Florence I. Douglas

PITTSFIELD — Florence Ida Douglas of Pittsfield died on May 2, 2003, in Cooperstown.

She was the daughter of Alfred S. Burton and Alice Simmons.

Her childhood was spent in the Pittsfield and New Berlin area and she was a graduate of New Berlin Central School.

She married Arthur L. Douglas.

She worked for the Kraft Food Co. in South Edmeston for 35 years.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her children, Arthur S. Douglas of South Carolina, Donna L. Pickens of Otego, John S. Douglas of South Carolina, and Teresa A. Douglas of Brookfield; her grandchildren, Renee McGarrity, Deanna Douglas, Michael McGarrity, Chad Douglas, Andrea Douglas, Amber Douglas; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Douglas will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin, with the Rev. Charles Taylor of Saint Andrews Episcopal Church in New Berlin.

Funeral arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Stephen John Bartl

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside committal service with military honors for Stephen John Bartl, 53, who passed away on Jan. 23, 2003, will be held Saturday, May 10, 2003, at 2:30 p.m. in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Richfield Springs. Sister Patricia Woolheater will officiate.

He was the beloved husband of Debra Bartl.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Rodney A. Davis

COOPERSTOWN — A committal service and burial with New York State Police honors for Rodney A. Davis, 62, of Cooperstown, who died Feb. 9, 2003, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2003, in Lakewood Cemetery, with the Rev. M. Lynn Snyder, pastor of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Rose Edick

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside committal service for Rose Edick, 79, who passed away on Jan. 7, 2003, will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Richfield Springs. Sister Patricia Woolheater will officiate.

COLUMBIA — A graveside committal service for Grace May Skinner, 93, who passed away on Jan. 13, 2003, will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. in the Reformed Church Cemetery, town of Columbia. Sister Patricia Woolheater will officiate.

Olga Swota

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside committal service for Olga Swota, 89, who passed away on Jan. 7, 2003, will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2003, at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Richfield Springs. Sister Patricia Woolheater will officiate.

She was the beloved wife of Steven Swota.

Lynne Margaret Tucker Hoffman

ONEONTA — Lynne Margaret Tucker Hoffman died peacefully in the loving home of her cousins, Gay and Doug Kelsey, and surrounded by her family on Monday, May 5, 2003.

She was born on Sept. 5, 1942, in Staten Island, the eldest daughter of Margery and John Tucker.

She first came to Oneonta as a college student where she met her future husband, Earl William (Butch) Hoffman, a longtime Oneonta resident. They married in 1965.

After studies in Baltimore, Md., they returned to Oneonta, where they remained for the rest of their lives, raising their two beloved daughters, Shannon Lynne Hoffman and Jacquelyn Jennifer Hoffman, currently of Guilderland.

Lynne and Butch treasured life in Oneonta, where their children could thrive and their lives were filled with lasting friendships.

Lynne was widowed in 1992.

In addition to her daughters, Lynne is survived by her mother, Margery Ryan Tucker of Melbourne, Fla.; and her younger sister, Joan Tucker Holowaty of McLean, Va.

Lynne was a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Maryland and received her master's degree from John Hopkins University. She had a distinguished career in the Charlotte Valley School system from which she retired in 2001.

During her illness she was comforted by the many letters she received from former students who expressed their untold gratitude to Lynne for filling their lives with such joy. Although her professional accomplishments were numerous, her students are her most lasting legacy.

Lynne was an avid quilter, recently forming her business, Creations by Lynne. In her memory her many friends are using her materials to make memorial quilts for her two daughters. These will be treasured family heirlooms.

One of Lynne's former students wrote that "Charlotte Valley will never forget the loving smile, caring attitude, gentle touch and heartfelt generosity that came from Room 200." This sentiment is shared by all of Lynne's friends. Her optimism and goodness are forever embedded in the hearts of everyone that knew her.

A scholarship fund has been established in Lynne's honor. Lynne requested that the scholarship be offered to students of Charlotte Valley pursuing a degree program. The address is the Lynne Hoffman Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Solomon Smith Barney, 493 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Lynne's family was given unconditional and invaluable support by hospice during her illness. They request that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Scholarship Fund or the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, May 7, at Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home between 6 and 8 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Thursday, May 8, 2003, at 4 p.m.

A reception will follow the Mass at the St. Mary's Parish Center on Walnut Street in Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta.

James E. Hamilton Jr.

HARTWICK — James E. Hamilton Jr., 75, of Oneonta and formerly of Hartwick, died Sunday morning, May 4, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home in Oneonta.

He was born on April 30, 1928, in Warwick, the son of the late J. Emmett and Mary (Morgan) Hamilton.

He married Alice DiLello on April 28, 1994, in Laurens. She died Nov. 7, 2002.

An Otsego County resident since 1937, Jim was valedictorian of the Class of 1945, of the former Hartwick High School, and a United States Army Veteran of World War II.

