Marjorie Darrah Hubler

ONEONTA — Marjorie Darrah Hubler (Grandma Marge), 93, of Oneonta, passed away peacefully at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford, on June 2, 2003. She had resided there for two months.

She was born Feb. 3, 1910, in Wilkes Barre, Pa., to Michael and Elsie (Boyle) Vaughn.

In 1937, she married Ross E. Darrah and they moved to Oneonta in 1948. After Ross retired from the D&H Railroad, Marge nursed him through Lou Gehrig's disease for four years until his death in 1959. On Aug. 19, 1967, she married Graham (Grip) Hubler Sr. Both the Darrah and the Hubler families had been close family friends for years. Marjorie and Grip enjoyed traveling in the United States and Europe, during their 25 years of marriage until his death in 1992. In her 80's she traveled to Alaska and Nova Scotia.

She was a mother, homemaker and friend to all. She worked at Oneonta State as a housekeeper in the Home Ec. Building from 1963 until her retirement in 1972. Over the years she made numerous wedding cakes and was known as "Double Batch Marge" for all she made and gave away.

She enjoyed crocheting and made over 100 afghans for family and friends; each one a unique work of art filled with love. Marge also took thousands of pictures to share with family and friends.

Marge was a member of Elm Park United Methodist Church for 55 years. In 1980, she was chosen to be the first woman Lay Leader. Serving in that capacity gave her great joy and she often said she felt close to God.

Marge knew everyone should have a grandma. If she saw children that needed one, she "adopted" them. Among them are Sarah and Amy Lilly, David and Kim Wilson, Kim, Karen and Kathy Stoeger.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Kathy Darrah of Norwich, and Larry and D.J. Hubler of Canandaigua. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Stacy Darrah, Chad and Tracy Darrah, Karin and Matt Meyer, Seth Darrah and fiance, Tanya, Randy and Denise Hubler, Chip and Lisa Hubler; her great-grandchildren who loved their Nana, Trevor and Blake Darrah, Megan, Jarod and Caleb Meyer, Katy and Craig Hubler, Ryan and Maren Hubler and Hannah; and many nieces, nephews, cousins; and a legion of friends.

Marge was predeceased by her parents; her son, Wayne Darrah; her sister, Elsie and brothers, Ray, Tom, Ed and Michael.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 6, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Calling hours will be offered on Thursday, June 5, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to the Oneonta Plains Cemetery Association, 162 County Highway 58, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Marjorie Darrah Hubler.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Beatrice L. Standish

EDMESTON — Beatrice L. Standish, 85, of Edmeston died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at her home in Edmeston.

She was born May 6, 1918, in West Exeter, the daughter of O. Lee and Emeline (Tripp) Wright.

She married Lysle E. Standish on March 5, 1942. He predeceased her on April 19, 1945.

Bea graduated from West Winfield Central School, the Class of 1938, she later graduated from Austin Beauty School, Albany, in 1945.

Bea was a member of the United Methodist Church in Edmeston. She was a charter member of the Wharton Valley American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 1311. She served as President to the Auxiliary Post No. 1311, and had also been past President of the County's American Legion Auxiliary.

Bea was a social person enjoying the camaraderie of legion friends, church members, distant and local neighbors.

After her retirement from owning and operating her Beauty Salon, she had more time to enjoy her crafts, flowers, baking and cooking. Several years ago she joined the Edmeston Tea Circle which is a local outreach society.

Bea is survived her son and his wife, Ed and Kathy Standish of Edmeston; her grandchildren, Rob L. Standish and his wife, Shawna of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Ginger L. Standish of Boston, Mass.; her sister-in-law, Evalina Palmer of Brooksville, Fla.; and her nephew, Richard Wright of Burlington Flats.

Bea was predeceased by her brother, William Wright.

A memorial service will be held on Friday June 6, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Edmeston United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lorraine Zimmerman officiating. Calling hours will be held from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the service.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bea's memory to the Edmeston Emergency Squad, envelopes will be available at the church.

Elsie G. Goodrich

WALTON — Elsie G. Goodrich, 94, formerly of Walton, passed away Saturday morning, May 31, 2003, at the home of her granddaughter, Christina Butler of Peoria, Ariz., after a long illness.

Mrs. Goodrich was born in Beerston, the daughter, one of 16 children, of Theron and Cecelia Kettle Wood.

On Oct. 22, 1924, she married Bruce Goodrich. He died on July 1, 1983.

She was a homemaker, who took pride in caring for her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Martha and Richard Bartlett of Unadilla, and Celia and Percy Wood of Iverness, Fla.; three sons, Harland and Arvella Goodrich of Walton, Laverne and Marylou Goodrich of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Jerry and Beverly Goodrich of Masonville; two sisters, Harriet Hanyon of Owego, and Dorothy Washburn of California; and one brother, Leland Wood of Walton; 21 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two daughters, Hilda Kinsey and Vernice Cox; and 12 brothers and sisters.

Friends may call Friday, June 6, 2003, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Carl M. Butler, pastor of the Pines Brook Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Goodrich's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes for contributions are available at the funeral home.

