William Spahn

OTEGO — William Spahn, 86, of Otego, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at the Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie.

He was born Feb. 11, 1917, in Darmstadt, Germany, the son of Jakob Spahn and Pauline Nunnez. They predeceased him.

He was married to Louise Quirin. She passed away the same day. They had lived in Otego.

He was employed at the Mount Vernon Bakery.

He is survived by his grandson, Stephen and Madalyn Kneeter of Milton; granddaughter, Diane and Richard Brown of Sidney Center; and great-grandchildren, Christine Pierce, David Pierce, Matthew Kneeter and Adam Kneeter.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Louise Kneeter, in 1976.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2003, at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2003, at the DiDonato Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Ballou officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Charles Cemetery in Gardiner.

Arrangements are by the DiDonato Funeral Service Inc. in Marlboro.

Inabelle Selan

FLY CREEK — Mrs. Inabelle ("Tiny") Selan, 83, of Stonehouse Road in Fly Creek, died Tuesday evening, April 15, 2003, at her home.

Tiny was born on Oct. 29, 1919, in Fly Creek, a daughter of Virgil and Myrtle (Eldred) Truax.

She married Edward J. Selan on March 23, 1937. Mr. Selan died on July 24, 2000.

A lifelong Fly Creek resident, Tiny attended the Taylor Town School. She devoted her life to raising her family and tending to their home.

A member of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, she was a former member of the Fly Creek Historical Society and enjoyed collecting antiques, especially glassware.

Tiny is survived by her two sons, Jerry E. Selan and his wife, Phyllis, of Cooperstown, and Randy Selan of Fly Creek; two grandchildren, Ben Selan of Herndon, Va., and Lindsey Selan of Cooperstown; one nephew, James Truax of Fly Creek; and two nieces, Betty Funke of South New Berlin, and Evelyn Davis of Herkimer.

She was predeceased by her brother, Harold J. Truax, who died Dec. 16, 1970; and her sister, Mrs. Hilda J. Vroman, who died May 10, 1985.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2003, in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church in Oneonta, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, or to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Richard A. Ford

OTEGO — Richard A. Ford, 78, of Otego, died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at his residence after a long illness, with his family at his side.

He was born May 23, 1924, in DeLancey, the son of Isaac and Rosa (York) Ford.

He married the former Sue Decker on Sept. 1, 1950, in Walton. She survives him.

Dick grew up in DeLancey and raised his family in the Unadilla and Otego area.

He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II where he served as a sergeant and served as a radio and intercept operator. He retired in 1986 from the D&H Railroad in Oneonta, where he worked as a carpenter for 12 years.

He was a machinist at Bendix in Sidney for 25 years and had also been a self-employed carpenter at one time. After his retirement from the railroad he worked at the Otsdawa Greenhouse in Otego.

Dick is survived by his wife, Sue Ford, of Otego; a daughter and son-in-law, SuAnne J. Hurlburt and Stuart of Otego; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard W. Ford and Denise of Darlington, Wis.; one brother, Stewart Ford of Titusville, Fla.; his grandchildren, Adam and Christal Hurlburt of Otego, Mandy Jones of Kansas, Josh Hoesly of Wisconsin, Nicole D'Angelo of Georgia, twin grandsons, Casey and Shawn Ford and Ben Ford, all of Wisconsin; four great-grandchildren, Alexis and Justin Hurlburt and Tyler and Tristin Jones; and by several nieces, nephews and many good friends.

Dick was predeceased by a son, Wayne Richard Ford; a grandson, Michael Justin Hurlburt; and several brothers and sisters.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family at the Hamden Cemetery in Hamden.

Friends may call at the home of SuAnne and Stuart Hurlburt of Otego, after noon, Saturday, April 19, 2003, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Otego Emergency Squad, River Street, Otego, NY 13825 or to the Michael J. Hurlburt Scholarship Fund, care of Unatego Jr./Sr. High School, 2641 State Highway 7, Otego, NY 13825.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St. in Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Robert G. Hull

MILFORD — Robert G. Hull, 58, of Milford, formerly of Litchfield, passed away, April 16, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare Center in Cooperstown.

He was born March 6, 1945, in Ilion, the son of Stewart and Mary Carter Hull.

Robert received his education in West Winfield schools, and married Janet Casler Wellenstein.

Mr. Hull was employed at Chicago Pneumatic, and operated Petticoat Junction.

Besides his wife, Janet; he is survived by two sons, Byron and Robert; two stepdaughters, Denise May and Pvt. Diane Northington; grandchildren Jessica, Jennifer, Dylan, Megan, Corey, Cody and Jeremiah Hull; and stepgranddaughter Sandy Crouse.

