C. Virginia Banks

NORTH SYRACUSE — C. Virginia Banks, 82, of North Syracuse, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Community General Hospital.

She was a native of Gilbertsville and lived the past 39 years in North Syracuse.

She earned her bachelor of arts degree in education from the State University College at Oneonta. She retired as an elementary teacher for the Sidney Schools.

She was a member of the Believers' Chapel.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, in 1987.

She is survived by two brothers, Richard W. of Norwich, and James R. Morris of Mount Upton; three nephews, James R. and John J. of Gilbertsville, and Dr. Thomas C. Morris of Sherburne; and two nieces, Carol Ashton of Florida, and Brenda Lagoe of Sherburne.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the Believers' Chapel, Thompson Road, North Syracuse. The family will receive friends following the service.

Burial will be in the spring at Morris Chapel Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Fergerson Funeral Home, 215 So. Main St., North Syracuse.

Phyllis M. Beers

LANTANA, Fla. — Phyllis Magro Beers of 6398 Cypress Lane, Lantana, Fla., passed away Dec. 16, 2002.

Phyllis was born in Grand Gorge, N.Y., the daughter of Peter and Pearl Magro.

Phyllis was employed as the secretary at the Grand Gorge Central School for several years before moving to Florida, where she was a medical secretary.

Phyllis is survived by her sisters, Gloria A. La Tourette of Alcester, S.D., and Gertrude L. Davis, Cortland, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Magro, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and her sister, Esther Polli, Grand Gorge.

Raymond G. Sherburne

EATON — Raymond G. Sherburne, 83, of Sherburne Road, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2003, at University Hospital, Syracuse.

He was born April 21, 1919, in the town of Butternuts, a son of the late W. Gilbert and Jennie Bidwell Sherburne, and was a graduate of South New Berlin High School.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy who served his country in World War II.

On Nov. 18, 1939, Ray was united in marriage to the former Frances B. Silvernail in Otego.

He was employed by the Morrisville-Eaton Central School as the head custodian in the high school, and as a bus driver until his retirement. He had previously been the plant manager and dairy inspector for Sealtest Foods in Eaton.

Mr. Sherburne was very active in his church and his community. He was a member of the Eaton Community Bible Church; a member and past chief of the Eaton Volunteer Fire Department, and a past district commissioner.

He was a past president of the Central New York Firemen's Association, which gives a yearly award in his name; a past president of the Madison County Firemen's Association, and a past trustee of the Firemen's Home from 1980-1990.

He was also a member of the F&AM Butternuts Lodge No. 0515 of Gilbertsville.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Sherburne; a son, Robert R. Sherburne of Delray Beach, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Art Zimmer of Syracuse; his grandchildren, Jenny and Jack Lewis of Sagauche, Colo., and John Sherburne of Wilmington, N.C.; a great-granddaughter, Amy Grace Lewis; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, from the Eaton Community Bible Church, Brooklyn Street, Eaton. There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be in the Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton, at a later date.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Eaton Community Bible Church, Eaton, N.Y. 13334; the Eaton Fire Department, Eaton, N.Y. 13334; the Firemen's Home, 125 Harry Howard Ave., Hudson, N.Y. 12534; or to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 31 Cedar St., Morrisville.

Helen A. Miller

EDMESTON — Helen A. Miller, 79, passed away Monday, March 31, 2003, at her home in Edmeston.

She was born Aug. 5, 1923, in Frankfurt, the daughter of Elwood and Mabel (Pedersen) Anderson.

She married Warren R. Miller on May 10, 1947, at the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston.

Helen was baptized at the Second Baptist Church at 12 years old, and kept her faith in the Lord throughout her life. She was a member of the church for over 67 years, and was active in the Wednesday Bible Study group.

During World War II, Helen worked as an inspector at Scintilla in Sidney.

She held other various jobs which included working with her mother as a caretaker for Rome clients, being a teacher's aide at Edmeston Central School, and her final employment as a kitchen assistant at Pathfinder Village.

Helen's greatest loves were God, her husband, Warren, her precious children and her hobbies. She enjoyed her monthly get-togethers with the Edmeston Hobby Club, sewing and quilting.

She was an avid reader of Christian Novels and was also a collector of dolls and handbells.

She is survived by her husband, Warren; her children and their spouses, Lynn W. Miller and Lilie Welych, Elwood R. Miller, Gertude A. and Philip LaDouceur, and June Miller-Williams and Dale Williams; three grandchildren, Alexandra, May and Alison; and her sister, Hazel Jane Babral.

