RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside committal service for Howard B. VanderVeen, 83, who passed away on Jan. 10, 2003, will be held on Saturday, May 24, at 2 p.m. in Twilight Rest Cemetery, town of Richfield.

The Rev. Kenneth Prol, Pastor of the Trinity Christian Reformed Church, Richfield Springs, will officiate.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Dorothy Mary Weeks

HARTWICK — Interment services for Dorthy Mary Weeks, who died Feb. 16, 2003, at her home in Hartwick, N.Y., will be held Friday, May 23, at 11 a.m. in the Hartwick Village Cemetery. The service will be preformed by the Rev. James Pollock and are under the direction of Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta N.Y.

William P. Armour

UNADILLA — A Graveside Committal Service for William P. Armour, who passed away Jan. 16, 2003, scheduled for Sunday, May 25, has been canceled and will be announced at a future date.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc. under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, Funeral Directors.

Ralph Emerson Lent

OTEGO — A Graveside Committal Service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, May 23, 2003, at Otego Evergreen Cemetery for Ralph Emerson Lent, 79, of Otego, N.Y., who died Dec. 28, 2002. Rev. Craig Merritt, Pastor of the Otego Baptist Church, Otego, will officiate. Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, N.Y. under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, Funeral Directors.

Alfred Prentice

EAST WORCESTER — A memorial service for Alfred Prentice of East Worcester, N.Y., who passed away Feb. 4, 2003, will be held on Saturday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at the Worcester United Methodist Church for all friends and family.

A graveside service will follow at the lower cemetery in East Worcester and then all are invited to a gathering at the home of his parents at 22 Depot St., East Worcester.

Memorial contributions may be made in Alfred's memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 1311 Mamaroneck Ave., Suite 310, White Plains, N.Y. 10605.

John Vincent Armstrong

ROME — Mr. John V. Armstrong, 81, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2003 in Syracuse V.A. Hospital after a short illness.

He was born June 13, 1921, in New York City, N.Y., the son of William J. and Beatrice (Kelly) Armstrong.

On August 20, 1955, he married Sheila Baldwin in London, England; she survives.

For over 31 years he did active duty in the (Army Air Corps) during WWII, then in the US Air Force serving in England, New York, Okinawa, Japan, Thailand, Okinawa, California, Michigan, Texas, Mass., and many numerous stations around the world, retiring from the US Air Force with the rank of Master Sergeant. He attended extended college in Cambridge, England.

He was a loving, giving father of eight, grandfather, and great-grandfather and an adviser to many.

He had a great love of cars and history.

Survivors besides his wife, Sheila Armstrong of Rome, N.Y., include two sons and their wives: John and Janette Armstrong of Taberg, N.Y., Steven and MaryJo Armstrong of Rome; six daughters: Nancy and her husband, Tom Nieva, of Las Vegas, NV, Marie Beauchene of Syracuse, N.Y., Connie and her husband, Wayne Brown, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Cathy McDaniel of Clinton, N.Y., Helen and her husband, Patrick Abraham, of Hope Mills, N.C., Teresa and James Pruett Jr. of San Antonio, TX; 16 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; a brother William and his wife, Ellen, Armstrong of Cooperstown, a brother Thomas and his wife, Lillian, Armstrong of Springfield Center, N.Y., and sisters-in-law Jannette and Virginia Armstrong of Springfield Center. He was predeceased by his parents, and brothers Clarence and Eneas, also a sister Marion Evans.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, N.Y., with prayers at 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 23, at 11 a.m. in St. Thomas Church, Cherry Valley; burial will follow in the Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center.

Contributions in Mr. Armstrong's memory may be made to the Syracuse V.A. Hospital, 800 Irving Ave., 13210 or Buffalo V.A., 3495 Bailey Ave., 14215.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Edward J. Doherty Jr.

UNADILLA, N.Y. — Edward James Doherty Jr., 62, of 155 Cross Rd., died on Tuesday, May 20, 2003.

Ed was a retired supervisor of systems at SIAC, Brooklyn, N.Y. where he worked for 31 years. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Hartford, Conn., and St. Patricks Roman Catholic Church in Smithtown, N.Y.