Also surviving are his sisters and their spouses, Olwen Drake, Cynthia and Joseph Saniscarco, Elaine and John Wright, Bonnie and James Bailey, and Arlene and Nicholas Andela; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne and June, Donald and Beverly, Keith and Janice, and Eugene and Jeri.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial services will be Monday 10 a.m., at the Richfield Springs Bible Church, Church Street, Richfield Springs.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a charity of your choice.

Giovanni Grigoli

ONEONTA — Mr. Giovanni Grigoli, 75, passed away on April 17, 2003, at Bassett Hospital.

He was born on Aug. 29, 1927, the son of Antonino and Crocifissa Fiorello Grigoli of Carini, Sicily.

He married Rosa Picone on April 6, 1946, in Sicily. They immigrated to America soon after and he found employment as a construction foreman in Brooklyn. He worked on many sites, but his favorites were the World Trade Center and Madison Square Garden.

His first love and longest profession was dairy farming.

He moved his family to Stamford in 1967 and ran two farms. One farm is in Stamford and the second is in Southside Oneonta. John also assisted his sons in their restaurants. Many will remember him working at Sal's Pizzeria in Cooperstown, where he was known as "Pops."

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rosa Picone; his four sons and their wives, Anthony and Rosa Grigoli, Bainbridge, Joseph and Josephine Grigoli, Oneonta, Salvatore and Diane Grigoli, Cooperstown, and John Grigoli, Cooperstown. He had nine grandchildren, John, Croce and Anthony Grigoli (sons of Tony and Rosa), John and Rose Grigoli (son and daughter of Joseph and Josephine), and Roseanne, Natalie, Christina, and soon to arrive Samuel Grigoli (daughters and son of Salvatore and Diane.) He had many nieces and nephews from Brooklyn, and Sicily.

Giovanni will always be remembered as a man who worked hard in this life, who loved his family and his farms.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.

Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons. A reception at the Parish Center will follow the graveside service.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 21, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Louis B. Hager Cancer Clinic at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Ralph C. Whitney

FRANKLIN — Memorial services for Ralph C. Whitney will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 2003, with the Rev. Lyle Linder officiating, at the Franklin Methodist Church in Franklin.

Robert W. O'Brien

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Robert William O'Brien, 78, of Grove Street in Cooperstown, died peacefully at home, Tuesday afternoon, April 15, 2003, surrounded by his family.

Bob was born on March 22, 1925, in the town of Hartwick, a son of the late Herbert J. and Florence L. (Bunn) O'Brien.

On May 14, 1947, he married Elizabeth L. Bridger in the parsonage of the Westville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Walter A. Miller officiating.

A member of the Cooperstown High School Class of 1943, Bob was inducted into the United States Army in September of that year. He proudly served his country with the Service Battery of the 5th Armored Division, 47th Armored Field Artillery Battalion.

He was an expert Sharpshooter, skilled in using 45 Caliber Sub Machine Guns and 30 Caliber Light Machine Guns. During his service in World War II he was involved with the Rhineland Campaign and also saw action in the European, African, Middle Eastern and American Theatres of Operations.

Upon his honorable discharge in December of 1945, he returned to the Cooperstown area where he was employed on various farms and later owned and operated a tree service. In 1967, he became employed by New York Telephone as a lineman. Upon retiring in 1989, he volunteered at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, installing Life Lines.

A devoted veteran of the United States Army, Bob was an active member and Past Commander of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 and was also an active member of the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 in Cooperstown.

Bob was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers and was a former member of the Cooperstown Fire Department Company No. 5. An avid fisherman and hunter, he enjoyed his memberships in the Fish and Game Clubs of both Cooperstown and Cherry Valley and the Hartwick Rod and Gun Club.

Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty, of Cooperstown; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara A. Dickison of Burlington Flats, and Mrs. Deborah Gentry and her husband, Robert, of Wilmington, Del.; one son, Robert W. (Bill) O'Brien Jr. and his wife, Jeanne, of Richfield Springs; six grandchildren, Nellie, Patty, Karen, Beth, Chris and Jeremy; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald F. O'Brien and his wife, Rose, of Norwich; two sisters-in-law, Jane O'Brien of Laurens, and Joyce Sharpe of Hartwick; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one son-in-law, William S. Dickison; two brothers, Richard P. (Dixie) O'Brien Sr. and Herbert Joseph O'Brien; and one half-brother, Corliss Sharpe.

A Veterans' memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2003, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown. Burial, with full military honors will follow in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2003, at the funeral home, when Bob's family will be in attendance.

Carlton M. Martin

PRATTSVILLE — Carlton Moseman Martin, 84, a lifelong resident of Prattsville, died on Friday, April 18, 2003, at St. Clares Hospital in Schenectady.

