Edward J. Stelmach

CONWAY, S.C. — Edward J. Stelmach, of Conway, S.C., formerly of Sidney, N.Y., died Feb. 7, 2003, of congestive heart failure.

He was born Nov. 10, 1916, in Buffalo, N.Y., to Bartholomew and Josephine Stelmach.

He was a veteran of WWII and received the Purple Heart. As a young adult, he served with the Civilian Conservation Corps maintaining public lands and forests. He was a member of the Sidney VFW No. 7914, the Masonic Lodge No. 255, adjunct and past commander of the American Legion Post No. 183, and a Sidney volunteer firefighter. He retired from Bendix Corp. in 1979 as a tool maker inspector of 39 years.

Survivors include Betty, his wife of 55 years; a son, Ed Stelmach, of Conway, S.C.; three daughters, Josephine (Joie) Jackman of Swattswood, N.J., Andrea (Andie) Mayo of Whitney Point, N.Y., and Colleen Chrycy of Miami, Fla.; son-in-law, Joel Chrycy of Miami, Fla.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Stella Hallederer of Buffalo, N.Y., and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a grandson.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, at the Landers Funeral Home, Main Street, Sidney.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Legion Post No. 183, Sidney.

Pearl M. Moore

DELHI — Pearl M. Moore, 94, an Andes native and former longtime Lake Delaware, Delhi, resident, passed away Thursday morning, April 24, 2003, at her home in Zephyrhills, Fla.

The daughter of John and Christina (Close) Ackerley, she was born Sept. 14, 1908, in Andes, and married Robert G. Moore at St. James Church, Lake Delaware, on Feb. 21, 1925. He died Sept. 24, 1977.

The Moores lived at Lake Delaware from 1933 to 1976, at which time they purchased a winter home in Zephyrhills, Fla., where Pearl was a homemaker and member of the Church of the Living Word.

Surviving are three sons, Robert J. Moore of Zephyrhills, Fla., Roger N. Moore of Omaha, Ariz., and Larry A. Moore of Oscodo, Mich.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth, and two sons, Harry G. and Wayne G. Moore.

Friends are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, and where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, by the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh of the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville. Burial will follow in the Bovina Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son, Delhi.

Lillian Jankowski

STAMFORD — Mrs. Lillian Jankowski, 83, of Stamford, N.Y., and formerly of North Merrick, N.Y., passed away on Friday, April 25, 2003.

She was born on Feb. 28, 1920, in Manhattan, N.Y., the daughter of the late Karol and Anna (Penkala) Kruszewski.

She married Peter Jankowski of Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 31, 1942, in Brooklyn. He predeceased her July 29, 1991.

She was a bank teller and retired from Chemical Bank in Bayside, N.Y., in 1982.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford. Her biggest love was animals, in particular, dogs. She derived great pleasure in visiting with and being visited by her "grand dogs." Her favorite TV channel was Animal Planet.

Her two brothers, Carl and Theodore Kruszewski, and two sisters, Felicia Truskalaski and Stella Nowinski, predeceased her.

She is survived by one brother, Eugene Kruszewski of Trinity, Fla.; two daughters, Christine Ambrose of Bethpage, N.Y., and Maryann and Frank Dwyer of Davenport, N.Y.; and four grandchildren, James and Joann Dwyer of West Lawn, Pa., Brian Dwyer of Oneonta, N.Y., and Joseph Calderone of Charleston, S.C.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, on Monday, April 28.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at noon on Tuesday, April 29, at Sacred Heart Church in Stamford.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Marcia Pearsall

SCHENEVUS — Marcia Gertrude Pearsall, 91, of Schenevus, died on April 27, 2003, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Oneonta.

She was born Nov. 23, 1911, in Westford, the daughter of Martin and Gertrude (Gano) Pickard, and was married to Frank H. Pearsall. He died May, 1997. They had been residents of Oneonta, Westford, East Springfield, Cherry Valley and most recently, Schenevus.

Marcia graduated from Westford Union School in 1930 and from Wilson Memorial School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1935. After providing private duty nursing for several years, she was employed in the recovery room at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital for 23 years until her retirement.

Marcia was a member of the Westford (United) Methodist Church, where she was the oldest surviving parishioner. She was also a member of the Schenevus and Cherry Valley Rebekah Assemblies, the Young At Heart, Senior Citizens of Schenevus, United Methodist Women, and the Bassett Hospital Retired Nurses Association.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Ann and Robert G. Huntington of Cooperstown; granddaughters, Gracia Huntington, Palo Alto, Calif., and Anne Fielden and her husband, Donald, and three great-grandchildren, Dodge, Elinor, and Samuel Fielden of Louisville, Ky. Also surviving is her older sister, Cora Hilsinger of Worcester; sister-in-law, Doris Pearsall of Orlando, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and their spouses, Donna and Jack Nagle, Worcester; Joan and Gilbert Henry, Candor; Andrew and Trudy Colvin, Bloomville; Bill and Margery Higgins, Oneonta; Ann and James Rasmussen of Poteet, Texas; Frank Minozzi, York, S.C.; Shat Natel of Newland, N.C.; Oscar and Kay Foutch, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Harold and Harriet Foutch, Cameron, N.C.