He was a longtime volunteer and outspoken member of the Democratic Party.

Ed was born in Hartford, raised a prodigious family in Nesconcet, N.Y., and summered at Point-O-Woods, Conn.

He graduated from the University of Connecticut at Storrs with a B.A. in History.

Ed was a true example of love, courage, faith, honesty and sacrifice: a loving husband and father, and a wonderful brother and son. He was a hopeless romantic, an idealist, and a great promulgator of all things literary (especially Winters Tale by Mark Helprin). Music lit his fire. He was a prankster and was a gifted satirist and storyteller.

His life was a great novel that should never end. His accomplishments and love for his family can not be measured.

He was the son of the late Josephine Doherty and Edward Doherty I of Hartford.

He is survived by his beloved wife, ardent lover and best friend Diane Doherty (daughter of the late Helene and Raymond Thibault); his sons: Edward Doherty III and wife, Deanna, Raymond Doherty and wife, Sabina, Thomas Doherty, Christopher Doherty, Gary Doherty, Eric Doherty, Edwin Doherty; his nearly adopted son, Sean; his daughters: Kelly Verret and husband, Michael, Terry Brylawski and husband, James, Korry Doherty, Trisha Doherty and Rita Doherty; his two sisters, Sharon Lander and husband, Joseph, and Gail Foss and husband, Robert; one brother, John Doherty and wife, Ginger; his two grandchildren: Michael John McCormick and Michael Paul Verret, Jr.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, from Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 15 Liberty St. Sidney, N.Y. The Rev. Gordon A. Polenz will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Edward James Doherty Jr. to the Little Flower Childrens Services, 2450 N. Wading River Rd., Wading River, NY 11792, attention: Development Office.

Rita and Gerald Hazlett

FRANKLIN — Graveside committal services for Rita Hazlett and her husband, Gerald Hazlett, will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, N.Y., with the Rev. Mr. Mike Donnell officiating.

Mrs. Hazlett passed away on April 4, 2003. Her husband, Gerald, passed away on Nov. 26, 1997.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Yolande F. Rathbun

COOPERSTOWN — A memorial service for Yolande F. Rathbun, who died April 24, 2003, will be held on Saturday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield, 5446 U.S. Highway 20, East Springfield, N.Y.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Ralph Richards

MORRIS — Friends are invited to attend graveside committal services with military honors for Ralph Richards of Unadilla, N.Y., who died March 27, 2003. Services will be on Saturday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at Hillington Cemetery in Morris, N.Y.

Norma H. Eckert

ONEONTA — Graveside committal services for Norma H. Eckert, who died Feb. 26, 2003, will be held on Friday, May 23, at 10:30 a.m. at Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Thelma Mead

GRAND GEORGE — Thelma "Judy" Mead, 58, of Grand George, N.Y., passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2003 at her residence.

She was born on August 22, 1944 the daughter of Theodore and Marian (Wolcott) Mead.

Judy has been employed by NBT Bank in Grand George for 20 years working as a teller.

She has lived in Grand George for most of her life.

She graduated form Hunter-Tannersville Central School, and was a past member of the Grand George Fire Dept. Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was a loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by three daughters: Holly and her husband Ted Aplin Sr. of Prattsville, N.Y., Dawn and Rob Yungen of Calif., and Joanne and Michael Cleary of South Cairo, N.Y.; nine grandchildren: Tyler Reed, Ashley Aplin, Cassandra Aplin, Tod Aplin Jr., Tristian Yungen, Daniella Johnson, Michael Johnson, Christopher Cleary, and Cameron Cleary; mother, Marian Mead Grand George; two sisters: Tersa Castle and Betty Thomas; two brothers: Robert Mead and Theodore Mead; nieces and nephews; and a best friend, Jane Madore, Grand George.

Calling hours are on Saturday, May 24 at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, N.Y. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be on Sunday, May 25 at 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Grand George. The Rev. Elliot Cakes will officiate. The burial will take place at the Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, N.Y.

In memory of Thelma M. Mead donations may be made to the Grand George Fire Dept. Rescue Squad, Grand George, NY 12434.

