Victor J. Kopcinski

ROXBURY — Victor J. Kopcinski, 79, of Campsite Road, Roxbury, died April 12, 2003, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

He was born April 22, 1923, in Brooklyn, the son of Felix Kopczynski and Valerie Lasocka.

Victor married Gladys McGrath on June 15, 1946, Long Island City. She died Sept. 25, 1995.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, Feb. 1, 1943 through May 15, 1946.

He worked at Hoffman Brewery in New York City as a warehouseman.

Victor enjoyed fishing and horse racing.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda and husband, Lee, Shultis, Roxbury; one son, John Kopcinski, Queens; two grandsons, Lawrence and Jason DeMaio; one great-grandson, Jaden DeMaio; two sisters, Clare Cannon and Mary Koscinski; and one brother, Albert Kopcinski.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, April 14, 2003, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Funeral and committal services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at Calverton Cemetery, Calverton.

Contributions may be made in memory of Victor J. Kopcinski to the Robinson Terrace (Room Improvement Fund), Route 23, Stamford, N.Y.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Paul C. Pawelchak

ONEONTA — Paul C. Pawelchak Jr., 68, of Oneonta, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, unexpectedly at his residence.

He was born May 28, 1934, in Oneonta, the son of Paul and Victoria (Mudra) Pawelchak.

He married Charlotte "Molly" Foster on July 25, 1987.

Paul attended RIT and worked in the engineering departments for Bendix and Lyncoach for a short period of time. He retired several years ago from National Linen Service where he was a sales and service representative.

Paul served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany.

He was a life member BPOE 1312, Oneonta, a member of the Oneonta Country Club, and a former member of the Oneonta Eagles and American Legion Post 259.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte "Molly" Pawelchak of West Oneonta; a brother, Adolph Buzzy of Oneonta; and three sisters, Irene Pawelchak of Troy, Annastasia Pawelchak of Albany, and Adella Langelotti of Athens, Pa. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to gather at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance,.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Lois Perry

SIDNEY CENTER — Lois Perry, 77, of Sidney Center, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2003, at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was born May 17, 1925, daughter of the late Anthony and Catherine (Yoo) Einsteder in Brooklyn.

She was a past member of the Garrison Beach Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Lois was employed as an assembler for Keith Clark in Sidney, and was also a Union Representative; she retired after 17 years of service.

Lois was very active in her grandchildren's activities, and enjoyed western movies and knitting.

She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Timothy Perry, Sidney, and Robin and Bonnie Perry, Bainbridge; two daughters and son-in-law, Jill Pinney, Sidney Center, and Jenneen and David Bush, Sidney Center; one brother, Anthony Einsteder Jr., Sidney Center; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by son, Thomas Perry Jr.; and two sisters, Evelyn Pacini and Shirley Connelly.

Friends may call Wednesday, April 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, at 11 a.m. at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Center Emergency Squad or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Robert E. Shaffer

NORTH BLENHEIM — Robert E. Shaffer, 87, of North Blenheim, died Monday, April 14, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Shaffer was born Jan. 1, 1916, in Gilboa, son of Edwin Robert and Edna Mattice Shaffer.

He graduated in 1936 from Gilboa-Conesville Central School and attended Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.

He served five years during World War II, as a corporal in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Area, participating in combat missions in the Marshall Islands, Kwajelin, Anewetok and Anjibe.

Following the war, he returned to Blenheim to operate the Shaffer Brothers Farm with his brother, Gladsby.

He was married Feb. 2, 1946, to Marion Gallagher. Mrs. Shaffer died in 1986.

Mr. Shaffer served 40 years as Supervisor of the Town of Blenheim and on the Board of Supervisors of Schoharie County, also serving as Chairman of the Board. From 1960 to 1972, he was Chairman of the Schoharie County Democratic committee. He was a member of the Susquehanna Post, American Legion and Gilboa Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Shaffer is survived by a daughter, Gail Shaffer, North Blenheim; a son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Jackie Shaffer and granddaughters, Christianna and Brienna Shaffer, all of Stamford; a niece, Sandra Gray, also of Stamford; and a nephew, Stanley Shaffer of Oneonta.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 108 Chapel St., Cobleskill.

A celebration of life service will be conducted Friday, April 18, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Blenheim Methodist Church, Route 30, North Blenheim, by the Rev. Niel Irwin.

