Frederick Catella

ONEONTA — Frederick A. Catella of Emmons Hill Road, lost his battle with cancer on May 31, 2003.

He was a lifelong resident of Oneonta and a communicant of St. Mary's Church.

As a veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was decorated in both World War II and the Korean War.

After working for the D&H Railroad and Bendix, he served the city of Oneonta as a firefighter for 19 years. He was injured several times while helping others and retired with a disability in 1977.

He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting and fishing. He enjoyed reading novels about the early America frontier and considered sitting around a campfire — quality family entertainment.

He is survived by Edith (Himes) Catella, his wife of 56 years; as well as his son, Fred Catella and daughter-in-law, Judith, of Pulaski. He was predeceased by his daughter, Linda Meehan, who had two daughters, Stacey Camp and Erin Meehan. He is also survived by his siblings and their spouses, James and Kathleen Catella of Oneonta, Albert Catella of Oneonta, John Catella of Oneonta, Rose Mayo of Minneapolis, Minn., Julia Bennett of Oneonta; and a sister-in law, Marion Myers of Oneonta; his wife's family, Jen and her daughter, Jayne, Spence of Maryland, Catherine Newell of Norwich, Dorothy Himes of Sidney, and Andrew and Beth Himes of Peoria, Ariz.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2003, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating. Interment will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Michael Slater Jr.

FALLS VILLAGE, Conn. — Michael J. Slater Jr., 5 years old, of 16 Johnson Road, Falls Village, Conn., died Friday, May 30, 2003, at his home.

Born June 22, 1997, in Torrington, Conn., he was a student at the North Canaan Elementary School.

He is survived by his parents, Michael J. Slater Sr., and Marsha (Webb) Slater; a sister, Alicia; and a brother, Joseph Andrew, all of Falls Village; grandparents, Roland and Anna Webb of Goshen, Conn., and Robert and Bonnie Slater of Winchester, Conn.; and great-grandparents, Ross and Bea Buel of Gilboa, N.Y., and George Webb of Las Vegas, Nev.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, at St. Thomas Church in Goshen. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Phalen Funeral Home, 285 Migeon Ave., Torrington, on Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Pansy Moore

WEST EXETER — Pansy Moore, 98, died Friday, May 30, 2003, at Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitative Center, Oneonta.

She was born May 25, 1905, in Purlear, Wilks County, North Carolina, the daughter of James R. and Eveline (McNeil) Eller.

She married John Davison Moore on Dec. 24, 1929, in Rock Hill, S.C. He predeceased her in the spring of 1970.

Pansy was a member of the Edgewood Baptist Church.

She had previously owned the West Exeter General Store, and thoroughly enjoyed being a homemaker and spending time with her entire family.

Pansy is survived by her children and their spouses, John Franklin Moore of North Carolina, Janet and Russell Bowen of Burlington Flats, and Virginia and Howard Higgins of Burlington Flats. Her grandchildren, Bonnie Jean Slentz Hickling and her husband, Darin, David Russell Bowen and his wife, Jessica, Daniel Bowen, Nancy Schoellig, Priscilla Cahoon and Donna Currier; her great-grandchildren, Alexis and Troy Slentz, Derek Bowen, Nicholas, Sara and Adam Schoellig, Amanda, Zackary and Bianca Dockstader, Justin Kessler, Chase Cahoon, and Jamie and James Currier. Her sister, Effie Parson; and her sisters-in-law, Alexis McNeil and Lois Sebastian.

Pansy was predeceased by her twin brother, Lawson W. Eller and her brothers, Fred, William, Howard Eller, and Lester McNeil; her son, Frederick Moore; and her grandson, Ronald Bowen.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home. Calling hours are from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. prior to the service on Tuesday.

Interment will follow services at Exeter Center Cemetery.

Donations may be made in Pansy's memory to the Exeter Center Methodist Church.

Richard Washburn

FARMINGTON — Richard M. "Dick" Washburn of Farmington, died May 8, 2003, at Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn., following a lengthy illness.

Dick was born Feb. 22, 1948, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, to Douglass and Gertrude Washburn.

He graduated from Morris Central School, Morrisville Agricultural and Technical College and SUNY at Buffalo, where he received a degree in civil engineering.

He moved to the Rochester area where he founded Brite Associates, an engineering and land surveying firm.

Dick enjoyed the sport of shooting and custom designed some of his own firearms. He was an avid outdoorsman and had a passion for the variety of activities the outdoors has to offer. He was a skilled marksman (both with gun and bow). He loved to hunt, fish, camp and boat. Until his illness, he was an active member of the Victor Gun Club.

