Viola V. Ogborn

STAMFORD — Viola V. Ogborn, 90, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2003, at Robinson Terrace Skilled Nursing Facility in Stamford, N.Y.

Viola was born July 15, 1912, in Simpson, W. Va., the daughter of Commodore and Laura Teter.

On May 1, 1936, she married Ronald A. Ogborn, who passed away on Jan. 30, 1994. Together they ran and operated Ogborn's General Store in West Harpersfield, N.Y., until retiring in 1975.

Viola was a member of the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church.

She will always be remembered as a loving and caring person and will be greatly missed by many, especially her family.

Her children and their spouses, Nancy and Richard Coager of Saugerties, Beverly and Fred Jacobs of Jefferson, David and Betty Ogborn of West Harpersfield and Donald and Joan Ogborn of Dexter, N.Y., survive her.

Her grandchildren, Michael Coager and wife, Laura; Karl Ogborn and wife, Karen; Brian Ogborn and wife, Karen; Donald Ogborn Jr.; Daniel Ogborn and wife, Laurie; and Dale Ogborn; her 14 great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren; two half sisters, Wilma Petreau and Carol Cossette of Titusville, Fla., also survive her; as well as three stepsisters, Judy Orbacz and Irma Ruston of Gilbertsville and Ruth Waterman of Delhi, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.

A son, Howard Teter; her sister Gladys Blake and her brothers, Vane, Oren, Dale and Donald Teter and stepsister Lois Carmody predeceased Viola.

Calling hours will be on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, N.Y.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, June 9, at 2 p.m. in North Kortright Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Carol Wilson officiating.

Burial will follow the service at the North Kortright Cemetery, North Kortright, N.Y.

Contributions in her memory may be made to North Kortright Cemetery Association, c/o Donald Kerr, 115 Underpass Rd., Davenport, NY 13750.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, N.Y.

Marcella O. Kendrick

SIDNEY — Marcella O. Kendrick, 81, of Sidney, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2003, at the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford, N.Y.

She was born March 14, 1922, daughter of the late William and Anne (Whalen) Orton in Sharon, Conn.

Marcella attended St. Peters School of Nursing in Albany, N.Y., then worked for St. Peters Hospital as a Registered Nurse until 1948.

She married Edward J. Kendrick on June 6, 1947, in Sidney.

She is survived by her husband, Edward J. Kendrick, of Oxford; four sons and daughters-in-law, Edward T. and Katie Kendrick of Carmel, N.Y., Kevin D. and Shannon Kendrick of Nashville, Tenn., Mark A. and Lorrie Kendrick of Sidney and Sean J. Kendrick of Sidney; two grandsons, James R. and Mark R. Kendrick; and one great-granddaughter, Cleo Marcella Kendrick.

She was also predeceased by a brother, David E. Orton.

Friends may call Monday. The family will be in attendance at 12:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 9, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 1:30 p.m.

The Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, Pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney, will officiate.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the NYS Veterans Home, 4211 State Highway 220, Oxford, NY 13830.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Betty Jardine Chesser

ONEONTA — Betty Jardine Chesser, 86, of St. James Manor, Oneonta, passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2003, in the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

Betty was born on Aug. 22, 1916, in Barrow-in-Furness, England, the daughter of John and Agnes (Williams) Jardine.

She came to this country with her parents in 1920, and spent most of her life in the Albany and Delmar area. She lived 60 years on Harrison Avenue in Delmar, where she raised her three sons.

She is survived by her sons and their wives, John and Marcy Chesser of Yorktown Heights, Roger and Christiane Chesser of Kanata, Ontario, Canada, and Douglas (she often called him John Roger Douglas) and Carol Chesser of Oneonta; her eight grandchildren, Whitney Ann Chesser, Pamela Chesser, Alexander Chesser, Ginger Chesser Volpe, Geoffrey Chesser, Christine Chesser, David Chesser and Christopher Chesser.

Also surviving is one great-grandson, Austin John Carpenteri.

Private funeral arrangements are being made for the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions in Betty's name may be made to the benefit of St. James Manor.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Bertha M. Ward

CHERRY VALLEY — Graveside and Rebekha services for the celebration of the life of Mrs. Bertha M. Ward, 86, who passed away at her home on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2003, in the Cherry Valley Cemetery with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating.

Committal and burial will follow.

The family requests no floral arrangements. Instead contributions in Mrs. Ward's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad.

The family expresses their gratitude and appreciation to the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad for their loving care and for all those they assist.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Ruth Trask

WALTON — Ruth Trask, 97, formerly of Walton passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at the home of her daughter Phyllis Schiippel of New Milford, Pa.

