Jane S. Butts

MASONVILLE — Jane S. Butts, 61, of Church Street, Masonville, passed away Friday evening, May 23, 2003, at her residence.

She was born May 20, 1942, in Cortland, the daughter of the late Robert and Ruth Long Sloan.

On Sept. 14, 1963, she married James "Jack" Butts in Sidney. Jack predeceased her on May 30, 1998.

Jane was a partner with her husband in the Butts Concrete Products business in Masonville.

Jane is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Terry Lent, Masonville; two granddaughters, Amanda Jane and Alisha Mary Lent, Masonville; sister-in-law and companion, Patricia A. Butts and Robert Pike, Plantation, Fla.; and her longtime caregiver, Lucille Durbin, Masonville.

Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 25, 2003, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Robert Howard, pastor of the Federated Church of Masonville, officiating. Burial followed in the Masonville Cemetery, Masonville.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Masonville Emergency Squad, Masonville, if desired.

Skyler Jade Soulia

MALONE — Skyler Jade Soulia, 3 months old, of 1247 county Route 24, Malone, died unexpectedly Friday, May 23, 2003, in Malone.

Born in Malone, Feb. 12, 2003, she was the daughter of Josh Soulia and Brittany Latulipe.

Along with her parents, she is survived by one brother, Brendon Soulia, 2, at home; her maternal grandparents, James and Casandra Stone of Malone, and Edmond and Dawn Latulipe of Bombay; maternal great-grandparents, Charles and Mary Lesuer of Otego, Edna Latulipe of Bombay, and Glenn and Susan Black of Fort Covington; paternal grandmother, Tracey Soulia of Danielson, Conn.; paternal great-grandparents, Jack and Suzanne Soulia and Lerald and Carmelita Paige, all of Malone; one aunt, Bethany Latulipe of Chazy; and one uncle, Trevor Soulia of Plattsburgh.

She was predeceased by her maternal great-grandfathers, Edmond Latulipe and Richard Tenace; and her paternal grandfather, Gerald Brault.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 3:45 p.m. at the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home in Malone. A funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Msgr. Dennis Duprey officiating. Burial will be in St. John Bosco Cemetery.

Juanita S. Peet

LAURENS — Graveside committal service for Juanita S. Peet, formerly of Laurens, will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Judy Thistle officiating. Mrs. Peet died on Dec. 23, 2002, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Steven Van Winkler

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Committal services and burial for Steven Van Winkler, 93, who passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at his home, will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center, with the Rev. Persis Williams officiating. Burial will follow.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Lester C. Schuman

SIDNEY — Graveside services for Lester C. Schuman, who passed away Feb. 3, 2003, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2003, in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Margaret E. Davis

HOBART — Margaret E. Davis, 90, of Gainesville, Fla., died Saturday, April 12, 2003.

A former Hobart resident, she moved to Florida in 1996.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Davis, and a son, Earl Davis.

Survivors include daughters, Helen Tolmach of Gainesville, Fla., Elizabeth Tierney of Bartow, Fla., and Marion Bishop of Arley, Ala.; a son, Walter Davis of Schenectady; brothers, Robert Chambers and Howard Chambers, both of Dade City, Fla., and Donald Chambers of Davenport; sisters, Clara Louise Bevins of Dade City, Fla., and Margery Trask of Norwich; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will take place on Saturday, May 31, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

Local arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Velma G. Rider

DELHI — Velma G. Rider, 87, of Delhi and a longtime resident of Andes, passed away on May 26, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Velma was born in Union Grove on Aug. 5, 1915, the daughter of Milo D. Weaver and Alta F. Gregory.

She married Earl Rider on Aug. 31, 1935, in Andes. He predeceased her in August of 1990.

She graduated from Hilton High School in Andes. She was a member of the Andes United Methodist Church, since the 1930s.

Velma made jewelry and sold it at craft shows with her husband. She also enjoyed fishing.

Surviving are her son, Gordon Rider of Andes; three daughters, Shirley Oliver of Redmond, Ore., Jean Haddon of New Berlin, and Nancy Klingensmith of Chocowinity, N.C.; a sister, Viola Weaver of Delhi; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Faye Holmes.

Friends may call at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes, on Wednesday where the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 29, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Andes United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Martha Vink, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Andes, officiating. Burial following in Andes Cemetery.

Memorials to Catskill Area Hospice or the Andes United Methodist Church in the name of Velma Rider are appreciated.

Clayton Moore

JEFFERSON — Clayton Moore, 92, passed away peacefully at Fairview Commons Nursing Home in Great Barrington, Mass., on May 22, 2003.

He was born in Roxbury, the son of Otis and Elizabeth (Acker) Moore on Jan. 24, 1911.

He graduated from Jefferson Central School in Jefferson.

He married Helen Clyde of Lynbrook, in Bloomville, on April 6, 1940.

Clayton was very musical; at one time playing guitar, harmonica and blessing church choirs with his pleasing voice.

