Robert Timer

ROSEBOOM — Funeral services for Mr. Robert Edward Timer, 57, who passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2003, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at the United Methodist Church, Main Street in Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley. For any information, call 264-8141.

Helen D. Webster

WALTON — Helen Dorothy Webster died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at her home in Walton. She was 82.

Mrs. Webster was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Brockport, to Henry and Catherine Yale Shugar.

She married Paul Webster in Bradford, Pa., on March 23, 1940. He predeceased her in 1967.

Mrs. Webster was a very devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed her great-grandchildren and attended many of their sports events to cheer them. She was an avid Yankees fan, and she loved to travel and camp.

Mrs. Webster is survived by her children, Anna (Elliot) Curles of Ashburn, Ga., Pauline (Ronald) Clum of Walton and Laurie Bonny of Owego; her brother, Donald (Mary Jane) Shugar of Owego; her grandchildren, Debbie, Bonnie, Michael, Andy, Amy, Paul, Katie, Ben and Jessie; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four sisters and five brothers.

There will be a funeral service for Mrs. Webster at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc., 102 Delaware St., Walton. Her family will receive friends from noon until service time.

Interment will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Albert Kull

COOPERSTOWN — There will be a "Celebration of Life" in the form of a memorial service and reception for Albert Kull on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Brookwood Gardens, Route 80. The family welcomes everyone who would like to attend.

June M. Brower

SIDNEY — June M. Brower, 58, of Sidney passed away Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Chenango Memorial Nursing Home in Norwich.

She was born Nov. 1, 1944, daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth Pitt Brower in Patterson, N.J.

June married John Brower in 1962, in Patterson, N.J.

She is survived by her husband, John Brower of Sidney; her daughter and son-in-law, Loreen and William Duffy of Sidney; six brothers, two sisters, and two grandchildren.

She is predeceased by a son, John Raymond Brower, and one sister.

Friends may call Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 1 to 3 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the Funeral Chapel.

Burial will be in Masonville Cemetery in Masonville.

Thelma P. Stevens

ONEONTA — Thelma P. Stevens, 80, of Oneonta and formerly of Clayton, passed away on Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born July 9, 1923, in Clayton, the daughter of Dexter and Sybil (Zimmerman) Meeks.

Thelma was a 1941 graduate of Clayton High School.

She moved to Oneonta in 1977, to work as a cook in the Fiesta Restaurant, which was owned and operated by her family. Before that, she worked as a cook in several restaurants in the Thousand Islands and also managed the Frontenac Crystal Springs Hotel (Tiffy's).

Thelma was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, and the Women of the Moose of Oneonta.

She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and friend to many.

She is survived by her children, Lawrence Meeks of Clayton, William C. Stevens of Walton, Janet Wise and her husband, Rodney, of Magnolia, Del., and Patricia Stevens of Oneonta; 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Karen L. Palmater, and a granddaughter, Priscilla Palmater; her brothers and sisters, Millard (Bud) Meeks, Robert J. Meeks Sr., Mildred Russell, Ella (Sis) Carey, and Marion Hall.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, at a time to be announced in a future edition of The Daily Star.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Cape Vincent.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the First United Methodist Church or Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Madalyn Hubiak

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Madalyn Coger Hubiak, 76, of Woodside Avenue entered into eternal rest on Friday morning, Aug. 1, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born on Oct. 10, 1926, in Pulaski, daughter Romain and Katherine Bond Coger.

Madalyn was raised in Utica and graduated high school there. She came to Richfield Springs in 1943. On June 16, 1945, she married Walter Hubiak in Schuyler Lake. A loving union of 55 years, Mr. Hubiak passed away on May 15, 2001.

From 1939 until April 1979, they owned and operated the Hubiak Dairy Farm on Chyle Road in the town of Springfield.

Mrs. Hubiak had a strong belief in God and was a devoted Methodist. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She will be truly missed.

