Dorothy Mae Barrett

CONWAY, S.C. — Dorothy Mae Barrett, 71, of Dongola Highway, passed away on Friday morning, April 25, 2003.

She was born on Aug. 13, 1931, in Cobleskill, N.Y., daughter of the late Myron J. and Anna Dorothy Mead.

For many years Mrs. Barrett was a self-employed hairdresser.

Surviving are her husband, Paul Charles Barrett; one daughter, Donna Harrelson of Bat Cave, N.C.; three sisters and their husbands, Clara and Hal Smith of West Winfield, N.Y., Anna Mae and Ray Massey of Bridgewater, and Janet and Bob Wittko of Ash, N.C.; three grandchildren, Nichelle Barton, Shaine Wilcox and Jarad Wilcox; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, N.Y. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m.

Mrs. Barrett will be laid to rest in Saint Joseph's Cemetery on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

Francis Burnett

JEFFERSON — Francis Burnett, 86, formerly of Jefferson, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

He was born Nov. 22, 1916, in Jefferson, the son of LeRoy and Viola (Fancher) Burnett.

He married Elsa Harris in 1976, and she predeceased him.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Burnett spent his life in the Jefferson area and was a self-employed carpenter there.

Survivors include a sister, Winifred Burnett of Albany; a sister-in-law, Gertrude Burnett of Jefferson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Five brothers, Maurice, James, Lynn, Wayne and Ellis, predeceased him.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, May 3, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Jefferson Methodist Church, Jefferson, with Pastor Frank Adams officiating. Burial will follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Veda A. Walley

AFTON — Graveside services for Veda Arletta Walley, 82, of Afton, and formerly of Franklin, who passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, in Johnson City, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003, in Glenwood Cemetery in Afton.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Barbara Collatz

SIDNEY — Barbara Collatz, 99, a resident at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home and formerly of Sunset Avenue, Sidney, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2003, in Oneonta.

She was born May 16, 1903, in Germany, the daughter of the late George and Christine Stiles Link.

On March 30, 1929, she married George Collatz in Brooklyn. He predeceased her on May 5, 1981. Mr. and Mrs. Collatz operated a chicken farm in Laurens for several years.

She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Oneonta.

She is survived by her cousin, Arthur Schlenker of Wappingers Falls, and several nieces and cousins in Germany.

Arrangements were under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney.

Marion Slocum Smith

HADLEY — A memorial service for Marion Slocum Smith (nee Cole) who passed away Jan. 4, 2003, will be held at 11 a.m. on June 14, 2003, at Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley; not on April 25, 2003, as previously announced. Burial will follow in the Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.

Helen M. Cankar

FLY CREEK — Mrs. Helen M. Cankar, 72, of Cemetery Road in Fly Creek died early Tuesday morning, April 29, 2003, at her daughter Carol's home in Hartwick.

Helen was born on Dec. 6, 1930, on Hinkley Hill Road in the town of Cherry Valley, a daughter of Max Gorney and Mary Frances (Peplinski) Gorney Wichowsky.

She was first married to Richard P. (Dixie) O'Brien Sr. She later married Anton A. Cankar Jr. on Oct. 30, 1950, in Hamilton. Mr. Cankar died on May 3, 1969.

Raised in Lentsville, Helen attended the Lentsville Rural School. She then attended Cooperstown High School but left school to help on the family farm.

Her first paying job was painting Easter eggs at JJ Newberry's on Main Street in Cooperstown. Throughout the years she was employed as a waitress and cook at Doubleday Restaurant, Clancy's Deli, the Fly Creek Hotel, Biaggio's, the Cooperstown Veterans Club and, most recently, the Fly Creek General Store.

She was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 Women's Auxiliary and was a former member of the Fly Creek Fire Department Women's Auxiliary.

She was an avid NASCAR fan, and she enjoyed collecting cookie jars and gravy boats.

Helen is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Carol L. Boulay and her husband, Roger of Hartwick and Mrs. Joanne K. Tarbox of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sons, Richard P. O'Brien Jr. of Hartwick, and John K. Cankar of Cooperstown; nine grandchildren, Sasha M., Amber J., and Austin G. Boulay, Chris and Mike Tarbox, and Megan, Bobbie, Patrick and Katie O'Brien; three sisters, Betty Koshar and her husband, Edward of Fly Creek, Josephine Bliss of Cooperstown and Dorothy Ricco of Las Flores, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Anton J. Cankar, a son-in-law, John C. (Jack) Tarbox and four halfbrothers, Edward, Leo, Henry and Alfred Gorney.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with Fr. John R. Roos, Pastor Emeritus of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

The committal service and burial will follow in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2003, when Helen's family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Jane Nevil Tennant

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Jane Nevil Tennant, 88, of Cooperstown, died Monday afternoon, April 28, 2003, at The Meadows.

