Celia Atkins Barnes

MARGARETVILLE — Celia Atkins Barnes, 77, of Cemetery Road, Margaretville, died April 8, 2003, in Chase Mills.

She was married to Douglas B. Barnes. He died April 16, 1997.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Kelly Corners Cemetery, Kelly Corners, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh, officiating. Burial will be in Kelly Corners Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Lillian F. Imwalle

CLIFTON PARK — Lillian F. Imwalle, 82, of Clifton Park, died April 18, 2003, at home.

She was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, on June 6, 1920, the daughter of Francis and Pauline (Auge) Wandor.

She married Daniel R. Imwalle of Cincinnati, Ohio, on Sept. 11, 1948, in New York City. He predeceased her on March 12, 1977.

Lillian was educated at the Ursuline Academy, Wilmington, Del., Wadleigh High School and Columbia University.

She was a writer of poetry and articles, who had published in several monthly magazines. She was employed by Street & Smith Publications, Sloane Advertising, R.H. Macy and Allied Stores as a copywriter.

During World War II, Lillian served with the American Red Cross as staff assistant in Honolulu, Hawaii, and in Weisbaden, Germany, until 1947.

She was active in the O'Connor Hospital Guild, having served as Vice President during 1975 and in 1976 as a Publicity Committeeman. She was on the Advisory Board of Horizons and a member of the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce.

She was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Delhi, and Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church in Clifton Park.

Lillian is survived by three children, a daughter, Susan and David Summers of Clifton Park, and their children, Kimberlee A. Harris, Alanna Summers and Jon Summers; a son, James and Nancy Imwalle of Bethel, Conn., and their children, Danielle Imwalle and Kaitlin Imwalle; and a son, Daniel and Josephine Imwalle of Lake Ronkonkoma, and their children, Daniel Louis Imwalle, Johanna Imwalle and Julie Anne Imwalle; a sister, Caroline Ennis of Tucson, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Edward M. Imwalle, on July 14, 2002.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi, on Tuesday, April 22, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Delhi, on Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. James McDevitt officiating. Burial will follow the services in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Robert Pestel

HAHNENKLEE, Germany — Dr. Robert Pestel, 61, died in Hahnenklee, Germany, on Thursday, April 17, 2003, after a long fight against cancer.

Dr. Robert Pestel, a 1958 graduate of Oneonta High School, N.Y., had attended his 40th High School Reunion in Oneonta. Robin, as he was known to his friends, stayed in close contact with a number of his high school friends who remember him as an avid chess player.

After graduating from Oneonta, he attended college in Germany and obtained his Ph.D. from Hanover Technical University.

Dr. Pestel was a Senior Scientific Officer at the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium, and worked in the Directorate of the Information Society.

He was deeply dedicated to the creation of a new concept of civilized society, which included sustainable growth in a world of fully integrated technologies. He wrote and lectured widely on the importance of establishing a knowledge-based world economy.

In recent public lectures, Dr. Pestel highlighted new challenges and perspectives that become possible through the emergence of advanced technologies that use fewer natural resources, reduce pollution and risks to health and safety, and are cheaper than their predecessors.

Both in his life and his work, he sought win-win scenarios.

He is survived by his wife, Inge; his daughter Sabine, a research veterinarian; his mother, Mary Jaqueline Hoopes, a longtime Oneonta resident who taught German at Hartwick College and the State University College of Technology at Delhi. He is also survived by his sisters, Susanne Pestel-Rickert of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Wendy Lehmann of Rochester, N.Y.; and his brother, Michael Pestel of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2003, at the St. Matthias Episcopal Church, 115 East St., East Rochester, N.Y.

Memorial services will be held in Hahnenklee, Germany, in mid-May.

Josephine D'Agostino

SIDNEY — Josephine D'Agostino, 89, of Sidney, and formerly of Cape Coral, Fla., passed away Sunday evening, April 20, 2003, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born May 20, 1913, in New York, the daughter of the late Maurice and Cecelia Pezone.

On April 21, 1940, she married Julius C. D'Agostino in the Bronx. He predeceased her in March 1984.

Josephine for several years was a seamstress and was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union on Long Island.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, the Italian American Club, the Long Island Club and other clubs in Cape Coral, Fla.

She is survived by two sons, Julius and Catherine D'Agostino of Brooklyn, Conn., and John D'Agostino and Marilyn Schnieder of Bristow, Va.; daughter, Christine and Mark Granan of Sidney; sister Rae Binkert of Fairlawn, N.J.; her grandchildren, Michael and Timothy D'Agostino, and Sean and Matthew Granan; and a great-grandchild, Jasmine; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her three brothers, Peter, Anthony and Ralph Pezone; and a sister, Caroline Caiazzo, predeceased Josephine.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 2003, from the Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, with the Rev. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in St. Johns Cemetery, Queens.

