Alfred Olmstead

UNADILLA — Alfred Olmstead, 75, passed away peacefully on the evening of March 27, 2003.

He was born in Delaware County but spent a large portion of life at Broome Developmental Center.

In 1980, Al moved to the West Street CR where he lived until moving to The Arc Otsego's Jefferson Avenue home in 1987. In 1994, Alfred had the opportunity to move with two of his closest friends to a home near Unadilla, where he has lived since that time.

His parents, Walter Olmstead and Margaret Terpac Olmstead Carroll; as well as two brothers, Paul and John, preceded Alfred in death.

A sister-in-law Jean; and a brother Charles, survive him. Alfred is also survived by his housemates, Olin and Ray; as well as by the many staff members who have worked with him and the friends he has made over the years.

He was currently attending the Browne Street Day Habilitation program and received support in his home from The Arc Otsego's residential program. Since 1999, The Arc Otsego Guardianship/Advocacy Committee has acted as Alfred's guardian. Dr. Joanne Curran was Alfred's guardianship advocate.

Alfred loved music, painting, cooking, his friends and good conversation.

He was a collector of mugs and all things that had to do with trains. Alfred knew almost every train song ever written and was happy to sing them for you. He made numerous woodworking projects including birdhouses, birdfeeders and wall plaques. One of his favorite activities was playing Santa every year. All who knew him will miss him greatly.

A Memorial Mass celebrating Alfred's life will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney on Thursday, April 3, 2003, at 10 a.m. with Father Gordon Polenz officiating. A lunch will follow the service.

All donations in memory of Alfred can be made to The Arc Otsego, P.O. Box 490, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Diana E. Hunter

WEST CONESVILLE — Diana Elizabeth Hunter, 60, of West Conesville, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

Mrs. Hunter was born in Ogdensburg, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Phyllis Williams McDonald.

She was an area resident for 31 years, relocating from Norwood.

She was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed serving as a Girl Scout leader and volunteer at the Gilboa-Conesville Central School.

Diana will be remembered by her husband of 39 years, Stanley Hunter, of Gilboa; her daughters, Julie A. Mckee and her husband, Matthew, of Boston, Mass., Cynthia Hunter of Bend, Okla., and Amy Boudreau and her husband, Alec, of Grafton; her grandsons, Hunter M. and Shalor P. McKee of Boston, Mass.; a sister, M. Kathleen Hunt of Bromsgrove, England; her loving mother, Phyllis E. McDonald of Cobleskill; many nieces and nephews; and a grandniece.

Friends may call Wednesday, April 2, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford. The Rev. Edward Golding will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, in St. Anna's Roman Catholic Church, Summit.

Donations may be made in Mrs. Hunter's memory to the Conesville Rescue Squad and/or St. Anna's RCC, Summit.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Gordon K. Spoor

MOUNT VISION — Gordon Kenneth Spoor of Mount Vision died at his home on March 31, 2003.

He was born in the town of Hartwick on Jan. 12, 1915, the son of Charles and Eva Lyon Spoor.

Gordon worked for Crowley's, then Meridale Jersey Farm, in Oneonta, as a driver/salesman, and as a janitor for SUCO before retiring in 1979.

In 1938, Gordon married Elna Sessions. She predeceased him in 1962. In 1963, he married Mildred Louise Carle. She also predeceased him in 1991.

Gordon was a very loving man. He was adventurous and loved traveling, with Vermont, Massachusetts, and Niagara Falls among his favorite places. He loved the outdoors and riding his moped.

His grandchildren can remember the cookouts and special trips for ice cream.

Gordon also worked crossword puzzles, collected model antique cars and repaired lawn mowers.

Survivors include his companion of 11 years, Alice Gardner; son Frank Spoor of Laurens; stepdaughters, Mrs. Ruth Kvist Hansen of Denmark, and Katheryn Lindsey of Highland Park, N.J.; daughter-in-law Donna Spoor of Mount Vision; 11 grandchildren, Ken Spoor of Richmondville, Duane Spoor of Morris, Tandi Spoor of Mount Vision, Charles Lindsley Jr. of Manhattan, Manja and Tessa Kvist Hansen of Denmark, Robin Clemens of Lake Port, and Linda Balifty of Florida, Susan Brannon of Central Square, John Dodge and Betty Rich of North Carolina; seven great-grandchildren; and all his friends from Senior Meals at Elm Park Methodist Church.

He was predeceased by his parents; two wives; and a son, Ronald Spoor.

Memorial donations may be made to the Senior Center at Elm Park Methodist Church in Gordon's honor.