She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Schiippel of New Milford, Pa., and Linda Trask of Walton, N.Y., one son, Leon Trask of Walton; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted Saturday, June 7, at 11 a.m. from the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton with the Rev Mark Stento officiating.

A calling hour will immediately precede the service.

Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Paul M. Howland

SIDNEY — Paul M. Howland, 42, of 61 East Main St., Sidney, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 7, 2003, at The Hospital, Sidney, after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig Disease).

He was born Jan. 29, 1961, at The Hospital, Sidney, to John and Jocelyn Howland. Paul grew up in Sidney and graduated from Sidney High in the Class of 1980.

He worked at Amphenol for more than 20 years in various departments before going on disability in June 2002 because of his disease.

Paul enjoyed bowling, golfing and deer hunting. He also enjoyed NASCAR racing and riding his motorcycle.

He will be remembered by many for his sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his dear friend and companion, his dog, Good Time, who went everywhere in his yellow Jeep with him.

He is survived by his father, John Howland, Sidney; four sisters, Nancy Livingston and husband, Randy, of Unadilla, Sara Church and husband, Randy, of Bainbridge, Marilyn Halloran and husband, Kevin, of Yuma, Ariz., and Carolyn Howard of Hamden; two nieces, Tammy Stone and husband, Timothy, of Kitzingen, Germany, and Amanda Church of Bainbridge; five nephews, Scott Finch of Massachusetts, John Paul and Thomas Halloran, Yuma, Ariz., and Christopher and Kenny Howard of Delhi; three great-nephews, Scott Finch of Albany, Nathen Stone of Kitzingen, Germany, and Jered Finch of Massachusetts; two great-nieces, Kaylee Finch of Massachusetts and Sierra Stone of Kitzingen, Germany; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is predeceased by his mother, Jocelyn Howland; and a nephew, Roger Finch Jr.

Friends may call Thursday, June 12, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2003, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Brian Cutting, pastor of the Unadilla Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

The family would like to invite friends to the Sidney American Legion on Union Street on Friday at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Paul's name to either the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the ALS Foundation, St. Peters Hospital, 315 South Manning Blvd., Albany, 12208.

Roland C. Rabeler

DELHI — Roland Charles Rabeler, 72, of Delhi, passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2003, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

He was born Oct. 22, 1930, in Leigh, Neb., the son of Henry and Eunice (Holm) Rabeler.

On Dec. 11, 1955, he married Mary Wylla Gray in Delhi, at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

A lifelong area resident, he was employed as a stationary engineer at SUNY Delhi for 25 years and during the late 1980s was head teller at Delaware National Bank.

Mr. Rabeler was an active member of the Delhi Fire Department and Delhi Community Band. He served on a committee for the Delhi College Golf Course, was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, United Initiatory of Delhi and the Delhi Town Zoning Board of Appeals.

A very clever and handy person, he could fix anything.

He was devoted to his family and especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife, M. Wylla Rabeler of Delhi; a son, Scott Rabeler, and his children, Katrina and Zachary Rabeler, of Oneonta; a daughter, Lori Rabeler and her husband, Walter Shanahan, and their daughter, Colleen Shanahan of Princeton, Mass.; one brother, Gordon Rabeler, New City; two sisters, Hilda Griessel of Altamont and Dolores Palmer of Queensbury; and a sister-in-law, Tillie Rabeler of Delhi; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Three brothers, Henry Rabeler, Martin Rabeler and Paul Rabeler; and a sister, Claire Russell, predeceased him.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at United Ministry of Delhi, with the Rev. Lisa Heckman and the Rev. Jeff Staples officiating. Calling hours will be at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. preceding the service on Wednesday. Burial will take place at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Immediately following the committal service a reception will be held at the Delhi Fire Hall.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Delhi Fire Department New Truck Fund, P.O. Box 405, Delhi, N.Y. 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Marie E. Churchill

STAMFORD — Marie Elizabeth (Ackerley) Churchill, 68, of Churchill Road, went home to be with her Lord on June 5, 2003, after a long and courageous battle with non-smokers lung and bone cancer.

Marie was born in Hobart on June 26, 1934, the daughter of Hugh and Esther (Hillis) Ackerley. She moved to Charlotteville at 14 and graduated from Charlotte Valley Central School in 1953.

Marie moved to Stamford in 1955, to the home of Dr. S.P. Dansky, where she was a caregiver for Viola and a veterinarian assistant for Doc.

