Gerald Shaw

MORRIS — Gerald Shaw, 74, of 8 North Main St., Morris, died unexpectedly on March 24, 2003, at his home.

He was born on March 11, 1929, in Oneonta, the son of the late Harry and Mildred (Butler) Shaw.

He is survived by his sisters and brother-in-law, Betty Dean of Oneonta, and Joan and Forest Wollaber of Cobleskill; his friends, Sue Coss and Bill Kara of Morris; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers Richard Shaw and Carl Shaw.

Gerald loved to make bird houses and feeders and was very handy around the house.

He will be remembered for his time at the Red Barrel in Oneonta, riding his moped and mowing lawns.

Graveside services will be held on April 18, 2003, at 11 a.m. in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made to one's favorite charity.

Arrangements are being provided by the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford.

Carole A. Malerk

SIDNEY — Carole A. Malerk, 60, of Sidney, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2003, at her home.

She was born July 10, 1942, daughter of the late William and Marguerite (Behrend) Weber in Burlington, Wis. Carole graduated from Alverno College School of Nursing in May of 1963. She worked in hospitals, doctor offices and, most recently, home care.

Carole married Gilbert Malerk on Oct. 12, 1992.

She was a member of the Tri-Town Business and Professional Women and Sacred Heart Church in Sidney.

She is survived by her husband, Gilbert Malerk, Sidney; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kass and Bruce Dion, South Burlington, Vt., and Mary and Scott Carabeau, Summerfield, N.C.; stepdaughter Lynne and Michael Dionne, Bainbridge; stepson Donald and Mary Pat Malerk, Missoula, Mont.; seven grandchildren, Alex and Caity Dion, Chris and Brian Dionne, Kyle and Ryan Malerk and Elena Carabeau; brother Bill Weber, Wisconsin; two sisters, Mary Weber, Minnesota, and Marge Roesinger, Colorado; and three nieces and five nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, April, 12, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Deborah Hawkins

NORWICH — Deborah L. Hawkins, 46, of Norwich, died Wednesday afternoon, March 26, 2003, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Debbie was born on Oct. 29, 1956, in Middletown, a daughter of James R. Hawkins and Barbara L. (O'Hagan, Hawkins) Helm.

Raised and educated in Middletown, Debbie traveled throughout the United States, ultimately settling in Norwich. Most recently she had been employed as a machinist at Unison Industries in Norwich.

Debbie is survived by her two sons, Robert and Morgan Roberts of Norwich; her mother, Barbara, and her husband, George Helm, of Henderson, Nev.; two brothers, Larry Hawkins and his wife, Marion, and Jim Hawkins, all of Rochester; two sisters, Brenda Medina and her husband, Carlos, of Henderson, Nev., and Jackie Colon and her husband, Santos, of Woodbridge, Va.; her stepmother, Phyllis Hawkins; and five stepbrothers and stepsisters, Charles, Keith and Mark DePoty, Lauri Cofran and Penny Sotak.

She was predeceased by her father, James R. Hawkins, who died Feb. 6, 2003.

A graveside committal service for Debbie and her father will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2003.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Anna Russell

BINGHAMTON — Anna (Niles) Russell, 78, born in Deposit, went to be with her Savior Thursday, March 27, 2003, at River Mede Nursing Home, after a brief illness.

She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley Russell, in 1992, also three sisters and one brother, Hazel Fuller, Edith Axtel, Elizabeth Fulhaber and Elbert Niles.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews; a close and special niece, Florence Fuller and family, Windsor, Donald Axtel Jr., Binghamton, Edward Fuller, Nineveh, Mary Axtel, Johnson City; and several more; as well as many friends.

She graduated from Harpursville Central School and worked many years at a Day Care Nursery in Binghamton.

She enjoyed camping, doing crafts, eating out and shared many good times with friends at St. Cyrils'.

She attended First Baptist Church of Johnson City, 12 Baldwin St., where a memorial service will be held for her on Sunday afternoon, March 30, 2003, at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Robert Kadlecik officiating.

Many thanks to River Mede and Hospice for all their care and comfort.

Burial will be at a later date at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Clarence Jenkins

OCALA, Fla. — Clarence H. Jenkins, 92, of Ocala, Fla., and formerly of this area, died Monday, March 10, 2003, in Ocala.

