Terry F. Peckham

PRATTSVILLE — Terry F. Peckham, 87, of Prattsville died May 7, 2003, at the Mountainside Nursing Home, Margaretville.

He was born on Dec. 23, 1915, in Prattsville, he was the son of Eugene Pardee Peckham and Beulah F. (Marquit) Peckham.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Corinna (Truesdell) Peckham, who he married on June 30, 1937. He is also survived by two children, his daughter, Gail Peckham of Schenectady, and his son, Terry E. Peckham of Prattsville. Mr. Peckham is also survived by his sister, Marie Truesdell of Roxbury; sister-in-law, Eva Irwin; brother-in-law, Don Irwin; and brother-in-law, David Truesdell, and his wife, Shirley; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Peckham was the former highway superintendent of Prattsville, and he also worked at the Green Del Packing Company in Prattsville.

He then bought and operated a dairy farm in Huntersfield and eventually bought and operated the Peckham Homestead Farm in Little Westkill.

Terry was a longtime supporter of Conservation Law Enforcement and assisted Officer Volker in the apprehension of many wildlife violators.

He was a member of the Dairymen's League for many years. Mr. Peckham enjoyed riding his ATV often.

A graveside service will be conducted at the Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville, on Friday, May 9, 2003, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Larry Majors officiating.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham.

Clayton Sparkes

STAMFORD — Clayton Sparkes, 76, of Stamford died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at his home.

He was born May 26, 1926, in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, the son of Silas and Mary (Parsons) Sparkes.

He married Edythe Hamm on Jan. 8, 1946.

Mr. Sparkes was employed at Catskill Craftsman and for the Hall Funeral Home in Stamford. A prior owner of the Griddle Inn of Stamford, he also enjoyed business with his sons in Sparkes and Sons Contracting.

He was a member and served for more than 30 years for the Stamford Fire Department. His public service also included the position of Stamford town constable.

Clayton loved his grandchildren and his interests included working with wood, baseball and animals.

His wife of 57 years, Edythe; sons, David of Las Vegas, Nev., and Darryl and his wife, Kathy, of Stamford; and grandsons, Dana and his wife, Michelle, of Reno, Nev., and Joshua and Cory Sparkes of Stamford, survive him.

Mr. Sparkes had 16 brothers and sisters, two of whom survive: a sister, Marie Arnold of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and a brother, Jim Sparkes of Cornerbrook, Newfoundland.

Several nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States; and a sister-in-law, Ardith Hamm of South Jefferson, also survive.

Services will take place at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Donald Simmons

DAVENPORT — Donald Simmons, 84, of Davenport died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at home.

He was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Hobart, the son of Harry and Lillian (Cormany) Simmons.

A lifelong area resident, Mr. Simmons was a dairy farmer with a farm in Davenport.

He married Lillian Bice on March 8, 1945. She predeceased him May 3, 1994.

A son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Linda Simmons of Lakeland, Fla.; grandson, Derek Simmons of Rochester; three sisters, Winifred Augusta and Edith Weatherby of Edgewater, Fla., and Eleanor Pickett of Stamford; two brothers, Everett of Hobart, and Ed of Colorado; and several nieces and nephews survive him.

A granddaughter, Denise Simmons; and a brother, William, predeceased him.

There will be no calling hours.

Graveside services will take place on Monday, May 12, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake officiating.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Bradley Charles Sutliff

UNADILLA — Bradley Charles Sutliff, 5 days old, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Albany Medical Center, Albany.

He was born May 3, 2003, in Albany, the son of Paul and Jamie (Maines) Sutliff.

He is survived by his parents, Paul and Jamie Sutliff, of Unadilla; his brother, Chase Sutliff of Unadilla; maternal grandparents, Judith and Charles Maines of Sidney; paternal grandmother, Irene Sutliff of Oneonta; great-grandmothers, Madeline Kean of Sidney and Lillian Jury of Pennsylvania; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Bradley was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Charles Sutliff; and his great-grandfathers, John Kean and Carl Maines.

Funeral services will be private. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Paul Lum

EAST WORCESTER — Friends are invited to join the family for the committal service for Paul Lum, 80, who passed away April 7, 2003. The service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at the Ferris Family Cemetery in Decatur.

Arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Kathryn H. Dunne

ONEONTA — Graveside committal services for Kathryn H. Dunne, who died Feb. 14, 2003, at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Daniel F. Smith

ONEONTA — A graveside committal service for Daniel F. Smith, who passed away on March 6, 2003, will be held on Friday, May 9, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Walter W. Clapper

ONEONTA — Walter W. Clapper, of Otego, passed away at the A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta on Thursday, May 8, 2003.