Many animals received his gentle attention when he worked with Dr. Dansky. He was a self-appointed caretaker of all things growing at the Newman Home in Copake Falls where he lived for many years.

Survivors include his brother, Cleo Moore and his wife, Ruth, Jefferson; and three children, Alice Milewski of Scotia, Margaret Triolo of Milford, and Clayton Moore Jr. of Ithaca; eight grandchildren; a niece and nephew and several cousins.

Three sisters and a brother predeceased him.

A graveside committal service for Clayton will be held on June 7, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the West Jefferson Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Kazinski of Milford, officiating.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Neil Gumaer

MILFORD — Mr. Neil Gumaer passed away May 25, 2003.

He was born in Benton Township, Pa., on Nov. 28, 1914, to Hugh and Shirley (Ross) Gumaer.

He is survived by his two granddaughters, Erica Gumaer and Kristen Gumaer-Green; a grandson-in-law, Roger Green; and his great-granddaughter, Sydney Green.

He was predeceased by his wife, Pauline; and his son, Leon.

In 1935, he married Pauline Gougoulis. They moved to Binghamton, with their son, Leon.

Neil worked at Thompson's Dairy and the Binghamton Transit Authority. Neil and Pauline bought the B and B Market, which was later known as the Big B Market on Front Street. For the next 33 years they were actively involved in the community and with the Masonic Temple.

In 1983, Neil and Pauline moved to Milford, and were actively involved in the United Methodist Church of Milford and the Milford's Senior Citizens. Neil was recognized by Otsego County for his active involvement with the Nutrition Sites. He was also part of the Historical Society.

A memorial service will be held at a future date at the United Methodist Church of Milford, with the Rev. Robert Kazinski, pastor officiating.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 29, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Clifford, Pa., with the Rev. John Dawson officiating. His cremated remains will be interred at the Clifford Cemetery in Clifford, Pa., in the family plot immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made to the Milford Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 359, Milford, N.Y. 13807.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Isabel B. McManus

ONEONTA — Isabel B. McManus of Oneonta passed away at her home on Saturday, May 24, 2003.

She was born in Burlington, the daughter of Albert N. and Anna (Hall) Bolton.

She graduated from Edmeston High School and attended Plattsburgh Normal School. After teaching three years, she married Harold W. McManus. She moved to Oneonta and operated McManus Market for 17 years. Mr. McManus passed away on July 23, 1954.

Isabel was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta, also the Oneonta Business Women's Club. She was also treasurer for the Oneonta District of the Wyoming Conference for two years, as well as serving for several years on the Administration Board at the First United Methodist Church. She was appointed to the Oneonta Housing Authority in 1972, prior to the dedication of the Albert S. Nader Towers, and remained on the board until 1980.

Isabel will be remembered for her close association with the Oneonta Yankees and the Oneonta Tigers — having box seats behind home plate for many years.

Her nephew, Grant Campbell of Johnsonville; and her niece, Beverly Felske of Florida survive her. She is also survived by her close friend and caregiver, Ruth Mumbulo of Oneonta; and her close friends, the Morley family of Oneonta.

A graveside committal service will be held on Friday, May 30, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. in the Burlington Green Cemetery, Burlington, with the Rev. Thomas G. Taylor, Interim pastor officiating.

A memorial service for Isabel will be held at a later date in the Embury Room at the First United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in Isabel's memory.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Alba C. Hubbell

BAINBRIDGE — Alba C. Hubbell, 83, of 647 Junction Road, Bainbridge, passed away unexpectedly Monday afternoon, May 26, 2003, at the home of her daughter.

She was born July 28, 1919, in Oneonta, the daughter of the late Andrew H. and Mabel Hopkins Cope.

Alba graduated from the Oneonta High School, Class of 1938. She continued her education at Oneonta State Teachers College, Oneonta, the Class of 1942.

On March 1, 1941, she married Frank J. Hubbell in Oneonta. He predeceased her on Dec. 2, 1996.

Mrs. Hubbell was an elementary teacher from 1955 until her retirement in 1980, for the Sidney Central Schools.

She was a member of the Tri-Town B.P.W., Sidney Chapter No. 255 O.E.S., The Sidney Hospital Guild and the Sidney Fire Department Auxiliary.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Arlene and Bruce McCoon, Bainbridge; two sons and daughter-in-law, Wayne and JoAnn Hubbell, Oxford, and Bruce Hubbell and his companion, Marlene Ward, Tonawanda; her twin sister, Alice Maine, Gilbertsville; her brother, Stuart Cope of Alabama; six grandchildren, Steven McCoon, Amy Puerile, Daniel Hubbell, Stephanie Green, Trisha Green and Timothy Green; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A brother, Clarence, and a sister, Ethel predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2003, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Michael Shank, pastor of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, officiating.

Friends are invited to call Thursday at the funeral chapel. The family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Burial will be later at the convenience of her family in the East Guilford Cemetery.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Mount Upton Emergency Squad or the Sidney Hospital Foundation, 43 Pearl St., Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Sophie Kleban

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Sophie Kleban, 80, of Monticello Street, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Monday morning, May 26, 2003, in her home.