Following his wishes, there will be no calling hours or service.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Clarence Robst

ONEONTA — Clarence "Ace" Robst, 78, of Oneonta died March 29, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a lengthy illness.

He was born Jan. 10, 1925, in Elizabeth, N.J., the son of Albert and Ada Robst.

He was married to Alberta Mary Guyer. She predeceased him Sept. 8, 1967. He was also predeceased by his companion, Marie Johnson, in 1992.

After World War II, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1945, as Technician 5th grade Cannon Company 10th Infantry. He served in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the EAME Theater Ribbon with 5 Bronze Stars and the WDGO 33/45 medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart and the CIB Combat Infantry Medal.

He was a member of the Oneonta Moose Lodge and the Oneonta VFW.

He was a retired owner of Ace Carpet Service in Oneonta, having installed carpeting in several local homes and businesses.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Clarence A. Robst Jr. and Julie Robst of Pulaski, and Gordon A. Robst and Maria Robst of Gilbertsville; grandchildren, Clarence A. Robst III and Ann of Rotterdam, Brigham Robst and Alberta Robst, Pulaski, Jesse Robst of Gilbertsville; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Jacob Robst of Rotterdam, and Judy Smith, daughter of Marie Johnson of Little Egg Harbor, N.J.; and several cousins.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held later at the convenience of the family.

Those who wish can make contributions to the Oneonta VFW, Chestnut Street, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Bernice Oberriter

ONEONTA — Bernice Ellen Oberriter, formerly of Ridge Road, Utica, died on Sunday, March 30, 2003, at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Oneonta, where she had been a resident since October of 2001.

She was born Dec. 17, 1909, in Whitestown, the daughter of Origan Denielt and Blanche Tuttle Denielt.

She attended local schools and graduated from Chadwicks Union Free High School, Chadwicks, in 1927.

She and her husband were lifelong residents of Utica. Bernice was a lifelong member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Utica. She married John Martin Oberriter in St. John's Church, Utica, in 1931. He predeceased her in 1981.

She is survived by her son, John Roger and his wife, Natalie, of Roseville, Calif., son, Don A. and his wife, Sharon, of Fly Creek; and daughter, Donna Cheryl and her husband, Daniel, Guida of Panguitch, Utah. She leaves six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

An avid outdoorsperson, she belonged to the Tramp & Trail Club, the Snow Ridge Ski Club, was an expert skier and loved to travel to new ski adventures. In summer she played golf, and was proud of having scored a hole-in-one at the Valley View Golf Course.

She and her husband, Marty, were active members of the Players of Utica, appearing in numerous productions. Bernice also performed as a church soloist, accompanied by her husband on the organ.

Bernice was a professional photographer and portrait finisher, apprenticing at the Cunningham Studios from 1927-1930. She managed the Whelan Studio in JB Wells Department Store from 1930-1937. From 1938 to 1950, she was associated with the Frey Studio.

Bernice was the founder and principal owner of Obies Drive Inn and Obey's Restaurant located on Oneida Street, Washington Mills, from 1951-1975. She was known then and for many years after her retirement as "Mrs. Obey."

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center for their tender care and compassion.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Friedel, Williams, Coriale & Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Road, New Hartford, with the Rev. Mark S. Caruana officiating. Calling hours will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., prior to the funeral.

Interment will be in the Town of Lee Cemetery, Lee.

In lieu of flowers, kindly consider donations to the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 13 Clark Place, Utica, N.Y. 13501.

Richard D. Stanley

SIDNEY — Richard D. Stanley, 64, of Sidney, died Sunday, March 30, 2003.

He was born Nov. 19, 1938, son of the late Charles and Nina (French) Stanley in Franklin.

Dick served his country in the United States Army from 1964-1966.

He was employed as a molder for Amphenol Corp. in Sidney when he retired in 1996.

Dick was a member of the American Legion in Sidney.

He is survived by his son, Brant Stanley, Norwich; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Brian Peck, South New Berlin, daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Scott Yoakem, Homosassa, Fla.; two brothers and sister-in-law, Charles and Jane Stanley, Guilford, and Bob Stanley, Guilford; two sisters, Shirley Bates, Watertown, and Arlene Windsor, Norwich; five grandchildren, Lauren, Tia, JR, Jessica and Brittany; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call Wednesday. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Graveside services with military honors will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Highland Cemetery in Sidney Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the New York State Veterans Home, 4211 State Highway 220, Oxford, N.Y. 13830-4305.

