Shirley A. VanDeusen

DAVENPORT — Shirley A. VanDeusen, 83, of Davenport died June 8, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 1, 1919, in East Meredith, to Fred I. and Anna Hanford Adair.

Shirley graduated from Oneonta High School in 1936. She received her BS degree in Education from Hartwick College in 1940, and went on to do graduate work at Albany State Teachers College.

On Aug. 20, 1942, she and Walter M. VanDeusen were married in East Meredith. He predeceased her on July 31, 1997, after nearly 55 years of marriage.

Shirley taught at Charlotte Valley Central School for 20 years and then taught at Oneonta Consolidated Schools in the Junior and Senior High levels for 15 years, retiring in 1977.

Shirley was a member of the Davenport Presbyterian Church, New York State Teachers Association, Otsego County Retired Teachers Association, Davenport Rebekah Lodge (former Noble Grand), Davenport Grange, Business and Professional Women's Club of Oneonta, and the Delaware County Historical Society.

Besides her career activities, Shirley enjoyed working crossword puzzles, cross stitch work, knitting and crocheting.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Charles VanDeusen of Oneonta, and Walter VanDeusen of Davenport; daughter-in-law, Linda VanDeusen of Oneonta; four grandsons, Joseph, Bryan, Matthew and Alex VanDeusen; and three great-grandchildren, Stephanie, John and Tyler VanDeusen.

She was predeceased by her husband, parents, and two brothers, Maurice Hanford Adair and Gordon Adair.

The family will receive friends at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2003.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Shirley A. VanDeusen will be conducted at the East Meredith location of Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church at 10 a.m. Friday. Interment will be in Davenport Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in Shirley's honor to the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 184, Davenport, N.Y. 13750.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Phyllis Moore Pickens

ONEONTA — Phyllis Moore Pickens, 91, of Oneonta passed away Sunday, June 8, 2003, in A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born May 11, 1912, in Oneonta, the daughter of Joel and Grace (Dye) Munson.

She was predeceased by her first and second husbands, Marsden Moore and Earl Pickens.

Phyllis was a graduate of Oneonta High School Class of 1931.

She and her late husband, Marsden Moore, owned and operated a dairy farm in Bainbridge, Mar-PHyL Farms, raising purebred Holsteins until 1960. They then moved to Mallory Corners in Gilbertsville, and continued farming until Mr. Moore's death in 1965. She then moved into the village of Gilbertsville and drove a school bus for Gilbertsville Central School.

She was a member of the Eastern Star, Pomona Grange, WRC, all of Gilbertsville.

Phyllis is survived by her sons and a daughter-in-law, Howard and Regina Moore of Unadilla, and Calvin M. Moore of Albany; her daughters and sons-in-law, Laurani and Paul Luft of Fonda, Marguerite and Mark Hoffman of Englewood, Fla., Sylvia Rosenfeld of Christiansburg, Va., and Jeanette and Dan Piquet of St. Louis, Mo. She is also survived by her sister, Doris Cushman of Sacramento, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Doris Munson of Chenango Bridge; also 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Pamela Lynn Luft; and a grandson, David Howard Moore.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 13, 2003, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church, Unadilla, officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Thursday, June 12, 2003, from 5 to 7 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main Street., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Vern E. Walley Jr.

ONEONTA — Family and friends are invited to a memorial service for Vern E. Walley Jr., 57, at noon, Saturday, June 14, 2003, at his home at 393 Swart Hollow Road, Oneonta. Majs. Thomas and Kathleen Aplin of The Salvation Army will officiate.

Mr. Walley died May 27, 2003.

Edward P. Hogan

SIDNEY — Edward P. Hogan, 13 Sunset Ave., Sidney, was born April 22, 1925, in Johnson City, to Edward M. and Clara Trevithick Hogan, passed away Monday, June 9, 2003, in Sidney.

Ed is survived by his wife, Ellen (Mertz), of 50 years (Aug. 29, 2003.) He is also survived by two sons, Michael and wife, Lorie of Merrimack, N.H., Peter and wife, Barbara of Chenango Forks; five daughters, Colleen and husband, Christopher Wear of Charlotte, N.C., Patricia and husband, James Balla of Liverpool, Theresa and husband, Richard Boyle of Syracuse, Mary and husband, Terry Nicolini of Syracuse, and Jennifer and husband, Jeremy Bakeman of Johnson City. He is also survived by grandchildren, Kiersten (Wear) and husband, Scott Talbot, Kimberly Balla, Sean, Kelly and Taylor Hogan, Richard and Brian Boyle, Katie and Amy Hogan, Melissa, Michael and Ashleigh Nicolini, and Daniel ("Shortie") Bakeman. In addition, he is survived by a brother, Robert and his wife, Doris, formerly of Johnson City, and now of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Martha Palmer of Williamsville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ed graduated from Johnson City High School and Clarkson College of Technology with a degree in engineering. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Air Force as a navigator with the 380th Bomb Group, 5th AF in the Pacific. His missions included the first fly-over after the bombing of Nagasaki. He earned several medals for his service to his country and was honorably discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant.