He was employed by The Daily Star for over 20 years, retiring in 1990. In recent years he had written a weekly baseball column for the Star.

Jim was a life member and past adjutant of Oneonta American Legion Post No. 259; a member and past adjutant of Oneonta Squadron No. 259, Sons of the American Legion; life member of Oneonta Chapter No. 200, Disabled American Veterans; and a national member of the American Association of Retired Persons.

Jim is survived by four nieces, Mrs. Linda DeLong and her husband, Howard, and Mrs. Colleen Lent and her husband, Brian, all of Otego, Mrs. Midge Dean and her husband, James, of Sidney, and Mrs. Ramona Brown and her husband, Michael, of Utica. Also surviving are five grandnieces; four grandnephews; four great-grandnieces; two great-grandnephews; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Joan Asping of Sidney and Mary Richards of Oneonta; and several cousins.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Mary Simonds; an uncle, William D. Morgan; and a cousin, William M. Morgan.

A graveside military service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2003, in Hartwick Cemetery, with members of Oneonta American Legion Post No. 259, presiding.

There will be no calling hours.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Anna Sauer Minetti

STAMFORD — Anna Sauer Minetti entered into eternal rest on Sunday, May 4, 2003. She was 96. She died after a short illness at Robinson Terrace and now is in the arms of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Anna was born on June 27, 1906, in Sindeldorf, Germany, and was the youngest of nine children. Anna came to America at 20 years old, and married Armando Minetti Sr. in 1935, and raised three children in New York City.

Anna moved to Stamford in 1971, and lived in Township until she went into Robinson Terrace at 93. Anna was active in Senior Citizens and enjoyed life at the farm on the mountain.

She is survived by a son, Armando Jr., daughter, Maria Dianich and husband, Guerrino, daughter, Norma Dianich and husband, Silvio, all of Stamford; her grandchildren, Dorine Muller and her husband, Norman of South Kortright, Anthony Dianich of Stamford, Joe Dianich and his wife, Sharon, of Davenport, Michael and his wife, Regina Dianich, of Stamford, and Linda and her husband, Jose Rodriquez, of Connecticut; great-grandchildren are Thomas, Danny and Joey Rodriquez of Connecticut, Danielle, Eric and Melissa Muller of South Kortright, Luke, Ryan and Amber Dianich of Stamford, Faith Dianich of Stamford and Rebecca and Robert Dianich of Davenport; several great-great-grandchildren in Connecticut; and several nieces and nephews in Germany.

Anna was predeceased by her spouse.

Calling hours will take place on Wednesday May 7, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, on Thursday, May 8, 2003, at 11 a.m., with Father Anthony Ligato officiating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in Anna Minetti's memory may be made to Sacred Heart Church or Robinson Terrace Auxiliary Fund.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Hilda McKee

ANDES — Hilda Jenny Drew McKee, 92, of Andes passed away on March 20, 2003, at Meadows South Nursing Home in Louisville, Ky.

She was born June 27, 1910, in Arena, the daughter of Charles and Laura Drew.

She married Floyd Myron McKee on April 1, 1927.

She was a member of the Andes United Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Leonard and Maxine McKee of Fairdale Ky.; daughter-in-law, Eleanor McKee of Delhi; four grandchildren, Sarah Alice, Timmy, Russell and Douglas McKee; three great-grandchildren, Morgan, Ryan and Kylie McKee; an aunt, Dorothy Russell; sister-in-law, Marge Drew; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; and her son, Gilbert McKee.

Friends may call at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2003, where the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2003, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Daniel McCollister, pastor of the Andes United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial following in Andes Cemetery.

Memorials to the American Heart Association in Hilda McKee's memory are appreciated.

Marvola Edna Scott

MARYLAND — Marvola Edna Scott, 61, passed away, Sunday, May 4, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born May 11, 1941, in Gloversville, the daughter of Henry and Ruth (Alter) Ercanbrack. She was a graduate of the Gloversville High School.

Marvola was an experienced seamstress and at one time was employed by the Lee Dye Co. in Johnstown as a jet operator.

She and her husband moved to Maryland six years ago from Johnstown.

Survivors include, her husband, Herbert Scott, who she married in Johnstown 25 years ago; two daughters, BonnieJo Hammond of Maryland, and Tina Marie Scott of Rochester; a foster son, James VanGuilder of Mayfield; granddaughter, Kadi Mai Scott of Maryland; a great-granddaughter, Kali Scott of Maryland; two sisters, Katherine Kenyon and Elsie Ercanbrack; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, James Ercanbrack.

There will be an open house for friends and family on Sunday, May 11, 2003, at the Scott & Hammond Home, 7562 State Highway 7, Maryland.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Marguerite Sanford

MARGARETVILLE — Marguerite Sanford, 92, formerly of Margaretville, passed away May 4, 2003, at St. Lukes Hospital, New Hartford.

