Dr. Harry J. Helsel, 83, of 2 Sequoia Drive, Onondaga Hill, and Pompano Beach, Fla., died Tuesday at Van Duyn Home & Hospital. Born in Forty Fort, Pa., he graduated from Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1941. He retired in 1973 as a veterinarian; he and Dr. Walter Matuszak owned DeWitt Animal Hospital for many years. He was a member of Elmwood Presbyterian Church and Bellevue Country Club. He was a race horse owner and driver at Vernon Downs and Pompano Park for many years. He was an animal inspector for the federal government during World War II. Survivors: His wife of 53 years, Virginia Rose-Helsel of Pompano Beach; a brother, Raymond of New York City. Services: 11 a.m. Monday in Elmwood Presbyterian Church. Burial, private. Erwin B. Kadtke

Erwin B. Kadtke, 76, of Crawford Avenue, Syracuse, died Monday at Loretto. Born in Breslau, Germany, he moved to Syracuse in 1962. He retired in 1987 as a machine repairman at New Venture Gear after 25 years. He was a welder in Germany for several years and was a member of Arion Club of Syracuse and United Auto Workers 624. He was a German Army veteran of World War II. Survivors: His wife of 43 years, the former Dagmar Weber; two daughters, Pia Kadtke of Palatine Bridge and Stefanie Bowles of Cicero; two grandchildren. Services and burial: Private. Calling hours, 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Sears-Middleton- Jones Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., North Syracuse.

Ruth H. Renze

Ruth Hakes Sullivan Renze, 88, of Tully died Jan. 13 at James Square Health & Rehabilitation Centre. Born in Pitcher, she graduated from Cortland Normal School. She retired after 46 years as a registered nurse from St. Mary Hospital in Tucson, Ariz., and had worked at Upstate Medical Center and St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center. She was a member of Eastwood Baptist Church. Her first husband, Timothy Sullivan, died in 1953; her second husband, Francis Renze, died in 1977. Survivors: A daughter, Judith Cary of Syracuse; two sons, Timothy J. Sullivan of Tully and Thomas E. Sullivan of Dallas; two brothers, Robert Hakes of South Otselic and Keith Hakes of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Services: Private. Richard B. Stone

Richard B. Stone, 74, formerly of Albro Road, Poolville, died Monday. Born in Eaton, he graduated in 1946 from Proctor High School in Utica. He retired in 1983 from Webb and Sons in Sherburne. He had worked for GLF (Agway) in Earlville and had also been a self-employed grain and produce dealer. He was a longtime and honorary member of the Poolville Fire Department, where he had served as chief, president and secretary. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. Survivors: Two daughters, Cheryl A. Stone of Hamilton and Audrey L. Stone of Kent, Wash. Graveside services: Private. Burial, Poolville Cemetery. No calling hours. Charles W. Winslow Jr

Charles William Winslow Jr., 69, of Kernersville, N.C., died Monday of a heart attack. Born in Onondaga County, he lived in Syracuse until Jan. 15, when he moved to Kernersville. He worked as a salesman and was a Navy veteran. Survivors: Three sons, Chris of Kernersville, Scott of Alexandria, Va., and Douglas of Syracuse; a brother, Robert of Syracuse. Shirley Ann Derby Wood, 68, of Prospect Street, Caughdenoy, died Monday. She was a life resident of the Central Square area and a past member of Caughdenoy Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She was a past den mother for Cub Scout Pack 709 and was past troop leader of the Junior Girl Scouts Troop in Caughdenoy. Survivors: Her husband of 49 years, Maurice; four daughters, Yvonne Nowodwroski of Hastings, Dierdra Schell and Roseanne Wood, both of Caughdenoy, and Rachel Wood of Lake Placid; two sons, Stewart of Brewerton and Michael of Mexico; a sister, Lila Sweet of Constantia; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Hattie L. Webster Buck, 78, of Hemlock Road, Onondaga Nation, died Tuesday. She was a life resident of the Onondaga Nation. She was a homemaker and a member of the Beaver Clan. She was a member of Wesleyan Methodist Church, Six Nation Agricultural Society and North American Indian Club. Survivors: Her husband, Chief Stanley L.; two sons, Samuel E. Sr. of the Onondaga Nation and John A. of Mattydale; three sisters, Gertrude Shenandoah of the Onondaga Nation, Doris Bellinger of Brewerton and Dorothea Emerson of North Syracuse; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter. Services: 10 a.m. Friday at the home of her sister, Gertrude, Route 11A, Onondaga Nation, and 11 a.m. in Wesleyan Methodist Church. Burial, Onondaga Nation Cemetery. Iva Lou Maine Coffee, 94, of North Street, Madison, died Monday. Born in Brookfield, she attended Waterville Central School. She was a homemaker and a member of Madison First Baptist Church. Her husband of 53 years, Bill, died in 1974; a son, Leroy, and a daughter, Marion Knisley, died in 2001. He was a steward at Onondaga Hotel for more than 25 years and was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. His wife, Dolly, died in 1973. He was a 50-year member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Anna S., died in 2001. Survivors: Three sons, Andrew J. of Albany, Richard S. of Chicago and George D. of Syracuse; a sister, Margaret Rowe of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Harry of Auburn; four grandchildren. She retired in 1965 from Nestle Co. in Fulton after 25 years and then owned and operated Wiltse Gift Shop and Ceramic Shop in Hannibal. She was a member of Hannibal Community Church and Fulton Women's Bowling League. Her husband, Henry F., died in 1968. Survivors: A daughter, M. Ardis Pawlenko of Hannibal; three sons, John H. of Liverpool, Donald L. of Parish and Charles R. of Macedon; a sister, Arlene VanWie of Fair Haven; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson. She was an associate member of Sons & Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors and a member of American Legion Post 924 and St. Rose of Lima Church, Montrose. She was a Navy veteran of the Persian Gulf War. Survivors: Her husband of 20 years, Steven L.; two sons, David and Richard, both of Montrose; her parents, Raymond and Ethel Brown of Camillus; nine sisters, Cathy Van Camp, Beverly Ezzo, Elizabeth Ducett, Theresa Spaulding and Marian Brown, all of Syracuse, Ann Eckert of Fairmount, Staff Sgt. Born in Syracuse, she lived in Nedrow and DeRuyter 60 years before moving to Florida in 1989. She was a homemaker. Her husband, William, died in 1982.
