entered the U.S. Navy, serving his country during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge from active service he joined the New York State Police, where he served from 1952 until he retired in 1975, as a Senior Investigator with the B.C.I. He then was a manager and partner of Fendick Dodge in Oneonta.

Jerry was a life member of the Norwich VFW, Post 2782.

On May 20, 1972, in Norwich, Jerry married Annette S. "Sandy" Dutton, who survives. He is also survived by his daughters and their husbands, Michelle Stratton of Rochester, Pamela and Edward Boyer of Butte, Mont., and Kathleen and Phillip Collier of Norwich; a son, Jeffrey McEligot of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 10 grandchildren, Becky, Abbey, Tony, Lisi, Casey, Meredith, Kyra, Mallory, Chloe and Kara; and two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Emily. Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Pauline Dutton of Lowville; brothers, David McElligott and his wife, Marsha of Watkins Glen, and Robert McEligot of Oakland, Calif.; sisters, Dawn Brennan and her husband, Thomas, of Scranton, Pa., and Diane Schutts and her husband, Richard, of Unadilla; a brother-in-law, Barry Dutton and his wife, Cheryl, of Baton Rouge, La.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and two brothers, E. Lee McElligott and Ray McElligott.

A Mass of Resurrection for Jerry will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2003, at 1 p.m. in St. Paul's Church. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Burial will take place in the spring in St. Paul's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Jerry may be made to the Chenango County SPCA, 6160 County Road 32, Norwich, NY 13815.

Donald W. Leggett

ONEONTA — Donald W. Leggett, 70, of Oneonta, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

As a longtime Oneonta resident, Don graduated from Hartwick College with a degree in psychology. In addition, he owned and operated several successful area businesses including Cartown Credit Co. and Hometown Auto.

He was an avid horseman and enjoyed writing, traveling, designing, politics, painting, and spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed being a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.

Don is survived by his loving wife, April; father, Elmer Leggett, West Columbia, S.C.; two sons, Keith Leggett and Lisa Piazzola, Oneonta, and Chris and Dawn Hodges, Summerton, S.C.; three daughters, Celeste Guyton, Columbia, S.C., Rhys DiPalma, Oneonta, and Sheila and Bruce Latone, Spencerport; three stepchildren, Summer, Skye and Storm Farina; two brothers, Richard and Norma Leggett, Newburgh, and Timothy Leggett and Sissy Workman, West Columbia, S.C.; four sisters, Nora and Larry Wieczynski, Schenectady, Elaine Senn, W. Columbia, S.C., Donna and Robert Kinch, Lutherville, Ga., and Violet and John Carros, Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 16, 2003, at 3 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. John Grenier of the Assembly of God in Oneonta officiating.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 25 River St., Oneonta, NY, 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Dorothy Moss

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Dorothy Moss, 69, of Las Vegas, Nev., died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at the Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas.

She was born on Aug. 1, 1933, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of the late David and Sarah Banner Shostak.

She was the widow of Norman Moss. He predeceased her on June 1, 1986.

She was an administrative assistant for the Clark County, Nevada District Attorney's Office.

She was a member of the Landfield Ave. Synagogue, Monticello.

A family statement reads: "Dorothy spent her whole life loving her family and friends. She gave her soul & heart to all around her. Her caring presence will always be remembered."

She is survived by three sons, Stuart Moss and his wife, Lori, of Oneonta, N.Y., Mitchell Moss and David Moss, both of Las Vegas; three daughters, Diane Moss of Monticello, N.Y., Roberta Conde and her husband, Jack, of Las Vegas, and Pamela Villegas and her husband, Gilberto, of Albany, N.Y.; one brother, Jerome Shostak of Staten Island; one sister, Selma Rosenbaum of Lawrence, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Melissa, Daniel, Joshua, Jennifer and Victoria; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her late husband; she was predeceased by a sister, Miriam Krasner.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 14, 2003, at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 186 Broadway, Monticello, services with Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz.

Burial will be in Landfield Ave. Synagogue Cemetery, Monticello.

Memorial contributions to: Hebrew Day School, Kiamesha Lake, NY 12751 or Landfield Ave. Synagogue, Monticello, NY 12701.

Funeral arrangements are by Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, Monticello.

Joseph Kaufmann

SCHENEVUS — Joseph D. (Joey) Kaufmann, 36, of Schenevus, and formerly of Staten Island, died in an automobile accident in Franklin on Feb. 27, 2003.

He was born on Jan. 7, 1967, in Port Richmond, the son of Joseph E. Kaufmann and the former Nancy A. Staubitz Kaufmann of Schenevus.

Mr. Kaufmann graduated from Port Richmond High School. He moved to Schenevus two years ago.

Extremely capable with his hands, he was self-employed as a computer repairman. He also worked with his father at Straight Shooter Billiards Parlor in Oneonta, as vice president. He had previously worked on Staten Island as a handyman for his father's company, the former Mr. K. Construction Co. He was also an attendant at Holly Hill Pool & Patio in Elm Park.