She was born Sept. 24, 1910, in Halcott Center, the daughter of Grover Cleveland Ballard and Anna B. Tompkins.

She was a graduate of Oneonta Normal School.

She married Paul Raymond Sanford on May 1, 1955. He died Nov. 4, 1969.

She was a former employee of the Margaretville Telephone Company, Margaretville.

Marguerite resided in Margaretville for many years then moved to Lake Worth, Texas, in the mid-1970s. Presently she was living at the Eastern Star Home in Oriskany, since Jan. 4, 1995.

Marguerite is survived by one nephew and his wife, Duane and Patricia Gillespie, Elizabethtown.

Private committal services will be held at the Halcott Center Cemetery, Halcott Center, under the direction of the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Barbara Hannigan

SCHENEVUS — Friends are invited to join the family at the graveside service for Barbara Hannigan, 85, who passed away, Jan. 17, 2003. The service will be held at noon Friday, May 9, 2003, at the Schenevus Cemetery, with the Rev. Rose Bellan, officiating.

Arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Julia LaPlant

HAGAMAN, Wis. — A graveside committal service for Julia LaPlant, who died on Feb. 12, 2003, will be held at noon Friday, in Springfield Center Cemetery, with the Rev. Wrightson Tongue, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Herkimer/Little Falls, officiating.

Kenneth N. Palmer

WESTFORD — Friends are invited to join the family at the graveside service for Kenneth N. Palmer, 60, who passed away, Dec. 16, 2002. The service will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2003, at the Westford Cemetery, with full military honors presented by the Schenevus VFW Post 2752.

Arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Howard B. Chase

UNADILLA — Howard B. Chase, 73, of Unadilla passed away unexpectedly Monday, May 5, 2003, at his home.

He was born on Jan. 30, 1930, in Erie, Pa., the son of the late Arthur F. and Elizabeth M. (Joralemon) Chase. When he was a month old, the family moved back to the Chase farm, where he has lived ever since.

He was married to Phyllis Frank on June 2, 1949, in Walton.

He was employed at Scintilla, Bendix and retired in 1985 from the Amphenol Corp. of Sidney, from the experimental department following 35 years of work.

Howard liked keeping busy and had a metal machine shop besides repairing electric motors in his hobby shop, he built for his father on the farm.

He attended Sidney Central School, Class of 1948.

He did extensive traveling with his wife to many European countries, New Zealand and Australia following his retirement.

He was a member of the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and a former acolyte, Freedom Lodge No. 324 F&AM of Unadilla, Sidney Moose Lodge No. 277, and a former member of Sidney Elks Lodge No. 2175.

Mr. Chase is survived by his wife, Phyllis Chase, of Unadilla; his sister and brother-in-law, Kalma and Gerald Kniffen of Wescosville, Pa.; his brother-in-law, Hart C. Patchen of Clay; nephews and nieces, Dan, Bev and Chase Kniffen and Mary Carter Kniffen of Richmond, Va., Cindy and Dave Clemens and Kalma and Teila Clemens of Alburtis, Pa., Todd, Linda, Austin and Hunter Johnson of Coopersburg, Pa., Alan, Robin, Cameron, Jillian and Adam Kniffen of Greensburg, Pa., a nephew, Jeffrey Patchen of Indianapolis, Ind.; a niece, Janet Patcher Shipley, Robert, Robbie, Rachel and Reice of Central Square; several cousins, Geraldine Sherman Martin and family of Altha, Fla., Caroline Sherman Frost and family of Pine Bush; his brothers-in-law, Bill, Dick and Rodger Sherman of Florida, and sister-in-law, Mary Sherman Wilder of Florida. Besides his-in-laws, Wm. S. Frank Jr. of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and his children, Ellen Mae W. Gennarino of Unadilla, and her children, of which Beth W. Madsen was very special to him, Robert E. Frank, Binghamton, Nancy J. Barnard of Sidney and her sons, Mike, Tom, Doug and Scott, were all very special to him, Richard J. (Butch) Frank and family of Walton. He had two godsons, Maverick Madsen and Toby Ayre and a goddaughter, Bonnie Winans. His adopted family, Owen and Thelma Ayre and their children of Unadilla, and the McClure family. Many cousins, one who lived with us for a short time, Leslie Wright for her senior year and graduated from Sidney Central School, Class of 1970. His special pal "Buffy" a toy poodle, who misses him as much as his caring wife, family and friends.

He was predeceased by his son, Clair Chase in 1965; and his sister, Virginia C. Patchen in 2002.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2003, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Unadilla, with the Rev. Joel T. Grigg, rector officiating.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2003, when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5 Oak Ave., Sidney, NY 13838 or St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 240 Main St., Unadilla, NY 13849.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.