She was born on March 16, 1923, in Herkimer, daughter of the late Alexander and Anna Maslanka Skramko. Sophie was raised and educated in both Richfield Springs and West Winfield.

In September of 1942, she married Nicholas Kleban in Saint Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Herkimer. Mr. and Mrs. Kleban owned and operated a dairy farm in the town of Columbia until 1960. They have resided in Richfield Springs since that time.

Mrs. Kleban had a strong belief in God and was a member of Saint Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Herkimer. She was a member and past president of Hugick, Parcell and Shepardson American Legion Post No. 616 Ladies Auxiliary, Richfield Springs.

Sophie had a warmth and friendship with everyone she met. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family — especially her four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Besides her husband of 60 years, Nicholas, she leaves a son, John Kleban of Richfield Springs; two brothers, Steve Skramko of Springfield Center, and Daniel Skramko of Georgetown; two sisters, Mary Zawko of Richfield Springs, and Wanda Taylor of West Winfield; one sister-in-law, Madaline Skramko of Cooperstown; four grandchildren, Derek Kleban of Ilion, Nicole Kleban of Little Falls, Alexander and Katerina Kleban, both of Fly Creek; one great-grandson, Lucas Kleban of Ilion; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents; four brothers, Michael, Charles, John and Nicholas Skramko, preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be on Thursday at 10 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Yaloslav Stebelskyy, pastor of Saint Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Herkimer, officiating. Parastas will be on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. in the funeral home. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 7 until 9 p.m.

Those who wish may make expressions of sympathy to the Catskill Area Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Emilio Alessandro Rascionato

ONEONTA — Emilio Alessandro Rascionato of Oneonta, died May 27, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born in Lioni, Italy, on April 1, 1931, to Alessandro and Carminella DiConza Rascionato.

He and his first wife, Michelina, made their home in Oceanside on Long Island, where Emilio was a self-employed masonry contractor. In 1994, he retired and they moved to their property in Oneonta. Michelina died in 1995, after 43 years of marriage. On Oct. 23, 1997, Emilio and Cynthia Kemper were joined in marriage in Oneonta.

Emilio loved hunting any time that he could get away, tinkering with cars, cooking and eating and traveling. He was a stern, fair and proud man never admitting to sickness. He loved to laugh and make those around him laugh. Emilio was a Jehovah's Witness and loved the witness ministry and sharing his faith.

Survivors are his wife, Cynthia Rascionato, of Oneonta; children and their spouses, Carmelina and Frank DelPriore, Emilio and Maria Rascionato Jr., and Marisa and Michael Licata, all of Oceanside, Long Island; grandchildren, Angelo DelPriore, Dr. Emilio DelPriore, Laura Judd, Christopher Rascionato, Marisa Rascionato, Michael Licata, Anthony Licata, and Michela Licata; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Dylan Judd and Sophia DelPriore; brother, Felice Rascionato of Lioni, Italy; sister, Maria Iorlano of Las Vegas, Nev.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, will be Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. with the family present.

Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery on Friday at 10 a.m. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall, 3985 Route 23, Oneonta.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Vern E. Walley Jr.

ONEONTA — Vern E. Walley Jr., 57 years of age, of Swart Hollow, Oneonta, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Aug. 1, 1945, in Davenport, the son of Vern E. and Eneth (Roe) Walley Sr.

He married Susan Oliver on July 21, 1966, in Edmeston.

Vern moved to Swart Hollow when he was 3 years old and has lived there ever since.

He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, during the Vietnam Era.

He worked at Hartwick College as a baker for 32 years, retiring in 1996 due to failing health.

He was a past member of the Oneonta Moose Club. Vern enjoyed raising pigs, fishing, hunting, working on automobiles and just being outdoors.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Susie Walley, of Oneonta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca and Wayne Tilley of South New Berlin, and Brenda and Howie Walley Stables of Oneonta; two granddaughters, Lea Niclole Stables of Oneonta, and Tara Mae Tilley of South New Berlin; one brother, Robert Walley of Swart Hollow, Oneonta; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Arthur DeJoy of Swart Hollow, Oneonta, Barbara and Gary Kliment of Greene, and Elizabeth Banks of Franklin; one uncle, Harlan and Marilyn Walley of Walton; mother-in-law, Peggy Burgher of Oneonta; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rose and Mitchell Hitt of Maryland, Donna and Claude Payne of Remsen, Roger and Denise Oliver of Oneonta, Fred and Bonnie Marble of Oneonta, and Shirley and Ric Perkins of Washington; a nephew, Joe and Fran DeJoy; a niece, Eneth Davenport; a nephew who is serving his country in Iraq, Michael Kliment; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Vern was predeceased by his parents, Vern E. and Eneth Walley Sr.; and one sister, Joanne Goodspeed.

Memorial services will be held at Vern and Susie's home at a later date. Friends and family may contact Susie at 432-3208 for more information.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
