Dolores Guilhot

DELHI — Dolores Guilhot, 74, a 25-year Delhi resident, passed away Saturday night, May 17, 2003, at her home, following a short illness.

The daughter of the late Benjamin and Dora (Fradkin) Horney, she was born Nov. 24, 1928, in New York City, and married Pierre Guilhot in 1961.

A graduate of Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pa., where she received her doctorate in English literature, Dolores was an editor with Forbes magazine in New York City, until her retirement nine years ago.

Surviving are her husband of 42 years, Pierre Guilhot of Delhi.

Private funeral and cremation will be made through Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice, Delhi, will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son, Delhi.

George E. Lang

COOPERSTOWN — Committal and military services for George E. Lang, who died March 10, 2003, will be held on Wednesday, May 21, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

Arrangements are under the directions of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

John R. Hood

DELHI — Graveside services for John R. Hood, who died Feb. 20, will take place Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, N.Y., with Rev. Bert More officiating.

Arrangements are by MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Marguerite Burchhardt

ONEONTA — Interment services for Marguerite Burchhardt, who died Jan. 5, 2003, will be held on Tuesday, May 20, at 11 a.m. in the Otsdawa Cemetery, Otego.

The service will be performed by the Rev. William Lang and is under the direction of the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Royce Yager

OTEGO — Royce Yager, 58, of Otego, died Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at his home.

He was born Jan. 8, 1945 in Oneonta, N.Y., the son of Harry and Marie (Cook) Yager.

He married Gland Louise Simmons on Nov. 21, 1964, in West Oneonta. Mrs. Yager predeceased him on Sept. 13, 1999.

A lifelong area resident, Royce worked in the tool crib at Amphenol in Sidney for many years.

He is survived by his two sons, James Richard Yager of Woodstock, Conn., and Brian Lynn Yager and his wife, Jean, of Franklin, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Ryan Charles and Kristen Ivy Yager and their mother, Heidi Yager, all of Woodstock, Conn., and Megan Yager of Franklin; a sister, Lois Hunsucker of Otego; a brother, Robert Yager and his wife, Hope, of Maryland; a brother-in-law, Ronald Simmons and his wife, Jackie, of Oneonta; a sister-in-law, Connie Quackenbush and her husband, Norman, of Oneonta; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A graveside memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to a favorite charity in Royce's honor.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Theda Carr and Norman Carr Sr.

ONEONTA — Graveside committal services for Mrs. Theda Carr and her husband, Norman Carr Sr., will be held on Wednesday, May 21, at 1:30 p.m. in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Jack Clark officiating.

Mrs. Carr passed away on March 29, at the Robinson Terrace Care Facility in Stamford.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Marguerite Loree Tubman

OTEGO — Marguerite Loree Tubman, "Peggy," 86, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2003, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford, N.Y.

She was born in Limpsfield, England, daughter of the late Robert Fresnell Loree and Alix Ghislaine Loree.

Marguerite grew up in Montclair, N.J., attended St. Elizabeth's Academy and Eden Hall. In 1937 she graduated from Douglas College with a degree in English literature. In 1938 she received a degree from the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City and worked as a secretary at the Guaranty Trust Company in Manhattan.

In 1945 Marguerite joined the United States Navy and reached the rank of Lieutenant working in the Communications Decoding Department on Staten Island during World War II.

In 1948 she married Henry Harrison Tubman and moved to Center Valley, Pa., where she helped her husband on their dairy farm.

Several years later she served as Vice President of Saucon Valley Proprietors, a housing development company she started with her husband. During this time she coordinated volunteers for the American Red Cross, was a member of the Women's Club of Lehigh Valley and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1974 and continued to live in Center Valley until 1979 when she retired and moved to Otego to be close to her family.

She appreciated the quiet life of upstate New York spending time playing bridge, reading, and watching her granddaughters grow up. She was an avid knitter and made many heirloom pieces.

She is survived by her sister Alix Tubman of Calif.; her two daughters and their spouses, Mary Louise and Brian Foley of Otego and Martha and Charles Bremer of Otego, and three granddaughters; Jessica Bremer and her husband Josh Faust of Oakland, Calif., Karin Bremer, a freelance artist, and Lara Bremer a student in Santa Cruz, Calif. She was predeseased by two brothers, Lee and Robert Loree.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the New York State Veteran's Home at Oxford or the American Red Cross. Private funeral arrangements will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Roger Steiner

OTEGO — Roger Steiner, 88, of Otego, N.Y. died Monday, May 12, 2003 at home.