Joseph A. Barile

MARGARETVILLE — Joseph Anthony Barile, 80, of Margaretville, died March 29, 2003, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

He was born on March 6, 1923, in Norwich, Conn., the son of Ralph and Maria (Pelligrino) Barile.

He married Margaret Collins in 1951 in the Bronx.

Joseph attended Brooklyn Technical High School and the Pratt Institute, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering.

He was the owner and head engineer for Colmar Instruments Corporation in Valley Stream, an aerospace engineering design firm. The firm worked on the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) for the first moon landing with the Grumman Aerospace Firm.

He continued to be active in the Aerospace Industry until recently providing maintenance and design of the F14 Tom Cat and other American Aircraft.

He was owner and breeder of thoroughbred horses, racing at tracks including Belmont, Saratoga and Aqueduct in New York, and other tracks on the East Coast.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Collins Barile, Arkville; daughter, Mary Barile, Columbia, Mo.; and also by two brothers and one sister.

He was predeceased by one son, Ralph Joseph Barile. He died Jan. 30, 1993.

Services will take place at a later date. Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Happy Tails Animal Sanctuary, care of Mary Barile, 1309 Ashland Road, Apt. J, Columbia, MO 65201.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Patricia Larsen

PINE HILL — Patricia Anne DeBella Larsen of Pine Hill left this life on Friday, March 28, 2003, to live in eternal peace. She was 55.

Pat was born in Brooklyn on March 18, 1948. She was the daughter of the late John and Marjorie (Howard) DeBella of Brooklyn and Pine Hill.

Patricia graduated from Fonte Bon High School and later continued her studies at NYU where she graduated with a degree in literature.

Patricia married Bruce G. Larsen, also of Brooklyn, on Nov. 18, 1972. She was united in marriage by the late Judge Darling of Fleischmanns. In November of 1974, Patricia gave birth to her only child, a daughter, Mindy Anne Larsen.

Patricia moved into her beloved home in Pine Hill in 1988. Among her many interests and talents were reading, writing short stories, playing the piano and enjoying rides along the mountainside.

Her interest also included watercolor painting classes at the Pine Hill firehouse under the direction of Ralph Persons, and she was also involved in her own craft business, "Pat and Brat."

She was a friend to all that knew her.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Margaretville, and of the Writers in the Mountains.

Pat loved nothing more than spending time with her beloved 4-year-old granddaughter, MacKenzie Anne Larsen.

She is survived by her loving husband of 30 years, Bruce Larsen, Pine Hill; loving daughter, Mindy Anne Larsen, Margaretville; her beautiful granddaughter, MacKenzie Anne Larsen, Margaretville; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins in Colorado, New Mexico and California; and friends, neighbors and special friends, Vikki and Donald Peterson, Denver, and Frank and Maria Keeney, Forest Hill, Queens.

She was predeceased by her parents, John and Marjorie DeBella.

Calling hours are from 2 p.m. until service time, and following the service until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. William A. Gorman officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Green Park Cemetery, Morganville, N.J.

Contributions in her name can be made to the American Kidney Association.

Janet W. Wenck

ONEONTA — Janet Wooden Wenck of Oneonta died March 31, 2003, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born May 29, 1918, in Gloversville, the daughter of George H. and Blanche Vosburgh Hillary.

Janet was married to Harry O. Wooden on April 23, 1940, in Oneonta. He predeceased her on Jan. 29, 1964.

During her working career, she was employed at the Sew & Save Fabric Store, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Bresee's Department Store in the children's department and Sisson's Clothing Store doing alterations.

Janet loved children and worked as a lunchroom and playground aide at Valleyview then Center Street School until 1998. An independent resourceful woman, she was always conscious of others and wanted to help wherever she could. She upholstered furniture and did sewing and alterations for others as long as she was able.

Her family can remember many clothes being made for their children and grandchildren.

When she was younger, she enjoyed roller skating and taught her children that skill. She also enjoyed camping trips and collecting Teddy Bears.

Janet is survived by a son, Richard Wooden and wife, Dorothy, of Oneonta; daughter, Sandra Hewitt and husband, Clyde, of Mount Vision; five grandchildren, Richard Wooden of Reno, Nev., Robert Wooden of Rochester, Steven Hewitt of Endwell, Deborah Hewitt Croft of Hartwick, and Michael Hewitt of Hartwick; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband and a grandson, Timothy Hewitt.

She will also be missed by her friends and fellow members of St. James Episcopal Church.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 5, 2003, at 2:30 p.m. at the St. James Episcopal Church, with the family visiting with friends after the service.

Interment will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the Oneonta Nursing Home or the American Cancer Society in Janet's honor.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.
