Arnold L. McLean

HARTWICK — Arnold "Cork" L. McLean, 68, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at his home in Hartwick.

He was born Sept. 20, 1934, in Edmeston, the son of Willard and Ella (Southworth) McLean. He married Dorothy M. Kelsey on Sept. 20, 1958.

Growing up on the family farm instilled a very strong work ethic. His days were always busy, be it logging, farming, woodworking or creating hanging planters from old farm equipment. His free time was spent hunting deer or making maple syrup.

Cork is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his children Rose Morley, Arnold L. McLean Jr. and Paul McLean and his wife, Theresa; three grandchildren and their spouses, Rhiannon and Eric Pysnik, Jacob Morley, and Shanna and Willie DuBose; and two great-grandchildren Shawn and Cheyanne. He is also survived by eight sisters, Beulah Osborn, Edna Ruland, Beatrice Crockford, Alberta Eastman, Gladys Scrivener, Columbine O'Blak, Marjorie Synder and Albeama Gabroshik; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Cork was predeceased by his son-in-law Timothy Morley and eight siblings, Leonard McLean, Clyde McLean, Erma Hughes, Wanda Stewart, Lyle McLean, Kenneth McLean, Nelson McLean, and "White" McLean.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 7, at 11 a.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston with the Rev. John Young officiating.

Calling hours were held 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at the funeral home.

Interment will be in the spring at Hartwick Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Cork's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Connelly B. VanValkenburgh

SIDNEY — Connelly B. VanValkenburgh, 80, of Sidney, passed away Friday, April 4, 2003, at his home.

He was born Dec. 1, 1922, son of the late Wesley J. and Evelyn (Scudder) VanValkenburgh in Halcott Center.

Connelly graduated from Sidney High School and 40 years later received his associate's degree in electrical engineering from Broome Tech.

He served his country as a paratrooper in the United States Army during World War II.

Connelly married Daisy Sites on June 24, 1942, in Masonville.

He worked at Scintilla for several years, then left to work at his father's farm in East Masonville. In 1961, he went to work for the Sidney Central School District, and retired in 1984, as superintendent of building and grounds.

After retiring, Connelly enjoyed working his large vegetable garden and working on genealogy. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sidney and the Southern Tier Genealogical Society.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Daisy, Sidney; daughter, Julie Vogt, Sidney; granddaughter, Victoria and James Hutchison, Hinesville, Ga.; grandson, Arthur Vogt, Denver, Colo.; three great-grandchildren, Audrey, Brittany and Madeline Hutchison; and several cousins.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Sidney, officiating.

Burial will be in Masonville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

James O. Sullivan

OTEGO — James O. Sullivan, 70, of Otego, died April 4, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born April 23, 1932, in West Oneonta, the son of Ora and Irma Steenrod Sullivan.

James married Betty Brown on April 24, 1965, in Otego.

James worked for the NYS DOT for 27 years as a truck driver and retired in 1989.

"Just plain James" loved staying at home with his animals and watching the wild turkey, deer and Canadian geese in the fields. When you could get James away from his place it would be to go out to eat, to a car race or to help his neighbors during haying season. Otherwise James would be home building bird houses, working in his garden or watching NASCAR on TV.

He was a former member of the Moose Lodge.

James is survived by his wife, Betty Sullivan; sons, James Sullivan II of Citra, Fla., and Larry Weill of Unadilla; daughter, Candy and husband, John Hendrickson of Oneonta; sisters, Beatrice Holmes of Stanardsville, Va., and Hilda Decker of West Oneonta; four grandchildren, James Sullivan III of Citra, Fla., Nicole Shutters of Otego, James Weill of Hampton, Va., and David Weill of Oneonta; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Lyle Sullivan.

Calling hours will be Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with the family present at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Interment will be in the spring at West Oneonta Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad in James' honor.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ira Leon Beers

ONEONTA — Ira Leon Beers, 93, died April 5, 2003, at Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, where he had been a resident for nearly eight years.

He was born March 1, 1910, in Beerston, the oldest son of Ethel T. (Gross) and Howard D. Beers.

Ira married Doris Evelyn (Williams) on April 30, 1931, in Andes.

He attended schools in Otego, and owned a dairy farm on the West Branch, Otsdawa, Otego, which he and his wife operated for many years. In the mid-60s he retired to New Port Richey, Fla., where they built a new home.

