ONEONTA — Graveside committal services for Eli H. "Bud" Baird, who died Dec. 25, 2002, will be held on Friday, May 30, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Robert Gordon Keesler

ONEONTA — Graveside committal services for Robert Gordon Keesler, who died Nov. 28, 2002, will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta, with Douglas Coddington, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Bert Santora

MERIDALE — Graveside memorial services for Col. Bert Santora, who died Nov. 2, 2002, will be held on Friday, May 30, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Meridale, with John Truscott, officiating. Full military honors will be presented by personnel from Ft. Drum.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Bernice Chichester Davis

BLOOMVILLE — Graveside services for Bernice Chichester Davis, formerly of Bloomville and Schenectady, will take place on Saturday, May 31, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

Local arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Clarence John Bogardus Sr.

FORT EDWARD — Clarence John Bogardus Sr., 79, of State Route 196, passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at the Glens Falls Hospital, after a long illness.

Born on Feb. 26, 1924, in Mayfield, the son of the late Harry and Lena (King) Bogardus.

On June 7, 1942, John married Clara Clark in Schenevus.

In 1948, he started working for Arkell & Smith in Canajoharie.

In 1958, he and his family moved to this area so that he could work at the Arkell and Smith Plant in Moreau, which later became Chase Bag. He retired in 1984.

John was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hudson Falls.

He loved pitching horseshoes and traveling. John and his wife were on the road four days a week during the summer, for horseshoes. He has been a member of the Moreau Horseshoe Club since 1976, and also a member of the International Horseshoe Pitcher's Association.

He wanted everybody to know he passed a happy man. He had a good life and had done what he wanted. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He treated all of his friends as family.

Besides his parents, John was predeceased by a son, Charles John Bogardus.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Clara Bogardus, of Fort Edward; his children, Carol Lundgren of Hartford, Evelyn Bishop and her husband, Raymond Larry of West Haven, Vt., Clarence Bogardus Jr. and his wife, Nora of Argyle, and Harry Bogardus and his wife, Peg of Fort Edward; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters, Rachel Flint of Canajoharie, Franklin Bogardus and his wife, Celia of Hudson, Elizabeth Snyder and her husband, Lawrence of Cherry Valley, Margaret Cotton and her husband, Gordon of Little River, S.C., and Phyllis Smith of Herkimer; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call on Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St., in Hudson Falls.

A memorial service will be conducted on Friday evening at 8 p.m., following the calling hours, with the Rev. David Lefurgey, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Hudson Falls, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in Westford Cemetery in Westford.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the C.R. Wood Cancer Center, 100 Park St., Glens Falls, NY 12801 or the Fort Edward Rescue Squad, Inc., P.O. Box 226, Fort Edward, NY 12828.

Berta Becker

WEST DAVENPORT — Berta Becker, 104, a longtime resident of West Davenport, died on May 25, 2003, in Santa Monica, Calif.

Berta Becker was born in Esslingen, Germany, on Jan. 7, 1899. She was one of 12 children.

In 1928, she came to the United States and settled in New York City and was proud to become a United States citizen.

In 1936, she married Joseph Becker, a custom tailor, who had also emigrated from Germany. From 1950 to 1987, the Becker family resided on a farm on Prosser Hollow Road, where she had one of the first bed and breakfast establishments.

In addition, she engaged in organic gardening and dairy farming. As a hobby, after doing research, she designed a replica of Martha Washington's afternoon tea gown and covered the entire gown with over six thousand canceled George Washington postage stamps from the era of 1936.

In 1966, Mrs. Becker took first prize of an electric stove in the annual Oneonta Star cooking contest with her famous sauerbraten and spaetzle recipe.

For the past several years she resided at Studio Royale, a retirement home in Culver City, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 1977.

She is survived by her daughter, Karoline Waldman, and son-in-law, Irwin Waldman of Santa Monica, Calif.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2003, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Lynn Ash, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, West Burlington, officiating. Burial will be in Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 to 8 at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Jane C. Knapp

ONEONTA — Jane C. Knapp, 86, of Countryside Care Center of Delhi, and formerly of 25 Maple St., Oneonta, passed away May 27, 2003, at her residence, after a lengthy illness.

She was born Jan. 26, 1917, in Oneonta, the daughter of Emilio and Carmela (Passer) DiFiore.

She married Raymond "Pete" Knapp in Oneonta in 1946. Pete predeceased her in 1978.

Jane was a housewife and mother of three sons.

She was employed many years at Bendix, Sidney, and 17 years at Center Street School, Oneonta.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Rosary Society, Altar Guild and Young at Heart. She taught religious education for many years at St. Mary's.

She graduated from St. Mary's School, Oneonta, Oneonta High School and attended business school.

She is survived by three sons, Dr. David Knapp and his wife, Dr. Jodie Jenkins, and family, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Joseph Knapp and family, Franklin, and Edward and Stacey Knapp and family of Belle Mead, N.J.; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

There will be no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, May 30, 2003, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Walnut Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch officiating. The family will be receiving friends at Joe Knapps home, 10030 State Highway 257 in Franklin, following the service.

Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Contributions may be made to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Malcolm E. Johnson

BLOOMVILLE — Malcolm E. Johnson, 82, of Bloomville, passed away at home late Tuesday evening, surrounded by family, following a long illness.

He was born the son of Elwin and Eva (Maxam) Johnson on June 4, 1920, in Halcott Center.

He married Dorothy E. Hitt in Bloomville on June 4, 1944.

A devoted family man he enjoyed spending time with his family. He spent many hours hunting, fishing, trapping and gardening. He was a longtime member of the NRA and was a self-employed farmer and carpenter for many years.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Linda Burdick and friend, Dean of Bloomville, and Sue and George Skog, also of Bloomville; and daughter-in-law, Sandra Johnson of Delhi. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Amy, Joe and Bill Burdick and Stacy, Erik and Matt Skog, all of Bloomville; as well as several nieces and nephews.