Friends are invited to call Wednesday, when her family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sacred Heart Church, 15 Liberty St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Gerhard Hans Kuhn

GRAND GORGE — Gerhard Hans Kuhn, 69, of Kuhn Road, Grand Gorge, died April 19, 2003, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 8, 1933, in Bay Shore on Long Island, he was the son of Walter and Erna (Jansky) Kuhn.

He never married. He was a retired dairy farmer, assisting on the family farm until last year.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge. Gerhard enjoyed bowling and hunting.

Mr. Kuhn is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Janet Kuhn, Las Vegas, Nev., and Fred and Lee Kuhn, Grand Gorge; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Gertrude and David Holtslag, Loveland, Colo., and Annemarie and Jim Marquit, Middleburgh; and several nieces and nephews,

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2003, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Diane Berdan officiating.

Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Grand Gorge.

Contributions in memory of Gerhard Hans Kuhn may be sent to the Memorial Fund of the United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge, N.Y.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Carl Foster

MASONVILLE — Carl Foster, 72, of Masonville, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2003, at The Hospital in Sidney.

He was born May 3, 1930, son of the late Clifton E. and Lena (Wheeler) Foster in Masonville.

Carl married Dawn Benedict on Dec. 25, 1966.

He worked for Demeree's Chevrolet in Bainbridge for 15 years and was employed by York Modern in Unadilla when he retired.

Carl is survived by his wife, Dawn Foster, Masonville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Paul Benkovitz, Guilford, and Elizabeth and Dennis Ciborowski, Kirkwood; granddaughter, Amanda Jane Benkovitz; one brother, Clifton A. Foster, Masonville, two sisters, Ethel Mae Steele, Masonville, and Lena Irwin, Masonville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is predeceased by two sisters, Myona Clift and Ruth Stoddard.

Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in Masonville Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Goldenberg, pastor of the Circle Drive Alliance Church, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or the American Cancer Society.

Alexander M. Lasaka

STAMFORD — Alexander M. Lasaka, 81, of Stamford, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

He was born May 2, 1921, in New York City.

A longtime area resident of more than 40 years, Mr. Lasaka was noted as being one of the most popular math teachers at Stamford Central School.

A World War II veteran, he served his country in the United States Army Air Force from 1941 until 1945.

Mr. Lasaka enjoyed membership in the Stamford Golf Club for many years.

He is survived by a sister, Katherine Brooks of Capitola, Calif.; a niece, Therese LaRose of Brooklyn; a nephew, Richard LaRose of Brooklyn; and a friend, Jack Antilety of Jefferson.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 40 Cornell Ave. in Hobart, on Wednesday, April 23, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Stamford, on Thursday, April 24, 2003, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Edward Ryan officiating. Burial will follow the services in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.

Bernice Jane Kane

SCHENEVUS — Bernice Jane Kane, 81, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home in Oneonta.

Bernie was born Nov. 30, 1921, in Downsville, the daughter of the late Albert and Martha (Paul) Young.

She had lived in Schenevus for over 30 years and was employed by Bell Hotel in Schenevus, as a bartender for many years.

She is survived by one sister, Marion V. and her husband, James Holcomb, of Oneonta; and good friends, Bruno Ramessini of Schenevus and his daughter, Wendy Hill of Westford; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Kane; two sisters, Charlotte Hanvey and Dorothy Hendrickson; and a brother, Gerald Young.

The funeral will be Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus, with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Worcester, officiating. Burial will follow in Schenevus Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Arrangements by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Eugene M. Trask

MARYLAND — The graveside service for Eugene M. Trask, 83, who died on March 16, 2003, will be held Saturday, April 26, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Maryland Cemetery, with the Rev. Henry Geerken officiating and full military honors presented by the Schenevus VFW Post 2752.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Harvey Cline Jr.

MILFORD — Mr. Harvey (Pete) R. Cline Jr., 73, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Sept. 15, 1929, the son of Harvey Sr. and Lydia (Miller) Cline.

On Feb. 19, 1955, he married Joan Buddle. She predeceased him on April 2, 1986. In the fall of 1986, he married Ruth Van Loan. She predeceased him March 17, 1999.

He was a Korean War veteran. He worked on various farm jobs for many years before working at the Lakefront Motel as a groundskeeper. He also worked for the town of Springfield Highway Department. He loved to be with his family. He also enjoyed hunting and especially fishing.