His warm smile and gentle manner will be missed by all fortunate enough to have been blessed by his acquaintance.

Special thanks to all the doctors, nurses and staff on the Heart Transplant Unit at Fairview University Medical Center, who worked so diligently caring for and about him during the past six months. A special word of appreciation to all of you who kept him in your prayers during his illness.

He is survived by his mother, Gertrude Washburn, New Lisbon; his wife, Gloria; daughter, Carolyn; and son, James, all of Minneapolis, Minn.; his brother, Bill (Wendi) of New Lisbon; his sisters, Phyllis House (Harold) of Milford, and Margaret (Jeff) of Matthews, N.C. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews; and four great-nieces and -nephews; along with many uncles, aunts and cousins.

Dick was preceded in death by his daughter, Dara Washburn; his father, Douglass Washburn; and his brother, Melvin Washburn.

The family requests memorials may be made to your local American Heart Association or charity of your choice in his memory.

Ronald A. Hanzalik

COLLIERSVILLE — Mr. Ronald A. Hanzalik, 62, of Goodyear Lake, died suddenly Thursday, May 29, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born June 15, 1940, in Oneonta, the son of Albert and Laura (Meyers) Hanzalik.

Mr. Hanzalik married Rose Rodney on June 25, 1986, in Milford. She survives.

Mr. Hanzalik was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served with the U.S. Air Force.

He was a lifelong area resident, and was employed as a bus driver with Greyhound Bus Lines. Mr. Hanzalik also owned and operated a limo service until his recent retirement. Ron was also a member of the Milford Emergency Squad for several years.

Mr. Hanzalik is survived by his wife, Rose, at home; his father, Albert of Homestead, Fla.; two brothers, Albert of Manlius, and Thomas of Schenectady; an aunt, Mrs. Paul (Mary) Rusnak of Binghamton; an uncle, Harry Meyers of Milford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by six stepchildren, including Cynthia (Little Sweetie) of Goodyear Lake; and a close friend, George McMitchell of Oneonta.

He was predeceased by his mother; and a brother, Stephen Hanzalik.

Those who wish may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Edward Carlson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will follow in Saratoga National Cemetery, Saratoga.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Leland Thompson

CANAJOHARIE — Committal services with full Marine military honors and burial for Mr. Leland (Lee) C. Thompson, 66, who passed away Dec. 22, 2002, at Albany Medical Center, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating. Burial will follow.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Mary E. Smith

MOUNT UPTON — Mary E. Smith, of Smith Road, Mount Upton, 91, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 30, 2003, at the M.I. Bassett Hospital of Cooperstown. She passed away after a long and contented life, but had recently battled many illnesses.

Mary was born Feb. 18, 1912, in Unadilla, the only child of Charles and Margaret (Brennan) Beach. Her family later moved to a farm on Fisk Hill in Rockdale, where Mary attended the one-room schoolhouse in the small settlement of Rockdale.

On Jan. 3, 1930, in Sidney, at the Sacred Heart Church, she married Ray J. Smith, who passed away in February of 1953. Together they raised four children.

Dedicated to her family, Mary was a hard worker who enjoyed farm life immensely. She was noted for growing a huge garden and enjoyed growing the biggest possible vegetables, which she would give away to anyone who came by. She also loved her animals and her flowers.

Following the death of her husband, Ray, in 1953, Mary continued to operate the family farm with her son, Alfred E. Smith, who passed away in 1991. Mary was also predeceased by her daughter, Clara F. Sliter in 1981.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Charlotte A. Fuller and husband, Richard, and Phyllis Webb and husband, Tracy, all of Mount Upton. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Michael Fuller and companion, Brenda Friedel, Thomas Fuller and companion, Amy Costello, and Crystal Fuller, all of Mount Upton, Nancy Fuller and companion, Peter Greeley of Unadilla, Dawn Westcott and husband, Charles, of Granby, Conn., Dennis Webb and companion Lorie Rice of Mount Upton, Ronald F. Sliter, stationed with the U.S. Navy, and Teresa Reed and husband, Matt, of Texas; 11 great-grandchildren, Nathan T. Fuller, Devin R. Fuller, Rebecca A. Fuller, Kaitlyn N. Fuller, Christopher J. Fuller, Dylan Webb and Dalton Webb, all of Mount Upton, Alexander and James Westcott of Granby, Conn., and Matthew and Ravine Reed of Texas. Also surviving is a cousin, George L. Barnes of Sidney Center, whom Mary raised from 3 years old.