On May 10, 1958, she was married to Duane Churchill of Stamford, and they lived on the Churchill farm until 1971. They then moved to their present home on Churchill Road in 1972.

Marie worked as a health aide at the South Kortright Adult Rest Home for 13 1/2 years., then for several years at various homes in the Stamford, Hobart, South Kortright, Charlotteville, Bloomville, Jefferson and Gilboa areas, until ill health forced her to retire in January 2002.

Marie loved to take walks, read and write letters to her pen-pals, 1953 classmates, friends and relatives.

Marie is survived by her husband, Duane M. Churchill, of 45 years, of Stamford; her children and their spouses, a daughter, Diane and David Dick of Hillsboro, N.H.; three sons, Dan and Liz Churchill of Ellicott City, Md., Doug and Deb Churchill of Rochester, and Andy Churchill and his fiance, Ellie Heannings, and her daughters, Ashley, Marissa and Alexis of Andes; her grandchildren, Ben and Sam Dick, Marybeth and Maggie Bornhorst, and Brian and Stephen Churchill; her mother, Esther Ackerley of Robinson Terrace in Stamford; and one brother, John and Doris Ackerley of Charlotteville; and her lifelong friend, Elsie Mitchell of Charlotteville; and several nieces, nephews and many cousins.

She was predeceased by her father, Hugh Ackerley, in 1983.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at the Jefferson United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Frank Adams, pastor of the Jefferson United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to the American Lung Association.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Charles W. Beecher

WALTON — Charles W. Beecher, 89, of Walton, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2003, in the Binghamton General Hospital, as the result of a motor vehicle accident.

Mr. Beecher was born at Long Eddy, in the town of Hancock on Oct. 31, 1913, the son of William and Ruth Welton Beecher.

He was married to the former Helen Bishop, who died in 1988.

He was a maintenance worker at Bear Springs Mountain, for the former state Department of Conservation.

He is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Carrie McClenon, Jennie Northrup and Freda McClenon.

Friends may call at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2003, where services will be held at 11 a.m., with the Rev. William Robertson, pastor of the Plymouth Community Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Charlie's memory to the Walton Emergency Squad. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Marcella Kendrick

SIDNEY — Marcella O. Kendrick, 81, of Sidney, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2003, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

She was born March 14, 1922, in Sharon, Conn., to the late William and Anne (Whalen) Orton.

Raised on the Riverlea dairy farm in Sidney, Marcella attended the Gillett District one-room school house and graduated from Sidney High School in 1938. Marcella went on to graduate from St. Peters Nursing School in Albany, where she achieved her RN and later worked as night supervisor.

She married Edward J. Kendrick of Albany on June 6, 1947, in Sidney.

Marcella was a loving wife and mother, who enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Edward J. Kendrick, of Oxford; four sons and daughters-in-law, Edward T. and Katie Kendrick of Carmel, Kevin D. and Shannon Kendrick of Nashville, Tenn., Mark A. and Lorri Kendrick of Sidney, and Sean J. Kendrick of Sidney; two grandsons, James R. and Mark R. Kendrick; and one great-granddaughter, Cleo Marcella Kendrick.

She was predeceased by a brother, David E. Orton.

Friends may call today. The family will be in attendance at 12:30 p.m. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney, officiating.

James H. Yager

GILBERTSVILLE — James Harold Yager, 80, of Gilbertsville, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at his home.

He was born in Schenevus on Oct. 18, 1922, the son of Glen and Margaret (McCloskey) Yager.

He was married to Kathryn Camp on June 29, 1946, in Oneonta. They had been married for nearly 57 years.

He had been employed for NYSEG of Oneonta, retiring in 1983, after 32 years of service to the company.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion Post No. 1339 of Gilbertsville and was a past commander.

He was a former member of the Gilbertsville Fire Department and had served as president. He also had served his community as a Gilbertsville village trustee and was a member and former deacon of the First Baptist Church of Gilbertsville.

James is survived by his wife, Kathryn, of Gilbertsville; his son, Kevin Yager and wife, Jinny, of Brattleboro, Vt.; a daughter-in-law, Robin Yager of Willet; as well as his grandchildren, Jill, Sandra, Eric and Sara Yager; and his great-grandchildren, Kylie, Brendan and Emma Yager.

A son, Stephen Yager, predeceased him.

Calling hours will be at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, on Tuesday, June 10, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at the First Baptist Church of Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Randolph Palada officiating. Committal services and burial will follow at the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the First Baptist Church of Gilbertsville in his memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