He was born March 21, 1910, in Cassville, N.Y., to George H. and Lena (Monroe) Jenkins. Throughout his life he lived in Cassville, West Winfield, N.Y., Oneonta, N.Y., South Edmeston, N.Y., Silver Lake, N.Y., New Berlin, N.Y., Connecticut and Florida.

He was married to Frances A. Jenkins on Sept. 12, 1959.

Clarence served his country in the United States Navy. He was stationed in the Pacific aboard the USS Ticonderoga Aircraft Carrier. He was wounded in action in 1945 and awarded the Purple Heart, as well as other citations. He was a 38-year member of American Legion Post 438 of New Berlin.

He spent his early years on the family farm in West Winfield and also worked for the railroad. He was a retired auto body repairman.

He is survived by his wife, Frances A. Jenkins, of Ocala; one son, Ronald B. Jenkins of Morris, N.Y.; a daughter, Margaret Cernak of Ocala; one brother, George Jenkins of Winston, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Bruce German

ROXBURY — Bruce German, 81, a lifelong resident of Roxbury, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on Thursday, March 27, 2003.

Born Nov. 4, 1921, in Vega, N.Y., he was one of six sons and three daughters born to Ethel Allen and Charles German.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Evelyn Restchack, whom he married March 18, 1945.

He is survived by his second wife, Barbara Caltabiano, who he married June 30, 1976, and children, Lorraine Bussy and husband Jerry of Halcottsville, N.Y., Cynthia Chung and husband Akira of Jacksonville, Fla., Joseph Carr of Roxbury, N.Y., William Caltabiano and wife Alonda of Olivebridge, N.Y., Gunnery Sgt. Anthony Caltabiano of San Diego, Calif., David Cox and wife Christine of West Shokan, N.Y., and Jim Caltabiano and wife Suzette of Hurley, N.Y. He has one surviving sister, Julia Hammond of Denver, N.Y. He was also blessed with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Bruce was a dairy farmer until retiring in 1986, at which time he volunteered as area coordinator for

Guiding Eyes for the Blind. He and his wife were in charge of the Leatherstocking Region
Puppy Raising Program for many years. This included finding raisers and monitoring the progress of the puppies — a job he loved. He was an avid sportsman and loved hunting and fishing. Since his retirement, he loved traveling and spending time with his family, especially enjoying the playfulness of his great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be Tuesday, April 1, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will take place at Tom Hynes, Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury on Wednesday at 11 a.m., with committal following the funeral in Vega Cemetery. Final prayers will be offered by Glenn Bell, a close family friend.

In lieu of flowers, Bruce wished to have memorial donations made in his name to the Guiding Eyes for the Blind (GEB) Breeding Center, 361 Route 164, Patterson, NY 12563, telephone (845) 878-3330.

Arrangements are in the care of Tom Hynes, Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Mary Mahlum

COOPERSTOWN — Mary Augusta McGown Mahlum died Friday, March 28, 2003, at home in Cooperstown surrounded by family and friends following a long illness.

A native of Cooperstown, Mary leaves her husband of 55 years, A.W. "Bill" Mahlum, and their four children and eight grandchildren, as well as dear friends.

Born Feb. 11, 1925, to Frederick Hamilton Sr. and Esther McGown in Cooperstown, Mary was graduated from Cooperstown Central School and Oberlin College. After college, Mary returned to Cooperstown where she worked in the Hall of Fame Library.

Married in Cooperstown in 1947, Mary and Bill had four children, daughters Susan Doe of Irving, Texas, Barbara Bartlett of Lawyersville, N.Y., and Elizabeth McGovern of Great Barrington, Mass., and one son, Stephen Mahlum of Cooperstown.

Throughout her life, Mary volunteered for organizations in each of the many communities in which her family lived. Following Mary and Bill's retirement to Cooperstown, she worked as a volunteer for the Susquehanna SPCA running seasonal barn sales for many years until her illness.

An avid bridge player, birder and gardener, Mary was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown.

In addition to her children, Mary leaves her grandchildren, Margaret Doe O'Neal, Catherine Doe, Robert and Allison Bartlett, Alexander and Zachary Mahlum and Maura and William McGovern; her sons-in-law, Frank Doe, George Bartlett and Mark McGovern; and her daughter-in-law, Ellen Morris; her brothers, Frederick Hamilton McGown Jr., David McGown and Seabury McGown and their wives; and her sister-in-law, Elise Hoffman.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

A memorial service is planned to celebrate Mary's life on Wednesday, April 9, at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown with the Rev. Stephen Quinlan, pastor, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Mary's name can be sent to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc. at 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the American Cancer Society at 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Ralph J. Richards

UNADILLA — Ralph J. Richards, 86, of the town of Unadilla, N.Y., died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at his home.

