Fred W. Rochmis

DELHI — Fred W. Rochmis, 92, passed away Wednesday night, April 2, 2003, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where he had been a resident for the past nine years.

The son of William and Rose (Dubsky) Rochmis, he was born May 6, 1910, in New York City, where he grew up and graduated from City College with a degree in sociology.

A WW II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army, after which he married Bronka Sorgenstein on June 21, 1947. She predeceased him on March 7, 2002.

A government employee for 35 years, he retired from the Federal Aviation Agency as a personnel manager.

Fred was a kind, thoughtful man who loved reading and poetry.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Neil and Susan Rochmis of Delhi; and grandchildren Louisa and Daniel.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Eleanor A. Hannett

ONEONTA — Eleanor A. Hannett went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 2, 2003.

She was born Nov. 28, 1919, to Frank and Wilhelmina (Munz) Funk in Queens, N.Y.

She married George A. Novellano on June 15, 1941. He died May 20, 1974. She was remarried to James Hannett on Aug. 20, 1983. He died February 2001.

Eleanor loved to sing, dance, travel and tell stories. She resided in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., for 20 years and recently moved to Oneonta to be near her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving family, Carol and Dan Guinan of Long Island, Barbara and Dale Perales of Oneonta, Kathy and George Gander of Virginia, George and Nancy Novellano of Davenport, her 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and her sister, Thelma Duryea of Vero Beach, Fla., as well as several nieces and nephews.

Eleanor was predeceased by three sisters, Kay Salerno, Janet Olencki and Lillian Bognar.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 5, at 10 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Burial will be at a later date at Pinelawn National Cemetery, Farmingdale, Long Island, N.Y.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to The Community Gospel Christian Educational Scholarship Fund, 12 Grove St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Eleanor A. Hannett.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Rita L. Hazlett

NORWICH — Rita L. Hazlett, 87, most recently of Norwich and formerly of Oneonta passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday, April 4, 2003, at the Valley View Manor Care Facility in Norwich.

She was born July 16, 1915, the daughter of Charles and Clara (Beauregarde) Bernier.

She was married to Gerald T. Hazlett. He predeceased her on Nov. 26, 1997.

Rita was one of 11 children. She was very proud of her French-Canadian heritage, including her family ties on her mother's side to General Beauregarde. After her marriage and starting her family, Rita had worked for several area businesses, including the Oneonta Dress Factory, Scintilla, Homer Folks, Diana's, and as a cook for the Oneonta Elks Club for many years. During her retirement years, Rita enjoyed driving around with her friends, going to bingo, knitting sweaters, reading, and most of all loved to brag about her grandchildren.

She is survived by three sons and their spouses, Allen B. Hazlett and his wife, Sarah, of Virginia Beach, Va., Lawrence W. Hazlett and his wife, Sandra, of Oneonta, and Douglas J. Hazlett and his wife, Denise, of West Laurens; seven grandchildren, Elliott, Morgan and Liza Hazlett of West Laurens, Lauren Hazlett of Pittsburgh, Pa., Matt Hazlett, who is presently serving his country in the United States Navy in the Persian Gulf aboard the USS Constellation, Erin Hazlett of Virginia Beach, Va., and Benjamin Hazlett also of Virginia Beach, Va.; also one great-grandson, Ernest J. Yokley.

At Rita's request, there will be no calling hours or funeral services.

Spring burial will take place in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern New York, Leatherstocking Region Office, State University College at Oneonta, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in Rita's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

William R. Joedicke

PACOLET, S.C. — William R. "Bill" Joedicke, "Beloved Papa," 57, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2003, at his home in Pacolet, S.C. His family was by his side when he lost a courageous battle to esophageal cancer.

Bill was born on Nov. 16, 1945, in Bloomville, N.Y., the son of Fred and Marian Joedicke. He attended South Kortright Central School. He was an area resident of Bloomville and Hobart, N.Y, for many years.

Bill was married to Ella L. Neer in Walton. After living in New York until 1987, and Florida until 1999, Bill and Ella moved to South Carolina.

