Grace Murdoch

SHREVEPORT, La. — Grace Murdoch, 96, a resident at the Glen Retirement Facility, Shreveport, La., and formerly of Sidney Center, N.Y., passed away Saturday, July 12, 2003, at her residence.

She was born April 13, 1907, in Patterson, N.J., the daughter of the late Frank and Ida Baker Holmberg.

On Dec. 29, 1928, she married Leland E. Murdoch in Patterson. He predeceased her on April 14, 1972.

She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney, N.Y.

She is survived by two sons, Leland E. Murdoch Jr., of West Winfield, N.Y., and Daniel B. Murdoch of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Laura Hawthorne, predeceased her mother.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 18, 2003, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Michael Shank, pastor of her church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center.

At her request there will be no calling hours.

Memorial gifts may be directed to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, River Street, Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Ethel M. Steele

MASONVILLE — Ethel M. Steele, 79, of Masonville, died Saturday afternoon, July 12, 2003, at her residence, with her loving family at her side.

She was born Jan. 11, 1924, in Masonville, the daughter of Clifton Elias and Lena Ruth (Wheeler) Foster.

She married Arnold Ernest Steele on Aug. 30, 1942, in Sidney Center. He survives her.

Ethel was a homemaker in her own home. She enjoyed crocheting and made many bedspreads and afghans over the years.

She was a former member of the Delhi Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.

She is survived by her husband, Arnold E. Steele of Masonville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Clifton Reginald Steele and Marjorie Louise Steele of Orlando, Fla., and Bryan Arnold Steele and Cheryl Elizabeth Steele of Unadilla; one daughter and son-in-law, Pastors Edith Ruth Baker and Raymond Lee Baker of Geneva, Ohio; one brother, Clifton Arthur Foster of Masonville; one sister, Lena Doris (Foster) Irwin of Masonville; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents; two sisters, Ruth Ellen Stodard and Myona Clift; and a brother, Carl J. Foster.

Friends are invited to call at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, (directly off Exit 10 of I-88) on Monday, July 14, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be present at the funeral home.

A graveside funeral and committal service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at the Walton Cemetery, Walton, with the Rev. Wayne Muckel of Titusville, Pa., and the Rev. Stephen Drake of Pittman, N.J., co-officiating.

Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery, Walton.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Ethel M. Steele. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of Funeral Directors James S. Westcott and James C. Magee.

Timothy J. Cutting

SIDNEY — Timothy J. Cutting, 29, of 40 River St., Sidney, passed away unexpectedly Friday, July 11, 2003, in the Village of Sidney.

He was born July 30, 1973, in Sidney, the son of Ernest R. and Rita Yeager Cutting Sr.

Tim was a graduate of the Walton High School. At the present time he was employed by the Quickway Store, Sidney. He had worked at Toddies Restaurant in Sidney, and the Olde Jericho Inn in Bainbridge.

He is survived by his mother, Rita Cutting of Sidney; his father and stepmother, Ernest R. and Donna Cutting Sr. of Bainbridge; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Ernest and Tina Cutting Jr. of Afton, Jeffrey and Michelle Cutting of Bainbridge, and Craig Murwin of Oxford; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Leslie Bowker of Walton, and Wendy and Kevin Baldauf of White Plains; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2003, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery, Afton.

Friends are invited to call from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Elsie Mae Frost

SIMSBURY, Conn. — Elsie Mae (Lorenz) Frost, 84, of Simsbury, Conn., wife of James A. Frost, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at her home.

She was born May 5, 1919, in Perth Amboy, N.J., daughter of the late Herbert N. and Olive (Jones) Lorenz, and lived in Oneonta, N.Y., from 1947 to 1964. Later she lived in Albany, N.Y., and Simsbury.

A month past her 18th birthday, Mrs. Frost received her bachelor of science degree from New College, Columbia University. Two years later she was awarded the master's degree by Teacher's College, Columbia University. At age 19, she signed her first contract as a teacher to instruct in the Briarcliff Manor School, Westchester County, N.Y. Throughout her lifetime she remained an advocate for children.