Walter was born on June 25, 1923, in Maryland, N.Y., to George and Ethel Speh Clapper.

Walter joined the United States Army and served in the Asiatic and Pacific theaters during WWII. After service, he worked in several different occupations including heavy equipment operator in construction work, groundskeeper for Laurels CC and truck driver for Munsons in Oneonta.

Walter was a very patriotic, loving and caring man. He had an infectious sense of humor that he passed on to his children. He was musically talented and could play steel guitar, harmonica, mandolin and his electric lead guitar.

While overseas in WWII, he had a band and always enjoyed finding someone to play with. He would thrill the grandchildren with Christmas carols every Christmas on the guitar and taught several of the children and in-laws the guitar. When Walter wasn't entertaining with his music, he enjoyed fishing and watching stock car racing.

Walter is survived by his wife, Thelma Brannen Clapper, whom he married in 1979 in West Oneonta. Other survivors are his eight children and spouses, Bev and Don Wyckoff of Otego, George and Debra Clapper of Morris, Donna and Tom Mullinex of Oneonta, Kim and Marie Clapper of Oneonta, Angel and David Ferguson of Oneonta, Tim and Darcy Clapper of Hartwick, Walter Clapper Jr. of Otego and Cindy and Randy Brundage of Oneonta; a brother, Otto Clapper of West Oneonta; sister, Dorothy Van Steinburg of Otego; 20 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and his constant companion "Mackie," his Maltese dog.

Walter was predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Charlotte KleinGardner Clapper; two sisters, Evelyn KleinGardner and Esther Kleingardner; and his firstborn son, Walter Clapper Jr.

Calling hours for Walter will be on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the family present.

Funeral services will be held at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Interment will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in honor of Walter. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Alice P. Gordon

SARASOTA, Fla. — Alice P. Gordon, 75, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., died Thursday, May 1, 2003.

She was born Sept. 20, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Sarasota in 1987, from Albany, N.Y.

She was a social worker and graduated from New York University. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, Palm-Aire Country Club and Temple Emanu-El. While in Oneonta, she was a member of the Oneonta League of Women Voters, Oneonta Country Club and Temple Beth El.

She was married to Dr. Sanford Gordon, who was a professor of economics at the State University College at Oneonta.

Survivors include her husband, Sanford; a daughter, Ellen G.; a son, Eric A.; brother, Peter Pressman, and five grandchildren.

Services were Friday, May 2, at Palm-Aire Country Club.

Memorial donations may be made to Temple Emanu-El, 151 S. McIntosh Rd., Sarasota, FL 34232.

Rebecca D. Witt

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. — Rebecca D. Witt, 41, of Elk Grove Village, Ill., formerly of Oneonta and Cobleskill, N.Y., died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at the Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, Ill.

Born June 26, 1961, in Park Ridge, Ill., she was the wife J. F. Craig Witt, mother of Shawn, Travis and Justin Witt, daughter of Lou Ellen Boehm, and sister of Porsia Minarik.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at the Meadows Funeral Home, 3615 Kirchoff Road, Rolling Meadows, Ill.

Fred E. Covey

CHERRY VALLEY — A graveside committal service for Fred E. Covey, 50, beloved husband of Dawn Duncan Covey, of Cherry Valley, who passed away on Jan. 10, 2003, will take place at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday May 14, in the Mohawk Cemetery. The Rev. Wrightson Tongue, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer and Little Falls, will officiate.

Arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home Inc., Herkimer.

Mary Bayzon

HERKIMER — A graveside committal service for Mary Bayzon, 86, of State Highway 80, Fort Plain, who passed away on Jan. 12, 2003, will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 12, in St. Mary's Cemetery, town of Herkimer. The Rev. Cindy Makarchuk will officiate.

Arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Mary Helen Kardys

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside committal service for Mary Helen Kardys, 92, of North Port, Fla., who passed away on April 2, 2003, will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 12, in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Richfield Springs. Sister Patricia Woolheater will officiate.

Arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

James O. Sullivan

OTEGO — Graveside committal services for James O. Sullivan, who died April 4, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14, at the West Oneonta Cemetery, West Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Floyd N. Locke

ONEONTA — Floyd N. Locke, 88, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Jan. 20, 1915, the son of Jerry N. and Luella C. (Spring) Locke. He married Pauline L. Fuller on Oct. 31, 1935, in Oneonta.