Bill was well-known to those around him for his smile and caring ways. He was very passionate about his career in driving tractor trailer, having last worked at Overnite Transportation. He was very proud to be part owner of BWS Specialized Transport with his wife and son, William.

His wife, Ella, and immediate family members Delena, William, Samantha, Sierra, and 'lil William, and nephew, Charles R. Johnson, all of Pacolet, S.C., survive Bill. He is also survived by his brother Fred and sister, Rick, both of Hobart, sister, Susan of Prattsville, N.Y., and nieces, nephews and aunts.

His brother James and parents, Fred and Marian Joedicke, predeceased him.

A memorial service will take place later at the convenience of the family. He will be laid to rest at the Riverside Cemetery in Bloomville.

For those who wish to recognize Bill, the family requests that you make a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in honor of William R. Joedicke Sr. Memorial and Honor Program, St. Jude. Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; (800) 873-6983.

The family thanks those who called and visited Bill during his illness. Very special thanks are extended to Dale and Rina Van Valkenberg of Halcottsville, N.Y., for the many years of friendship, and the much love and support they always gave.

Arnold L. McLean

HARTWICK — Arnold "Cork" L. McLean, 68, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at his home in Hartwick.

He was born Sept. 20, 1934, in Edmeston, the son of Willard and Ella (Southworth) McLean. He married Dorothy M. Kelsey on Sept. 20, 1958.

Growing up on the family farm instilled a very strong work ethic. His days were always busy, be it logging, woodworking, or creating hanging planters from old farm equipment. His free time was spent hunting deer, or making maple syrup.

Cork is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his children Rose Morley, Arnold L. McLean Jr., and Paul McLean and his wife, Theresa; three grandchildren and their spouses, Rhiannon and Eric Pysnik, Jacob Morley, and Shanna and Willie DuBose; and two great-grandchildren Shawn and Cheyanne. He is also survived by eight sisters, Beulah Osborn, Edna Ruland, Beatrice Crockford, Alberta Eastman, Gladys Scrivener, Columbine O'Blak, Marjorie Synder and Albeama Gabroshik, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Cork was predeceased by his son-in-law Timothy Morley and eight siblings, Leonard McLean, Clyde McLean, Erma Hughes, Wanda Stewart, Lyle McLean, Kenneth McLean, Nelson McLean, and "White" McLean.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 7, at 11 a.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston with the Rev. John Young officiating.

Calling hours will be held Sunday, April 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in the spring at Hartwick Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Cork's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Catherine B. White

NORWICH — Catherine B. White, 78, formerly of Sheldon Street, Norwich, and a lifelong Norwich resident, passed away Thursday afternoon, April 3, 2003, at Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City.

Catherine was born Jan. 3, 1925, in Norwich, at the family home on Sheldon Street, the daughter of John and Edith (Edmonds) Byrne. On Sept. 8, 1960, in Oxford, she married Kenneth J. White, who passed away on Oct. 17, 1991.

Catherine made her home in Norwich all of her life, living in the family home on Sheldon Street. She attended and graduated from the Norwich High School with the Class of 1943. Deciding to further her education, she attended and graduated from Morrisville College, earning her degree as a dietitian, Returning home, Catherine gained employment as a dietitian with the Chenango Memorial Hospital. She then went to work as a file clerk for Norwich-Eaton Pharmaceutical Co., where she was employed for 32 years. She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church.

Following her retirement, Catherine enjoyed traveling around to area bingo games and also liked being at home to do her cooking and baking.

Catherine is survived by her daughter, Anne Marie Mangelli of Now Berlin; her granddaughters, Sara Brown and Amanda Smith, both of New Berlin; her great-grandson, Monoah Kenneth Brown; and her sister Edith ONeil of Norwich. Also surviving are her cousins, George Byrne and his wife, Anna Rose, of Norwich, and John Dolan of Norwich, who is also her godfather; an aunt, Nancy Edmonds of Norwich; and several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Besides her husband, Kenneth, Catherine was predeceased by her sister Anna A. Byrne; her brother, Thomas Byrne; her nephew Patrick O'Neil and her uncle Palmer Edmonds.