In addition to his wife, Doris; he is survived by five children, Irmabelle (Charles) Sheldon, Charles A. (Dawn) Beers, Deanna (Gordon) Utter, and Ted I. (Terri) Beers, all of Otego, and Joyce (Bruce) Shultis of Maryland. Also surviving are brothers, Albert H. Beers, Rome, and Florida; Fred H. Beers of Utah; and two sisters, Esther (George) Boddy, Livingston Manor, and Florida, and Clynita (Bartley) Sheldon of Zephyrhills, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by brothers, Floyd Beers in 1934, George A. Beers of Rome, in 1985, Herbert Nesbitt, Utah, in the 1990s; and a great-granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Robinson, Stuart, Fla., in 1988.

Ira was an active member of the First Christian Church of Otego for over 60 years. He was also a member of the Dairymen's League, Farm Bureau, several other farm organizations and the Otego Old Boys Club.

He served on the Otego Central School Board of Education for several terms, was a G.L.F. Committeeman and served as a Fire Commissioner in the Town of Otego.

Ira was an avid baseball and basketball player on Otego town teams. He will be remembered for his love of singing, especially hymns, and for playing the harmonica.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 9, 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church of Otego, with the Rev. Stephen Miller officiating. Calling hours will be at the Bookhout Funeral Home, River Street, Otego, from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, with the family in attendance.

Burial will be in East Sidney Union Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Ira may be made to the First Christian Church of Otego, County Route 6, Otego, NY 13825 or to the Alzheimer's Association, SUNY Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

Wesley R. Page

SOUTH TRENTON — Wesley Richard Page, 35, of South Trenton, and formerly of Cherry Valley, died suddenly on April 5, 2003, as the result of a motor vehicle accident.

He was born in New Haven, Conn., on July 14, 1967, the son of Richard and Carol Page. He was a 1985 graduate of Cherry Valley School, attended Cobleskill College, then he served in the U.S. Naval Submarine Service from 1987-1993.

Wesley was currently employed by Mohawk Life Systems as an elevator mechanic.

Survivors include his parents, Richard and Carol Page, of Cherry Valley; his paternal grandmother, Bertha Page of North Branford, Conn.; his loving partner, Mary Jane Quinn of South Trenton, their 2-year-old son, Wesley A. Page, and Harley Quinn, a half-brother to baby Wes. Wesley also leaves a brother, Michael and his wife, Debra Page, of Greeley, Colo., a brother, David and his wife, Lisa Page, of Caroga Lake; a sister, Mary E. and her husband, Richard Hansen, of Oneonta; and several nieces.

Wesley will be remembered by his family as a beloved father, son and brother, generous in spirit and a friend to many. His greatest joy in life was being a father and in sharing who he was with his son.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating.

Burial will be in the Cherry Valley Cemetery at a later date.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the VFW Processing Center, P.O. Box 8911, Topeka, KS 66608-8911 in memory of Wesley R. Page, years of service 1987-1993.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Emma Barnes

ARKVILLE — Emma Barnes, 87, passed away April 6, 2003, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

She was born on April 15, 1915, in Shavertown, the daughter of Benjamin and Margaret Elizabeth (Davis) Conklin.

She married Howard S. Barnes on June 18, 1937, in Margaretville. He died Aug. 17, 1984.

She was a homemaker. Since 1953, she lived in Arkville, moving from Shavertown.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Margaretville, and the New Kingston Valley Grange. She attended Shavertown and Andes schools.

Emma enjoyed playing cards with area card clubs. She sewed for many years for people in the area.

Emma is survived by one sister, Hazel Filupeit, Hampton, Conn.; two brothers, Mervin Conklin, Walton, and Floyd Conklin, Pennsylvania; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Howard and John Conklin.

Calling hours will be from noon until funeral service time at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2003, with Diane Wickham officiating at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Committal services will be held at a later in the Andes Cemetery, Andes.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Paul Lum

EAST WORCESTER — Paul Lum, 80, went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 7, 2003. He was at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill.

He was born Aug. 9, 1922, at home in Decatur, the son of Noel and May (Chamber) Lum.

He married Alice E. Gray, June of 1949, in Fort Plain. She predeceased him Nov. 18, 2001.

Paul was a lifetime area resident. He spent most of his life as a farmer and a carpenter and was retired from the State University College at Cobleskill.