Surviving are two sons, Walter T. and his wife, Marjorie Hubiak, and Ronald C. and his wife, Diane Hubiak, all of Richfield Springs; three sisters, Arline Wood of West Winfield, Marjorie Simonds of Schuyler Lake and Barbara and her husband, John Marriott, of West Winfield; two grandchildren, Chad Hubiak and Michelle Hubiak Hoag; five great-grandchildren, Elijah and Chayndell Hoke and Shailynne Hoag all of Richfield Springs, Michael and Lori Hubiak, along with their mother, Antoinette Hubiak; and several niece and cousins.

Besides her parents and husband, Walter, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Shannon Hubiak, and a sister, Thelma Sillman.

At Madalyn's request, there will be no calling hours and her funeral will be private.

A graveside service will take place at a later time when it's convenient for the family.

Expressions of sympathy may be made with donations to the Bassett Healthcare Cardiac Unit Building Fund, One Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

LaMont H. Faigle

WELLS BRIDGE — LaMont H. Faigle, 87, of 535 County Highway 4, Unadilla, passed away peacefully Friday morning, Aug. 1, 2003, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Aug. 18, 1915, in Scott Center, Pa., the son of the late William C. and Beulah Decker Faigle. On May 9, 1942, he married Frances Birdsall at the Wells Bridge Baptist Church, Wells Bridge. Mr. and Mrs. Faigle owned and operated a dairy farm in Wells Bridge.

He was a 60-year member and a deacon at the Wells Bridge Baptist Church. LaMont was a former member of the Unadilla Central School Board of Education and was a past president of the board.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances Faigle of Wells Bridge; three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley Cutting of Sidney, Linda and Kenneth Hamilton of Little River, S.C., and Carol and James Barnhart of Sidney; a brother and sister-in-law, Francis and Agnes Faigle of Bainbridge; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Alma Winkler of Binghamton, Velma Gassler of Bainbridge and Audrey and Maylan Keenan of Sidney; four grandchildren, Timothy and Connie Cutting, Scott and Cheryl Hamilton, Christopher J. Barnhart and Amy L. Barnhart; two great-grandchildren, Madisynn and Reece Cutting; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A brother, Wilford Faigle, and a son-in-law, John Cutting, predeceased him.

Friends are invited to call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel, with his family in attendance.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Steensma, pastor of the Wells Bridge Church, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Sand Hill Cemetery, Wells Bridge.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Wells Bridge Baptist Church, Church Street, Wells Bridge, NY 13859, or to The Skilled Nursing Facility, The Hospital, 43 Pearl St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Eleanor Dorosky

DAVENPORT — Eleanor M. Dorosky, 86, of Davenport, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at the Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

She was born Nov. 4, 1916, in Hobart, the daughter of DeForest and Etta (Merwin) Tryon.

A housewife and mother, her family was extremely important to her. They lived in the Hobart township and Davenport areas. She was married to Alexander A. Dorosky on March 31, 1940, in Highland. He predeceased her Jan. 28, 1981.

Eleanor was a Hobart Central School graduate. She loved to write poetry and often shared it with her family and friends. A sports enthusiast, the New York Yankees and NASCAR races were her favorite. Her hobby of crocheting created many keepsakes for her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna and her husband, William John Brockway, Davenport, and Janet Rifenbark, Oneonta; two sons, Ronald A. Dorosky and his wife, Beverly, Davenport, and Gary A. Dorosky and his wife, Ann of Roxbury; and a son-in-law, James Rifenbark, Schenevus; eight grandchildren, Lisa Maker, Schenevus, Steve Maker, Laurens, Marc Brockway, Davenport, Tracy and Frank Cobb, Schenevus, Julie Pietrefesa, Davenport, Cyndi and Bill Lawrence, Davenport, Matthew Brockway and Allison, Bloomville, Kelly Dorosky, Roxbury, Heather Rifenbark, and Gweyn Brockway, Davenport; six great-grandchildren, Ryan and Dylan Maker, Luke Brockway, Brittani Pietrefesa, Gavin and Alexis Cobb; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Davenport United Methodist Church, Davenport, with officiants, the Rev. Jerry Sutch, Davenport United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Frank MacCracken Sr. of Word of Faith Christian Family Center, Maryland. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will follow the service at Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Davenport First Responders.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Alton Grant Dunn

COOPERSTOWN — Alton Grant Dunn Jr., a Native Son of Cooperstown and an Eagle Scout, completed his work here on Aug. 2, 2003.

