He married Beth Evans in Mount Vision, N.Y. She survives him.

He had worked for the automotive industries at various positions: service manager, mechanic and many others.

He lived in Arizona for 27 years after living most of his life in Oneonta, N.Y.

He was a member of the Northwest Baptist Church, Phoenix, Ariz., where he was appreciated for his sense of humor, evident even through a long illness.

Nathan Brill

OTEGO — Nathan Brill, 87, of Otego died July 23, 2003, at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Oneonta, after a lengthy illness.

Nathan was born Dec. 8, 1915, in Hartford, Conn. He grew up in Brooklyn and spent his working years in New York City. Upon retirement in 1978, he moved with his wife to Otego.

Having to leave high school during the Great Depression, Nathan apprenticed as a lithographer and learned the trade with which he supported his family.

Nathan was active in many social and labor movements during the 1930s-40s. He took part in marches and demonstrations for employment programs, social welfare and immigrants' rights; and lobbied President Roosevelt's cabinet members to create programs for economic and social change. Nathan continued his involvement in labor issues as an active member of Local 1 of the Amalgamated Lithographers of America.

Nathan's breadth of knowledge and vocabulary belied his lack of formal education. He was a voracious reader, using books to satisfy his interests in many subjects, especially travel, exploration, history and sailing ships.

He and his wife loved classical music and folk dancing. Nathan married Florence Mendelsohn in 1935, in Brooklyn. They were devoted to each other as both husband and wife and best friends for more than 62 years. Florence passed away in 1997. They had two sons.

Nathan was happiest spending time with his family. He was devoted to his children and derived great satisfaction from sharing in their everyday lives. From hand-made toys and furniture to rides in his garden cart, from singing songs during auto rides to taking walks in the park, Nathan delighted in the moments spent with his granddaughters.

Nathan is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph P. and Judith Brill of Oneonta. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Jessica E. Brill, 20, and Laura Brill, 15, both of Oneonta.

Nathan was predeceased by his brothers, David, Philip and Jacob Brill.

Funeral services to honor the life of Nathan Brill will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta. Friends are invited to contribute to the service by offering their thoughts in memory of Nathan.