Paul was a lifetime and board member at the Pilgrim Holiness Church in East Worcester. He enjoyed doing lay ministry for his church.

He is survived by two sons, Mark Lum of California, and David Lum of East Worcester; four grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Miss Mary Lum of Cobleskill; sister-in-law, Iela Lum; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Walter and Leonard.

A celebration of Paul's life will be held at the Pilgrim Holiness Church in East Worcester on Thursday, April 10, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. Friends are invited to the church for calling hours at 12:30 p.m.

Burial will be in the Ferris Family Cemetery in Decatur at a later date.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pilgrim Holiness Church, P.O. Box 643, East Worcester, NY 12064.

Arrangements by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Mary A. M. Mahlum

COOPERSTOWN — A memorial service for Mary Augusta McGown Mahlum, who died March 28, 2003, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Joseph McCarthy

ONEONTA — Joseph A. McCarthy, 81, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at the Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Joseph was born June 1, 1921, in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, the son of Nicholas and Adelaide Beals McCarthy.

He married Lois Shaver on Nov. 10, 1944, in Sidney.

He was a member of the Sixth Ward Booster Club and St. Mary's Catholic Church.

He worked at the Elmore Feed Mill, the D&H Railroad, the Oneonta School System in custodial services and various local contractors. During his retirement, he worked at the Burger King in Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lois; and their six children, Nancy and husband, Dwight, Packard of Oneonta, Joanne and husband, Jonathan, Haigh of Oneonta, Gerald and wife, Mary, McCarthy of Cohocton, Mary and husband, David, Hogan of Worcester, Carol and husband, Glen, Taylor of Derby, and David McCarthy of Mt. Airy, N.C.; a brother, Gerald McCarthy of Cornerbrook, Newfoundland; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; and 13 brothers and sisters.

There will be no calling hours. Memorial service and burial will be at a later time at the convenience of the family.

Expressions of sympathy, may be made to the Catholic Charity Children's Fund.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Carmon Kelsey

HOBART — Carmon Kelsey, 72, of Hobart, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

He was born Sept. 24, 1930, in Otego, the son of Floyd and Pearl (Bishop) Kelsey.

On September 1, 1984, he married Carol (Griffin) Kelsey.

A lifelong area resident, Carmon worked on local farms and was a handyman who will be remembered for the birdhouses he made and the lawn mowing that he enjoyed.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; a sister, Betty O'Dell, Utica; two sisters-in-law, Betty Kelsey, Waterville, and Geraldine Kelsey, Oneonta; four half-sisters and two half-brothers; several nieces and nephews; and a special niece, Diana Layman of Waterville.

A sister, Ruth Clark; and four brothers, Leslie, George, Monty and Eddie, predeceased him.

Calling hours will take place Thursday, April 10, 2003, from 9 a.m. until funeral service at 11 a.m., at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with the Rev. Richard Elder officiating.

Burial will be at a later date at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Hobart United Methodist Church or a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Grace LaFrance

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Grace LaFrance, 72, of Church Street, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2003, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, with the comfort of her family at her side.

She was born on May 17, 1930, in Richfield Springs, a daughter of the late Julian Faye and Nina (O'Connor) Maxson.

A lifelong area resident, she graduated from Richfield Springs High School.

On June 12, 1954, she married Richard "Smokey" LaFrance in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs.

For 17 years she worked as a telephone operator with New York Telephone Company. She retired in 1963 to raise her family.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, and Ganawauges Chapter DAR.

Her hobbies included quilting, reading and doing crossword puzzles. However, her family was always first in her life and Grace was happiest when surrounded by her friends and family, especially her grandchildren. She will always be remembered as a loving and caring person.

Surviving are her two sons, Philip Scott and his wife, Brenda LaFrance, of Lynchburg, Va., and Charles and his wife, Fay LaFrance, of Richfield Springs; one brother, Norman and his wife, Bette Jane Maxson, of Richfield Springs; two sisters, Marian Maxson of Richfield Springs, and Elizabeth Eysaman of Little Falls; seven grandchildren, Joshua Jeremiah, Jacob and Sarah LaFrance all of Lynchburg, Va., Marc, Gabriel and Ivy LaFrance all of Richfield Springs; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

At Grace's request there are no calling hours.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terence Healy officiating.

Interment will take place later this spring in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Public Library. Envelopes will be available at the church.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home in Richfield Springs.