He was born on Sept. 29, 1918, to Carlos and Leona (Moseman) Martin in Little Westkill in the town of Prattsville.

Mr. Martin retired from the New York State Department of Transportation in 1980, after 37 years of service.

His greatest pride and accomplishment were his children, grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Louise (Bloodgood) Martin, who he married on Nov. 15, 1941. He is also survived by his children, Dennis and daughter-in-law, Ruth, of Windham, David and daughter-in-law, Debbie, of Prattsville, Sandra and son-in-law, Donald Meade, of Middleburgh, Sharon and son-in-law, Frank Clark, of Delanson, and Diane and son-in-law, Timothy Widenor, of Schenectady. He was the grandfather of Scott Meade and his wife, Kate, of Niskayuna, Sonya Meade and her fiancee, Jaime Kikpole, of Albany, and Chelsea Martin of Prattsville. He was the stepgrandfather of Kerry Thorington and Erica Perry. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Hannah, Emily and Jordan Meade of Niskayuna.

Calling hours will be on Monday, April 21, 2003, at Decker Funeral Home, Windham, from 7 to 9 p.m., and on Tuesday, April 22, 2003, from 11 a.m. to noon. A funeral service will be conducted at noon with the Rev. Sharon Sour, chaplain of the Community Hospice of Schenectady, officiating.

Interment will follow at the Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Memorial donations may be made to his memory to either the Prattsville Rescue Squad or the Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady NY 12308.

Funeral services were entrusted to the Decker Funeral Home in Windham.

Rose Mary Hugick

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Rose Mary Hugick, 85, of William Street entered into eternal rest after a long illness on Friday evening, April 18, 2003, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born on July 22, 1917, in New York City, daughter of the late Joseph and Magdalena Lamasz Bednarz. Rose Mary was raised and educated in New York City public schools.

On Jan. 30, 1937, she married Michael J. Hugick in New York. It was the same year she and her husband came to Richfield Springs and McKoons Crossing. For 22 years they owned and operated their dairy farm on Butternut Road then moved to William Street in the village, where they have resided since. For a number of years, Mrs. Hugick worked for the Shurkatch Corp. in Richfield Springs.

Mrs. Hugick had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Catholic life. She was a member of Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, and the Rosary Altar Society. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Michael; two sons, Andrew and his wife, Nancy, Hugick, and Robert Hugick and his special friend, Erin; two daughters, Loretta and her husband, Kenneth Wilson, and Rosemary Hugick, all of Richfield Springs; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents; three sisters, Sylvia Gosk, Josephine Yurgal and Emelia Klimowich; and a brother, Joseph Bednarz, preceded her in death.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral at J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, will be held on Wednesday, 9:30 a.m., with a Mass of Christian burial celebrated in Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Terence Healy officiating.

Mrs. Hugick will be laid to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department or Saint Joseph's Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Helmut E. Hoeher

FORT PLAIN — Helmut E. Hoeher, 78, of Lane Road died suddenly on Thursday, April 17, 2003, at his home.

He was born on May 18, 1924, in Pensig, Germany, a son of Erich and Minna Jaeckle Hoeher.

He and his wife, Hildegard, jointly owned and operated River Implement Co. Inc. in Middleburgh, before his retirement in 1989. His wife predeceased him in 1989.

Before immigrating to America in 1954, Helmut was a veteran of World War II, having served in the German Navy as an officer on U-400 and U-371. He survived the destruction of the U-371 in May of 1944, in the Mediterranean Sea and was captured by American sailors on the USSJE Campbell (DE-70). He spent the remainder of the war as a POW in Biloxi, Miss. He was a proud member of the USS Campbell reunion group and the U-371 survivors group.

Survivors include a daughter, Angelika Hoeher-Kuhne and her husband, Michael, of Fort Plain; a son, Helmut, and his wife, Dyan, of West Fulton; two sisters, Ursula Latocha of Edison, N.J., and Ilse Nebling of Cobleskill; two grandchildren, Alexandria and Janson Hoeher; four stepgrandchildren, Fred, Sarah, Ann and Alex Kuhne; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Ingeborg Flesch of Hudson, Fla.

A sister, Rosemarie Yakowenko, predeceased him in 1991.

He was a member of the Reformed Church in Fort Plain, Concordia Singing Society in Gloversville and a social member of the American Legion in Freeland, Pa.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April, 22, 2003, at the Middleburgh Reformed Church, with the Rev. Mary Wisner officiating.

Interment in the Manorkill Cemetery will take place at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fort Plain Reformed Church, Fort Plain, NY 13339 or Ayers Memorial Animal Shelter, Sprakers, NY 12166.

Arrangements are by the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, Middleburgh and the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, Cobleskill.