Dorothy Whispell

COOPERSTOWN JUNCTION — Graveside committal services for Dorothy M. Whispell, who died Jan. 19, 2003 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, will be held on Wednesday, May 28 at 2 p.m. at the Cooperstown Junction Cemetery, Cooperstown Junction, N.Y.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Abigail Engel Squires

WORCESTER — Abigail Engel Squires, 28, died in Oneonta, N.Y. on Wednesday, May 21, 2003.

She was born on April 11, 1975 in Naples, Fla.

She was a wonderful mother, a loving daughter and a caring wife. She will be missed by her family and friends and will always be loved and cherished.

Abigail is survived by her husband Alan Squires, her daughter Virginia Star Squires and her mother Gail B. Sondergaard and step-father Clifford Sondergaard of Worcester, N.Y. and her father William C. Engel and step-mother Mickey Engel of Newville, Ala.

Memories of Abigail will he shared Saturday, May 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Cliff and Gail Sondergaard's farm on Decatur Rd. in Worcester.

Memorial donations can be made to Virginia' Star's education fund at the Charter One Bank in Worcester.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner, Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Marian C. Rich

CHERRY VALLEY — Committal services and burial for Mrs. Marian C. Rich, 85, who passed away Monday, April 7, 2003, at Bassett Heathcare, Cooperstown will held on Tuesday, May 27 at 11 a.m. in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley, N.Y. Burial will follow.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Alice Huggins

BUTTERNUTS — Alice Huggins, 81, of the Town of Butternuts, departed this life on May 21, 2003 after a long illness.

Alice was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Nov. 11, 1922, the daughter of John and Gabriella (Bartholf) Conway.

She grew up in the Hudson Valley, where she married Bruce Huggins. She moved to the area in the 1960s and has lived near Gilbertsville for the past 10 years. Since her illness, she has lived with Bruce, June and Rick at their home on Murphy Road near Gilbertsville.

She worked for many years in the fabric and drapery departments at Bresee's. She was an avid quilter and enjoyed sharing this craft with others. She gave freely of her time and energy to her family, friends, and neighbors.

She is survived by Bruce and June Huggins of Butternuts, David and Ellen Huggins of Ballston Spa, N.Y., Michael Huggins, a "German daughter" Karin, grandchildren: Rick, Darcy, Bill, Gregg, Zack, and Tim; a special niece, Tracy; a sister Eleanor; and other family and friends. Her husband died in 1967.

Friends may call on Alice's family home on Murphy Road in the Town of Butternuts on Wednesday, May 28 between 5 and 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, her family suggests a donation be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Marion H. Brophy

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Marion H. Brophy, 77, of Nelson Avenue in Cooperstown, N.Y., died Thursday morning, May 22, 2003 at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on Feb. 4, 1926 in the Binghamton General Hospital, a daughter and only child of Milton and Grace (Fleming) Hancock.

On Sept. 4, 1949 she married James U. Brophy in Albany, N.Y.

In her youth, Marion attended the Westover Elementary School and later graduated from Johnson City High School with the Class of 1944. She then attended the New York State College for Teachers in Albany where she majored in English and Social Studies. In 1948, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

For 18 years she was employed by the New York State Historical Association in Cooperstown as the special collections librarian. She later became employed by the Otsego County Clerk's Office, where she served as a legal recorder for 15 years, retiring in 1992.

Of the Baptist faith, Marion enjoyed local history and often assisted people in compiling their family trees. In the past few years she served as the historian for the Town of Otsego.

Marion is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jim, of Cooperstown; their four children, Michael D. Brophy, Esq., of Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Patricia Ann Kelly and her husband, Nicholas, of Schuyler Lake, N.Y., James M. Brophy and his wife, Jacqueline, of Fly Creek, N.Y., and Dennis J. Brophy and his wife, Erin, of Memphis, Tenn.; eight grandchildren: Brian and Justin Brophy, Sean, Ryan, and Patrick Kelly, Alexandra Brophy, and Taylor and Clarisse Brophy; and three great-grandchildren: Joseph, Haley and Charles Kelly.