A sister, Neva Foutch; and nephews, Robert and Gerald Foutch predeceased her.

A memorial reception will be held for family and friends at 13 Main St. in Cooperstown, from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 4.

Burial services will be private in the Westford Cemetery.

It is requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Westford United Methodist Church.

Arrangements will be by the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus.

Charles Hastings

WALTON — Charles W. Hastings, 82, of Walton, passed away Sunday morning, April 27, 2003, in the Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton, after a long illness.

Mr. Hastings was born in Walton, the son of William J. and Edith Miller Hastings. Mr. Hastings married the former Helen Coe on July 16, 1942, in Hamden.

He served in the Army as a medic in the 369th medical battalion from 1943 to 1946, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Service Medal and the Bronze Star.

Mr. Hastings was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, where he was trustee, and a member of the tape ministry. He was also a member of the Walton Veterans Club, a member and former treasurer of the Walton Senior Citizens group.

He was a truck driver employed by the Delaware County Highway Department, superintendent of buildings and grounds at BOCES, and later a bus driver for the Delaware County ARC.

He is survived by his wife, Helen C. Hastings; one daughter, Linda and Jerold Bastedo of Hamburg; one son, William J. and Kathy Hastings of Hudson Falls; two grandsons, Michael and Julie Bastedo, and Jason Hastings; two granddaughters, Mary and Greg Rowe, and Meredith Hastings; and two nieces.

He was predeceased by his sister, Ellen Hoit.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003, in the First United Methodist Church, Walton, with the Rev. Peggy Fabrizio officiating.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Charlie's memory may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Walton, the Catskill Area Hospice, the Walton Emergency Squad or a charity of one's choice. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home in Walton.

Evelyn Von Amelunxen

UNADILLA — Evelyn Von Amelunxen, 96, known as "Miss Evvie" to locals, and who called herself "A Dilly from Unadilla," passed away after a brief illness Thursday, April 24, 2003, at her home.

She was born April 28, 1906, in Queens, the daughter of Emma and Charles Kopf.

She married Albert Von Amelunxen. He was the supervisor of the town of Oyster Bay Beaches. Mr. Von Amelunxen predeceased her in 1982.

Miss Evvie was a retired grade-school teacher from Queens. She still had students who would write to her and send her Christmas gifts.

She was a longtime secretary and treasurer of the Massapequa Republican Club.

She was a member of the League of Women Voters, a longtime supporter of the Humane Society and the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association.

She attributed her long life to "proper nutrition, lots of vitamins, exercise and a whole lot of luck."

Miss Evvie is survived by her brother, Charles Kopf; stepdaughter, Claire Hemsley; nieces, Judy McKenna, Susan Robertson and Lisa Kopf; a nephew, Keven Kopf; four grandnephews; eight grandnieces; one great-grandniece, one great-grandnephew; and her companion "Mackenzie."

She was predeceased by her sister, Marion Paul.

Services will be held on Long Island, with burial at the Calverton Cemetery in Calverton on Long Island.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in memory of Evelyn Von Amelunxen to the Peace Plantation.

Local arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home.

Florence Hubbs

WALTON — Florence Hubbs, 83, of Stirling, N.J., passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2003, in the Berkeley Heights Convalescent Center, Berkeley Heights, N.J., after a short illness.

Mrs. Hubbs was born in Walton, the daughter of Augustus and Minnie Steel Miller on Jan. 13, 1920.

She married Charles H. Hubbs. He died in 1958.

She was a graduate of Walton schools and later went to St. Lukes Nursing School in Newark, N.J.

Mrs. Hubbs was a homemaker, who found joy in taking care of her family. While living in New Jersey, she became politically involved, and worked to improve people's lives.

She is survived by two sons, Martin and Judy Hubbs of Stirling, N.J. and Michael and Debbie Hubbs of Oneonta; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two children, Charles Hubbs and Tolanda Wilgus.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, April 29, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St. in Walton, where services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Suzanne L. Cole, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, Walton, officiating. Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Walton Central School Dollars for Scholars. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Shirley C. Fowler

OCALA, Fla. — Shirley C. Fowler, 83, formerly of Cooperstown, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, under Hospice care in Ocala, Fla., as a result of chronic pulmonary disease.

She was born on Sept. 9, 1919, in Cooperstown, a daughter of Frank C. and F. Beulah (Adams) Carpenter.

She married John Gordon Fowler on Oct. 11, 1941, in Cooperstown. Mr. Fowler died on Nov. 2, 1995.