Floyd retired from the railroad system in 1978 with more than 35 years of service. He worked with the Delaware & Hudson in Oneonta from 1941 to 1952, the New York Central in Syracuse from 1952 to 1969, as well as the Penn Central-Conrail in Selkirk from 1969 to 1978. During that time, he worked as a machinist and a locomotive inspector. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge and a former member of the Leatherstocking Railway Historical Society Inc.

Floyd also enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading and coin collecting.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Pauline L. Locke of Oneonta; his daughter Jane M. Lints of West Oneonta; his grandchildren, Kelly Georgia and her husband, Ron, April Ruthford and her fiance, Chris Brown, Karen Lints and John Orsini, Jerry Locke, Sue Locke, Barbara Locke, and Paul Locke; 20 great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and one brother, Paul Locke of Alabama.

He was predeceased by two sons, James M. Locke and Vernon W. Locke; two granddaughters, Debbie Sharer and Becky Locke and three brothers, Harold, Bernard, and Albert Locke.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home on Thursday evening, May 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. William Lang, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial and committal services will follow in Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in Floyd's memory.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Anna C. Walton

OXFORD — Anna C. Walton passed away of natural causes on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

Anna was born on Aug. 6, 1922, in Marvin Hollow in Walton. She was the daughter of Corbett L. and Margaret L. Calkins.

Mrs. Walton graduated from Walton High School in 1940. She was employed at several places in Walton before moving to Sidney in 1947, where she worked at Kent's Store.

In July 1948, Anna married Lawrence DeMorier in Afton and moved to Bainbridge. In 1950, she went to work in E.C.D. of Bendix.

In 1962, Anna married James S. Walton in New York City. They made their home in Afton until 1967, when Mr. Walton left Bendix for employment at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock.

Mrs. Walton is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Barnhart of Walton and Mrs. Amelia McDonald of Whitesboro; one son, Roger L. DeMorier and his wife, Marilyn, of Morris; grandsons, Roger L. DeMorier and wife, Kimberly, of New Port News, Va., Chris D. DeMorier and fiance Ronda of Norwich, Frederick J. DeMorier and wife, Kelly, of Unadilla; two great-grandchildren, Derrick J. DeMorier of Unadilla and Ciara N. DeMorier of New Port News, Va.; step-grandchildren, Keith Conrade of Shelby, N.C., and Ken Conrade of Cookesville, Tenn., two stepgreat-grandchildren, Christopher and Dylan Conrade of Binghamton; several nieces nephews, grandnieces and many friends.

Her parents, her husband of 27 years, one sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy Lee and George, and a brother-in-law, Arnold Barnhart, predeceased her.

Funeral and committal services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The Rev. Sundar Samuels of the First Baptist Church of Bainbridge will officiate.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Burial will be in Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Jane B. Bohlinger

COBLESKILL — Jane Buck Bohlinger, 99, of Petersburg, Va., formerly of Cobleskill, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at South Side Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Va., after a short illness. She had resided with her daughter in Petersburg, Va., for the past 20 years.

She was born May 10, 1903, in East Arlington, Vt., the daughter of the late Edward Lemuel and Carrie F. Case Buck. She married the late Edward L. Pratt in 1928 in Cobleskill, and later in 1955 married the late Phillip Bohlinger in Cherry Valley.

Her family moved to Cobleskill in 1916, where she graduated from high school in 1922. She attended Oneonta Normal School, receiving her teacher's degree in 1925. After teaching in Amsterdam for two years immediately following her graduation, she then taught in the Cobleskill Central School system for 33 years.

She was a longtime member of the Cobleskill Methodist Church and for many years was in the Eastern Star before moving to Virginia.

She is survived by her two daughters, Patricia Lundy of Hemet, Calif., and Sandra VanValkenburg of Petersburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Kurt Liittschwager of Redwood City, Calif., Tammy Wrightman and husband, Patrick, of Manassas, Va., Eric Liittschwager of Garden Grove, Calif., and Nadine McCoy of Martingsburg, W.Va.; five great-grandchildren, Nathan, Eliza, Hannah and Ivanna Liittschwager and Alyshia McCoy; two nieces, Mary Oliver of North East Palm Bay, Fla., and Mildred VanDerwerker of Cherry Valley; four great-nephews and two great-nieces.

A graveside memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Cobleskill Cemetery with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating. Burial will follow.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cobleskill Methodist Church, 6 Chapel St., Cobleskill, NY 12043.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
