Betty E. Stelmach

CONWAY, S.C. — Betty E. (Beach) Stelmach of Conway, S.C., formerly of Sidney, N.Y., died June 12, 2003, after a short illness.

She was born Aug. 19, 1924, in Worcester, N.Y., the daughter of Jesse and Anna Beach.

She retired from Bendix-Allied Corp., after 25 years as an inspector.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward J.; a grandson; one sister; and two brothers.

Survivors include three children, Andrea Mayo, Whitney Point, N.Y., Edward J. Stelmach Jr., Conway, S.C., and Colleen Chrycy, Miami, Fla.; one sister, Virginia Davis, Binghamton, N.Y.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2003.

Henry R. Springett

MORRIS — Henry Richard Springett, 85, of Morris, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at his home in Morris.

He was born in Hubbardsville, on July 13, 1917, the son of John Merton Springett and Ethel (Larrabee) Springett.

He married Irene (Palmer) Springett in 1945, in Sidney. He was a lifelong area resident and had operated his own independent excavating business all of his adult life. Henry was an avid supporter of the local American Legion Post.

He is survived by his son, Alan Springett and wife, Karen of Bainbridge; a daughter, Barbara Gardner and husband, Stuart of North Carolina; his grandchildren, Joshua, Erica and Alaina Springett and Michael and Stuart Gardner Jr.; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Lyle Springett of Morris; and two sisters, Alta and Leona; as well as his special friends, Eddie and Lorraine Lynch of Bridgeport, Conn.

Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. Friday until 2 p.m. at which time the funeral service will be conducted at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating.

It is the family's request that in lieu of flowers, those who wish make contributions to the Morris Emergency Squad in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Beatrice J. Willems

BURLINGTON FLATS — Friends are invited to attend a graveside service for Beatrice J. Willems, who passed away Feb. 1, 2003. The service will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Burlington Flats Cemetery, with Pastor Jay Henderson officiating.

Emma Mae Davenport

SIDNEY — Emma Mae (Boynton) Davenport, 84, 10 Liberty St., Sidney, passed away peacefully at The Meadows in Cooperstown on Tuesday, June 24, 2003, after a brief illness.

Born Jan. 15, 1919, in Unadilla, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Pearl West Boynton.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Davenport.

Emma worked for many years at the Bendix (Amphenol) plant in Sidney. She subsequently was employed at The Hospital in Norwich, and retired many years ago from Simmons Precision in Norwich.

She is survived by four children, J. David (Karen) Ferris, Ithaca, Gerald A. (Sharron) Ferris, Oneonta, Susan A. Patterson, Sidney, and Jon W. (Linda) Ferris, Otego; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; one brother, James (Madeline) Silk, Worcester; and three sisters, Shirley Smith, Betty Smith and Joan (Everett) Gage, Schenectady.

Emma was predeceased by her son, Paul E. Ferris and a sister, Marjorie Olds.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2003, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Main Street, Sidney, with Phil Paddock, conducting a memorial service for the Congregation of the Jehovah Witness. Burial will immediately follow at the cemetery in South Plymouth.

Calling hours will be one hour preceding the services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Beverly Jane Tarver

MARYLAND — Beverly Jane Tarver, 70, of Maryland entered into peace with her companion Stewart E. VanDeusen on Thursday, June 26, 2003, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y.

She was born Feb. 24, 1933, in Oneonta, the daughter of Warren A. and Ruth (Lamb) Ferguson.

Beverly was a lifelong area resident. She was a cocktail waitress at the Oasis Motor Inn in Oneonta until 1980 where she then worked at the Oneonta Holiday Inn as a bartender until her retirement in 1995. Beverly enjoyed crocheting, knitting and reading. She also loved to travel and collect recipes. She was a caregiver for her parents, a homemaker and a wonderful mother to her son and stepchildren.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Joanna Tarver of Ben Lomond, Calif.; her mother, Ruth Ferguson Sweet of the Oneonta Nursing Home; her stepchildren and their spouses, Debbie and John Saunders of Oneonta, Tom VanDeusen of Oneonta, Stewart W. and Hiroko VanDeusen of Japan, Jim and Shari VanDeusen of Otego and Robert and Sandra VanDeusen of Utica; nine stepgrandchildren; and a cousin, Millie Parish of Oneonta.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Tuesday, July 1, at 11 a.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, officiating.

Calling hours will be held Monday, June 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family strongly wishes that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Milford Emergency Squad, Milford, NY 13807, for their valiant life-saving efforts, in loving memory of Beverly Jane Tarver.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Stewart E. VanDeusen

MARYLAND — Stewart E. VanDeusen, 82, of Maryland, entered into peace with his companion Beverly Tarver on Thursday, June 26, 2003, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y.

He was born Feb. 8, 1921, in Chaseville, N.Y., the son of William and Susie (Tompson) VanDeusen.

