Frances W. Matteson

MORRIS — Frances Woehrle Matteson, 84, of Morris, N.Y., and West Laurens, N.Y., died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Fox Hospital in Oneonta, N.Y.

She was born Jan. 23, 1919, in Roscoe, N.Y., the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Bauer) Woehrle. She graduated from Roscoe High School in the Class of 1935 and attended Delhi College, graduating in 1937. Between 1937 and 1941, she was employed at Meridale Farms, where she worked in the main office and then for Delaware Company Co-op Creamery, again in the office.

She was married to Keith B. Matteson in 1941, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Delhi, N.Y. They bought a farm on Route 23 in West Laurens where they were successful farmers for 58 years, until Keith's death on Feb. 1, 1995.

In September 2002, Frances moved to Morris and lived there ever since.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, John and Pat Matteson of West Laurens, Jim and Diane Matteson of Madison, Conn., Joan and Allen Hanson of Amherst, Mass., her eight grandchildren, twins, Margaret Bunnell and husband John of Gilbertsville, Courtney Mackey and husband Jerry of West Oneonta, Jesse Hartley-Matteson and wife Amy of Mattapoisett, Mass., Abigail Matteson of West Laurens, Matt and Todd Matteson of Madison, Conn., Kristine Dion and husband Mike of Westfield, Mass., and David Hanson of Amherst, Mass.

She is also survived by her six great-grandchildren, McKenna Bunnell, Teagan and Aidan Mackey, Sam Hartley-Matteson and Nathan and Lindsey Dion.

Frances was a member of the Laurens Eastern Star for 53 years and served as secretary for 31 years. She was a 60-year member of the west Laurens Grange, a member of Zion Episcopal Church in Morris, and a member of the West Laurens Homemakers. She was an active member of those organizations throughout her lifetime.

Calling hours will be on Saturday, July 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Funeral services will be held at the Zion Episcopal Church Morris, on Sunday, July 6, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Witt officiating.

Committal services and internment will be in Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make contributions to the Episcopal Church General Fund, Morris, N.Y., 13808, or the Morris Village Library, Morris, N.Y., 13808, in her memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Philip C. Krause

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Philip C. Krause, 65, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2003, in his home after a short illness.

He was born on Aug. 4, 1937, in Syracuse, a son of the late Albert W. and Lillian S. (Kiefer) Krause. At the age of 3 his family moved to Richfield Springs, where he was raised and educated. He graduated from Richfield Springs High School. A United States Air Force M.P. veteran, he served from 1956 and was honorably discharged in 1960.

Upon his return to civilian life he went to work for General Electric in Schenectady. For a while, he worked in the post office in Schoharie, as well as helping on the farm. More recently he was employed with Wal-Mart before retiring in 2002.

Philip was a quiet, gentle, compassionate man. His family will remember him as a loving, caring and patient person who lived his life in the service of others. He had a strong love for the outdoors. Fishing was his pastime, and he took great pride in his garden.

He is survived by three devoted sisters, Blanche Rapenske and her husband Robert of Glen Rock, N.J., Lillian Cantwell and her husband William of Richfield Springs, and June A. Krause of Edmonds, Wash., and many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Albert W. Krause, on April 22, 1990.

Funeral services and interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Highland Rural Cemetery Association.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

J. Andrew ("Andy") Gracey

TODDSVILLE — A committal service and burial, for J. Andrew ("Andy") Gracey, 82, who died Jan. 7, 2003, will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, in Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown with Thomas Pullyblank, pastor of Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating.

Following the service, everyone is invited to a time of fellowship and refreshment at the Fly Creek United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Arnold Lee Richards

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mr. Arnold Lee Richards, 82, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2003, at his home.

He was born Dec. 23, 1920, in East Springfield, the son of Earl and Katherine (Butts) Richards Sr.

He was married to Cora Louise Cole (mother of his children) after her death he married Ida Root who also predeceased him.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944-1946.

He worked as a self-employed electrician and plumber. He was a member of the American Legion and Springfield Fire Department and past chief.

Survivors include a son, Timothy A. and his wife, Linda Richards of Springfield Center; a daughter, Patricia L. of Cherry Valley; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Earl and his wife, Carol Richards Jr. of Schenevus; three sisters, Virginia and her husband, Glenn Stocking of Springfield Center, Shirley Bemis of Pulaski, and Nancy and her husband, George Burnside of East Springfield.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in East Springfield, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Susan Burdsall.

