Albert Kull

COOPERSTOWN — Albert Kull passed away peacefully at his home on July 25, 2003, after a long illness.

He was born in Newark, N.J., on Aug. 5, 1921, the son of Bertha Naab and Albert Kull.

He married Grace Rames on Aug. 23, 1942, in Newark. They moved to Cooperstown in 1956, where they raised their three children.

He served as a 1st lieutenant in the Medical Administration Corps and was stationed in London, England, during World War II. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He worked for 25 years as a bank vault inspector for Diebold and Eaton Corp. until his mandatory retirement in 1977 because of medical problems.

He was a volunteer at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital for 22 years, where he made many friends. For many years he was a familiar figure on the roads around Cooperstown as he took his seven-mile daily walks. He was a talented, self-taught artist and musician. He loved fishing and being on his boat on the lake. His hobby was making beer, which he also liked to drink!

He was predeceased by his parents, a sister-in-law, Sylvia Plagge; five brothers-in-law, Lloyd and John Rames, Michael Fabiano, Vernon Plagge and Leo Chapin.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Grace; three children and their mates, Stephen and Mary Giles, Deerfield, N.H., David and Billie, South Kingston, R.I., and Dianne and Mark Rathbun, Cooperstown; his sister, Bert Chapin, Cooperstown; six grandchildren, Andrew Kull and his wife, Melissa, Portland, Maine, Mary Ann Kull, Kittery, Maine, Benjamin Kull, Los Angeles, Calif., Jennifer and her husband, Eric Noel, Cooperstown, and John and Liza Rathbun, Cooperstown; and three great-grandchildren, Kanah and Will Kull and Lily Noel. Also, two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Fabiano, Cape May Courthouse, N.J., and Marion Rames, Chester, N.J.; two cousins and their mates, Frederick and Marguerite Kull, Durham N.C., and Annette and Frank Tozzi, Mendham, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be no viewing hours. A celebration of life in the form of a memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kull/Rames Scholarship Fund at Cooperstown Central School, 39 Linden Ave., Cooperstown, NY 13326; 547-5380 or the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., Oneonta, NY; 432-6773.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Herbert N. Darling

STAMFORD — Herbert Nelson Darling, 86, of Peter's Road, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at home.

He was born May 30, 1917, in Dolgeville, the son of Herbert Irving and Gertrude (Rockefeller) Darling.

Married for 62 years, he and Elizabeth Francelia Metcalf were married in Jefferson on March 26, 1941.

At 12, in 1929, Herbert moved to the area from Kramers Corner in Starkville. He attended the Mud Schoolhouse on Route 10, and was a member of the last graduating class of Stamford Seminary.

He served as elder and deacon as a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford; was one of the first members of the North Harpersfield Hunting Club; and was a member of the Utsayantha Snowmobile Association.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Dawn Darling Kerr and her husband, Donald, Davenport, and their children, Lisa Kerr Morrell and husband, Jeff, Debi Kerr Moore and husband, Jim, and Sara Kerr; daughter, Betsy Darling Lifgren and her husband, Terry, of Portlandville, and their children, Doug Lifgren and his wife, Cari, Kim Lifgren Tamblin and her husband, Michael, and Jeff Lifgren; a son, Dean Darling and his wife, Joey, of Stamford, and their children, Damon Darling and wife, Niki, Mike Eklund and Kerry Eklund; daughter, Beverly Darling Culligan and husband, Michael, of Maryland, and their children, Amanda Culligan and Michael Culligan; and special children, Michelle Darling Mason and Toby Darling; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Three sisters, Irene Bauder, Grace Peck and Gertrude Decker; and a brother, Stanley Darling, predeceased him.

Services will be private for close friends and family at the Darling home on Peter's Road on Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Patricia L. Shafer officiating.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2003, with the family in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m., at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the North Harpersfield Hunting Club in care of Don Craig, Route 23, Harpersfield, NY 13786 or Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson, NY 12093.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Elinor M. Burhans

NORWICH — Elinor M. Burhans, 75, of Midland Drive, Norwich, passed away early Saturday morning, July 26, 2003, in the New York State Veterans Home, where she had made her home for the past several months.

Elinor was born July 2, 1928, in Hamden, the daughter of Russell and Anna (Marks) Davidson. She grew up in the Walton area and was a graduate of the Walton High School, then furthered her education by attending hair dressing school in Albany. Upon completion of her studies, Elinor opened a hair dressing shop in Delhi, which she operated for a short period of time. She subsequently worked for the Scintilla in Sidney, and following this, was employed by a group of doctors in Walton as a medical secretary.

On April 25, 1953, in Oneonta, she married Floyd Burhans and chose to stay at home and raise her family, to which she was very devoted.

Over the years, Elinor and her husband, who worked for NYSEG, made their home in Stamford from 1954-1963, then in Oneonta from 1963-1971. They moved to Norwich in 1971, and were the first tenants of Maple Grove Trailer Park. In 1988, Elinor and her husband chose to go back to Oneonta, but returned to Norwich in 2001.