Stewart was a lifelong area resident. He served his country in the United States Air Force during WWII. Stewart worked at Scavo's Body Shop in Oneonta for 30 years, retiring in 1984. He was on several local bowling leagues in Oneonta and enjoyed woodworking.

He is survived by his five children, Debbie and John Saunders of Oneonta, Tom VanDeusen of Oneonta, Stewart W. and Hiroko VanDeusen of Japan, Jim and Shari VanDeusen of Otego and Robert and Sandra VanDeusen of Utica; nine grandchildren; a stepson, Dale Tarver and his wife, Joanna, of Ben Lomond, Calif.; a sister, Jean McMullen of Zephyrhills, Fla.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Stewart was predeceased by twin sons, Dennis and Daniel Van Deusen, and two brothers, Millard and Stephen VanDeusen.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Tuesday, July 1, at 11 a.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, officiating.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, June 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family strongly wishes that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Milford Emergency Squad, Milford, NY 13807, for their valiant life-saving efforts, in loving memory of Stewart E. VanDeusen.

Alma A. Olsen

UNADILLA — Alma A. Olsen, 95, of Unadilla, N.Y., passed away Friday, June 27, 2003, at the Gilmour Health Care Facility, Norwich, N.Y.

She was born April 19, 1908, in Smithville South, N.Y., the daughter of August and Margaretha Tatje.

She was married to Harold A. Olsen on May 29, 1929, in Hempstead, N.Y. Mr. Olsen predeceased her in 1974.

Alma and Harold owned and operated a farm in Otego, N.Y., and after a short residence in Fort Pierce, Fla., returned to settle in Youngs Station, N.Y. Upon retirement in 1965, they moved to Unadilla and spent their winters in Florida.

Alma was active in the Unadilla Rebekah Lodge for many years and served as both a member and officer. She was also a member of the Unadilla United Methodist Church and the Unadilla Senior Citizens.

She is survived by two children, her daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Frederick Jones of Youngs Station, and her son and daughter-in-law, Russ and Jayne Olsen of Santa Maria, Calif.; her six grandchildren, Mitchell and Karen Jones, Mark and Verna Jones, David and Karen Jones, Lori Olsen Gipson, Jeff Olsen and Leigh Olsen; seven great-grandchildren, John Jones, Matt Jones, Tim Jones, Dillon Jones, Kristen Jones, Lacey Olsen and Jone't Gipson; also several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her two brothers and four sisters.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday, June 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 1, at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla.

Private burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Mom will be held in loving memory by her family and will be missed by all. We draw comfort in knowing that she will once again be with Dad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

HOBART — Graveside services for Marguerite Hughes, who passed away Jan. 16, 2003, will be held today, Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart, at 11 a.m.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Edwin T. Donnelly

SCHUYLER LAKE — Edwin Thomas Donnelly, 59, of state Route 28, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, June 26, 2003, in his home.

He was born on March 10, 1944, in Cooperstown, son of the late William R. and Mary Kraham Donnelly.

A lifelong area resident, he was raised in Schuyler Lake and was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School, where he was an all-star quarterback. Upon the completion of high school he went on to Parson's College in Iowa, where he majored in physical education. He received his master's degree from Cortland State Teachers College.

For more than 25 years, Mr. Donnelly was a physical education teacher. He first taught in Phoenix, N.Y., and then for three years in the Richfield Springs Central School system. The majority of his teaching and coaching career was in the Frankfort-Schuyler School District, retiring in 1990.

For Ed Donnelly sports was not a way of life, but a fashion of living in sportsmanship and teaching. They were first and foremost to him.

Ed was a former amateur boxer who retired in 1968, when he was 24, with a record of 47 wins and six losses. He had won the Golden Gloves in Iowa in both 1964 and 1965, and was a runner-up in 1964 for the Olympic Boxing Team. In 1966, he was a runner-up in Troy and a semi-finalist in North Carolina. He had also won bouts in Oneonta and Saratoga.

During his amateur career he fought such notables as Hedgeman Lewis, Marvin Hagler and Billy Backus as well as being a sparring partner for Vito Antuofermo.

Ed had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Catholic life. He was a member of Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. A community-minded individual, he was a member of the Frankfort Kiwanis Club and a volunteer firefighter with the Frankfort Fire Department. He will be truly missed by many.

Surviving are two sons, Paul Donnelly of Clifton Park and Marc Donnelly of Schuyler; a daughter, Elaine Donnelly of Boulder, Colo.; two brothers, William Donnelly and James and his wife, Sharon, Donnelly, all of Schuyler Lake; four nephews, Bobby Donnelly, James Donnelly, William Donnelly and Thomas Donnelly; two nieces, Sharon Clancy and Laura Sheldon; several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents; a sister, Ann Marie Wilson, preceded him in death.

A funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. John Roos officiating. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs.

Dennison Crandall

BAINBRIDGE — Dennison Ralph Crandall, 78, of Bainbridge, passed away at the Veterans Home in Oxford, on Saturday morning, June 28, 2003.

A beloved husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa, he is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lenore "Lonny" Crandall; daughter and son-in-law, Connie and David Crosby of Reading, Pa.; son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Judy Crandall of Trumansburg; grandson and wife, Christopher and "Jess" Crosby; granddaughters, Kimberly, Carla and Caitlin Crandall; and great-granddaughter, Madison Crosby.

Denny retired from the Bendix Connector division of Allied-Signal Corp. after 42 years of service. As manager of employee services and public relations, he was known as "the Voice of Bendix" for the numerous articles he wrote and presentations he delivered on behalf of the company. During his tenure with the company, Denny was editor of the Scintillator and Bendix Today industrial publications. He also edited the book, "A Spark in the Dark," a compilation of memories from former employees, for the company's 75th anniversary.

A gifted writer and avid outdoorsman, Denny wrote hunting and fishing articles that were published in Field and Stream and Outdoor Life. His professional affiliations included the American Association of Industrial Editors, where he held the offices of president and vice president.

Denny served Christ, country and community. He was a member and served on the board of the Bainbridge United Methodist Church.

He participated in the European campaigns of World War II as a corporal and anti-aircraft gunner with the 386th Division of the Army.

He served on many area committees and boards, including the Board of Directors for SUNY Delhi, of which he was an alumnus, as well as the library and zoning boards in Bainbridge.

He supported fund-raising efforts for The Hospital in Sidney, and was a former Scoutmaster for Bainbridge Cub Scout Pack No. 52. He was a member of the Sidney B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 2175 and the Afton senior citizens organization. He was a past member of several civic organizations, including the Sidney Rotary Club and the Bainbridge Historical Society.

Friends and family may call at C.H. Landers Funeral Home in Sidney, on Tuesday, July 1, 2003. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. A service in remembrance of his life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, at the United Methodist Church in Bainbridge, with the interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Norwich, immediately following.

If you prefer, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Denny's memory to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

David G. Allen

NORTH FRANKLIN — Airman First Class David G. Allen of North Franklin died on Saturday, June 28, 2003, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in the town of Franklin.

He was born in Oneonta on Nov. 10, 1984, the son of David C. Allen and Jamie Cuozzo.

David was a 2002 graduate of Franklin Central School, where he played baseball.

He currently was serving with the U.S. Air Force National Guard in Glenville. He was recently reassigned to Biloxi, Miss., for continuing education and training.

Besides being an avid baseball player, David also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his parents, Jamie Cuozzo of Otego, and David C. and Jill Allen of North Franklin; his grandmothers, Joan Mannina of Oneonta and Colleen Carmody of Treadwell; a brother and two sisters, Brandan Garrison of Otego, and Ashley and Katie Allen of North Franklin; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, George and Helen Allen and Charles Mannina.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2003, in the Franklin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor, and Mr. Richard W. Sliter of the Aldrich Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

George O. Davis

RICHMONDVILLE — George O. Davis, 87, of Main Street, died Sunday, June 29, 2003, at Eden Park Health Care Center in Cobleskill, following a long illness.

Mr. Davis was born May 26, 1916, in Gilboa, the son of Arthur and Anna (Mattice) Davis. He was a 1934 graduate of Schenevus High School and had resided in Richmondville for 60 years.

Mr. Davis retired in 1978, after 37 years of employment in various managerial positions at General Electric in Schenectady.

He served as mayor for the village of Richmondville from 1961 to 1981, and also the former Richmondville Central School Board for 11 years.

Mr. Davis became an exempt member of the Richmondville Volunteer Fire Department after 25 years of service. He was active in the community, volunteering with the Boy Scouts in various capacities, as well as serving on the hospital board in Cobleskill from 1982 to 1988.

Mr. Davis was a member of the United Methodist Church of Richmondville, where he taught Sunday School, was a trustee of the board, and a lay leader.

Survivors include his wife, Velma (Scanlon) Davis, whom he married on May 30, 1937; a daughter, Linda J. Parsons of Quakertown, Pa.; four sons, George A. Davis of Zephyrhills, Fla., William E. Davis of Skaneateles, Richard K. Davis of Grapevine, Texas, and Garry O. Davis of Richmondville; a sister, Doris Winne of Oneida; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at the United Methodist Church, Main Street, Richmondville, with the Rev. Victor R. Zaccaro officiating. Burial will follow in Maryland Cemetery, Maryland.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, Main Street, Richmondville, N.Y. 12149 or the Richmondville Volunteer Fire Department, Main Street, Richmondville, N.Y. 12149.