She was born on March 5, 1915, in Montoursville, Pa., a daughter of Harry J. and Gladys K. (Romig) Nevil.

On Sept. 11, 1939, she married Robert Clermonte Tennant in the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown. Mr. Tennant died on Dec. 15, 1972.

Raised in Cooperstown, Jane graduated from Cooperstown High School with the Class of 1933, and then attended the Knox School for Girls in Cooperstown, graduating from there in 1935.

She was first employed as a secretary for the Cooperstown school system and then at the First National Bank of Cooperstown.

Following her marriage in 1939, she devoted her life to raising her family and caring for their home. In later years, after her husband's death, she was employed at Lippitt Jewelry and Gifts in Cooperstown.

A charter member of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 Women's Auxiliary in Cooperstown, she was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown and the Cooperstown Women's Club.

Jane is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Catharine ("Katie") Sanford and her husband, David A. Sanford, of Cooperstown, and Mrs. Susan Garvin and her husband, James W. Garvin Jr., of Fly Creek; two granddaughters, Susan S. Novak of Worcester, Mass., and Megan A. Sanford of Brooklyn; one great-granddaughter, Alexis Novak; one brother, Harry J. Nevil Jr. of Fly Creek; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Ann Nevil of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Mrs. Catharine N. Lippitt, and her brother, Jack R. Nevil.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2003, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with Mr. Richard Sliter, pastor of the Aldrich Baptist Church in North Franklin, officiating.

Burial in Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts, may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or the Activities Fund, care of The Meadows, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Walter H. DuMond

OXFORD — Walter H. DuMond, 70, of 119 DuMond Road, Oxford, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Binghamton General Hospital.

He was born on Aug. 13, 1932, in Franklin, the son of the late Glenn and Shirley DuMond.

On March 12, 1953, he married Myrna Williams, in Cincinnatus. She survives.

Besides his wife, Myrna; he is survived by his children, Debra and Joseph Hurlburt of Guilford, Robin DuMond of Oxford, Steven and Shelly DuMond of Guilford, and James and Jackie DuMond of Oxford; his grandchildren, Chris Hurlburt, Todd Hurlburt, Jessup DuMond, Dustin DuMond, Derrek DuMond, Leah DuMond, Cassie DuMond, Jackie DuMond, Harley DuMond and Jimmy DuMond; and his great-grandchildren, Holly Hurlburt, Shane DuMond and Cody Hurlburt. Several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Walt retired as a toolmaker at Amphenol Corp. in Sidney. He was a member of the IAM Union in Sidney and a member of the board of the Credit Union. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

An avid hunter, fisherman and trapper, he was a member of the Rod & Gun Club, the Trappers Association and the National Rifle Association.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 2, 2003, at 8 p.m. at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford, with the Rev. Allen C. Lang, pastor of the United Church of Oxford, officiating.

Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford, on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oxford Emergency Squad.

Charles Wolcott Boynton

BAYONET POINT, Fla. — Charles Wolcott Boynton, 84, of Bayonet Point, Fla., died Friday, April 25, 2003.

Born in New York City June 13, 1918, to Howard and Millie (Schonberg) Boynton, he grew up in West Orange, N.J., and graduated from Pace Institute (now Pace University).

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

In May 1944, he married Ruth (Offord) of Columbus, Ohio; they lived in Wethersfield, Conn., for 35 years.

Mr. Boynton owned and served as president of Baldwin Industries in East Hampton, Conn.

From childhood he spent time during the summer in Stamford, N.Y.; after retiring, he and his wife resided there and in Bayonet Point.

Mr. Boynton was a former member of the Stamford Golf Club and the Beacon Woods Golf Club.

Mr. Boynton is survived by his wife, Ruth; three daughters, Nancy Boynton and Robert Lange of Simsbury, Conn., Deborah Boynton and John Stephenson of Farmington, Conn., and Patricia and Gary Meunier of Madison, Conn.; one son, Daniel and Vanessa Boynton of Tinconning, Mich.; three grandchildren, Bethany (Boynton) Middleton of Burton, Mich., Amanda (Boynton) McDonald of Lehigh Acres, Fla., and Colin Meunier of Madison, Conn.; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Boynton was predeceased by three brothers and one sister, Robert Boynton, Jean Mackay, William Boynton and John Boynton.

