Raymond Groves

OTEGO — Raymond W. Groves, 86, of Otego, died suddenly Monday, July 28, 2003, at his home.

He was born April 28, 1917, in Conrath, Wis. In 1927, his family moved to the Pony Farm in Oneonta, where they became known for their excellent sweet corn, popcorn, potatoes and grain crops.

Ray attended Oneonta schools and graduated from Oneonta High School, Class of 1934,

In 1940, he married Eunice W. Foote in Otego. After her death in 1978, he married Inez (Fenton) Carey, who survives.

He is survived also by four sons and daughters-in-law, William and Sandra of Arlington, Mass., Arthur and Jane of Campbell Hall, Richard and Patty of Chile, and Alan and Mary Ann of Anderson, S.C. Other survivors are nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four stepchildren and their families; as well as three sisters, Dr. Esther Fagan of Otego, Sue Olmstead of Las Vegas, Nev., and Alice Bowman of Bethesda, Md.; one brother, Robert Groves of Otego; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Willard, Ted and Jim.

Ray served in the US Army from 1945 to 1947. After attending OCS, he served several months as a 2nd Lt. in the Philippines.

Ray worked for many years in the post office, starting as a substitute rural carrier, then carrier, window clerk, supervisor and Superintendent of Mails. He was also assistant postmaster at Bainbridge and officer in charge at Greene for a brief time. He retired from the postal service in 1980 and worked for a number of years part-time at Wyckoff's Florist.

He was a member of the Otego United Methodist Church, the Susquehanna Valley Grange and Otschodela Council BSA Scoutmaster of Troop 16 Otego for 25 years. He was the recipient of the Silver Beaver & Sertoma Awards. He was a retired member of the Otego Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Squad and taught basic and advanced First Aid for several years in area communities.

Ray was a Literacy Volunteer tutor and was a 13-gallon-plus blood donor. He played baseball for 25 years on the town team before becoming an avid softball player, pitching for many years for Oneonta Municipal League teams and the "over 35" League. Other interests have been roller skating, square dancing and singing "Poet Laureate" for his church, family and friends.

Ray was the author of "Poems Purely for Pleasure," a collection of over 400 of his poems and songs, published in 1989.

In accordance with Ray's wishes his body has been donated to science.

A memorial service will be held at the Otego United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht officiating. Calling hour will be at 10 a.m. until service time.

Memorial gifts can be given to the Otego United Methodist Church, the Otego Emergency Squad or Troop 16, Boy Scouts, Otego.

Winifred Sacco

BLOOMVILLE — Winifred Patricia Sacco went to be with her husband on July 28, 2003, with her loving daughter, Ann and son-in-law, Peter, by her side.

She was born on Sept. 22, 1921, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Anthony and Mary Belle (Johnson) Kelly.

She met and fell in love with Dominick Sacco, whom she married on Nov. 16, 1938, in Brooklyn, where they made their home on Bevy Court until moving to Brownell Road in Bloomville in 1988. He predeceased her on Aug. 5, 1992.

Winnie, as she was known to all, was a loving and giving wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother, who loved all wildlife and was an avid reader and had several poems and articles published.

She is survived by two daughters, Winifred Ann Sebastian and her husband, Peter, of Brownell Road, Bloomville, and Patricia Sacco LaMorte of Brooklyn; one son, John Sacco, also of Brooklyn; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, who will greatly miss her; and several nieces and nephews. Winnie is also survived by three brothers and one sister.

Her daughter, Donna Huebner; daughter-in-law, Jocelyn Sacco; and her sister Mary Dobbins predeceased her.

For the last four years following her stroke, Winnie was a resident of Robinson Terrace in Stamford, where she received excellent love and care from the nurses and staff there.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Stamford, with Father Anthony Ligato officiating. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2003, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Leon E. Palladino

DELHI — Leon E. Palladino, 39, of Delhi, died Friday, July 25, 2003, in the town of Andes.

He was born on Feb. 18, 1964, in Elizabeth, N.J., the son of Gerald and Doris (Schmitz) Palladino.

He married Shannon Daly on Nov. 17, 1988, in the town of Kortright.

A 20-year resident and a jack-of-all-trades, Leon had a great love for the outdoors. Logging and hunting were two of his favorite hobbies.

He especially loved spending time with his three children.

He is survived by his wife, Shannon; and three children, Shawna, Anthony and Fawn, all of Delhi; a brother, Albert Palladino and his family of Bigpine Key, Fla.; an aunt, Bernice and Herman Brinkmeyer of Kearny, N.J., and an aunt, Leona Leoffler of Pompton Lakes, N.J.

He was predeceased by his father, Gerald, in 1970; and his mother, Doris, in 1989.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, July 31, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Jeff Staples officiating.