Friends may call at the funeral home this afternoon and evening, Friday, May 23, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. when Marion's family will be in attendance.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, in the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut Street, Cooperstown, with the Rev. John A. Blackman, pastor emeritus of the Second Baptist Church of Edmeston, N.Y., officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, 19 Elm St., Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to the Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Marion Sheridan

SOMERSET — Marion Sheridan, 70, of Somerset, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at Robert Wood Johnson University, New Brunswick.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided in Brooklyn, Florida, Brick, N.J. and Collierville, N.Y. before moving to Somerset one year ago.

Mrs. Sheridan was a homemaker.

She was the wife of the late Harold Sheridan.

Surviving are five sons: Steven Oravets of Atlantic Highlands, N.J., David Oravets of Manahawkin, N.J., Mark Oravets of West Creek, N.J., Michael Woods of Nutley, N.J., and Norman Woods of Hillsborough, N.J.; two daughters: Mary De Castrique of Gainsville, Ga. and Kristina Tarnow of Tukerton, N.J.; two brothers: Sidney Malmberg of Denver, Colo. and Norman Malmberg of Manchester, N.J.; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visiting will be Saturday, 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Silverton Memorial Funeral Home, 2482 Church Rd., Toms River. Funeral services will be Saturday 11 a.m. at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Laurelton Cemetery, Brick.

Peter Mokay

DELHI — Peter Mokay, 74, of Delhi, N.Y., died suddenly Thursday morning, May 22, 2003, at O'Connor Hospital in Delhi.

Mr. Mokay was born in Maplewood and attended Maplewood School and Watervliet High School.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, working in the postal unit. This lead to his lifelong interest in zip codes and his collection of postcards from around the world addressed simply to Say Something Nice 13753. He served at Tulley Bay, Greenland, and also in Germany (auf Wiedersehen Peter).

He was employed at Marshall Eclipse before moving to Delhi in November of 1949, to begin Mokay Bros. Inc., with his brothers. They operated Mokay's Grocery Store, Mokay's Liquor Store and Mokay Brothers Appliances.

He truly believed in giving and served his community for more than 30 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 190 of Delhi, Delhi Volunteer Fire Department, Delaware County Republican Committee, Delhi Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis. He was a communicant of St. Basil Orthodox Church in Maplewood and also attended St. Innocent Mission in Oneonta.

He was the seventh child and sixth son of the late Demetrios and Mary Rogosky Mokay

His kind heart made him many friends around the world. He enjoyed cooking and was well-known for his huge batches of spaghetti sauce that he shared abundantly with all. He believed in kindness, and his motto of Say Something Nice was remembered by all who met Peter.

He lived life his way. He loved his family and was proud of all their accomplishments. He loved giving and had in fact given people the shirt off his back. His home had an open door and all were welcomed to come in.

Peter is survived by his wife of 50 years, Vera Viola Wasilenko. He was the proud father and father-in-law of Peter Mokay and his wife, Joan, of Troy, Linda Kostun and her husband, Dr. William, of Troy, Alan Mokay and his wife, Kathy, of Liverpool, N.Y., and Paula Phipps and her husband, Jeffrey, of New Albany, Ind. He was the beloved Poppi to Linda, Paul, Tyler, Kaitlyn and Alyssa Mokay, Alexis, Zachary and Lara Kostun, Brittany and Sierra Phipps; brother of John Mokay and his wife, Teresa, William Mokay and his wife, Irene, Andrew Mokay and his wife, Nellie, all of Delhi, Anne Mokay and her husband, the late Michael Mokay, Catherine Bielewa and her husband, Frank, of Maplewood and Mary Bushallow and her husband, David, of Kensington, Md.

He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, who he loved.

He was predeceased by his son, Philip, his brothers, Alexander and Michael, and his sister, Tina.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Parastas services will be held at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 26, from Parker Brothers Funeral Home, Broadway, Watervliet, and 10.30 a.m. from St. Basil Church, Archibald Street, Watervliet, with the Archimandrite Nicholas Iuhos officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to St. Basil Handicap Access Fund.
