Jerome J. Batik

STAMFORD — Jerome J. (Jerry) Batik, 63, won his battle against cancer April 11, 2003, and returned to his Lord in triumph!

Jerry was born Aug. 13, 1939, in Brooklyn, to John A. and Elsie (Hrbek) Batik. He grew up in a Czech neighborhood and was proud of his heritage, continuing to speak the language of his forefathers all his life.

Graduating from Brooklyn Technical High School in June of 1957, Jerry was immediately employed by AT&T as a technician, retiring 30 years later, on July 2, 1987, as a technical engineer. He loved anything electronic, and everything in the communications field. But, most of all he loved his family and children of all ages.

He married Veronica (Ronnie) O'Hara on Oct. 7, 1961, in the House of Hope Presbyterian Church in Bellerose. She predeceased him after 39 years of marriage on Oct. 31, 2000. He later married Beverly A. Hunt on Aug. 3, 2001, in the Stamford Baptist Church, Stamford. She survives him.

He continued his scouting career after moving to Stamford in 1987, serving as the chartered organization representative until 1999, and as a unit commissioner until he retired in 2000. Working with Cubs or Scouts at any level was a joy for him. Many a Cub will remember him leading them in a loud booming "BULLY!!" cheer during pack meetings, Scout camp events, and Blue and Gold meetings.

He was on the Shehawken (Foothills) district committee, and helped form the Otschodela Council Amateur Radio Group. Jerry was a Ham radio operator, obtaining his first license in 1956 at 17. Call sign K2TNN was widely known in Ham circles. He was three years past president and two years past secretary of the Otsego Amateur Radio Club, and as a member of the ARES RACES, participated in many field Days, net controls, canoe regattas, triathlons, county fairs, and other community activities.

He was a member of the Margaretville Amateur Radio Club for some time, and also the Schoharie Amateur Radio Club.

For many years, in both Nassau and Delaware counties, Jerry served on the Red Cross Disaster Action Team. He was on the scene for the Red Cross during hurricanes, fires, accidents and natural disasters on Long Island, and floods, fires, etc., in Delaware County. He was proud of his Red Cross hard-hat, and always carried it in his vehicle — just in case.

A past president of the Stamford-Harpersfield Senior Citizens, Jerry also served as secretary of the Stamford Chamber of Commerce for some time. He was always willing to help anyone with computer problems; created menus for some of our local restaurants; programs and logos for Kiwanis and chamber activities, etc.

Jerry was always active in whatever church he attended. He worked for many years with the youth group at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Franklin Square.

He loved being a part of summer VBS programs, and doing children's sermons. He was a certified lay speaker in the Methodist Church, and as a member of the Stamford United Methodist Church until recently, was often liturgist on Sunday mornings, and assisted with Communion, etc. He became a member of the Stamford Baptist Church in 2000, and taught Sunday school, gave children's sermons, helped with video/audio programs and was also a delegate to the CYNBA Executive Board.