Mrs. Fowler grew up in Cooperstown, where she graduated from high school with the Class of 1937. She then attended the Knox School in Cooperstown, the Chicago Art Institute, and Packard Business School in New York City.

For many years Mrs. Fowler served as a supervisor with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at the county office building in Cooperstown. Following her retirement she served as librarian in the Cooperstown Village Library for a short time.

Mrs. Fowler and her husband moved to Florida in 1976, and for several years she represented Coldwell Banker as a real estate agent.

She was a member of the Silver Springs Shores Presbyterian Church in Ocala.

Mrs. Fowler is survived by two daughters, Joan Cary and her husband, Richard, of Chesapeake, Va., and Louise Kennedy and her husband, Tom, of Palm Coast, Fla.; three grandchildren, Martin Hennelly, Anne Luckett and Deborah Chamberlain; two great-granddaughters, Amanda and Nikki; a sister, Mrs. Alton G. (Nancy) Dunn Jr. of Cooperstown; a brother, E. Edwin Carpenter of Dunedin, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held locally in the fall at a time and date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Harvey Cline Jr.

MILFORD — Mr. Harvey (Pete) R. Cline Jr., 73, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Sept. 15, 1929, the son of Harvey Sr. and Lydia (Miller) Cline.

On Feb. 19, 1955, he married Joan Buddle. She predeceased him on April 2, 1986. In the fall of 1986, he married Ruth Van Loan. She predeceased him March 17, 1999.

He was a Korean War veteran. He worked on various farm jobs for many years before working at the Lakefront Motel as a groundskeeper. He also worked for the town of Springfield Highway Department. He loved to be with his family. He also enjoyed hunting and especially fishing.

Survivors include his companion, Joyce Weaver of Milford; daughter, Faith Chase, and her companion, Robert Baker, of Hartwick; son, Russell Cline and his companion, Sandra Roberts, of Middlefield; stepmother, Roxy Cline of Edmeston; sisters, Jeanette Benjamin and her husband, Donald, of Burlington Green and Leona Utter and her husband, David, of Oneonta; a brother, Lyle, and his wife, Jeanne, of Oxford; grandsons, Steven Chase and his wife, Christine, of Edmeston, Peter Chase and his wife, Alicia, of Toddsville, Jared Cline of Hertford, N.C., and Christopher Baker of Liberty; granddaughters, Deborah Sprague of Laurens, Chris Cline of Hertford, N.C., Kelly Baker of Roscoe, Heather Slater and her companion, Kevin Stickles, of Fly Creek and Heidi Sellick of Oneonta; great-grandchildren, Nathan and Ronald Tippet, Dakota and Shayne Chase, Joseph, Sabrina and Jeremiah Sprague, McKayla and McKenzie Slater and Kyle Stickles; stepchildren, Dorothy Holbrook and her husband, Andy, and their three children of Port Henry, Richard Fuller of Long Island and Jeffrey and Brenda Fuller and their four children of Decatur; a very special longtime friend, Lee Preston and his wife, Bessie; many nieces and nephews; and his faithful companions, Bones (dog) and Smoke (bird).

He was predeceased by his father and a sister, Agnes Rogers.

An 11 a.m. calling hour will precede the funeral.

Funeral services will be held at noon today, April 28, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lavern Saxer officiating. Burial will follow in the Fly Creek Cemetery, Fly Creek.

A reception will be held at the Hartwick Seminary Fire Station following the services.

Contributions may be made to the Milford Emergency Squad or the Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Clara C. Roe

EAST WORCESTER — Mrs. Clara C. Roe, 78, of East Worcester, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2003, in Oneonta.

She was born July 3, 1924, in Decatur, the daughter of Levi and Elsa (Clapper) Crandell. She was one of 10 children.

She married Chriss Roe on Feb. 6, 1944. He predeceased her April 24, 1993.

Survivors include, a son, Alton C. and wife, Coral, Roe of Stamford; a daughter, Sandra Kruglak of Cobleskill; a son, Harley and wife, Jackie, Schrom of Selkirk; five grandchildren, Christy and Kyle Marshall of Richmondville, William and Nancy Kruglak of Cobleskill, Doreen and Gary Hotaling of Argusville, Beth Perry of Stamford and Michael Kruglak of Cobleskill; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, John and Rosalie Crandell of Wichita, Kan., and Kenneth and Georgiana Crandell of Flitch, Texas; three sisters, Lucy Allen of Cobleskill, Frances Turton of Cohoes, and Sally and George Knapp of Oneonta; a sister-in-law, Margie Crandell of Otego; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by an infant son, Albert C. Roe; two brothers, Howard and Charles; and two sisters, Doris and Anna.

She was a farmer's wife, and also at one time was the assistant postmaster at the United States Post Office in Charlotteville.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the East Worcester Fire Department, or the East Worcester First Responders, P.O. Box 781, East Worcester, N.Y. 12064.

Arrangements are the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.
