Dean M. Graham

ONEONTA — Dean M. Graham (better known as "Doc,") 80, died at his home in Oneonta on Friday, July 4, 2003.

He was born on May 9, 1923, in Santa Ana, Calif., and was the son of Howard Edward and Mary (Fernandez) Graham.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Victoria (Sellano); and his children from his previous marriage to Dolores Vradenburg, Barry Graham and his wife, Cheryl, Darlene Creager, Deborah Ullman and her husband, Wayne, and Dorenna Hart and her husband, Kraig. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Connelly; and grandchildren, Kevin, Brian and Keith Graham and Alanna and Adrienne Hart; and several nieces and nephews.

In 1945, he obtained a unique undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin. Because of his 160 plus undergraduate credits, the University conferred a Ph.B or "Bachelor of Philosophy." He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkley in 1953.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1947 commissioned as Lieutenant Commander on the aircraft carrier the USS Kersarge.

He was employed as a research scientist for the Atomic Energy Commission from 1949-1953, Berkley, Calif.; Senior Scientist for Upjohn Co., Kalamazoo, Mich., 1953-1957; Director of Pharmaceutical Research for Stamford Research Institute, Menlo, Calif., 1957-1958; Director of Research for White Laboratories, Kenilworth, N.J., 1958-60; Vice President KV Pharmacal Co., St. Louis, Mo., 1960-1962; President and CEO Graham Laboratories, Inc., Hobart, 1963-1996; President and CEO Graham Development, Inc., Oneonta, 1996.

Doc had an insatiable desire to learn and "know" all things in which he was involved. He passed this on to all that he mentored. Doc was directly and deeply involved with his family, community, friends and employees and was often the first to step out (often anonymously) to help those in need. Education was so important to him that he set up special gifting and awards to aspiring scholars. Summer jobs were readily supplied to those students seeking to learn the sciences.

His humanistic efforts are probably most endearing, but do not overshadow his contributions to science and pharmaceuticals. He has 39 National and International patents and trademarks and was responsible for the development of such pharmaceutical products as Timed Release Nitroglycerin (for angina) and Lortab (for pain) to name a few.

In 1996, Dr. Graham sold his company, D.M. Graham Laboratories, Inc. to Mallinckrodt, Inc. The sale set in works expansion of his company that would assure hundreds of future jobs and income to the local community. He then started Graham Development, Inc. in Oneonta with hopes of creating additional jobs in the area.

Seldom is Dr. Graham's name mentioned that it doesn't elicit a special story of accountability, responsibility, joy, kindness, opportunity or caring from those involved.

Doc will be missed, but in our hearts he will never be gone!

As he wished, there will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to D.M. Graham Scholarship Fund, care of Timothy Sweeney, 5075 State Route 10, Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Richard Payne Sr.

WEST DAVENPORT — Richard "Dick" Payne Sr., 78, died on April 12, 2003, of complications related to bypass surgery. Despite his long battle with heart disease and diabetes he rarely became discouraged and was fighting to get better the day before his death.

His death was preceded in 1996 by the death of his high school sweetheart and wife of 52 years, Sally Payne. They were longtime owners of the Tally-Ho Restaurant in West Davenport.

After retiring in 1989, they split their seasons between Florida and New York. They enjoyed traveling the open roads and seeing the country in their RV. He will be buried next to her at the Davenport Cemetery.

Dick was known for his vibrant sense of humor and compassion for people. Dick disagreed with W.C. Fields on one major point; he loved dogs and kids.

He especially loved his children, Richard Payne Jr., and Robert Payne; and his grandchildren, Michael Payne, Thomas Payne and Maxine Payne. He left behind two sisters, Betty Kukenberger and Barbara Decker; and an extended network of family and friends.

Dick was an avid dancer. He and his companion, Betty Hodges, danced and played shuffleboard nearly every week and enjoyed playing practical jokes on their friends. He found great comfort in her friendship in recent years.

Dick's love for aviation led him to spend many summer evenings and weekends at the F&F Airport with his friends, flying or just "hangar flying."

He served in the Navy as an Aviation Metal Smith during World War II and the Korean War.

He was active in many community activities and helped out whenever his health allowed.

Friends and family are asked to join us for a graveside service to be held Saturday, July 12, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. at the Davenport Cemetery in Davenport, and for a reception to celebrate his life at the Tally-Ho immediately afterwards.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
