Wesley E. Cleveland

ONEONTA — Graveside committal services for Wesley E. Cleveland will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Mr. Cleveland passed away on March 25, 2003, at the A. O. Fox Nursing Home.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Clarice Schlussler

ONEONTA — Clarice Charlotte Schlussler (Gancfried) passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at Bassett Hospital.

She was born in New York City and lived there until 1966, when she and her husband, Sidney Schlussler, moved to Oneonta and opened a pancake house restaurant in East End Oneonta.

She enjoyed meeting and helping others by volunteering at numerous organizations including AARP, Fox Hospital Auxiliary, Orpheus Theatre, and Temple Beth El of Oneonta. She was an avid traveler and traveled extensively with her husband of 43 years until his death in 1986. In recent years she enjoyed bus trips. She had a loving spirit and wonderful attitude even during times of personal crisis.

She was survived by her son Larry Schlussler, of Arcata, Calif., and daughter Judy Ferber, of Oneonta, as well as numerous cousins scattered throughout the United States.

She is predeceased by her husband, Sidney Schlussler, a brother, Arthur Gancfried of New York City, and a nephew ,Howard Gancfried.

There will be calling hours between l and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, at Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 26, at Temple Beth El of Oneonta, shortly followed by a memorial service.

There will be a private burial for family only.

Contributions in her memory may be sent to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd St., Suite 1100, New York, NY 10016.

May she rest in peace.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Thelma Mead

GRAND GORGE — Thelma "Judy" Mead, 58, of Grand Gorge, N.Y., passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2003, at her residence.

She was born in Catskill on Aug. 22, 1944, the daughter of Theodore and Marian (Wolcott) Mead.

Judy was employed by NBT Bank in Grand George for 20 years as a teller.

She lived in Grand Gorge most of her life.

She graduated from Hunter-Tannersville Central School, and was a past member of the Grand Gorge Fire Department Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was a loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Holly and Ted Aplin Sr. of Prattsville, N.Y., Dawn and Rob Yungen of California and Joanne and Michael Cleary of South Cairo, N.Y.; nine grandchildren, Tyler Reed, Ashley Aplin, Cassandra Aplin, Tod Aplin Jr., Tristian Yungen, Daniella Johnson, Michael Johnson, Christopher Cleary and Cameron Cleary; mother, Marian Mead of Grand Gorge; two sisters, Teresa Castle and Betty Thomas; two brothers, Robert Mead and Theodore Mead; nieces and nephews; and a best friend, Jane Madore of Grand Gorge.

Calling hours are Saturday, May 24, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, N.Y. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, at the United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge. The Rev. Elliott Oakes will officiate.

Burial will take place at the Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, N.Y.

In memory of Thelma Mead, donations may be made to the Grand Gorge Fire Department Rescue Squad, Grand Gorge, NY 12434.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Ricky E. Dye Sr.

SOUTH EDMESTON — Ricky E. Dye Sr., 38, of South Edmeston, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, in Cooperstown.

He was born May 13, 1965, in Utica, a son of David and Mary (Simmons) Dye of Hubbardsville.

He spent his childhood in New Berlin and attended Hamilton Central School.

He was married on Aug. 9, 1986.

Ricky worked for the New York Pizzeria in New Berlin. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, WWE wrestling and football, especially the Dallas Cowboys.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; his three children, Jennifer Dye, Rachael Dye and Ricky Dye Jr., all of South Edmeston; brothers, David and Jessica Dye of Hubbardsville and Ronald Dye of Hubbardsville; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Crandall of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Tammy and Jeff Harrington of New Berlin and Larice and Paul Layton of Bainbridge; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and his good friend Bob Bliss.

He was predeceased by his grandparents and one brother, Michael Dye.

Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, at the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin officiating.

Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin.

Interment will be in the Gazlay Cemetery, South Edmeston.

Memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, the South Edmeston Community Church or the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Elizabeth S. Bunn

SOUTH HARTWICK — A committal service and burial for Elizabeth S. Bunn, 89, of South Hartwick, who died Jan. 14, 2003, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, in Hartwick Cemetery with the Rev. Roger G. Yoder, pastor of the Hartwick United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Hilton I. Brown

WORCESTER — A graveside service for Hilton I. "Brownie" Brown, 77, who died Feb. 1, 2003, will be held at the East Worcester Cemetery, Route 7, on Wednesday, May 28, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Worcester American Legion Post 1584

Arrangements are by the E. J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Edith M. Crandall

MORRIS — Graveside committal services for Edith M. Crandall will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at 11 a.m. in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Mrs. Crandall passed away on Dec. 17, 2002, at the Robinson Terrace Care Facility in Stamford.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Robert D. Ward

ONEONTA — Robert D. Ward, 86, of Oneonta, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born on March 6, 1917, in Carbondale, Pa., the son of Russell and Frances (Norris) Ward.

He first married Doris Hitchcock on Oct. 16, 1944, and she passed away on Dec. 16, 1994. On Nov. 4, 1998, he married Anna J. (Constantino) Ross.

Bob worked for ECD Bendix for 41 years, where he held various management positions. He retired in 1978 as the manager of manufacturing.

He was a member of the Italian American Club.

He is survived by his wife, Anna J. Ward of Oneonta; his children, Gail Morey and her husband, Richard, of Oneonta, and Pat Hutchinson of Graham, Wash.; his stepchildren, Sandy Swift and her husband, Gary, of Oneonta, and Carol Whiting and her husband, Bob, of Davenport; his grandchildren, Stacy Morey Fazio, Candace Morey, Wendy Ceyler, Rachael Crossman and Robert Welcher; and several great-grandchildren and stepgrandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Jean Hontz and her husband, Howard, of Latham; as well as nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Steven Ward.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2003, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Robert J. Virtell

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Robert J. Virtell, 39, of state Highway 166, died early Sunday morning, May 25, 2003, at his home.

He was born in Cooperstown on June 1, 1963, a son of James L. and Elizabeth (Miller) Virtell.

After attending Milford Central School, he worked for David Drake in Cooperstown, Whitney's Car Sales in Oaksville, the Cooper Inn in Cooperstown, Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester, and most recently as a logger for Nelson's Forestry in Roseboom.

He married Donna Marie Covney on Feb. 14, 1993.

Bob enjoyed spending time with his family as well as hunting, fishing, camping, boating, working on cars and demolition derbys. He was also an avid NASCAR racing fan.

He is survived by his wife, Donna M. Virtell; a son, Robert (Bobby) W. Virtell; a daughter, Evonne L. Virtell, all at home, as well as Donna M. Carney and fiance, Scott Potter, of Norwich, Ruben E. Carney of Cooperstown, Ann M. Carney and Shane Young of Cooperstown; his mother, Elizabeth (Betty) Virtell of Milford; a brother, Wesley O. Nelson and his wife, Lorraine, of Roseboom; a sister and brother-in-law, Shari L. and Lannie Richards of Cooperstown; a brother and sister-in-law, William R. (Bill) and Kitty Miller of Cooperstown; a sister and brother-in-law, Donna A. and John Thorn of Milford; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald A. and Audrie Virtell of Milford; four grandchildren; an aunt and uncle, Bernice and Arthur Strong of Westville; an uncle and aunt, Peter and Elna Virtell of New Berlin; many nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as many good friends.

He was predeceased by his father, James L. Virtell.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Marian Mumbulo

PITTSFIELD — Marian L. Mumbulo, 69, of Pittsfield, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born Jan. 27, 1934, in Treadwell, the daughter of William and Flora (Johnson) Lake.

She married Daniel J. Mumbulo on Aug. 14, 1953. He predeceased her on July 6, 1997.

Marian had been employed by Kraft Foods in South Edmeston as a cheese packer for 19 years; she had also worked for Chase Nursing Home as a housekeeper. However, once she opened her doors to the Broome County Developmental Center to care for others in need, she found one of her true vocations. Marian was also active in the Pittsfield Emergency Squad, where she had served as an EMT, later she was active in the Pittsfield Auxiliary.

She enjoyed cooking, cake decorating, taking her clients out and about, and most of all she loved her grandchildren.