Helen was predeceased by her brother, Kenneth Anderson; and her sister, Louise Lennon.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 4, 2003, at the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston, with Rev. Jay Noll officiating.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston.

Interment will be in the spring at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Helen's memory to the Second Baptist Church, 7 North St., Edmeston, N.Y. 13335.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston.

Amy L. Davis

OXFORD — Amy L. Davis, 83, of Sidney, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

She was born Dec. 21, 1919, daughter of the late Harry and Ruby (Varney) Rice in Southport.

Amy was married to Jay E. Davis. He predeceased her in 1985.

She owned and operated Davis Adult Home in Sidney for many years.

Amy is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, William R. and Linda Davis, Afton, and Harry and Sheila Davis, Guilford; three daughters and sons-in-law, Penny and Andre Castell, Richmond, Va., Mary Ann and James Wright, Unadilla, and Kathryn and Vincent Cuozzo, East Guilford; three brothers, Max Rice, Ralph Rice and Fred and Geraldine Rice; 24 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her son, Pete Davis; daughter, Ruby Cuozzo; brothers, Glenn, Lawrence and Harold; and sister, Katherine Lusk.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2003, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. Tony Hipes, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Bainbridge and Afton, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the NYS Veterans Home, 4211 State Highway 220, Oxford, N.Y. 13830-4305 and/or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc. Sidney.

John B. Sloan

GILBERTSVILLE — John B. Sloan, 83, of Gilbertsville, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at the Kingston Hospital after a prolonged illness.

He was born Sept. 20, 1919, in the town of Butternuts, the son of Brice and Mamie (Haines) Sloan.

He lived most of his life in Gilbertsville, where he graduated from Gilbertsville Central School in 1937.

He married Beulah Birdsall in June of 1940. He worked at Scintilla of Sidney from 1940 until 1943, when he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the European Theater of operations during World War II in the 102nd Infantry division as a machine gunner having fought in the "Battle of the Bulge," and was discharged in 1946.

Throughout the years he worked at various jobs including working at the Gilbertsville School as a custodian, where he also ran the projector for the Saturday night movies.

He moved to Florida in the mid 1950s and worked as a sheet metal mechanic for Radiation Company until he returned to Gilbertsville in 1962. He then worked for Scintilla, Bennett Ireland and retired from Simmonds Precision as a toolmaker in 1980.

He was fire chief of the Gilbertsville Fire Department during the early 1950s. He was also very active in the American Legion for over 50 years and served as Otsego County Commander in 1969.

He enjoyed throwing horseshoes and gardening.

John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Beulah; his sister, Ada Sloan of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Bernt Hansen of Zephyrhills, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Mary Sloan of Gilbertsville, a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Myra Sloan of Gilbertsville; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A brother, Bill Sloan; a son, Jim Sloan; and a grandson, Eric Nesbitt predeceased him.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville and burial will follow in the Brookside Cemetery with military honors.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Beverlee Sanders

LENOX, Mass. — Beverlee Clark Sanders, 87, a longtime resident of Lenox, Mass., and a retired real estate broker, died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass., where she was taken early in the day. She lived at home until her death.

Born in Hartford, Conn., on March 20, 1916, daughter of Burton Clark and Lillian Skelding Clark, she grew up in the Boston area. Orphaned at 17, she graduated from the Bishop Lee School of Dramatic Art on Beacon Hill and worked as an actress in her early 20s, appearing at the Malden Bridge, Brattle Hall and other regional theaters.

She kept her dramatic flair throughout her life. Divorced in the 1950s, she was spirited enough to raise her family alone and took her four children from Florida to the Catskills to Hollywood, Calif., finally settling in the Berkshires, so they could grow up in a culturally rich environment.

As a broker, first in Tyringham, Mass., then in Lenox, she sold real estate for more than 30 years. She also practiced real estate in California and New York.

Being a mother was what made Beverlee Clark Sanders most proud. She had an insatiable curiosity, and she always said she had a happy heart. In the end, it could dance no more. The following is from a poem entitled "The Mother Tree," written by her daughter, Debby:

Ms. Sanders devoted her life to her children, daughters Deborah C. Winslow of Lenox, Vicki Sanders of Boston, and Judy C. Sanders of Albany, N.Y.; and son Clark of East Meredith, N.Y. She is also survived by four grandchildren; and a sister, Hope Hassett of Surfside Beach, S.C.; four grandchildren, Tiffany Winslow of Lenox, and Jessamy, Sita and Shawnee Sanders of East Meredith; also friend and caregiver, Liliana Bibic.