During her years in Oneonta, she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and served on the Girl Scout Board and on the 4-H Club board. She was vice president of United Way and became a trustee for the school district outside the city limits of Oneonta. It was largely through her efforts that a consolidated school district was formed and children living outside the city limits were bussed to the Oneonta Schools.

With her lifelong friend, Clara Netzer, she took part in numerous activities to benefit the New York State University College at Oneonta.

While living in Albany and Simsbury, she continued her charitable works and served children in a variety of ways.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Frost is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Elise F. Alair and Patrick Alair, and Janet F. and Victor Naleski, all of West Hartford, Conn.; a sister, Eleanor L. Schneider of Ashland, Va.; and four grandchildren, Olivia and Allyssa Alair and Julian and James Naleski, all of West Hartford.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2003, at the Avon Congregational Church, Main Street, Avon, Conn.

Private burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Avon, Conn.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to do so may send a charitable contribution to the College at Oneonta Foundation for the Elsie Mae Lorenz Frost Endowed Scholarship. The mailing address is: College at Oneonta Foundation, 308 Netzer Administration Building, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Howard F. Herman

CHERRY VALLEY — Graveside committal service and burial for Mr. Howard F. Herman, who passed away Oct. 28, 2002, in Zephyrhills, Fla., will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Sharon Cemetery, (Leesville) Sharon Springs.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Michael J. Miskell

DAVENPORT CENTER — Mr. Michael James Miskell, 48, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown after a two-year battle with cancer.

He was born May 17, 1955, in Oneonta, the son of John and Mary (Jackson) Miskell.

He was a building contractor in Davenport Center, where he was a lifelong resident.

Survivors include his companion of 17 years, Robin Whiting, of Davenport Center; three daughters, Brooke of Davenport Center, and Tina and Ginger Miskell of Oneonta; one son, Michael Miskell of Hobart; four grandchildren, Jeremey Hunt, Brittany Kopp, Tyler Kopp and Serena Miskell; his parents, John and Mary Miskell of Oneonta; two brothers, Robert and his wife, Vickie Miskell, and Patrick and his companion, Wendy Miskell, all of Oneonta; a stepbrother, John and his wife, Darleen Miskell of Schenevus; a stepsister, Jacqui and her husband, Jamaul Neeley of Tilson; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

There will be no public services.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Gerald S. Wharton

GRANITE FALLS, N.C. — Gerald S. Wharton, 91, formerly of Richmondville, N.Y., Worcester, N.Y., and Middleburgh, N.Y., died Monday, July 14, 2003, at the Mountain View Manor Home for Adults in Middleburgh.

Mr. Wharton was born Nov. 12, 1911, in Richmondville, the son of Alexander and Nettie (Brooker) Wharton.

He attended the former Richmondville Central School until 1927, and graduated from Phillip Schuyler High School in Albany, N.Y., June 1929.

Mr. Wharton served as an apprentice printer at Boyd Printing Company, Albany, from 1929 to 1934. He worked for a number of printing firms in Albany and the former Cobleskill Index from 1936 to 1939. In March 1939, he established the Schoharie Print Shop and on Jan. 1, 1940, he formed a partnership with Raymond E. Byrne and purchased The Middleburgh News. In 1955, Mr. Wharton became sole owner. The business was sold in 1969, to Jackson Bennett and Stanley Chichester of Middleburgh and then was discontinued in 1983.

Mr. Wharton became widely known throughout upstate New York for his weekly feature articles, "Random Reflections," which appeared in several papers for many years. He also had articles published in North Carolina, where he moved to Granite Falls in July of 1978.

Mr. Wharton served as an aide to State Senator Mason from 1972 to 1974.

He was proprietor of Wharton's Food Market in Worcester, from 1972 to 1975, where he lived until 1978, when he moved to Granite Falls, N.C. While living in North Carolina, he and his wife, Ruth, became active in numerous city activities and won many honors for their flower gardens.

He was active conducting his Wharton Engraving Company business there and writing a weekly newspaper column for the local newspaper.