Marian is survived by her three children and their spouses, Travis and Tami Mumbulo of North Carolina, Patricia and Nick Tukalo of Edmeston, and Katrina and Theodore Reidenbach of New Berlin; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; her siblings, Brownell Lake of Cooperstown, Seymour Bourne of Otego, and Viola Clark of Utica.

Calling hours will be from noon until 2 p.m. prior to the funeral services on Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home.

Contributions may be made in Marian's memory to the Pittsfield Emergency Squad; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Harriet D. Watrous

MARGARETVILLE — Harriet D. Watrous, 100, of Margaretville, died Monday, May 26, 2003, at the Countryside Residential Care Center, Delhi, where she has been a resident since March 30, 1999.

She was born June 23, 1902, in Freetown, the daughter of George R. Watrous and May O'dell. She was never married.

Harriet graduated from Cortland State College in 1926. She was a retired school teacher. Harriet had taught at the West Hempstead School District, retiring in 1961. After that time she taught part-time at the Margaretville Central School in the elementary classes.

On Nov. 16, 1984, she moved to Margaretville.

She was an active member in the United Methodist Church, Margaretville; Eastern Star Chapter No. 718 on Long Island. She was a member of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was a life member of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital; the New York State Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Anna Watrous, Cortland; first cousins, Dorothy Manning and Austin Watrous; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by six brothers and one sister.

There are no calling hours.

Funeral and committal services will be conducted at the Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville, at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2003, with the Rev. Joon Woo Lee officiating.

Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery Annex, Margaretville.

Donations in memory of Harriet D. Watrous may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville, N.Y. 12455.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Paul R. Martin

GRAND GORGE — Paul R. Martin, 69, of Route 23, Grand Gorge, died May 23, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 1, 1933, in Norwood, Mass., the son of Elmer Martin and Julia Barry.

He married Shirley Greenman on Dec. 23, 1953, in Waterville.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953 to 1961.

Paul worked on many large construction jobs, then went on to own his own business, Paul Martin & Sons for the past 20 years.

He was a devoted member and participant of the Grand Gorge Community Action Group.

Paul is survived by his wife, Shirley Martin, of Grand Gorge; his loving children and their families, three sons, Michael and wife, Pamela Martin, of Martinsburg, W. Va., and their son, Eli and Jen Martin, David Martin of Grand Gorge, and Cheryl and children, Chris, Stacey and Ethan, and Steven and wife, Brenda Martin, of Grand Gorge, and their three daughters, Amanda, Jessica and Gabrielle; one daughter, Paula Walsh of Hobart, and her sons, Jason and Bob; one great-grandson, Christopher, son of Eli and Jen Martin; three sisters, his twin sister, Paula Wiltse of Schuyler Lake, Laura Desmarias of Attleboro, Mass., and Teresa O'Brien of Medway, Mass.; one brother, Raymond Martin of Richfield Springs; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Frank and Frederick.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, May 27, 2003, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at the St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church in Grand Gorge, with the Rev. Anthony Ligato as celebrant.

Committal services will be held at the convenience of the family.

If desired contributions in his name may be made to the Grand Gorge Community Action Group, P.O. Box 306, Grand Gorge, N.Y. 12434.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Lois B. Hadcock

ALBANY — Lois Bennis Hadcock, 85, of Albany, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2003, in Albany Memorial Hospital, Albany.

Born in Foster, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of the late Mason and the late Bertha (Kennedy) Bennis.

She was the wife of Charles E. Hadcock.

Mrs. Hadcock received her bachelor's degree from Rhode Island College. She taught elementary school at many schools, including Cooperstown Central School.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Churches of Valatie and Cooperstown, DAR, Eastern Star, Circle X and the Grange. She also was a volunteer for the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital.

Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, Stephen Hadcock of Valatie; one daughter, Nancy Dudley of Bolivar; one sister, Carolyn Kertula of Foster, R.I.; her grandchildren, Rory, Reid, Joel and Micah Dudley and Carrie Hadcock. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from noon to 1:30 p.m. today at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Route 9, Valatie. Funeral services will follow in the First Presbyterian Church, Valatie, with the service conducted by the Rev. Stark Jones.

Interment will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, Hartwick.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be sent to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 267, Valatie, N.Y. 12184 or the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.