He was born Sept. 24, 1916, in Hartwick, N.Y., the son of Frank and Minnie Bell (House) Richards.

He was married to Lillian Kumpikas. He was then married to Margaret Hall, who died Sept. 12, 1988.

He served his country in the U.S. Army in the 5th Armored Division (Military Police). He served in the European Theater of Operations during World War II.

He was employed as a machinist at the Scintilla/Bendix Corp. for many years. He was a member of Moose Lodge 277 of Sidney as well as the International-Brotherhood of Aerospace Workers.

Ralph is survived by his children, Carol Fazio of Sarasota, Fla., Larry F. Richards and wife Nancy of Knoxville, Tenn., Gordon J. Richards and wife Rita of Ceperley Avenue, Oneonta, N.Y., Dennis P. Richards and wife Lynn of Middleburgh, N.Y.; three sisters, Viola Harrington of Garrattsville, N.Y., Dora Osborne of Gilbertsville, N.Y., and Minnie Pope and husband Elsor of Mount Upton, N.Y.; and one brother, Herbert Richards of South New Berlin, N.Y. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Mike, Steve, Tim and Chris Fazio, Kevin, Kristin, Casey Richards, Kristen Clevenger, Todd, Adam, Derek, Scott, Mathew Richards, and Lisa Kirchhoff; several great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Morgan Lee Richards, who died Dec. 22, 1947.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, March 31, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, N.Y.

The funeral service will also be held at the funeral home at 6 p.m. on Monday.

Burial and committal services with military honors will be held at a later date in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the Mount Upton Emergency Squad in Ralph's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Leonard Van Cott Sr.

PATRIA — Leonard R. Van Cott Sr., of Patria Road, died Friday, March 28, 2003, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill, after being stricken at his residence.

He was born on Aug. 19, 1940, in Bellmore, N.Y., the son of the late Howard and Gertrude (Greensword) Van Cott.

For 30 years, Mr. Van Cott was a general mechanic for the New York State Parks and Recreation Department. Retiring in 1996 from Minekill State Park, he was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Mr. Van Cott married Dolores Martinelli in June of 1961. She predeceased him on July 10, 1997.

Survivors include a son, Leonard Van Cott Jr., of Patria; his companion, Edith Hadsell, of Patria; two sisters, Muriel Powell of Bellmore, N.Y., and Virginia Fulton of Lantana, Fla.; two brothers, Donald Van Cott, of Babylon, N.Y. and Kenneth Van Cott of Massapequa, N.Y., and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 31, at Mereness-Putam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be the Rev. Jared Van Wagenen IV, pastor emeritus of The Schoharie Reformed Church.

Friends may call at the funeral home before the service from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday.

Burial will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cobleskill Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 451, Cobleskill, NY 12043.

Julius Feciskonin

CHARLOTTEVILLE — Julius Feciskonin, 63, passed away Friday, March 28, 2003, at his residence.

He was born July 1, 1939, in Svidnick, Czechoslovakia, the son of Michael and Anna (Timon) Feciskonin.

Julius was a farmer for many years in Charlotteville, and also was a self-employed landscaper.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma (Harrington) Feciskonin of Charlotteville; a daughter, Tammy Augugliaro of Charlotteville; grandchildren, Desiree, Matthew and Vincent; a brother, Michael Feciskonin of Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.

Calling hours will be held Sunday, March 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, March 31, at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Jane Pykus, pastor of the Worcester United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Charlotteville Cemetery.

At the request of the family, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.

Arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Barbara Cunningham

MASONVILLE — Barbara Cunningham, 93, of Masonville, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2003, at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was born Oct. 30, 1909, daughter of the late Gorgon and Maria (Eberhart) Kraus in Oxburg, Germany.

Barbara married Edward G. Cunningham in New York City. He predeceased her in 1968.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney.

Barbara is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Sidney and JoAnn Cunningham of Masonville; Edward Cunningham of Seaford, Long Island, and John and Dorothy Cunningham of Troy, Mich.; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Barry Holbert of Beallsville, Ohio; 30 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is also predeceased by a daughter, Sarah Lynn.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, March 31, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church Liberty Street, in Sidney. The Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will be in Masonville Cemetery.