Kenneth Anthony Kozlowski

HARPERSFIELD — Kenneth Anthony Kozlowski, 55, a resident of Harpersfield for the past 15 years, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, near his home in the town of Harpersfield.

Born in Yonkers on July 17, 1947, the son of Edward and Louise Kozlowski.

Ken or "Koz" as he was known by his friends, spent his early years in Yonkers, and finished high school and trade school there.

He worked for a government contractor assembling wiring harnesses for C-5A aircraft and other aircraft types, but had a wide interest in technical things such as electronics, motorcycle and automobile mechanics, radio control model aircraft and HAM and CB radio. His interest in handguns, rifles and shotguns developed in recent years when he moved to Middleburgh.

After moving to Harpersfield in 1988, Ken, became a charter member of the Oneonta R/C Flyers, and helped establish and maintain the club field at F&F Airpark in the Town of Oneonta. He was a very active member of the club, building and flying many beautifully made R/C aircraft until his health declined and his enthusiasm waned. Always a colorful and knowledgeable conversationalist Ken will be missed by his fellow club members and close friends.

Ken Kozlowski is survived by his brother, Dennis; the love of his life, Donna Medon Serricchio; and good friend, Tony.

Memorial services will be conducted at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 40 Cornell Ave., in Hobart on Monday, June 9, 2003, at 11:30 a.m., with Pastor Waylon Bray officiating. His ashes will be scattered at the former F&F Airpark, now Fortin Park near Oneonta, according to his wishes.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Joan Mottl

ONEONTA — Joan Mottl, 81, formerly of Franklin Mountain, Oneonta, passed away on Monday, June 2, 2003, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

Joan was born Aug. 16, 1921, in Villa Grove, Ill., the daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth (Boutcher) Frey.

She had lived on Long Island prior to moving to Franklin Mountain in the early 1960s and was employed for a number of years as a seamstress for the Oneonta Dress Company.

At Joan's request there will be no funeral services or calling hours.

Please consider memorial contributions to an SPCA of your choice or to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.

Arthur Brundage Sr.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A memorial graveside service for Mr. Arthur Brundage Sr., 95, formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., who passed away Feb. 5, 2003, in Scottsdale, Ariz., will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2003, at Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneida Street, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, officiating. Friends and family are invited.

Donald J. Sutton

SCHENEVUS — The committal service for Donald J. Sutton, 63, who died Jan. 3, 2003, will be held at the Maryland Cemetery, Saturday, June 7, 2003, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas Snyder officiating. Full military honors will be presented by the Schenevus VFW Post 2752.

Arrangements are with the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Anthony V. Palmer

SCHENEVUS — The committal service for Anthony V. Palmer, 91, who died Feb. 24, 2003, will be held at the Schenevus Cemetery, Saturday, June 7, 2003, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Edward Golding officiating. Following the burial friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon at the Palmer residence, Main Street in Schenevus.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Philip P. Cannistra

DALLAS, Texas — Philip P. Cannistra, 49, of Dallas, Texas, died on June 1, 2003, in Dallas.

He was born June 17, 1953, in Oneonta, N.Y., the son of Thomas and Louise V. (Mathews) Cannistra.

He was a graduate of SUNY at Oneonta, was organist at St. Mary's Church in Oneonta in the late 1960s and early 1970s, he attended the New England Conservatory of Music and was a member of the Catholic Church in Dallas. He was an Insurance Executive for 20 years.

Survivors include five brothers, Thomas Cannistra of Cooperstown, N.Y., Robert Cannistra of Stony Point, N.C., Douglas Cannistra of Oneonta, David Cannistra of Binghamton, N.Y., and Ronald Stanton of Saloford, U.K.; two sisters, Maria Bard of Bedford, Mass., and Susan Klugh of Canyon Country, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be no public calling hours.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 6, 2003, at 11 a.m. in St. Thomas Church, Cherry Valley, N.Y., with the Rev. John Roos officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Margaret Moakler

COOPERSTOWN — Graveside services for Margaret Moakler, who died Dec. 25, 2002, will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2003, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Cemetery in Index, with Fr. John P. Rosson officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Irene C. Simonds

OTEGO — The committal service for Irene C. Simonds, 61, who died Feb. 20, 2003, in Oneonta, will be held Friday, June 6, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the Otsdawa Cemetery, with the Rev. Judy Thistle officiating.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Kenraid and Doris Shields

NEW LISBON — Graveside committal services for Kenraid and Doris Shields will be held in Hillington Cemetery, Morris, on Saturday, June 7, 2003, at 1 p.m.

Friends are invited back to the Shields' residence after the committal services.

Marilyn E. Michelin

KELLY CORNERS — Marilyn E. Michelin, 74, of Kelly Corners, completed her courageous battle with cancer, and Journey on Earth, surrounded by her family, June 5, 2003, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital in Margaretville.

She was born Sept. 19, 1928, in Yonkers, the daughter of Ralph E. Cook and Elizabeth Burlington.

She married Robert E. Michelin on Sept. 6, 1947, in Paterson, N.J. He died Sept. 9, 1985.