Besides being devoted to her family, Elinor enjoyed traveling and camping.

Elinor is survived by her husband, Floyd, of Norwich; her daughter, Diane Lamb of Norwich; her son, William Burhans and his wife, Jackie, of Memphis, Tenn.; her grandchildren, Brian and Stacey Burhans of Memphis, and Jeffrey Lamb of Norwich. She is also survived by her brother, Allen Davidson of Norwich; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Elinor will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2003, from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rebekah Sweet, pastor of the Broad St. United Methodist Church of Norwich, officiating. Interment will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery of Oneonta.

Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m.

Vincent C. Stark

GILBERTSVILLE — Vincent C. Stark, 64, of Gilbertsville, died Friday, July 25, 2003, at The Meadows in Middlefield.

He was born in the town of Butternuts on April 16, 1939, the son of the late Frank and Laura (Todd) Stark.

He was a professional truck driver, having driven for TRL of Pittston, Pa., Todd Trucking of Otego and was the foreman for Ron Allen Trucking during the construction of I-88.

He was active in the Emmaus Community and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Morris. He was a former member of the Baptist Church of Gilbertsville and a former member of the New Berlin Emergency Squad.

He was a political activist and had served his country as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Vince is survived by his friend and companion, Elsie Colburn of Gilbertsville; a son, Stephen Stark and wife, Roxanne, of Clarence, and four other children; two sisters, Dianne Cardwell and John of Parsippany, N.J., and Cynthia Young of Franklin; a sister-in-law, Lura Todd of Morris; grandchildren include Lauren, Wesley and Alicia Stark, and three others; special grandchildren, Jennifer and Bridgette Colburn; two uncles; three aunts, several nieces nephews, cousins and many dear and close friends. He is also survived by Elsie's children and grandchildren, who loved him as a father and granddad.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Frederick; and a brother, Howard Todd.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, in the United Methodist Church in Morris, with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating. Burial will follow in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make contributions in his memory to either the United Methodist Church Improvement Fund, 5 Church St., Morris, NY 13808 or the Emmaus Scholarship Fund, care of Wyoming Annual Conference, P.O. Box 58, Endicott, NY 13760-0058.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Kathleen Sturdevant

Kathleen Tyrrell Sturdevant, 48, of Longs, S.C., and Walton, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C.

She was born in Delhi, the daughter of Helen Boggs Tyrrell and the late Maurice Tyrrell Jr.

Kathleen was a graduate of Delaware Academy. She loved to travel and do activities that involved the out-of-doors, especially golf.

Her grandchildren received her special attention and love.

Surviving in addition to her mother of Delhi are her husband, Charles "Chuck" Sturdevant of Longs, S.C,. and Walton; one son, Derek Sturdevant, and his wife, Deborah, and their children, Cody and Benjamin of Longs, S.C.; a brother, Stephen Tyrrell and his wife, Bonnie, of Lovettsville, Va.; a brother-in-law, Duane Sturdevant and family of Delhi; sister-in-law, Patricia Post and family of New Berlin; mother and father-in-law, Billie and George Sturdevant of Delhi; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Contributions in her memory may be made locally to the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, Bassett Healthcare, One Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Local arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Ruth Molineux

SIDNEY — Ruth Molineux, 83, of Willow Street, Sidney, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2003, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born on Aug. 1, 1919, in Bridgeport, Conn., the daughter of the late Joseph and Lillian Young Beaulieu.

On Aug. 7, 1937, she married Edward Molineux in Newport. He predeceased her on May 17, 1991.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Johnny Chappell of Titusville, Fla., Joan and Richard Coe of Sidney, and June and Neil Haverly of Clifton Park; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Cheryl Molineux of Clifton Park; two sisters, Doris Gallagher and Jean Tremper, both of Oneonta; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; six stepgrandchildren; 16 stepgreat-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will be held at the convenience of her family in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, NY 13838 or to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Octavia Marie Newton Morris

MARYLAND — Octavia Marie Newton Morris, 86, of Maryland, passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Binghamton on Dec. 6, 1916, the daughter of Forest Elothan and Anna Eloise (Howard) Newton. She was the oldest of five children.

The family moved frequently while Forest was in the Navy. Tavy graduated from Binghamton Central High School in 1933.

During World War II, she worked in several war effort type jobs. She also worked in the Endicott Johnson Company in Johnson City, and Link Aviation in Hillcrest, while taking night classes to become a draftsman. She assisted in drawing plans for flight simulators.

Tavy also learned to fly, while employed at Link Aviation, through the Civil Air Aeronautics. After that she worked for Sperry Gyroscope in Garden City on Long Island, making transformers for navigation and gyroscopes for military instruments.

After the war, Tavy's family moved to Colliersville, and she joined them a few months later. This is where she met the love of her life, Gordon Charles Morris, who also returned from the war as an air force mechanic. It was love at first sight, and they were married on Oct. 27, 1946.

For many years Gordon and Tavy owned and operated Morris Garage on Route 7 in Maryland, as well as the East End Coin Laundry in Oneonta.