Friends are invited to call at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi, on Wednesday, July 30, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

John Muli

MARGARETVILLE — John Muli, 78, of Church Street, Margaretville, passed away July 28, 2003, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

He was born Feb. 22, 1925, in New York state, the son of Benjamin Muli and Jeannie Tramuta.

Calling hour is 1 p.m. until the funeral service at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. James McDevitt, officiating.

Burial will be in Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Chauncey J. Dibble

WATERLOO — Memorial services for Chauncey Joseph Dibble, 83, who passed away on July 4, 2003, at Seneca Nursing and Rehab Center, Waterloo, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Hobart United Methodist Church, Hobart, with Pastor Richard Elder officiating. Burial will follow at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Emil H. Best

BAINBRIDGE — Emil H. Best, of Bainbridge, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at The Hospital in Sidney.

Survivors include his son, David H. Best of Bainbridge; daughters, Susan and Walter Barton of Ancramdale, Kate and Michael McNulty, Seattle, Wash.; son, Walter and Susan Meagher, Anocortes, Wash.; daughter-in-law, Marcia Best-Zuhlke, Clayville; grandchildren, Jessica, Sarah and Robert; two great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Jeanne Thompson.

Emil was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy; and his second wife, Esther; as well as two sons, Richard and Robert.

Emil graduated from Arlington High School and went on to graduate from Syracuse University.

He taught at Bainbridge High School for 39 years physical education and was a guidance counselor and a coach.

Emil was elected into the Section 4, Coaches Wing in 1992. He was an avid golfer, a devoted Yankee and New York Giants fan.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Katherine Evans officiating. Interment will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.

William Fangemann

MARGARETVILLE — William Howard Fangemann, 90, of Margaretville, died July 29, 2003, at the home of his caregiver and Godson, Robert F. Huttner, Broad Acres, Margaretville.

William was born July 8, 1913, in New York City, the son of William Henry Fangemann and Charlotte Elizabeth Haug. He was never married.

He was a retired mechanical engineer, having worked for Harris Intertype, Brooklyn.

He was a legal resident of Port Richie, Fla., since retiring in 1978, spending summers in Margaretville.

He was a past member of the Margaretville Rotary Club, Margaretville, and Catskill Christian Center, Margaretville.

He graduated from NYU with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, and master's degree in MBA.

William is survived by his godson, Robert F. Huttner of Margaretville.

Calling hour will be at 1 p.m. until the funeral service at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville, with Pastor Robert Englehardt, officiating.

Committal services will be private.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Mary Leadholm

ONEONTA — Mary Barbara (Bobbie) Leadholm, 72, died July 28, 2003, at Bassett Hospital, with her loving family by her side, following a lengthy illness.

She was born April 29, 1931, in San Antonio, Texas. She was the only daughter of the late Roy and Jane Roberts.

She attended college in Austin, Texas, and worked as a secretary for the United States Air Force, where she met her husband. She was married to the late Albert H. Leadholm on Feb. 4, 1953, in Lucedale, Miss.

She raised a large family all while supporting her husband's career in the United States Air Force.

She was a loving mother and grandmother and took great pride in raising her children while watching her family grow.

She is survived by three sons and seven daughters, their spouses, and 26 grandchildren: Deborah (Kriss) and Mark, their children, Miriam, Laura, Naomi, Kevin, and Kara of Albany, Roy (Leadholm) and Karin, their children, Anne Katrine and Niels of Norway, Thomas (Leadholm) and his children, Christopher and Jessica of Michigan, Joseph (Leadholm) and Lynne and their daughter, Rae Anne of Michigan, Mary (Sliviak) and V. Lee and their children, Kenneth and Amanda of Maryland, Margaret (Griffin) and Norman, their children, Bennjamin, Suzannah, Jonnathan and Harrisonn of Galway, Jane (McBride) and Chris and their children, Andrew and Joseph of Tennessee, Betty (Hayes) and Casey and their children, Michael and William of Texas, Patricia (Carroll) and James and their children, Daniel, Jennifer, and Nicholas of Kentucky, Carolyn (Wittke) and William and their children, Catherine, Christina and Joseph of Michigan.

She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Carolyn Rose Leadholm of Michigan; and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 1, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Foster Hill Cemetery in Middle Grove.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Peter J. Ruppert

STAMFORD — Peter J. Ruppert, 49, a resident of both Stamford and Paterson, N.J., passed away suddenly on July 28, 2003, at his home in Paterson.

He was born on March 7, 1954, in Teaneck, N.J., the son of Robert and Catherine (Murphy) Ruppert. As a youth he was a resident of Glen Rock, N.J., then Hobart, where he graduated from South Kortright Central School.

He married Therese Boles on March 27, 1981, at the Sacred Heart Church in Stamford.

Peter was a spirited and warmhearted son, brother, friend, husband and father.

He also owned and operated a successful pool construction and repair business for over 25 years.