Survivors include his companion, Joyce Weaver of Milford; daughter, Faith Chase, and her companion, Robert Baker, of Hartwick; son, Russell Cline and his companion, Sandra Roberts, of Middlefield; stepmother, Roxy Cline of Edmeston; sisters, Jeanette Benjamin and her husband, Donald, of Burlington Green and Leona Utter and her husband, David, of Oneonta; a brother, Lyle, and his wife, Jeanne, of Oxford; grandsons, Steven Chase and his wife, Christine, of Edmeston, Peter Chase and his wife, Alicia, of Toddsville, Jared Cline of Hertford, N.C., and Christopher Baker of Liberty; granddaughters, Deborah Sprague of Laurens, Chris Cline of Hertford, N.C., Kelly Baker of Rosco, Heather Slater and her companion, Kevin Stickles, of Fly Creek and Heidi Sellick of Oneonta; great-grandchildren, Nathan and Ronald Tippet, Dakota and Shane Chase, Joseph, Sabrina and Jeremiah Sprague, McKayla and McKenzie Slater and Kyle Stickles; stepchildren, Dorothy Holbrook and her husband, Andy, and their three children of Port Henry, Richard Fuller of Long Island and Jeffrey and Brenda Fuller and their four children of Decatur; a very special longtime friend, Lee Preston and his wife, Bessie; many nieces and nephews; and his faithful companions, Bones (dog) and Smoke (bird).

He was predeceased by his father and a sister, Agnes Rogers.

An 11 a.m. calling hour will precede the funeral.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, April 28, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lavern Saxer officiating.

Burial will follow in the Fly Creek Cemetery, Fly Creek. A reception will be held at the Hartwick Seminary Fire Station following the services.

Contributions may be made to the Milford Emergency Squad or the Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Clarence W. Howard

FRANKLIN — Clarence W. Howard, 85, of Franklin, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2003, at Albany Medical Center in Albany.

He was born Aug. 14, 1917, in Detroit, Mich., the son of Robert R. and Eva (Gaham) Howard. He married Mabel Comino in 1942, and she predeceased him in 1972.

Clarence and his brother Russell operated Howard Brothers dairy farm in Franklin for many years. He also was a carpenter and worked for Bagnardi Brothers and Albert E. Farone.

He was a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church.

Clarence loved country music and dancing, as well as fishing. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor.

He is survived by his children, Linda and Pete Clark of Delhi and William C. Howard of Mount Vision; his grandchildren, Terri and Martin Stallone of Wyomissing, Pa., and Thomas and Kelly Clark of Delhi; his great-grandchildren, Darin, Kyle and Taylor Clark and Wade and Jolie Stallone; a sister, Mable McManus of San Diego, Calif.; a niece, Bertha Miller of Cazenovia; and a nephew, Ronald McManus of San Diego, Calif.

He was predeceased by two brothers and a sister, Russell R. Howard, Raymond Howard and Alice Getman.

There will be no calling hours.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 28, at 2 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor of his church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Stephen G. Shields

ORLANDO, Fla. — Stephen G. Shields, 91, a retired newspaper editor and former Daily Star employee, died Friday, April 18, 2003, from heart failure at his home in Orlando, Fla.

Mr. Shields was born in Clarks Summit, Pa., to Ralph and Helen Shields. He was a graduate of New York University. Mr. Shields also served 21/2 years in the Army Air Corps.

During a journalism career spanning 60 years, Mr. Shields worked at a number of newspapers including the Oneonta Daily Star in the late 1940s and '50s, the Binghamton Press, Philadelphia Inquirer and Beach Haven Times-Beacon. He held various positions including news reporter, sports writer and copy editor.

Mr. Shields was a longtime resident of Beach Haven, N.J., before moving to Orlando in 2001. He was a lector and minister of the Eucharist for the St. Francis Parish on Long Beach Island.

Mr. Shields enjoyed painting, gardening and National League baseball. He was also a champion swimmer in his early years. He taught many people to swim throughout his many years.

Mr. Shields is survived by his brother, Nicholas Shields; his sons Stephen Jr. and Patrick Shields; his daughters, Janet Pingrey, Judith Shields and Martha Shields; his stepson, Michael Tarble; and his stepdaughters, Eileen O'Brien and Karen Spicer. Mr. Shields had 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

His wife, Gerry, died in 1992, and his brother, George, is deceased.

A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Church on 3rd Street in Beach Haven on Saturday, May 3, at 1 p.m.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