He was born February 2, 1915 ,in Gland, Switzerland, the son of Otto Emile and Marie Dolores (Houest) Steiner.

In October 1922 he came to the U.S. with his mother and brother to join his father who had come before them to New York City. In 1939 Roger became a U.S. Citizen with his family.

He married Madeline Rometta Fredenburgh on July 10, 1940 in Huntersfield, N.Y. Roger and Madeline lived in Prattsville, N.Y., where they owned and operated a 365-acre dairy farm. In 1957, they moved to Otego, where he started Steiner Packing Company. Roger was also a licensed real estate salesman and broker for 37 years from 1965 to 2002.

In his spare time, he enjoyed carpentry and making beautiful furniture. He built two homes, one in Grand Gorge, N.Y., and one in Otego.

He was a 40-year member of the Otego Masons; a past member of the Otego Rotary, where he also served as president; a Village of Otego trustee; as well as a member of the Otego United Methodist Church.

Roger was a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, who will be dearly missed.

He will be remembered by his family and friends for his ever present sense of humor.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Madeline, of Otego; his two children: his son, Larry Roger Steiner of Otego and his daughter, Judith Marie Steiner of Fly Creek; a granddaughter, Michelle Saunders and 4 great grandchildren all of Indian River, Mich.; a grandson, Benton James Miller of Hanover, N.H., and a granddaughter, Abigail Marie Miller of Des Moines, Iowa.

He is also survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene and Winfield Hinkley of Grand Gorge, Georgette Givens of Jensen Beach, Fla., and Lillian and George Schermerhorn of Jensen Beach, Fla.; his sister-in-law, Estelle Steiner of Greenville, N.C.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Roger was predeceased by his brother, Rene Otto Steiner.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, May 21, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River Street, Otego, from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, May 22 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to either the Otego United Methodist Church, Church Street, Otego, NY 13825 or to the Otego Elderkin Emergency Squad, River Street, Otego, NY 13825 in loving memory of Roger Steiner.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

Alfred Prentice

EAST WORCESTER — A memorial service for Alfred Prentice of East Worcester, N.Y., who died Feb. 6, 2003, will be held on Saturday, May 24 at 11 a.m. at the Worcester United Methodist Church for all friends and family.

A graveside service will follow at the lower cemetery in East Worcester and then all are invited to a gathering at the home of his parents at 22 Depot St., East Worcester.

Memorial contributions may be made in Alfred's memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 1311 Mamaroneck Ave., Suite 310, White Plains, NY 10605.

Orville S. Smith

BAINBRIDGE — Graveside services for Orville S. Smith, who passed away Dec. 27, 2002, will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2003, at 11 a.m. in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge, N.Y.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main Street, Sidney, N.Y.

John 'Jack' R. Hood

DELHI — Graveside services for John "Jack" R. Hood, who died Feb. 20, 2003, will take place today, Tuesday, May 20, at 10 a.m. at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Arrangements are by MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Donald A. Holcomb

EMMONS — Graveside committal services for Donald A. Holcomb will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2003 at 1:30 p.m. in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons, N.Y. with the Rev. Judy Thistle officiating.

Mr. Holcomb passed away on Dec. 5, 2002 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Cornelius 'Nick' Allen

WESTFORD — The graveside committal service for Cornelius "Nick" Allen, 83, who died Dec. 13, 2003, will be held at the Westford Cemetery on Saturday, May 24 at Noon, with the Rev. Edward Golding officiating.

Military honors will be presented by the Schenevus VFW Post 2752.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus, N.Y.

Melba E. Shafer

EAST WORCESTER — The graveside committal service for Melba E. Shafer, 79, who died March 19, 2003, will be held at the Richmondville Cemetery on Friday, May 23 at noon, with the Rev. Susan Strang officiating.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

William P. Armour

UNADILLA — Graveside committal services for William P. Armour, who passed away Jan. 16, 2003, will be held in Unadilla Center Cemetery, Sunday, May 25 at 1 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the Wescott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Undilla, N.Y. under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, Funeral Directors.

