Richard W. Nutt

EDMESTON — Richard W. Nutt, 88, of Edmeston died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at his home with his family by his side.

He was born Dec. 15, 1914, in Ava, the son of Delmar and Agnes L. (Kohl) Nutt.

He married Arlene A. Wilkinson on May 18, 1944, at home in Edmeston. Arlene predeceased him on March 6, 1998.

Richard was a decorated veteran serving in the U.S. Army during World War II in both North Africa and the European Theater.

He was a member of the DAV, VFW and the American Legion Post No. 1311.

Richard was and avid bee keeper, bringing to his grandchildren fresh honey right from the hive. He was a friend to all.

In his later years, before his sight failed him, he would drive about town visiting many who were shut in, or in need of good company.

Richard is survived by his six sons and their spouses, John and Karen Nutt of West Exeter, Richard Nutt Jr., of Edmeston, Stevon and Brenda Nutt of West Exeter, Owen and Cindy Nutt of Leonardsville, Timothy and Jeanette Nutt of Burlington Flats, and Arleigh Nutt of Edmeston; his daughter and her husband, Diane and Ken Andela of Cassville; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his sister, Frances Snyder of Leonardsville.

He was predeceased by his wife, his brother and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Burlington Flats, Pastor Jay Henderson officiating. Interment will follow at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Calling hours are Saturday, May 3, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Margaret B. Cheesbro

PENFIELD — Margaret B. Cheesbro, 94, of Penfield, and formerly of Bainbridge, entered into rest on Saturday, April 26, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.

She was born July 3, 1908, in Holland Patent, the daughter of the late George and Clara Evans Blust. Margaret was the eldest of eight children.

On Nov. 27, 1935, she married Henry J. Cheesbro, in Oxford. He predeceased her on Dec. 30, 1988.

Margaret taught junior high math for 40 years at the Bainbridge-Guilford Central School.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Bainbridge, for over 50 years. She relocated to Penfield, from Bainbridge in 1996.

She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Nancy Williams, New Hartford, and Sally and Gary Printy, Rochester; six grandchildren, Jacqueline Williams-Lifka and Robert, Harrisonburg, Va., Yvette Cummings and Noel, Macedon, R. Todd Gregoire and Carolyn, Macedon, Mark Gregoire and Tina, Penfield, Barry Gregoire and Denise, Macedon, and Nicole Crosby, Newark; two sisters and brothers-in-law Edith and Orval Hughes, Albuquerque, N.M., and Jean and Fred Ruffrage, Barneveld; 10 great-grandchildren, Jason, Tracy, Shannon, Tiffany, ElleMartel, Jamie, Nathaniel, Remy, Christopher and Autumn; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3 from the First Presbyterian Church, Bainbridge, with the Rev. Katherine Evans, pastor officiating. Burial will be held in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Friends are invited to call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 2, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Bainbridge-Guilford Alumni Association, the Bainbridge Emergency Squad or to the Genesee Regional Home Care Association-Hospice Program.

John W. Gill

GILBERTSVILLE — John W. (Jack) Gill, died Thursday morning, at his home here. He was 83.

Born in Bristol, Pa., on June 11, 1919, Jack was a retired newspaper man. He moved to Gilbertsville from New Jersey in 1988. He was a reporter and editor for a number of publications, including the Baltimore Sun, the Courier-News of Bridgewater (N.J.), the Asbury Park (N.J.) Press, the Trenton (N.J.) Times and the Delaware Valley Advance in Bucks County, Pa. He attended the University of Pennsylvania.

Jack was a collector of books and other writings by H.L. Mencken and an avid baseball fan.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Wolfe Gill; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Judy Wolfe of Temple, N.H.; three nieces, Amy Moshonas of Mill Valley, Calif., Erin Wolfe of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Barbara Miller of Levittown, Pa., and a nephew, David Wolfe of Austin, Texas.

Cremation arrangements are being made by the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris. There will be no calling hours or services. Donations in his name may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Robert W. Woodrow

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside committal service for Robert W. Woodrow, 92, who died on Dec. 21, 2002, will be held on Saturday, 2 p.m. in Butternut Valley Cemetery, Garrattsville, with the Rev. William Harkins, pastor of Church of Christ Uniting officiating.