His son, Lynn A. Johnson of Delhi; son-in-law, Thomas W. Burdick of Bloomville; brother, Leland and wife, Marge; brother, Hillis and wife, Angie; and sister, Sylvia and husband, Clyde predeceased him.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi. The family will be in attendance in the evening.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2003, with the Rev. Linda Wilson officiating, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care or the Bloomville Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Patricia (Kimball) Burak

BYRON — Patricia (Kimball) Burak, 77, of Tower Hill Road, Byron, died May 27, 2003, at her residence.

She was born April 20, 1926, in Cooperstown, the daughter of the late Herbert and Lelah Ames Kimball.

Mrs. Burak graduated from Cooperstown High School in 1944 and from the Knox School for Girls of Cooperstown in 1946.

She was a member of the New York State Daughters of the American Revolution Mary Jemison Chapter for 20 years, where she served as a regent. She was also a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century, Holland Purchase Historical Society, New England Historic Genealogical Society and the First Presbyterian Church of Byron, where she served as a deaconess.

Mrs. Burak had a fond affection and love for her cats, collected teddy bears and was an avid reader and crossword puzzle-player.

She was the wife of the late Dr. Nihat M. Burak, who died Nov. 27, 2001. They were married May 23, 1959, in Cooperstown, and enjoyed traveling around the world.

Survivors include two daughters, Julide F. Burak of Largo, Fla., and A. Nihal Burak of Conesus; one son, Ahmet N. (Bobbie Jo) Burak of Byron; and two grandsons, Brycen N. Burak and Evan N. Burak of Byron.

Friends may call Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the J. Leonard McAndrew Funeral Home, 2 Bogue Ave., Batavia. Services will be Saturday 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Byron, with the Rev. James Renfrow officiating. Burial will be in the North Byron Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Genesee County Animal Shelter.

Arrangements entrusted to the J. Leonard McAndrew Funeral Home, 2 Bogue Ave., Batavia, David R. Penepent, funeral director.

Vince Abrams

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. H. Vincent Abrams, 75, passed away Monday, May 26, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born May 1, 1928, in New Hope, Pa., the son of John and Rose (McCusker) Abrams.

On Sept. 3, 1949, he married Ruth Larison in Lambertville, N.J. She predeceased him on April 24, 2003.

Vince served with the United States Merchant Marines during World War II, and was discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard, and he then served in the National Guard.

He was the owner of Vince Abrams Plumbing and Heating Company in Pennington, N.J., until 1984, and was co-owner, with his wife, of Fact and Fiction Book Store, Cherry Valley, from 1985 until 1996.

He was a member of the Catholic Church, and Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Wingate and Bonnie DeVictoria; four grandchildren, Tara, Austin, Travis and Vincent; a sister, Margaret Saheen of Lambertville, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Public calling will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2003, at the Ottman Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Cherry Valley, with 8 p.m. prayers.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers contributions in Mr. Abrams' memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Health Center.

Philip E. Rand

WORCESTER — Philip E. Rand, 86, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born Nov. 21, 1916, in Portland, Maine, the son of Raymond W. and Gladys (Bryant) Rand.

He married Adelaide Michaelis on Oct. 4, 1939, in New York City. She predeceased him on Jan. 18, 1994.

Mr. Rand was a United States Navy veteran, serving in the Pacific and European Theaters on a PT boat during World War II.

He was retired from the New York Telephone Co. in New York City.

Survivors include his son, Richard, and his daughter-in-law, Mary of Worcester; grandchildren, Patricia and her husband, Gogi of Ballston Spa, Joan of Denver, Colo., and Matthew of Worcester; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 30, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co., in Worcester.

A graveside service will be Monday, June 2, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Flushing.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.

Arrangements by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Howard C. Cole

MILFORD — Mr. Howard C. Cole, 93, of Milford, died Tuesday evening, May 27, 2003, at The Meadows.

He was born on Jan. 18, 1910, in Arkville, a son of Arthur and Anna (Yaple) Cole.

After graduating from high school, Howard spent his working career with the Delaware and Hudson Railroad.

He was a member of the United Transportation Union since 1942.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Wendell and Rose Cole of Middleburgh, and D.Y. and Joan Cole of San Angelo, Texas; a sister, Marion Hanor of Oneonta; a brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Jean Cole of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Isabelle Cole of Maryland; and many nieces and nephews.

At the request of the family there will be no funeral services or calling hours. Burial will be at the Butternut Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Mary J. Broas

MONTGOMERY — Mary J. Broas, a longtime resident of Montgomery, died Thursday, May 22, 2003.

She was born Aug. 31, 1929, in Waterville, the daughter of the late Harry and Lucy Roseboom.

She married Ralph E. Broas on Feb. 27, 1959.

Besides her husband, Mary is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Lance Suydam of Lighthouse Point, Fla.; one sister, Bernice Bachanas and her husband, Norman of Fly Creek; two brothers, Arthur Roseboom and wife, Ida of Westville, and Donald Roseboom and wife, Alice of Toddsville; two granddaughters, Emily and Lauren Suydam; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by five brothers, Paul, Robert, Freeman, Stanley and Leon; and four sisters, Rena Short, Bertha Teachout, Dorothy Smith and Grace Roseboom.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 31, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Montgomery.

Kenraid and Doris Shields

NEW LISBON — Graveside committal services for Kenraid Shields, who passed away March 25, 2003, and Doris Shields, who passed away April 22, 2003, will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

Friends are invited back to the Shields residence after the services.