He is survived by his wife, Therese; and his three children, Peter, Caitlin and Jacob, of Stamford; his mother, Catherine Ruppert of Hobart; his four brothers, Eugene Tuite and his family of Glen Rock, Robert Ruppert of Windham, Gerard Ruppert and his wife, of Albany, and Kieran Ruppert of Phoenix, Ariz.; and his sisters, Judy Plum and her family of Victor, and Katy Barber and her family of Stamford; and his beloved aunt, Sheila Murphy, and her children, Susan, Patrick and Sheila.

Friends may call on Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., in Stamford.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Anthony Ligato on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford.

Interment will follow at the Hobart Cemetery in Hobart.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the Christmas Feeling Fund, Stamford, NY 12167.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Herman Thompson

ONEONTA — Herman George (Bill) Thompson, 81, formerly of Roseboom, passed away July 28, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, following a tragic motor vehicle accident on Friday July 25, 2003.

Bill was born April 3, 1922, in Roseboom. The son of Oren and Edna (Smith) Thompson. A caring, thoughtful family man, and the beloved husband of Jean (Short) Thompson, who survives.

Bill was a self-employed farmer and for four years worked on Holoway Farms, Avon, Conn. He was later employed by Ensign Bickford Co. (EB) in Simsbury and Avon, Conn., as a security officer.

He also worked at manufacturing Primacord and safety fuses. Bill retired from EB following 20 years of faithful service. Upon returning to the Roseboom area he was employed by Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, in maintenance and retired from that in 1985.

Bill enjoyed being a "Jack of all Trades," solving a myriad of problems. He enjoyed many activities such as: photography, woodworking and gardening, to name a few. He loved NASCAR racing, both as a spectator and as a successful stock car driver for many years.

He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church of Cherry Valley, a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus No. 10968, Kateri Tekakwitha Council and a past member of the Roseboom Grange No. 1414.

Survivors, besides his wife, Jean Thompson, of Oneonta, include a daughter, Eleanor Pearo of Cherry Valley; a son, John Thompson and his wife, Rose of Collinsville, Conn.; a daughter-in-law, Georgiana Thompson of Southwick, Mass.; stepchildren, Don and Julie Phillips of Battleground, Wash., John and Sue Phillips of Fairbanks, Alaska, Mike and Pat Phillips of Kalama, Wash., Nancy and Gordon Clark of Cooperstown, Carol and John Niedzialkowski of Hartwick; 23 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Oren L. Thompson and his wife, Ruth of Gansevoort; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth B. Thompson; a son, Richard Thompson; and a daughter, Carol Thompson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at St. Thomas Church, Cherry Valley, with Father John Roos officiating.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.

Robert E. Timer

ROSEBOOM — Mr. Robert Edward Timer, 57, passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2003.

He was born Sept. 23, 1945, in Oneonta, the son of Edward and Lillian (Alpaugh) Timer.

On July 10, 1971, he married Martha-Jean Gilchrist in Nyack, who survives.

He grew up in Mount Vision and was a graduate of Laurens Central School. He did undergraduate and graduate work at the State University College at Oneonta.

Bob was a middle school science teacher for 33 years and the Title I Director at Richfield Springs Central School.

He was very active in education circles and was a past vice president of the Mohawk Regional Teacher Center, past president of the Richfield Springs Central School Faculty Association, a member of the advisory board for the National Institute of Health Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA), a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Education Advisory Committee, a co-author of the Hall of Fame educational program (America Grows Inning by Inning), and was on many committees and councils.

He received numerous accolades for excellence in teaching including two Educator of the Week Awards for Central New York and Channel Two's My Favorite Teacher Award.

Bob was a former member of the Science Teachers Association of New York, the New York State Association of Compensatory Educators and the National Science Teachers Association. He was a member of the New York State United Teachers and the American Federation of Teachers.

He was a past member and First Lieutenant of the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad, a former Red Cross CPR and Advanced First Aid instructor, a member of the Cornell Cooperative Extension, past community chairperson for the American Cancer Society, a member of the Board of Directors of the Roseboom Historical Association, a past member of the Town of Roseboom Planning Board, a former co-chairman of the Town of Roseboom Democratic Committee, a past member of the Otego Valley Grange, and a member of the Mount Vision Methodist Church.

Besides his wife, Martha-Jean Timer, of Roseboom, he is survived by his mother, Lillian Timer; a sister, Marian Jeffery, and her husband, Robert; a brother, Raymond Timer, and his wife, Melanie, and their children, Adam, Alexander and Katherine.

In addition he is survived by numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and nephews from the Timer, Alpaugh, Collins, Gilchrist, Marabeas and Morse families.

He will be remembered fondly by his many beloved students and friends at Richfield Springs Central School.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003,

at 2 p.m. in the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with

the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad or the charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.