Interment will be at a later date in Riverview Cemetery.

Memorials may go to the MEVAC Ambulance Squad, Middleburgh, NY 12122 or to the Catskill Area Hospice, Mac Arthur Avenue, Cobleskill, NY 12043.

Madeleine Bowles

WOLFEBORO, N.H. — Madeleine (Marnie) Brookes Bowles of Wolfeboro, N.H., died April 14, 2003, at her home after battling cancer.

Marnie was born in Islington, Mass., on March 21, 1927, daughter of the late Norman K. and Madeleine (Luce) Brookes of Mirror Lake, N.H.

She attended Needham High School in Needham, Mass., until 1944, when her family moved to Mirror Lake. She completed her senior year at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, graduating in 1945. She also attended the State University College at Oneonta, N.Y.

On Jan. 19, 1946, she married F. Douglas Bowles of Mirror Lake. Along with her husband she wrote and published a "A Directory of New Hampshire Ex-POWs," published by Kingswood Press of Wolfeboro in 1997.

She lived in Geneseo, N.Y., for many years and during those years she was Executive Secretary to the Latin American Project, a government agency that brought Latin American professors to New York State each year to share education information. She also owned a business, Bowles Stamps and Supplies, in Oneonta and Mirror Lake.

When her husband Dr. Bowles was on the faculty at the State University College at Oswego, N.Y., she was a sorority advisor and later in Oneonta she organized a 4-H Club for neighborhood children.

It was during her years in Oneonta that she began to quilt, later joining the Ladies of the Lake Quilters in Wolfeboro and the Carpinteria Quilter's Guild in Carpinteria, Calif. A number of relatives and close family members have received gifts of quilts. After her husband's retirement she wrote the Mirror Lake Column in the Granite State News.

She leaves her husband, F. Douglas Bowles; four children, Roderick D. Bowles of Newmarket, N.H., born. in Wolfeboro, Kris B. Palmatier of Schoharie, N.Y., Todd F. Bowles of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Jodd P. Bowles of Auburn, Maine; two sisters, Doris B. Lowry of Wolfeboro, and Priscilla B. Lewis of Melbourne, Fla.; two brothers, Donald K. Brookes of Wolfeboro, and Malcolm Brookes of New Hampshire; five grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Natalie Paoletti.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2003, at the Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 85 Mill St., Wolfeboro, N.H.

A private burial will be at Townhouse Cemetery in Tuftonboro, N.H.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be a made to the Wolfeboro Historical Society, South Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH 03894, where she had served as curator for several years.

Arthur MacNaught

HAMDEN — Arthur M. MacNaught, a lifelong Hamden resident, died at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where he had been residing.

He was born July 27, 1914, in Hamden, to Marshall and Edith Shaw MacNaught. He was married to Virginia North MacNaught. She survives.

Mr. MacNaught was employed by the Operating Engineers Local 825 Union, and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Walton.

He was a very loving grandfather.

Arthur M. MacNaught is survived by his wife, Virginia, at home in Hamden; two sons, Malcolm of Randolf, N.J., and Robert of Walton; and a daughter, Patricia M. Allen of Oneida; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by a granddaughter.

Memorial service will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Christ Episcopal Church, Walton or Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi, would be appreciated.

Adele M. Distefano

GRAND GORGE — Adele Margaret Distefano, 72, of Grand Gorge, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at her residence.

She was born on Nov. 23, 1930, in Washington, D.C.

She married Anthony Frank Distefano on March 8, 1958, on Long Island. He died August 1990.

Adele was a pilot and had been in the Civil Air Patrol. She was an A-EMT 3 and served with Rescue Squads in Bellmore, on Long Island.

She spent several years with her husband in the Grand Gorge area, hunting and enjoying the surroundings before moving to Grand Gorge in 1987, to their permanent home.

She was a member of the NRA and hunting clubs.

She is survived by daughters, Kathy D'Amico, Nancy Smith Joanne Wisniewski, and Patricia Banks; three grandsons; two granddaughters; and a great-grandson.

Private funeral services will be held under the direction of the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Contributions in memory of Adele M. Distefano may be made to the Grand Gorge Rescue Squad, Grand Gorge, NY 12434.

Arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Irvin A. Biedekapp

WALTON — Irvin A. Biedekapp of Walton, a lifelong resident of Delaware County, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at his home. He was 95.