Ed retired April 1, 1983, as an engineering manager with Amphenol, where he worked for over 30 years. He was a past president and member of the Engineers Managers Club.

Along with his brother, Robert, Ed built the home in which his family was raised and he and Ellen still reside.

Ed was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 4937.

Ed will surely be missed by all of his family and friends.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, June 11, 2003, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel in Sidney. The funeral will be held Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney, at 11:30 a.m.

Jeanne H. Delello

BAINBRIDGE — Jeanne H. Delello, 82, of 23 South Main St., Bainbridge, passed away Monday evening, June 9, 2003, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.

She was born Feb. 27, 1921, in Bainbridge, the daughter of the late Fred and Cecile Ferris Hamlin.

Jeanne was a graduate of the Bainbridge High School and the Lowell School of Business, Binghamton.

On June 6, 1941, she married Frank A. Delello in Bainbridge.

From 1965 until her retirement in 1985, she was a secretary for the Bainbridge-Guilford Schools. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, and St. John's Church, Bainbridge.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Frank A. Delello, Bainbridge; son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Mary Delello, Winter Park, Fla.; daughter, Pamela Delello, Lakeland, Fla.; two grandchildren, Allison and Matthew Delello, Winter Park, Fla.; special friends, George and Carol Konkle, Franklin; and numerous other friends.

Memorial Mass will be held at noon, Friday, June 13, 2003, from the Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at the family's convenience in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with her family in attendance.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad, St. John's Church, Bainbridge or the Sacred Heart Church, Sidney.

Dale K. Murphy

CHADWICKS — Dale K. Murphy, beloved wife of Edward J. Murphy, went home to her Lord on June 9, 2003, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on Sept. 15, 1917, in Bradford, Pa., the daughter of the late Lyle and Lydia Cross Kinney. She graduated from Olean High School and Olean School of Business.

Her 62-year union with her husband began on Dec. 27, 1941, when they were married at St. Joseph's Church in West Winfield.

She was an active member of St. Anthony of Padua Church in Chadwicks, serving many years as a lector.

She, along with her husband, was very involved in the Village Elders where they served on many committees and enjoyed taking bus tours.

She enjoyed painting, photography, crafts, her pets, participating in choral presentations and gardening.

Dale will be remembered by her family and friends as a woman devoted to her church, family and community.

Dale is survived by her husband, Edward; her son, Terry and his wife, Mary of Mohawk; her daughter, Sharon and her husband, Don Oberriter of Fly Creek; her grandchildren, Andrew Oberriter of Fly Creek, Megan Oberriter of Olympic Village, Calif., Matthew Murphy and his wife, Samantha, of Mohawk; and her great-granddaughters, Caitlin and Angela Murphy of Mohawk. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law, James Murphy and his wife, Betty, and Robert Murphy and his wife, June, all of West Winfield; and sisters-in-law, Arlene Kinney of Allegheny, and Mary Crowe of Cassville; seven nieces and nephews; and her cherished friends, Bonnie and Bill Krawczyk of Alma, and Sally and Lee MacLeod of Hamburg.

Dale was predeceased by her brother, Earl Kinney; and two grandsons, Aric Oberriter and Shaun Murphy.

As Dale was a supporter of many charities, her family requests a donation to your favorite charity in lieu of flowers.

Her family gratefully acknowledges the care given Dale by the staff of Valley Health Services in Herkimer.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2003, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 13, 2003, at 12:15 p.m. from the J. Donald Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida St., Sauquoit, and 1 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Chadwicks, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Edward Hayes. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Clayville.

Grace E. Day Sisco

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. — Grace E. Day Sisco, 99, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., passed away Sunday, June 8, 2003 at the Stratford Court HealthCare, Palm Harbor, Fla.

She was born on Feb. 9, 1904, in Roxbury, N.Y., the daughter of Chauncey Morse and Anna Mae Dent.

She was predeceased by her first and second husbands, Louis Day and John Sisco.

Grace taught first grade at Martha B. Day Elementary School in Bloomingdale, N.J. She moved to Tarpon Springs, from Bloomingdale in 1979.

She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association in New Jersey. She attended the United Methodist Church in Tarpon Springs.

Grace is survived by one son, Gerald A. Day, Winter Haven, Fla.; one sister, Mary Hinkley, Grand Gorge, N.Y.; two brothers, Lindon Morse and Harrison Morse, both of Roxbury; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one son, Robert Day.

Calling hours are from 1 to 2 p.m., with funeral service at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2003, with the Rev. Charles Gockel, officiating, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury. Burial will be in Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Virginia E. Finch

MARGARETVILLE — Funeral and committal services for Virginia E. Finch, who died March 22, 2003, will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2003, at the Roxbury Cemetery in Roxbury, with the Rev. Joon Woo Lee, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Mary Janitz

OTEGO — Mary Janitz, 68, of Otego died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at her home.