She was a homemaker, a member of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Margaretville, Sacred Heart Women's Society in Margaretville, and Bingo Buddies.

She is survived by three daughters, Cherryle M. Hawkes and her husband, Robert, Linda Stein and her husband, James, and Dody Pangburn; 10 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; two sisters, Helen Larsen and husband, Wes, and Mildred Sechny and husband, Steve; one brother, Ralph Cook and wife, Suzanne; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2003, at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell and the Rev. Wm. Gorman, as con-celebrants. Burial will be in Kelly Corners Cemetery, Kelly Corners.

In lieu of flowers, Marilyn has requested Masses be said. Memorials in her name may be made to the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Robert Gillespie Horton

EAST GUILFORD — Bob Horton, 82, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at his East Guilford home with hospice staff and family at his side.

He was born in New Suffolk on Long Island, on Dec. 22, 1920, the son of Gilbert and Helen (Gillespie) Horton.

He attended a three-room schoolhouse and due to a bad childhood accident graduated from high school in 1941.

He married Julia (Pine) Horton on Nov. 24, 1951, in Walton. She predeceased him in 1988. He was also predeceased by a brother, Gib, who was in the Marine Air Corps and died in a plane crash in 1944.

Bob had made his home in East Guilford, since 1965, and previous to that, had lived in Walton and Franklin Depot.

He had worked at the Scintilla-Bendix plant for 31 years, retiring in 1983. During his 20 years of retirement, he enjoyed gardening — especially daylilies and old-fashioned roses and watching the birds and other wildlife.

Bob will be remembered for his sense of humor, good cheer, and determination. He seldom let his illness get him down and did not worry about the future.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Ed Pabst, Guilford. And his elderly furry companion "Sadie," whom he adopted when her former owner died.

Sincere thanks are extended to his home health-care provider Renee, and the staff of the oncology unit at Bassett including Dr. Eric Bravin and Linda Karl.

A memorial service will be on Sunday, June 8, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the East Guilford Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Allen Presby officiating.

Mr. Horton was cremated in Earlville and will be interred in the family plot at the Walton Cemetery.

Gifts may be directed to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 East Main St., Sidney, or to a special fund to plant a tree in his memory at the cemetery.

Arrangements were by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel of Sidney.

Barbara A. Brown

ONEONTA — Barbara A. Brown, 71 years of age, of Oneonta lost her battle with cancer, Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born March 26, 1932, in Oneonta, the daughter of Claude B. and Helen (Delong) Safford.

She married Arthur Bensen Brown on March 1, 1954, in Oneonta. Mr. Brown predeceased her on July 21, 1993.

Barbara was a lifelong area resident, attending Mitchell Street School, where Nader Towers is now located. She resided in Nader Towers since 1993.

She tended bar at the Oneonta Moose Club and also at the V.F.W. Barbara was the Past President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Elbert N. Patten Post No. 1206 V.F.W.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles and was a huge NASCAR fan in which her favorite driver was the late Dale Earnhardt. The highlight of Barbara's life was in October 1998, traveling cross country with her good friend, Louise.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and K. Leigh Prostak of Wells Bridge; three grandchildren, Katelyn Knapp, Richard Knapp III, and Edward "AJ" Prostak, all of Wells Bridge; two sisters, Joan and William Roberts of Otego, and Dorothy Wilber of Wells Bridge; one niece and two nephews; as well as dear friends, Sophie and Buck Miller of Otego.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents and her husband.

As per request of Barbara, contributions and flowers may be sent to the home of her daughter, Barbara Prostak, 152 County Highway 4, Wells Bridge, NY 13859, where there will be a get-together for family and friends to celebrate Barbara's life at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Eugene J. Stroppel

DeLANCEY — Eugene J. Stroppel, 74, of DeLancey died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born on Oct. 3, 1928, in Glen Cove on Long Island, the son of Fred and Helen Marie (O'Brien) Stroppel.

He was married 47 years to his wife, Ann Marie Cerullo.

Eugene worked for many years in Glen Cove, as a Postal Carrier for the USPS. A frequent visitor to the Delaware County area, he and his wife moved to DeLancey in October of 1985.

An avid hunter, fisher and outdoorsman, Eugene was a member of the Tremperskill Rod and Gun Club. He was also a regular at Papa's Diner in Walton. He enjoyed flying radio controlled airplanes and was also a dog lover.

He was predeceased by one brother, Fred Stroppel; and two sisters, Mary Louise Pascucci and Kathryn Stroppel.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Marie Stroppel, of DeLancey; a daughter, Gail and Ken Boylan, and their children, Danielle and Brian of Bear, Del.; a son, Bill and Carol Stroppel, and their daughter, Diana of Santa Cruz, Calif.; a daughter, Helen Stroppel and her children, Morgan and Keith of DeLancey; one sister, Helen Lazzaro of Katonah: one brother, Jack and Marie Stroppel of Glen Cove; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to greet the family on Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi, from 1 to 2 p.m. Memorial services for Eugene will follow immediately at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral, Home, Delhi.