Mr. Biedekapp worked as a driver for Sheffield Dairy in Walton. He was with the company for 42 years.

Mr. Biedekapp was born July 29, 1907, on Long Eddy, to Irvin and Minnie Calkins Biedekapp.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Walton, and a past member of the New York National Guard and the Walton Fire Department.

Mr. Biedekapp will be remembered for being a very hard worker, often working two jobs. He enjoyed the winters spent in Zephyrhills, Fla., with his many southern friends.

Irv and Laura were a very devoted couple; the honeymoon lasted their entire marriage.

He is survived by his wife, Laura; two children, Elinor Budine and Wilbur (Cindy) Biedekapp; two stepchildren, Brian Robinson and Jan (Barb) Robinson; grandchildren, Clark, Mark, Brenda, Justin, Amanda, Jessica, George, Jonathan, Julie, Jody, Carolyn, Jeannie, Cindy and Amy; 20 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Family members who died earlier include his parents; his brothers, Harold, Ernest and Frederick; sisters, Hazel and Hildred; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth and son-in-law, Ralph.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware Streets, Walton, where a service will be held Friday, April 18, 2003, at noon.

The burial in Walton Cemetery will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Hospice or a charity of your choice in the name of Irvin A. Biedekapp would be appreciated.

Robert W. O'Brien

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Robert William O'Brien, 78, of Grove Street in Cooperstown, died peacefully at home, Tuesday afternoon, April 15, 2003, surrounded by his family.

Bob was born on March 22, 1925, in the town of Hartwick, a son of the late Herbert J. and Florence L. (Bunn) O'Brien.

On May 14, 1947, he married Elizabeth L. Bridger in the parsonage of the Westville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Walter A. Miller officiating.

A member of the Cooperstown High School Class of 1943, Bob was inducted into the United States Army in September of that year. He proudly served his country with the Service Battery of the 5th Armored Division, 47th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. He was an expert Sharpshooter, skilled in using 45 Caliber Sub Machine Guns and 30 Caliber Light Machine Guns. During his service in World War II he was involved with the Rhineland Campaign and also saw action in the European, African, Middle Eastern and American Theatres of Operations.

Upon his honorable discharge in December of 1945, he returned to the Cooperstown area where he was employed on various farms and later owned and operated a tree service. In 1967, he became employed by New York Telephone as a lineman. Upon retiring in 1989, he volunteered at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, installing Life Lines.

A devoted veteran of the United States Army, Bob was an active member and Past Commander of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 and was also an active member of the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 in Cooperstown. Bob was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers and was a former member of the Cooperstown Fire Department Company No. 5. An avid fisherman and hunter, he enjoyed his memberships in the Fish and Game Clubs of both Cooperstown and Cherry Valley and the Hartwick Rod and Gun Club.

Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty, of Cooperstown; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara A. Dickison of Burlington Flats, and Mrs. Deborah Gentry and her husband, Robert, of Wilmington, Del.; one son, Robert W. (Bill) O'Brien Jr. and his wife, Jeanne, of Richfield Springs; six grandchildren, Nellie, Patty, Karen, Beth, Chris and Jeremy; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald F. O'Brien and his wife, Rose, of Norwich; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one son-in-law, William S. Dickison; two brothers, Richard P. (Dixie) O'Brien Sr. and Herbert Joseph O'Brien; and one half-brother, Corliss Sharpe.

A Veterans' memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2003, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown. Burial, with full military honors will follow in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2003, at the funeral home, when Bob's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Cooperstown Fire Department, P.O. Box 1, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Louise Q. Spahn

OTEGO — Louise Quirin Spahn, 93, of Otego, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at the Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 9, 1909, in Queens, the daughter of Louis Quirin and Bertha Krebs. They predeceased her.

She was married to William Spahn. He passed away the same day. They had lived in Otego.

She was employed as an accountant for the Long Island Railroad.

She is survived by her grandson, Stephen and Madalyn Kneeter of Milton; granddaughter, Diane and Richard Brown of Sidney Center; and great-grandchildren, Christine Pierce, David Pierce, Matthew Kneeter and Adam Kneeter.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Louise Kneeter, in 1976.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2003 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2003, at the DiDonato Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Ballou officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Charles Cemetery in Gardiner.

Arrangements are by the DiDonato Funeral Service Inc. in Marlboro.