Mr. Kaufmann enjoyed working on cars, computers and CB radios.

He never failed to pitch in when friends and family needed him. He was always ready to lend a hand whenever it was needed, fixing a computer, running an errand for a friend or helping out with a problem.

His sister had said, "He was always helping somebody and the word 'no' wasn't in his vocabulary. He was the best. He was loved by everybody."

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister and her husband, Nancy Kim and Anthony Cocozziello; his grandmother, Virginia Staubitz; his nephews, Andrew and Matthew Cocozziello, all of Staten Island; and his aunt and uncle, Beverly and Bill Sorersen of Franklin.

Services were held in Port Richmond. Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.

Arrangements were by the Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, Port Richmond.

Elizabeth M. Strand

DELHI — Elizabeth M. Strand, 73, formerly of Delhi, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at West Houston Medical Center, Houston, Texas, following an extended illness.

The daughter of the late Jean and Randi (Ronning) Verrat, she was born Feb. 18, 1930, in New York City, received her nurse's training and degree from Brooklyn Hospital School of Nursing, and married John Eric Strand on March 14, 1953. Mr. Strand died Aug. 16, 1979.

A Registered Nurse, "Liz" commenced working at the Delaware County Infirmary, Delhi, in 1979, from which she retired as Head Nurse in 1991.

Formerly of Woodcliff Lake, Bergen County, N.J., she came to Delaware County in 1976, residing in Bloomville, later moving to Delhi where she lived for 13 years. After her health declined, she moved to Houston, last July, to live near her daughter.

A personable lady, Liz was an avid quilter and sports fan, enjoyed playing tennis and golf, and was a member of the Delhi College Golf Course Women's Association and the United Ministry.

Surviving are two daughters, Victoria Strand Finnegan, of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Karen E. Bernardino, of Houston, Texas; a son, Warren E. Strand, of Portland, Ore.; four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; a sister, Marguerite Day, of Montgomery, N.J.; and three nieces.

Friends are invited to attend funeral services at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at the United Ministry of Delhi. The Rev. Lisa Heckman, Pastor, will officiate, and burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Memorial contributions to MDA/ALS c/o IBC Bank, PO Box 272243, Houston, TX 77277, will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Pearl V. Budin

ONEONTA — Pearl V. Budin, 90, of Oneonta, N.Y., and formerly of Newark, N.J., passed away on Friday, March 14, 2003, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Pearl was born on Jan. 9, 1913, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Max and Mina Vogel.

She married Noah C. Budin in 1952, in Newark, N.J. He predeceased her in 1953.

Pearl received a bachelor's degree in English from Upsala College in 1935. She was a high school teacher for 33 years in New Jersey schools. She was a member of the Temple Beth El and its Sisterhood.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Michael and Mary Budin; her grandchildren Noah, Michael, Jessica and Allen; and her great-grandson, Kyle.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 16, at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin, N.J.

Contributions in Pearl's memory may be made to the Temple Beth El, 83 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Kenneth H. Ruling

UNADILLA — Kenneth H. Ruling, 67, of Unadilla, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Sept. 29, 1935, in Sidney, the son of Leon H. Ruling Sr. and Anna (Greiner) Ruling.

He married the former Mary Oliver on April 20, 1958, in Oneonta. She died Feb. 28, 1987.

Ken was a lifelong area resident and worked for The Daily Star in Oneonta, prior to his retirement in 2000.

He was a former Unadilla Fire Department member and was a member of the Oneonta Amateur Radio Club. He was an avid poker player and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. At one time he worked at Unadilla Silo Co., Unadilla, and Dell Wood Creamery in Frasier.

Ken is survived by his companion, Mary VanValkenburg of Unadilla; his children, Karen Cole and her husband, Bryan, of Oneonta, David Ruling and his companion, Debbie Lloyd, of Unadilla, Wayne Ruling and his wife, Teresa, of Bainbridge, Calvin Ruling of the state of Florida, Charles K. Ruling and his companion, Sandy Grant, of New Berlin, Timothy Ruling and his wife, Shelly, of Oneonta and Kurt Finch of Davenport; his mother, Anna Ruling of Sidney; three brothers, Floyd Ruling of Unadilla, Gerald Ruling of Deposit, and Leon Ruling Jr., and his wife, Faye, of Sidney; two sisters, Gladys Zonbrock and her husband, Allan, of Otego, and Kathleen Knight of New York City; 11 grandchildren, Heather and Travis Cole and David, Kenneth, Michael, Darryl, Justin, Nelson, Tiffani, Steven and Dereck Ruling; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2003, when the family will be present.

A private funeral and committal service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2003, with the Rev. Robert C. Conway of Unadilla officiating, from the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla (directly off Exit 10 of I-88).

Burial will be held later in the spring at East Sidney Union Cemetery, Sidney.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad, Gilbertsville, NY 13776 in memory of Kenneth H. Ruling.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.