There will be no public calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department, State Highway 20, East Springfield, N.Y. 13333.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Peggy J. Keyser

STAMFORD — Peggy J. Keyser, 73, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2003, following a long illness.

She was born July 12, 1929, in Breakabeen, the daughter of Abram and Anna (Lawyer) Keyser.

Peggy graduated from Middleburgh Central School in 1947.

She became a licensed practical nurse in 1949, and was employed as an LPN for more than 40 years at the Albany Medical Center.

Peggy was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Albany, and was also active as a Salvation Army volunteer in Albany. She was especially fond of cats.

When her health no longer allowed her to live by herself in March 2002, she moved to Robinson Terrace in Stamford, where she resided until her death. She became very close with her caregivers there, especially the nursing staff on the Bathgate unit.

Peggy never married, but is survived by her sister-in-law, Emma Keyser of Otego; seven nieces and nephews, Lewis Keyser and Lori Keyser of Otego, Lawrence "Joe" Keyser of Stamford, Cheryl Wilson of Birmingham, Ala., and Frank, Kathy and Larry Keyser of Oxnard, Calif.; nine great-nieces and nephews and several cousins.

In addition to her parents, Peggy was predeceased by two brothers, Frank and Robert; two sisters, Mary and June; and a niece, Janis.

According to Peggy's wishes there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2003, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, conducted by the Rev. Frank Adams. Burial will follow immediately at the Breakabeen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in her memory be made to the Robinson Terrace Quality of Life Fund, Harper Street, Stamford, N.Y. 12167.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Madeline Ericson

SUMMIT — Mrs. Madeline Ericson, 78, of Balwin Road, died Sunday, June 29, 2003, at her daughters residence in Middleburgh.

She was born April 8, 1925, in Gilboa, the daughter of Bartlett and Johnnye (Miles) Cooke.

Mrs. Ericson attended the former Mary Harden Baylor College in Belton, Texas, and then married Arthur L. Ericson Sr., Nov. 18, 1943. They moved to Summit in 1947 from Englewood, N.J.

She was a skilled seamstress with a keen interest in history. Mrs. Ericson was a member of the Schoharie County Historical Society and Order of the Eastern Star of the Masonic Lodge in Jefferson.

In 1977, when the New York Power Authority opened the Lansing Manor for tours, Mrs. Ericson was the first guide. She retired in the fall of 2002, due to her illness.

Mrs. Ericson was predeceased by her husband, Arthur L. Ericson Sr., who died in 1997; and a son, Arthur L. Ericson Jr., who died in 1966.

Survivors include two daughters, Sigrid Wood of Middleburgh, and Kathy Turner of Arlington, Va.; a sister, Elizabeth Wagner of Eager, Ariz.; 3 brothers, Maxwell Cooke and Rex Cooke, both of Odessa, Texas, and Jim Cooke of Arlington, Texas; two granddaughters, Erica Coons of Middleburgh, and Richelle Wood of Las Vegas, Nev.; three grandsons, Cameron, Hamilton, and Miles Turner, all of Arlington, Va.; and two great-grandchildren, Jim McBain and Cassidy Coons, both of Middleburgh.

A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2003, at the Palmer & Shaylor, Inc. Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh, with lay minister, David Houck. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, ALS Division, 1 Marcus Blvd., Suite 203, Albany, N.Y. 12205 or the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. Hope Foundation, 321 East Main St.. Suite 3, Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043.

Rolan Howard Mumford

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Rolan Howard (Rolie) Mumford, 85, of Melbourne, Fla., and formerly of Cooperstown, N.Y., died Thursday afternoon, April 10, 2003, at his home in Florida.

Rolie was born on Jan. 12, 1918, in Cooperstown, a son of Howard John and Hallie Jane (Van de Boe) Mumford.

He married Ruth A. Michaels on Aug. 22, 1943, in the Cooperstown United Methodist Church. Ruth died on May 19, 1996.

A graduate of the Cooperstown High School Class of 1936, Rolie was inducted into the United States Army in April of 1941. He proudly served his country during World War II in Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 112th Infantry and was involved with battles and campaigns in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland.