Mr. Wharton was a 45-year member of the Middleburgh Rotary Club, and belonged to various other organizations. For nine years he served on the council at St. Mark's Lutheran Church of Middleburgh.

Mr. Wharton was predeceased by his wife, Ruth, who died April 26, 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Geraldine VanVoorhis of Oak Hill, N.Y.; three grandsons, James R. VanVoorhis of Preston Hollow, N.Y., Jeffrey T. VanVoorhis of New Freedom, Pa., and Matthew G. VanVoorhis of Oak Hill, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren, Timothy J. and Amy Lynn VanVoorhis, both of Preston Hollow, and Casi VanVoorhis of Gilboa, N.Y.; and three nephews and one niece.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2003, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, N.Y.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Richmondville Rural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Middleburgh Emergency Volunteer Ambulance Corp., P.O. Box 817, Middleburgh, N.Y. 12122 or Rensselaerville Ambulance Corp., Rensselaerville, N.Y. 12147.

George Couperthwait

BINGHAMTON — George Fowler Couperthwait Jr., 74, passed away on July 14, 2003.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Joyce; his sons and daughters-in-law, George and Anna Couperthwait III, William and Michelle Couperthwait, Kenneth and Christina Couperthwait, and Andrew Couperthwait; his grandchildren, Celia and Caroline Couperthwait; his sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Henry Goodyear Jr.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

George was a graduate of the Taft School and Hobart College. He served as vice president of Fowler Dick and Walker Department Store from 1955-1982, assistant manager of operations at Boscov's Department Store until 1985, and was on the board of directors of First City National Bank and on the regional advisory board for the First City Division of Chase Lincoln First Bank.

George served in the military on active duty from 1952 to 1956, as Chief of Naval Operations, Office of Director of Naval Communications, in Washington, D.C., and with the U.S. Naval Reserve as Division Commanding Officer until 1972.

George proudly served on the board of trustees of Northwood School in Lake Placid for 19 years, from which all four of his sons graduated.

Volunteer work included serving as chapter chairman on the board of directors of the Broome County Chapter of the American Red Cross. He also served for many years as president of the Floral Park Cemetery Association. George was an active member and Finance Committee Chairman of the West Presbyterian Church in Binghamton.

One of his greatest passions was his summer home on Quaker Lake in Pennsylvania. He loved to race sailboats and was a founding commodore of the Quaker Lake Yacht Racing Club. In addition he was very active in the Quaker Lake Cottagers Association, serving terms as both director and president.

The family will receive friends at the Barber Memorial Home, 428 Main St., Johnson City, on Wednesday, July 16, 2003, between 5 and 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2003, at West Presbyterian Church in Binghamton.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that memorial contributions be made to either the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross, 93 Chestnut Road, Binghamton, N.Y., 13905 or to West Presbyterian Church, 80 Main St., Binghamton, N.Y., 13905.

Mildred M. Deuel

CANASTOTA — Mildred M. Deuel, 96, of Route 5, Canastota, died Thursday, July 10, 2003, at the Oneida Healthcare Center Extended Care Facility, following a lengthy illness.

She was born on April 4, 1907, in the town of Lenox (Quality Hill), the daughter of Jerome and May Baker Deuel.

Mildred spent her early years in Canastota, and was a 1924 graduate of Canastota High School. She later graduated from Cortland Normal, receiving her bachelor's degree in education from Albany State Teacher's College, and her master's degree from Syracuse University.

She had lived in Delhi for 43 years, returning to Canastota in 1970. She spent her entire career as a teacher and guidance counselor at the Delaware Academy and Central School in Delhi for 43 years, retiring in 1970.

Mildred had been a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Canastota, and was a member of the New York State Retired Teacher's Association.

She enjoyed reading, crocheting, traveling and collecting angels. Mildred loved her family.

Surviving are a nephew, Ronald F. Lamb of Margate, Fla.; a niece, Audrey and Carl Hutchinson of Fairport; two great-nieces, Deborah and Tom Gallinaro of Canastota, and Kathy and Gary Stone of Livermore, Calif.; a great-nephew, David Hutchinson of Orlando, Fla.; and a great-great-niece, Meredith Gallinaro.