Despite out living three of her sons and her husband, Tavy drew strength from her faith. Never one to complain, Tavy chose to see the joy and happiness in all her life's experiences, and was a source of constant help and encouragement to everyone she knew.

During the 1980s Tavy resided in Florida. While there she became a Real Estate Broker, and a professional seamstress.

After her grandson, Matthew, was killed by a drunk driver, she became an advocate with M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving).

During the 1990s Tavy moved back to Maryland, and became very active with the Word of Faith Fellowship Church of Maryland, donating her home to the church where services were held for many years.

She is survived by her son and his wife, Clark and Jill Morris of Schenevus; a daughter-in-law, Ellen Morris of Boynton Beach, Fla.; her grandchildren, Bridget and Leslie Streeter, Benjamin Morris, Elizabeth Morris, Andrew Morris, and Kelly and Henry Cooper; a sister, Bonita Ross of Toccoa, Ga.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Gordon, she was predeceased by three sons, David, Fred and Chris Morris; and a grandson, Matthew Morris.

A service to celebrate her life will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at 7 p.m. at the Word of Faith Fellowship Church in Maryland, with the Rev. Frank Mac Cracken, officiating.

A private burial will be in the Milford Center Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Word of Faith Fellowship Church, Maryland, NY.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Vera (Amarose) Spadafora

ONEONTA — Vera (Amarose) Spadafora, formerly of Oneonta, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2003, at the Health South New England Rehabilitation Hospital, in Woburn, Mass.

Vera was born in Oneonta, the daughter of Andrea and Rose (Minerosa) Amarose.

She married Roland Spadafora on Aug. 20, 1976.

She graduated from Bellevue Nursing School in New York City. Vera worked as a nurse for a short time prior to becoming a homemaker. She also volunteered much of her time to caring for and assisting with handicapped children.

She is survived by her husband, Roland Spadafora of Stoneham, Mass.; her son, Dr. Stephen G. Vincent and his wife, Teena of Springfield, Ill.; her daughters, Emily R. Vincent of Rochester, Ill., and Andrea F. Marlow of Stoneham, Mass.; and six grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sisters, Rose Briguglio of Oneonta, Carm Higgins and her husband, Tom of Vestal, and Nancy Smedira and her husband, Nick of Endwell; a brother, Dr. Anthony Amarose of Chicago, Ill.; and an aunt, Mary Jubar of Oneonta.

She was predeceased by a son, David Joseph Vincent andd by her sister, Mary Dorazio.

Funeral services will be private with burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends are invited to call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, NY 13820 on Tuesday, July 29, 2003, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Maine Audubon Society, 20 Gilsland Farm Road, Falmouth, Maine 04105.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Agnes Frances Warner

SYLVANIA, Ohio — Agnes Frances Warner, 87, of Tamworth Road, formerly of Oneonta, passed away on Thursday, July 24, 2003, in Lake Park Rehabilitation Center, Sylvania.

She was born on April 21, 1916, in Richfield Springs, the daughter of the late William and Johanna (Linehan) Mulligan. Raised and educated in Richfield Springs, she graduated from Richfield Springs High School.

On Nov. 27, 1947, she married Harold M. Warner in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. They shared a union of 32 years until his passing in July 1979.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Oneonta and the Rosary Society until moving to Ohio in 1983.

Her heart was focused on her family and will be remembered as a loving, caring and helpful person. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Surviving are two daughters, Donna Warner of Sylvania, and JoAnne Coleman of Brandon, Miss.; four grandchildren, John Coleman, Karen Warner, Cristin Coleman and Richard Coleman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terence Healy officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, American Lung Association or a charity of choice.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

George A. Willix

BURLINGTON FLATS — George A. Willix, 67, of Burlington Flats, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday morning, July 28, 2003.

He was born May 9, 1936, in Berwyn, Ill., the son of George L. and Mildred (Hickey) Willix.

He married Patricia A. Martin on May 1, 1965, in Hicksville, on Long Island.

George served in the United States Navy from 1957-1962.

He was a devoted husband and father who loved his grandchildren with zest.

George was a past member of the Edmeston Rotary and will be remembered by all who had crossed his path as a terrific conversationalist who enjoyed people. One of George's greatest joys was golf, being on the green with old and new friends. He was inducted twice to the Hole in One Club.

George is survived by his wife, Pat; his children and their spouses, June and Joe Melvin, Ed and Kim Willix, Martin and Kristie Willix and Bonnie Brennan; his grandchildren, Audrey, Sam, Claire, Sarah, George, Marissa, Max, Kali, Chelsea, Andrew and Brenda; his siblings, Darlene O'Connor, Dick Willix, Mary Catherine Howard, Maureen Gromsen, Kevin Newman and Jody Newman; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Nativity, Edmeston, with Father John Burns officiating.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 31, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m., with a prayer service at 8 p.m.

Contributions may be made in George's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Elizabeth A. Latt

EAST WORCESTER — A graveside service for Elizabeth A. Latt, who died July 15, 2003, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at the East Worcester Cemetery, state Highway 7.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Funeral Chapel, Worcester.