Upon his honorable discharge in October of 1945, he returned to Cooperstown, where he began his employment with the New York Telephone Company. Upon his retirement in 1977, he and his wife, Ruthie, moved to Florida, where they traveled in their trailer, played lots of golf and kept active as members of the Palmdale Presbyterian Church in Melbourne and the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Rolie was a member for over 50 years of Otsego Lodge No. 138, Free and Accepted Masons and the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown.

Cooperstown held a special place for Rolie and Ruthie, both in good and some sad times, wonderful friendships and, most of all, a sense of belonging and family.

Rolie will be deeply missed by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and John McGarry of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Lynn and Daniel O'Malley of Latham, N.Y.; three grandsons, Skip and Greg Piper of Albany, N.Y., and Jonathan McGarry of Latham; one sister, Mrs. Nina Clark of Hornell, N.Y.; one brother, Donald Mumford and his wife, Mary Lou of Oakfield, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Agnes Michaels of Vero Beach, Fla., and Kathryn Mumford of Otego, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his brother, Earl Mumford.

Rolie's peaceful entrance into heaven, to continue the journey with his beloved Ruthie, is cause for celebration, not tears; where the fairways are straight, the sand traps non-existent and every drive is an eagle!

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2003, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church with Rev. Herman Luben, retired Dutch Reformed minister, officiating.

During the memorial service, a Masonic Memorial Service will be conducted by Brothers of Otsego Lodge No. 138, F. & A. M.

Immediately following the memorial service, burial with full military honors will take place in the Middlefield Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Health First, Inc., 1900 Dairy Road, West Melbourne, FL 32904.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Zachary David Smith

RHINEBECK — Zachary David Smith, 27, passed away and moved to a peaceful place on Tuesday, June 10, 2003.

Zach was a graduate of Rhinebeck High School and attended Hartwick College in Oneonta. He had resided in Oneonta for the last three years and was employed at Gina's Cafe, where he had many wonderful friends.

While living in Oneonta, Zach spent countless hours at the Baseball Hall of Fame in nearby Cooperstown. Zach was a devoted fan of the New York Yankees. He loved spending time exploring in New York City and Boston.

He was born on March 21, 1976, at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston.

Zach is survived by his mother, Judith Anne Engels Smith, of Rhinebeck; a sister, Zara Katherine Smith of Boston; an uncle and aunt, Bill and Lori Engels, and their two daughters, Elissa and Adrienne in Hickory, N.C.; and by several other relatives in Ohio.

Private funeral services were held at the Good Shepherd Church, Rhinebeck, on June 14, 2003.

Memorial donations may be made in Zach's memory to the United Way of Dutchess County, P.O. Box 832, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 12602 or to another charity of your choice.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., Rhinebeck.

Richard Wiedeman

BERLIN, Mass. — Richard Wiedeman Sr., 88, of 133 Randall Road, died Friday, June 27, 2003, at U. Mass Memorial in Marlboro, Mass.

He was the son of the late Hazel (Ahl) and Herman Wiedeman.

Richard was born July 25, 1914, in Roxbury, N.Y., and married Lena Carnicelli, of Maryland, N.Y., in 1940.

For many years he was a resident of Oneonta, N.Y. He originated the first school bus route for East End of Oneonta and Cemetery Road; owned and operated the bus for the Oneonta public and St. Mary's schools. He was a World War II veteran, a machinist at Scintilla Mag. Div. of Bendix Corp., Sidney, Lockheed Aircraft training school in California, worked for the State Highway Department at Oneonta, and retired from St. Mark's School in Southborough, Mass., in 1977.

He was a long-time member of the Elks Lodge in Hudson, Mass.

During his youth, he was raised and worked on the family dairy farms in Roxbury and Jefferson, N.Y.

Known by his family and friends as "Woody," he enjoyed western music, traveling to Aruba and Florida, and outdoor life. Most of all he enjoyed his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by three sons, Richard with wife Patricia, of Marlboro, Mass., Douglas with wife Patricia of Berlin, Mass., Daniel with wife Kathleen of Berlin, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Kimberly, Michelle, Rebecca, Sarah, Matthew, Adam and Nicholas; three brothers, Merritt, Carl and Douglas, four sisters, Marilyn Jenkins, Vivian Hamwey, Virginia Butts and Wilhelmina Terebo.