A Mass for Mary will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003, from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Sidney, with the Rev. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Upton.

Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Leona I. Frank

AFTON — Leona I. Frank, 93, of 215 Main St., Afton, passed away Friday, May 30, 2003, at her residence.

She was formerly from Sidney and Bainbridge.

She was born April 22, 1910, in Sherman, Pa., the daughter of the late Frank and Nellie Moore Fineout.

On Oct. 18, 1928, she married Theodore R. Frank in Honesdale, Pa. He predeceased her Jan. 1, 1994.

She is survived by two daughters, Helen Backus of Bainbridge, and Pauline Burman of New Berlin; a son, Edward Frank of Masonville; her sisters, Ruth Bruning of Bainbridge and Gladys Lynch of Deposit; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

At the request of Mrs. Frank there will be no calling hours or funeral services. Burial will be later in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Deposit.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the charity of your choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Debra J. Harper

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Debra J. Harper, 49, of U.S. Route 20 in town of Warren, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 26, 2003, in her home.

She was born on Aug. 14, 1953, in Cooperstown, daughter of the late Neil and Ruth Ellen Bright Shoffstall. Debra was raised in Richfield Springs and was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School. For a number of years she lived outside the Richfield Springs area returning here in 1970.

She had worked for Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown and for the last two and a half years was a transcriptionist at Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center in Utica.

She will always be remembered as a loving, caring and hopeful person and will be greatly missed by many, especially her family.

Surviving are one daughter, 2nd Lt. Rebecca and her husband, Capt. Chester Gregg (U.S. Army), of Hinesville, Ga.; and her dear friend and companion, John Mulligan of Richfield Springs.

A graveside memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Lakeview Cemetery. The Very Rev. James Jadick will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to the Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center, Utica, or the American Diabetes Association.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Russell F. Ellett

CORTLAND — Russell F. Ellett, 72, of Cortland, passed away June 1, 2003, in Cortland Memorial Hospital.

Russell was born May 24, 1931, in Sanford, the son of the late Floyd B. and Vera I. Thompson Ellett.

Russell enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and listening to bluegrass music.

He served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by his daughters, Jean (Danny) Ferris of Cortland, and Alice (Ivan) Rogers of Cortland; his sons, Raymond (Mildred) Fink of Schenectady, Frank (Judy) Fink of McGraw, Richard (Shelly) Fink of Georgia, and Fred (Elizabeth) Fink of Cortland; his brother, Leland (Theresa) Ellett of Oxford; his sisters, Ruth Finkle of Andes, Elda Parks of New Jersey, Frances Finkle of Andes, Joyce Murphy of Downsville, and Karen Rudick of Downsville; 39 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ellett was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Denzie Ellett in 2001; his son, Lewis Fink; and his brothers and sisters.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland. Interment will follow in Cortland Rural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Ellett's name may be directed to Cortland County Nutrition Program, 60 Central Ave., Cortland, N.Y. 13045.

Garnet Winiford Basham

ONEONTA — Garnet Winiford Basham, 88, of Oneonta, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born on June 4, 1914, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Clyde and Garnet Sophia (Smith) Pitcher.

She married Clyde Basham on Aug. 12, 1934, in Marion, Iowa.

Mrs. Basham was a resident of the Robynwood Home for Adults in Oneonta.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Virginia 'Ruth' Bryceland

ONEONTA — Graveside committal services for Virginia "Ruth" Bryceland will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at 11 a.m. in Mt. Calvary in Emmons.

Mrs. Bryceland passed away on Dec. 18, 2002, at the Albany Medical Center.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Alton M. Benedict

ONEONTA — A graveside committal service for Alton M. Benedict, who passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2003, at 10 a.m. in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor of the Franklin United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Frederick Jubar

OTEGO — Graveside committal services for Frederick Jubar, who died Dec. 12, 2002, will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Bundy Cemetery in Otego.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta.

John Henry Barry

STAMFORD — Committal services for John Henry Barry, who passed away March 1, 2003, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2003, at Grand Gorge Cemetery in Grand Gorge.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Margaret A. Black

NEW LISBON — Graveside committal services and burial for Mrs. Margaret A. Black, 92, formerly of New Lisbon, will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003, in Mount Vision Cemetery, with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating. Friends are invited to attend.