Eugene 'John' Dilello

ONEONTA — Eugene "John" Dilello, 72, of Oneonta, N.Y., passed away on Monday, May 19, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Oct. 19, 1930, in Oneonta the son of John E. and Mary (Hoffman) Dilello. He married Dawn E. White on June 28, 1952.

For more than 35 years, retiring in 1992, John worked for ECD Bendix in Sidney, N.Y.

For a period of time he was a member of Company G, National Guard.

John was a member of St. Mary's Church, and the Sixth Ward AC, where he was one of the founders.

In his younger years, he was involved in many local sporting activities, including town basketball, Little League baseball, Oneonta High School booster club programs, fast pitch softball, as well as bowling.

He was an avid Yankees fan.

After retirement, John was a crossing guard at Center Street School.

He also was a transporter for Five Star Nissan.

He will be mostly remembered for the support shown to his children and grandchildren in their sporting events.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dawn E. Dilello of Oneonta; his children and their spouses: Robin and Randy Winans of Sidney, Gary and Milynda Dilello of Oneonta, Julie and Bob Zaveral of Mt. Upton, N.Y., John and Traci Dilello of Oneonta, JoAnn and Bob Winn of Oneonta, and Jill and Shawn Bookhout of Mt. Pocono, Pa.; his grandchildren: Kevin Van der Sommen, C. J. Minor, Tony Dilello, Kristin Winn, Melanee Winans, Tyler Dilello, Alex Winn, Jordan Dilello, Jennifer Dilello, Ryan Zaveral, Jenna Rose Dilello, Danielle Bookhout, and Jaci Lynn Zaveral. He is also survived by a sister, Marie "Jean" Kiser of Oneonta, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two grandchildren, Jessica Bookhout, and Johnathan Dilello.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, May 22 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Laurens Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Christopher W. Smythe

STRAFFORD, Pa. — Christopher Wetherill Smythe, 42, of Strafford, Pa., a vice president at ING Variable Annuities in West Chester, died Friday, May 9, 2003, of injuries he suffered in a car accident in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Mr. Smythe was born in Philadelphia. His family later moved to Rochester, N.Y., and Mr. Smythe graduated from Pittsford Sutherland High School in 1978. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1982.

After graduation, Mr. Smythe worked for a Delaware division of PNC Bank.

He then joined ING Variable Annuities, working as a vice president of fund accounting and compliance. Mr. Smythe had been with the West Chester firm for seven years.

Mr. Smythe was a member of the Tredyffrin-Easttown Youth Soccer Association and St. Georges Episcopal Church in Ardmore.

He served on the church vestry and on the financial planning committee, and as coordinator and teacher in the Sunday school.

His wife, Bryn Johnston Smythe, and a daughter, Cameron Sinclair Smythe, survive Mr. Smythe. In addition to his wife and daughter, his parents, Ann Stout Smythe and J.L. Nevill Smythe, as well as brothers, T.H. Butler Smythe, J.L. Nevill Smythe III, and three sisters, Virginia S. Spofford, Elizabeth S. Kreuzer and Patricia S. Leach, survive Mr. Smythe.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 17 at St. Georges Episcopal Church.

Harriet Tiderencel

ONEONTA — Mass of Christian Burial for Harriet Tiderencel, 65, who passed away Thursday, May 15, 2003, will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 21, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta, N.Y.

Koreen Alice Vriesma

SPRINGFIELD — A graveside committal service for Koreen Vriesma, 60, who passed away on Jan. 20, 2003, will be held on Sunday, May 25, at 2 p.m. in Springfield Center Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Akers, Pastor of the Mohawk Reformed, will officiate.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Robert Northrup

ONEONTA — Committal services for Robert Northrup, 59, who passed away Nov. 13, 2002, will be held today, May 21, 2003, at Plains Cemetery at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John Grenier officiating.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta, N.Y.

Anthony Boschetti

ONEONTA — Committal services for Tony Boschetti, 71, will be held at 1:30 p.m., today, May 21, 2003, at Plains Cemetery with the Rev. John Grenier officiating. Mr. Boschetti passed away March 3.