James Lenhard

RICHFIELD — A graveside committal service for James Lenhard, 44, who died on Feb. 26, 2003, will be held on Monday, 1:30 p.m. in the St. Joseph's Cemetery. Sister Patricia Woolheater will officiate.

Barbara Kilpatrick

CANASTOTA — Barbara D. Kilpatrick, 77, of 109 Belleview Drive, died Thursday, May 1, 2003, at University Hospital in Syracuse following a brief illness.

She was born on Oct. 17, 1925, in Sherrill, the daughter of Andrew and Marion Duncan Dick.

Barb spent her early years in Sherrill, graduating from Sherrill High School. She also graduated from Amsterdam City Hospital of Nursing in 1947 and Syracuse University with a bachelor's degree in public health in 1965.

She was a past member of the Delta Kappa Gamma — Sigma Chapter. Barb was also a member of the Sound of Silver Sweet Adalines Inc.; an active member of the YMCA in Oneida and she also enjoyed golf and tole painting.

She worked as a registered nurse for Oneida City Hospital for two years, a nurse teacher for the Canastota School District for 10 years and the Oneida School District for eight years retiring in 1980.

Barb had lived in Canastota since 1961.

She was a past warden and lay leader with Trinity Episcopal Church in Canastota.

Barb married Edward C. Kilpatrick on July 1, 1961, in Sherrill.

Surviving besides her husband are two sisters-in-law, Shirley Duncan of Sherrill and Evelyn Duncan of Syracuse, as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, John, Andrew and James Duncan and one sister, Elizabeth Duncan Hummel.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home Inc., 201 James St., Canastota.

A memorial service will be held at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, May 11, at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Fayetteville with the Rev. William C. Redfield officiating.

Burial will be private.

In her memory, contributions may be made to the Greater Lenox Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 382, Canastota, NY 13032, with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Alice Bird Short

ONEONTA — Alice Bird Short, 84, died peacefully at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Thursday May 1, 2003.

She was born Sept. 6, 1918, in Fair Haven, Vt., to Michael and Therese (Burke) Bird.

She moved to Queens in 1936, and later married Jerry H. Short, who predeceased her in 1966.

She is survived by her children and grandchildren, Margaret Maguire and Patrick Maguire of Oneonta, Theresa Strottman, Nissa Strottman, Joan Gruen, Patricia Burke, Meghan Burke, James Burke, Mary Short and Albert Short.

Calling hours and funeral services will be held in Little Neck, N.Y.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 330 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820, c/o the Resident Council Fund.

Robert J. Mayer Sr.

COOPERSTOWN — Robert J. Mayer Sr., 81, died Friday, May 2, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Patchogue, the son of Joseph and Elsie (Newman) Mayer.

He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Marie Rosina.

Mr. Mayer was a United States Air Force Veteran serving in World War II.

He was the proprietor of Mayer's Greenhouses in Patchogue.

Survivors include a son, Robert J. Mayer Jr.; two daughters, Marie and Joe Zaffuto and Lynda and Steve Strenck; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester, with the Rev. Jeffrey L'Arche as celebrant.

Arrangements are being handled by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Helen E. Breen

RICHMONDVILLE — Mrs. Helen E. Breen, 86, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at her home.

She was born Nov. 23, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Theron E. and Amelia (Roeser) Bingham. On June 29, 1940, she married Peter J. Breen Jr., in Brooklyn. He survives.

Helen was a homemaker and avid gardener.

Survivors, besides her husband, Peter Breen, of Richmondville, include a son, Michael J., and his wife, Priscilla R. Breen, of Goodyear Lake; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Peter J. Breen, on Sept. 8, 1993.

A memorial service will be held in Milford Center Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in Mrs. Breen's memory may be made to the St. Joseph Rehab Center, P.O. Box 470, Saranac Lake, NY 12983 or the Richmondville Volunteer Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 11, Richmondville, NY 12149.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Mary S. Butts

ONEONTA — Graveside memorial services for Mary S. Butts, 90, of Oneonta, who died on Jan. 13, 2003, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, at the Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

After the service the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. at Christopher's Restaurant in Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

John I. Smith Jr.

DELHI — John I. (Jack) Smith Jr., a lifelong Delhi resident and businessman, died Friday, May 2, 2003, at his longtime family residence. He was 80 years old.

He was born Aug. 3, 1922, in Delhi, the son of John I. and Mabel Seward Smith.