Friends may call at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

A Mass of Resurrection for Catherine will be held on Tuesday, April 8, at 11 a.m. from St. Paul's Catholic Church. The Rev. Douglas Cunningham, pastor, will officiate.

Interment will be at a later date in the Evergreen Cemetery of White Store.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Mary G. Kardys

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Mary H. Garbera Kardys, 92, beloved mother, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, April 2, 2003, in Venice, Fla.

She was born on Sept. 3, 1910, in Richfield Springs, a daughter of the late Joseph and Felicia (Bristron) Peplinski. A lifelong area resident, she attended local country schools in Fly Creek and Richfield Springs.

In 1930, she married Michael Harold Garbera Sr. They shared a loving and devoted marriage until his passing in 1957.

Mary worked as a seamstress in local clothing factories and as an assembler for General Electric in Utica.

In 1966, she married Joseph Kardys, a farmer, in Verona. Upon their retiring in 1977, they moved to Burlington Flats. Joe and Mary shared 15 years of admiration until his passing in death in 1981.

For the past few years, she has resided with her daughters in Florida.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, the former Slavonic Club of Warren and the Polish Home of Rome.

Mary was a devoted wife and an exceptional mother filled with love, compassion and values. She enjoyed her home and family life and felt she was blessed with two great marriages. She was a shining example of how to live and will be remembered by her family as always being there, for teaching them wisdom and compassion and will surely be missed. Mom. God Bless You!

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Jane Coretti and Frances Lepine and her husband, Dennis, all of North Port, Fla.; her son, Michael Garbera Jr. and his wife, Morganna, of Richfield Springs; five stepchildren, Sophie Kirk of Lee Center, Tillie Kardys of Syracuse, Theodore Kardys of Verona, Terry Deprospero of Syracuse and Mary Madonia of Rome; two sisters, Steffie Szeflinski of Richfield Springs, and Frances Szerbaniwicz of Rome; 12 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, George Coretti of Boynton Beach, Fla.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and several nieces, nephews, among them a special nephew, Joe Rurak of Verona, cousins, grand nieces and grand nephews.

The family will be present in the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terence Healy officiating.

Interment in St. Joseph's Cemetery will take place later this spring at a time to be announced.

Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Disease & Related Disorders Association, 4947 Commercial Drive, Yorkville, NY 13495. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Alice J. Sheridan

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Alice J. Sheridan, 87, of Sheridan Road, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 6, 2003, in Valley Health Services, Inc., Herkimer.

She was born on Dec. 3, 1915, in Utica, the daughter of the late Earle and Florence (Kelly) Edwards. She graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1933, and in 1937 she graduated from Cortland Normal School. She took extension courses at Buffalo State Teachers College and Syracuse University.

On June 29, 1944, she married Gerald F. Sheridan Sr. They shared a loving and devoted marriage of 45 years until his passing in 1989.

For 30 years she taught school, starting at a country school in Cortland County and then at Cherry Valley. She specialized in Special Education and continued at Richfield Springs, West Frankfort, Mohawk and Herkimer BOCES, retiring in 1986.

In addition to a teaching career and the care and nurturing she set aside for her family, Alice was active in community activities. For many years she volunteered at the local blood mobiles, Bassett Hospital and was a charter member of the Leatherstocking Caregivers.

In her leisure time, she enjoyed doing handiwork, swimming, walking, reading, traveling and quiet moments in her memory garden. Alice was a woman of wisdom and was passionate about life's principles and commitments. She was well respected by her students, colleagues and friends and will be greatly missed.

She enjoyed being around people, talking with them and sharing ideas. To know Alice was to look at and enjoy this world a little better. She had a strong belief in God and lived a quiet, devoted Christian life. She was a member of the Church of Christ Uniting.