She was born Feb. 22, 1935, Patterson, N.J., the daughter of Alexander and Philomina (Vassallo) Hart.

She married Paul Janitz. She was a homemaker and at one time served as a 4-H leader. She loved crocheting, playing bingo and card games.

She is deeply loved for the quality time she spent with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Paul; her children and spouses, Michael Janitz and Deborah of Oneonta, John Janitz and Suzanne of Mount Vision, Patrick Janitz and Sherry of Oak Ridge, N.J., Mary Rose Purdy and Jeffrey of Otego, Teresann Campbell and Richard of Mount Vision, Stephen Janitz and Rebekah of Hartwick; three brothers, Alexander Hart Jr., John Hart, and Edward Hart and his wife, Kathy; and a sister, Theresa Dougherty and husband, Joseph, all of New Jersey. Mary is also survived by 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as many dear friends.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2003, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2003, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Phillip Sell, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the Catskill Area Hospice in her memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Roger Sheckells Sr.

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Mr. Roger Dan Sheckells Sr., 81, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 9, 1921, in Oklahoma City, Okla., the son of Richard Thompson and Agnes (M.) (Wilcoxson) Sheckells.

On March 4, 1945, he married Sarah Ellen Dyckman in Peekskill. She survives.

He attended school in Oklahoma City, and received an honorary diploma at Springfield Central School.

He entered the United States Army in December 1942. He served on the U.S. Hospital Ship, the Algonquin and made 22 trips across the Atlantic and Mediterranean to bring wounded back to the U.S. He was awarded the following medals: four Bronze Service Stars for the Naples-Foggia Campaign, Southern France Campaign, Italian Campaign, German Campaign, a Good Conduct Medal, The American Theatre Ribbon, the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon, and two Overseas Service Bars. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Tech 5 in November 1945.

He worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Peekskill, and was a self-employed mason. He was the administrator of the Springfield Adult Home until his retirement.

He was a devoted husband and father.

Besides his wife of 59 years, Sarah Ellen Sheckells; he is survived by a son, Warren Charles and his wife, Linda Sheckells of Springfield Center, a son, Roger Dan Sheckells Jr. of Glendale, Calif.; a daughter, Ellen Kay Sheckells Effler of DeMoine, Iowa; grandchildren, Richard Vernon Sheckells and his wife, Karen of Rome, Debra Lyn Sheckells of Glendale, Calif., Victor Daniel Sheckells of DeMoine, Tiffany Rose Anderson of DeMoine; great-grandchildren, Daniel, Graig, and Derek Smith of Rome, Gabe Sheckells of Glendale; several nieces and nephews in Peekskill and Washington.

There will be no public calling hours.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2003, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Nancy L. Doyle

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Nancy L. Doyle, 65, of Jacksonville, Fla., died unexpectedly, Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at St. Lukes Hospital, Jacksonville, Fla.

She was born May 29, 1937, in Harpursville, N.Y., the daughter of the late Anthony and Hilda Smith Villecco.

On Sept. 21, 1957, she married Hugh Doyle.

Nancy was a longtime resident of Sidney, N.Y., until 1983, when she relocated to Jacksonville, with the Bendix Corporation. Nancy was a secretary for several years with the Bendix Corp. in Sidney, and retired from Unison Ind., as a secretary to the company's president.

She is survived by her husband, Hugh Doyle, Jacksonville, Fla.; two cousins, Harrison K. Smith, Sidney, and Laurel N. Schrull, Shelby, Ala.; three aunts, Lucille Rhodes, Port Crane, N.Y., Mary Ulbright, Binghamton, N.Y., and Congetta Weeks, Binghamton; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Arlene Doyle, Sidney; and several other cousins.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2003, from the United Methodist Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial gifts in Nancy's name may be directed to the United Methodist Church Music Fund, 12 Liberty St., Sidney, N.Y. 13838 or to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Beatrice Peckham

HANCOCK — Graveside services for Beatrice Lillian Peckham, who died Jan. 7, 2003, will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2003, by Lay Pastor Pamela Allen, officiating, at Riverview Cemetery, Hancock.

Hilda M. Wright

CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Hilda M. Wright, 86, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born Jan. 31, 1917, in Teaneck, N.J., the daughter of Guy H. and Florence May (Hecox) Oakes.

On Sept. 16, 1936, she married Clifford S. Wright in Cherry Valley.

A Cherry Valley resident for the past 22 years, she was a member of the United Methodist Church, Cherry Valley, and former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by a son, Clifford R. Wright of Cherry Valley; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Donald L. Wright in 1981; her husband in 1989; a brother, Walter G. Oakes in 1986; and a sister, Ruth E. Breadel in 2002.

There will be no public calling hours.

There will be a graveside service in the Roseboom Cemetery, Roseboom at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2003, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating. Burial will follow.

Contributions in Mrs. Wright's memory may be made to the United Methodist Church, Cherry Valley.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