He married Evelyn VanZandt on May 2, 1950, in New York City.

Jack was a graduate of Delaware Academy and Bowman Technical Institute in Lancaster, Pa., where he earned a degree in watchmaking. He also attended Syracuse University prior to serving with both the Army Air Corps and Army Medical Corps in Europe and the Pacific during World War II.

His involvement with the Delhi business community was nearly lifelong. His father founded Smith's Jewelry Store in 1921, and Jack and his brother, David, grew up working at the store. Watch repairs, antique watches and estate jewelry were his specialty, and Jack became recognized as one of the area's most respected jewelry expert.

He semi-retired in 1987, but continued to be actively involved in business, operating his own jewelry store in Delhi until 2002. That same year, the Greater Delhi Area Chamber of Commerce honored Jack with its Business of the Year Award.

Jack was active in public service. He was one of the original members of the Delhi Village Planning Board, a town of Delhi councilman, chairman of the Delhi Republican Committee, trustee of the Hanford Mills Museum, lifetime member of the Donald W. Gleason American Legion post and Delhi Masonic Lodge, member of the Delhi Fire Department and a member of the Woodland Cemetery Board.

Survivors include his wife, Van; son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Marilyn Smith of Delhi; sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Robert Lee of Lewiston; sisters-in-law, Ann Smith of Delhi and Virginia Wagner of Roseville, Calif.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jack and Alice Kamm of Albuquerque, N.M.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

His parents and brother predeceased him.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jack Smith is planned for 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at the United Ministry Church in Delhi, with the Rev. Lisa Heckman officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in the name of Jack Smith may be made to the Delhi Fire Department Emergency Squad; the Dorothy Green Dialysis Fund, care of The Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown; or the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Carl V. O'Hara

OTEGO — Carl V. O'Hara, 68, of Otego, passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2003, at the Bassett Health Care Center in Cooperstown.

He was born Sept. 28, 1934, in Otego, the son of James H. and Ellen V. (Kelly) O'Hara.

He married Carol Fulton on July 24, 1965, in Centerport on Long Island.

Carl, and his brother Vincent owned and operated Shannon Knolls Dairy Farms located on Route 7 and Briar Creek Road in Otego.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Carol O'Hara, of Otego; his children and their spouses, Brennan and Stephanie O'Hara of Boston, Mass., Marne and Robert Malloy of Manchester, Mass., Courtenay and Ed Hill of Tampa, Fla., and Shane and Joanne O'Hara of Boston, Mass.; his grandchildren, Bryn and Ronan O'Hara, Hayley and Caitlin Malloy, and Carly Hill; his brothers, James O'Hara of Huntsville, Ala., and Ambrose and Richard O'Hara of Otego; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Vincent, Thomas, Patrick, and John O'Hara.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. John P. Rosson, pastor of Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church, Cooperstown, officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad, Otego, N.Y. 13825, or the Bassett Heart Care Campaign, 1 Atwell Road Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Pauline G. Bodden

SCOTIA — Pauline G. Bodden, 77, of Vley Road, formerly of Milford, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at Ellis Hospital.

Pauline was born Jan. 15, 1926, in New York City, the daughter of Lawrence and Anna Kaufman Glass, and had been an area resident the past 10 years, moving from Tucson, Ariz.

She received master's and a bachelor's degrees from the State University College at Oneonta. Pauline was a graduate of Milford High School and spent much of her life in Otsego County.

She was a former teacher at Milford Central and was a high school English teacher at Suffern High School for 17 years, retiring in 1985.

She was a member of the American Association of University Women and the New York State Retired Teachers Association.

She was an avid reader, and was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas R. Bodden of Glenville, and Daniel J. Bodden of Las Vegas; two daughters, Faith A. Bodden of Scotia, and Marjorie L. O'Dell of Cape Coral, Fla.; one brother, Alexander Glass of London, England, and Berkeley, Calif.; a sister, Naomi Glass of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two nieces; one nephew; an aunt, Mindy Fierson of Oneonta; and a cousin, Miriam Vedder of Laurens.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas R. Bodden, who died in 2001.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial services for the celebration of her life will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at the First Reformed Church, 224 N. Ballston Ave., Scotia.

Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements are being handled by the White Funeral Home, Scotia.