Mildred was predeceased by a sister, Hazel D. Lamb, who died on Dec. 17, 1994.

Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2003, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., Canastota. The Rev. James R. Harriff of the First Baptist Church of Canastota officiated. Burial was in Lenox Rural Cemetery, Canastota.

Calling hours were held Sunday, prior to the funeral, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home, 201 James St., Canastota.

In her memory contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Canastota, P.O. Box 28, Canastota, N.Y., 13032.

David Decker

HOBART — David Decker, 53, of Hobart township, died Saturday, July 12, 2003, in Detroit, Mich.

He was born Dec. 6, 1949, in Stamford, the son of Harry and Margaret (Champlin) Decker.

He married Marie Stone on July 15, 1972, in the Hobart Township Methodist Church.

A lifelong township resident, he served in the United States Army from 1970-72, enjoying membership in the V.F.W. American Legion Post in Stamford.

David was employed as a heavy equipment operator at Wyckoff Custom Crushing in Gilboa.

He was happiest when he could ride his four-wheeler up the mountain and look back at the Township Valley that he loved. He also enjoyed all out of doors activities, especially hunting, fishing and golf.

David had an innate ability to be a friend — in conversation, lending a helping hand and caring. He could put a smile on one's face no matter the situation.

His wife, Marie, at home; two sons, Andrew Decker and Shelley Palmer, and her daughter, Taylor, and Roger Decker and Jennifer Miller; two brothers, Ernest Decker of Florida, and Mark and Janet Decker of Pennsylvania, and their children, April and Lorena Decker; his mother, Margaret Decker; and grandmother, Clara Champlin survive him. Also a sister-in-law, Connie Stone and Donald Champlin Sr., and their children, Traci Stone and Donald Champlin Jr., and a sister-in-law, Kathy Stone.

His father, Harry; a brother, Thomas; sister-in-law, Shirley; and a nephew, Kris, all predeceased him.

Graveside services will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2003, at the Decker Family Cemetery, Hobart Township, Hobart, with Pastor Richard Elder officiating.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, July 17, 2003, from 2 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. The family will be in attendance from 6 to 9 p.m.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Hobart Fire Department and Emergency Squads or to 4-H South Kortright Calf Club, in care of Barbara Robertson, Bloomville, N.Y. 13739.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Lewis H. Johnson

MARGARETVILLE — Lewis H. Johnson, 83, of Dry Brook Road, Arkville, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital in Margaretville, after a lengthy illness.

He was an area resident for all of his life and worked in construction with Local 17 until his retirement in 1982.

He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and a 40-year member of the Margaretville American Legion Post.

He was an avid gardener of both flowers and vegetables. He was a good cook, and spent time with friends hunting leeks. He was a very social man who could spin a tall tale, riveting even the most incredulous.

He was born in Halcott Center on March 6, 1920, the son of the late Herbert and Gertrude Feiro Johnson.

Surviving are his wife, Regina Dolores White Johnson, with whom he would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on Oct. 12, 2003; two daughters, Marietta Shultis and husband, Doug, of Arkville, and Suzann VanHouten and husband, Brian, of Hurleyville; a son, Lewis V. Johnson and wife, Jackie, of Arkville; grandchildren, Sharon Stoddard and husband, John, of Kerhonkson, Christopher Shultis of Chesapeake, Va., Regina Beiling of Webster, Jennifer Hermann and husband, Christopher, of Callicoon, Denise Kenbel and husband, Charles, of Texas, Kevin and Cory Johnson of Arkville; a brother, Richard Johnson of Fleischmanns; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was very proud of the fact that three of his grandchildren are active members of the armed services as Chief Master Sergeant, Chief Warrant Officer and Captain.

He was predeceased by a brother, Milbert Johnson; and a sister, Elsie Smith.

A service to celebrate the life of Lewis Johnson will be held on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia. Friends will be received on Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice of Delhi.

Inurnment will take place at the St. Francis de Sales Cemetery, Route 28, Allaben.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia.