She is survived by her sons, C. Edward Sheridan and his wife, Carol, of Bolton Landing, Gerald Sheridan and his wife, Cheryl, of Bergen, and Peter J. Sheridan and his wife, JoAnn, of Bandera, Texas.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Alice "Mikki" on Nov. 11, 1995; her granddaughter, Nekisha Sheridan on Aug. 5, 1998; and her only brother CB Edwards.

The family will be present at J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs.

As an alternative to sending flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Library, the Church of Christ Uniting or the Richfield Springs Rescue Squad.

Mildred M. Sayko

NORWICH — Mildred M. Sayko (Millie), 76, of the Parkhouse, 30 Park St., in Norwich, passed away Thursday evening, April 3, 2003, at the Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Millie was born March 26, 1927, in South Worcester, the daughter of Joseph and Agatha (Silvernail) Mitchell. She grew up in the Worcester and Otego areas and was a graduate of the Oneonta High School, Class of 1945.

She married John Sayko on Sept. 14, 1947, at St. James Church in Oneonta. Millie and John moved to Norwich in 1949.

They were dedicated members of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Norwich. Millie served as the church secretary for 30 years prior to retiring in 1989. In retirement, Millie and John enjoyed traveling, square dancing and spending time with their friends. Millie was an avid walker, often spotted pacing the hilly streets of Norwich.

Millie and John had been snowbirds for the past 10 years, enjoying the summer months in Norwich and winter at their home in Auburndale, Fla.

Millie is survived by her husband, John; and their two sons, John David Sayko and his wife, Judith of Denver, Pa., and Steven Paul Sayko and his wife, Victoria of Phoenixville, Pa.; three grandchildren, Christy Marie Lamberton, Jocelyn Roxanne Knight and Paul Nicholas Sayko; three great-grandchildren, Earnest and Anthony Knight and Caitlyn Page Lamberton. She is also survived by her sisters, Janet Castriota of DeLand, Fla., and Joyce Penwell of West Pittsburgh, Pa.; and her brother, Paul Birdsall of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Millie was predeceased by her parents, Joe and Agatha; and her brothers, Raymond Mitchell and Fred Birdsall.

There will be no calling hours. Memorial services for Millie will be held at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Norwich, at a later date to be announced.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, West Main Street, Norwich, NY 13815; the American Heart Association; or the Arthritis Foundation, Broome County Branch, 169 Riverside Drive, Binghamton, NY 13905.

Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.

Alwin J. Harrington

BURLINGTON — Alwin James Harrington, 75, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at his home in Burlington.

He was born Oct. 8, 1927, in Northville, the son of Fred and Hazel (Blowers) Harrington.

He married Betty Gail Simmons on May 7, 1952, at the Methodist Parsonage in Edmeston.

One of Alwin's earliest employment was at the Wust Sawmill in Edmeston; later he was a farmer for Earl Chapin in Pittsfield; and his final employment was for the Village of Morris. After retirement Alwin enjoyed being a gentleman farmer at his homestead in Burlington, raising calfs for veal, chickens and dairy cows. He was an avid gardener, and when he wasn't tending to his vegetables, he would be landscaping his yard.

Alwin loved his family, which included teasing each of his children and their spouses, and preparing meals for all — he was a fantastic cook.

Alwin is survived by his wife, Betty, of 50 years; his sons, Tom Harrington and companion, Jean, of Norwich, Richard and Lisa Harrington of Sherburne, Jack Harrington and companion, Sandy, of Sherburne, and Randy and Wilma Harrington of New Berlin; his daughters and sons-in-law, Larry and Jeri Rivenburgh of Laurens, Clark and Kathy Utter of Cooperstown Junction, Robert and Barbara Jones of Unadilla Forks, and Stewart and Amy Tuttle of New Berlin; 23 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Daniel and Joyce Harrington of New Berlin, James and Sue Harrington of Edmeston, and Howard Harrington of Hope, Kan.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alwin was predeceased by his parents; his son, William James Harrington; his brothers, Fred, Ronald, Donald and Harold Harrington; and his sister, Irene Tice.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, April 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 9, at 11 a.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with Catskill Area Hospice Chaplain Jay Henderson officiating.

Interment will be in the spring at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alwin's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