His sons will always remember him as their mentor and best friend.

Four siblings predeceased him — Frederick, Herman, Nelly and John.

Arrangements include a wake at Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home in 50 Central St., Hudson, Mass., on Wednesday, July 2, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Burial and graveside ceremonies will be at Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta on Thursday, July 3, at 2 p.m.

The family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, Mass., 01701, in lieu of flowers.

Agnes R. Defilippo

AFTON — Agnes Russell Defilippo, of Afton, N.Y., died on Monday, June 30, 2003, at 5 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Cheryl Jones, in Bainbridge, N.Y.

She was born in Bainbridge on July 17, 1918, the daughter of Luther and Maude (Wright) Russell.

She graduated from Bainbridge school in 1936 and was the salutatorian of her class.

She married Robert Defilippo on Aug. 17, 1946. They lived in Sidney and raised their family there. They later retired to Port Orange, Fla.

She is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Muriel and Nick Johnson of Afton, Cheryl and Jerry Jones of Bainbridge, and Robin and Tom Aylesworth of Leesburg, Va.; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, several nephews and nieces, and special friends.

Robert predeceased her in 1979. She was also predeceased by her four sisters, Verna, Grace, Muriel and Nellie.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, July 3, at 2 p.m. at the Dorothy Memorial Home, 58 West Main St., in Bainbridge, with the Rev. Wayne Burnett officiating.

Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Chenango County Hospice, 21 Hayes Street, Norwich, N.Y., 13815.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Nick E. Ferrentelli and Arthur N. Jones and the Dorothy Memorial Homes of Afton and Bainbridge.

Charles F. Mann

MOUNT VISION — Charles F. Mann, 72, of Dutch Hill Road, Mount Vision, died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a brief illness.

He was born in Crown Heights Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y., on April 25, 1931, son of Charles M. Mann and Dorothy Paulsgraf. He graduated from Babylon High School in the Class of 1948.

He was married to Irene Muller on Nov. 19, 1950, in Lindenhurst, N.Y.

He worked at Bohack on Long Island before moving to Mount Vision in 1965 where he worked at Corning Glass Works in Oneonta as head of shipping and receiving, retiring in 1986.

Upon moving to Mount Vision in 1965, Charlie opened Homestead Auto Sales, which he operated until 1991.

Charlie was a member of Free and Accepted Masons, Laurens Lodge 0548, the Otsego County Magistrates Association and the New York State Magistrates Association. Charlie was town justice for the town of Laurens from 1977 to 1989. When he was town justice, the part of the job he enjoyed the most was being able to marry people. He married many local couples.

Charlie's greatest joy was his family, and he was honored to have been able to marry his nephew Mitchell, grandson Chuck and Jennifer, and granddaughter Melissa and Colby. He wintered in Jenson Beach, Fla., where he enjoyed playing his piano for friends at the club house.

In Charlie's retirement years, he had a love for wood working and owned and operated Mount Vision Pine Shop. Charlie could be found swapping stories with friends and relatives in his workshop or garage. Charlie enjoyed airplanes and got his pilot's license after his vehicle accident in 1980. Charlie was a fighter and overcame many obstacles. He was a very active member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church of Laurens.

Survivors include sons Charlie and wife Sue of Mount Vision, Donald Mann of Mount Vision, Kenneth and wife Barbara of Oneonta, and Robert A. Mann and wife Karen E. Mann of Laurens; grandchildren Chuck and wife Jennifer Mann of Oneonta, Melissa and husband Colby Shaul of Mount Vision, Kenneth and Richard Mann of Oneonta, Nathan, Stephanie and Ashley Mann of Laurens; great-grandchildren Jordan, Zachary and Cordell Shaul of Mount Vision, sister Dorothy Meehan and husband Tom of Medford; sister-in-law Roberta Mann of Burlington Flats, many nieces, nephews, good friends and fast Freddie.

Charlie's mother, father, brother and niece predeceased him.

The family will be receiving friends at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., in Oneonta, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 3.

There will be a brief funeral service at 7 p.m. Thursday. Interment will be in the Burlington Flats Cemetery at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Paul Messner officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in his memory be made to St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Laurens.