Memorial donations may be sent to Hernando-Pasco Hospice, 12107 Majestic Boulevard., Hudson, FL 34667-2460.

Bertha F. Dunwald

ONEONTA — Bertha F. Dunwald, 80, of Oneonta passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born July 19, 1922, in Jamaica, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Paliwoda.

She married Edward Dunwald in 1941. He predeceased her in 1969.

Bertha was an avid Yankee fan. She also enjoyed gardening, and took great pleasure in her birds.

She is survived by her children, Barbara Kopp of Edmeston, Edward Dunwald and Patti Hoelle of Reidsville, N.C., Dolores Weiser of Washington Township, N.J., Jo-Anne Naujeck of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Ronald Dunwald of Oneonta, Kenneth and Gloria Dunwald of Oakland, N.J., and David Dunwald of Otego; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Elenore Matuziewicz of Hicksville, along with several nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate her life will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Thomas Kenney Sr.

EAST MEADOW, Long Island — Thomas J. Kenney Sr., of Leisure Village, Ridge, Long Island, passed away April 28, 2003. He was formerly of East Meadow, Long Island and had lived in Stamford.

He was the beloved husband of Helene A. (nee McCauley). The loving father of Maureen Kowalski, Colleen Savas and her husband, William; Thomas Jr. and his wife, Kelly; Doreen Bacile and her husband, Frank; Timothy and his wife, Sandra; Terrence and his wife, Debra; Patrick T.; Kathleen Bortell and her husband, Keith; the grandfather of Michele, William Jr., Tricia, Tina, Peter, Brendan, Shannon, Matthew, Lindsay, Ryann, Taylor, Erin, Jenifer and Emily, who he cherished; and he was great-grandfather of Samantha, who he adored.

Mr. Kenney proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was retired from the Long Island State Parkway Police.

Reposing at O.B. Davis Funeral Homes, 1001 Route 25A, Miller Place, Long Island. Visitation Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mark's R.C., Church, Shoreham, Long Island. Interment Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton.

Janette Howland

WALTON — Janette Howland of Walton a retired school teacher, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at Park Terrace Adult Home in Walton. She was 107 years old.

Miss Howland was born Feb. 21, 1896, in Walton, to Ray and Anna McLaury Howland.

She graduated from high school and earned her teaching certificate at normal school. She was a teacher in country schools then at a girls school in India for 23 years. When she returned to the United States, she taught at the Verona-Sherrill School District in Vernon until her retirement, when she returned to her home on East Brook, Walton.

Miss Howland was a member of the New York State Retired Teacher's Association and the United Presbyterian Church, Walton.

She spent many hours reading her Bible, liked to have company, and enjoyed cats.

She is survived by several cousins.

She is predeceased by a sister, Agnes Howland, who died in 2001, at the age of 103; and a brother, Ward, who died in 1985.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2003, at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware Streets, Walton, with the Rev. Scott Wilkinson officiating.

The interment in Walton Cemetery will be private.

There are no prior calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Walton Emergency Squad, 63 West St., Walton or Walton Booster Club (for the More Park Christmas Star), 235 Palmer Hill, Walton, in the name of Janette Howland would be appreciated.

Mark R. Stilwell

LAKE WORTH, Fla. — Friends are invited to join the family for a graveside service for Mark R. Stilwell, 41, formerly of Worcester, who passed away, April 1, 2003, in Lake Worth, Fla. Services will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester on Saturday, May 3, 2003, at 12:30 p.m., with the Rev. Jane K. Pykus, pastor of the Worcester United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co. in Worcester.

John (Jack) C. Whiteman

CHERRY VALLEY — Committal services for Mr. John (Jack) C. Whiteman, who passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at The Meadows, Cooperstown, will be held on Friday, May 2, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the Middlefield Cemetery, Middlefield. Burial will follow.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.

Anna Way

SCHENEVUS — A graveside service for Anna Way, 92, who passed away March 7, 2003, will be held Saturday, May 3, 2003, at 10 a.m., at the Maryland Cemetery, with the Rev. Thomas Snyder, pastor of the Schenevus United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.

Mildred M. Sayko

NORWICH — Memorial services for Mildred M. Sayko (Millie) of Norwich, who passed away April 3, 2003, will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2003, at 11 a.m. from the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Norwich, with the Rev. Glenn Mahaffey, Rector officiating.

Arrangements are with the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home in Norwich.