She was predeceased by one brother, Kendall Clark.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Church on the Hill in Lenox, Saturday, April 5, 2003, at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Robert L. Livingston. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Lenox.

Arrangements are being handled by the Roche Funeral Home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA. 01240.

Mark R. Stilwell

LAKE WORTH, Fla. — Mark Robert Stilwell, 41, formerly of Worcester, N.Y., passed away, April 1, 2003, unexpectedly at his home in Florida.

He was born Nov. 26, 1961, in Oneonta, N.Y., the son of Gordon L. and Florence Jean (Platts) Stilwell. Mark was a 1980 graduate of Worcester Central School.

He was currently working at the Palm Beach Kennel Club as a program distributor.

He was an avid sports fan. Most of all, Mark loved his greyhounds racing, softball games at the legion field, and his Miami Dolphins and Florida Marlins.

Mark is survived by his mother, Jean Stilwell of Lake Worth; two sisters, Jackie and husband, Harold, Southworth of Worcester, and Donna and husband, Steve, Pierce of Lake Worth; a brother, Terry and wife, Kim, Stilwell of Greenacres, Fla.; nephews, Mike Southworth of Worcester, Harold and wife, Annette, Southworth of Cobleskill, N.Y., and Bobby Livingston of Lake Worth; nieces, Tonya Southworth, Penny Southworth, Pam and husband, Jim, McCoy, all of Worcester, and Sonya Stilwell of Alabama; great-nieces and -nephews, Brandy Rowe, Nicole and Leo Moore, Beth and Jill Hren, Bobby Martin, all of Worcester, Ashley Southworth of Cobleskill, and Nathaniel Southworth of Plattsburgh; as well as many friends.

He was predeceased by his father.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2003, at the E.J. Skinner Co., Worcester.

A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. the same evening at the All County Funeral Home in Lake Worth, Fla.

A graveside service will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester, Saturday, May 3, 2003. The time will be announced at a later date.

At the request of the family, contributions may be made to the Worcester Baseball Organization, P.O. Box 505, Worcester, N.Y. 12197.

Arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Edwin McFarland

DELHI — Edwin McFarland, 96, of Delhi, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

He was born June 20, 1906, in Delhi, the son of Robert and Sarah (Frisbee) McFarland.

He married Ruth Zimmerman on Oct. 17, 1942. She predeceased him on June 20, 1973.

A small firearms instructor and machinist in the United States Navy, he served from 1942 until 1945. A self-employed gunsmith, his expertise was renowned throughout the state and locally appreciated at the Gerry Estate.

Mr. McFarland will be remembered as a fine craftsman who made heirloom furniture as a hobby. He loved to ride his Harley Davidson in the countryside where he especially appreciated the out of doors, and the hunting and fishing that abounds.

A true gentleman, he enjoyed picnics with Ruth.

Two nieces, Jane Roche, Conn., and Susan Bunzl of Munich, Germany survive.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral services will take place 2 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2003, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, with the Rev. Arvid Whitmore officiating. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Robert L. Ruling

UNADILLA — Robert L. Ruling, 70, of Unadilla, passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, with his family by his side.

He was born Aug. 16, 1932, the son of Louis and Mildred (DuMond) Ruling.

Bob served his country and was a veteran of the Korean War from 1952-1954, and was honorably discharged.

He married Joyce Constable on April 25, 1953. They would have been celebrating 50 years of marriage this year.

He was employed by the Town of Unadilla Highway Department, retiring in 1995, after 37 years of service.

He was an honorary member of the Wells Bridge Fire Department; the American Legion and the Unadilla Rod and Gun Club. Bob enjoyed bowling, hunting, long rides in the country, watching his grandchildren play sports and spending time with his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; his daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Jim Whitbeck of Unadilla; his son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Kitty Ruling of Unadilla; four grandchildren, Brad and Rhonda Whitbeck and Scott and Megan Ruling; and two sisters, Christina Northrup of Franklin and Marjorie Constable of Unadilla. Also surviving are an aunt and uncle, Frank and Marian Miller of Denton, N.C.; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is also survived by a special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Walt and Fran Kane of Unadilla.

He was predeceased by two brothers, George Ruling of Otego and Alfred Ruling of Melbourne, Fla.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held later in the spring at the Sand Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, and will be announced at that time.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish can make contributions to the Wells Bridge Fire Department, First Responders or Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.