He was born on May 5, 1925, in the building that became the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown.The husband of Nancy Carpenter Dunn for 56 years, father of Alton Grant Dunn III, Bruce Carpenter Dunn Sr. and Cheryl Dunn Breslin, brother of Elizabeth (Betty) D. Eastman and her husband, Phillip, and a true and dedicated friend and volunteer to all he knew, Dunnie passed on at home with family and in the wonderful care of Hospice.

He is also survived by daughters-in-law, Sandra Dunn and Patricia Dunn; son-in-law, Daniel Breslin; brother-in-law, E. Edwin Carpenter; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two nephews; four nieces; 12 grand nieces and nephews; two great-grandnieces; Masonic Brothers and many friends.

A grandson, Augustus, his sister-in-law and her husband, Shirley Carpenter and Gordon J. Fowler, and a sister-in-law, Dorothy F. Carpenter, predeceased him.

A 1942, graduate of Cooperstown High School, its Alumni Association President in 1961 and the Membership Chairman of the P.T.A. between 1963 and 1964, Dunnie attended St. Lawrence University, Rennsalear Polytechnic Institute and Cornell University, where he received the degrees of Bachelors in Electronics and Doctor of Laws.

He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Philippine Sea, was admitted to practice law in New York in 1949 and was a practicing attorney in Cooperstown until his retirement in 2002. He was a general insurance agent from 1949 until 1971 at the Cooperstown agency of Dunn & Dunn, an M.I.B. Hospital switchboard operator from 1972 to 1986, and owner of Arrow Abstract Company.

He was the Supervisor of the Town of Otsego and a member of the Otsego County Board of Supervisors from 1962 to 1969, serving several terms on the Otsego County Mental Health Board.

Brother Dunn was made an Entered Apprentice of the Otsego Lodge No. 138 of Free and Accepted Masons in 1949, and was raised to the degree of Master Mason on Dec. 6 of that year. Having studied additional degrees, he was the W. Master of the Lodge in 1958; then Secretary and Secretary-Treasurer of the Trustees; and was later the Chaplain and Historian. Brother Dunn chaired the Masonic Committee that organized community hikes in the memory of "Cap. Smith." He was awarded the Grand Lodge Distinguished Service Award and was appointed to the position of the Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Missouri near the Grand Lodge of New York in 1996. As a member of the Otsego Chapter No. 26 of the Royal Arch Masons he was first High Priest in 1959 and in 1996. As a member of the Otsego Commandery No. 76 of the Knights Templar, he served as Prelate in 1996. He also was a member of the Farmers Lodge No. 553 at Edmeston.

Dunnie was a Christian with membership in the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, was the Moderator of the Otsego Baptist Association and Vice President of the Cooperstown Council of Churches during 1957-59, and was the President of the Men's Council from 1962 until 1964. He was a member of the Board of Christian Education, a Trustee, a Deacon, a Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher, a Baptist Youth Fellowship Advisor, a member of the board of directors for the Upstate Home for Children, and he sang in the Baptist mixed choir since 1937.

Mr. Dunn was a Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop No. 12 from 1949 to 50, the Scout Master of Cub Scout Pack No. 12 between 1958 and 1960, and continued his Scout leadership in Boy Scout Troop No. 54 as Representative, Camping Chairman, Advancement Officer and Instructor through 1963. Also from 1961 until 1963, he was the Auditor and a Council Member of the Indian Hills Girl Scout Council.

Dunnie was a life member of the Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Department, joining in 1955, and was the Foreman of Engine Co. No. 2 between 1961 and 1963, and the Firemen's Carnival Chairman in 1960. He was among the first members fully trained and certified as a member of the AirPack (SCBA) Rescue Squad.

He was an Honorary Member of the Fly Creek Fire Department. Dunnie was a Charter Member, Captain and Life Member of the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, founded in 1970.

Dunnie was a past Adjutant and Commander and Life Member of the Clark F. Simmons Post 579 American Legion, a former manager of the Junior Legion Baseball Team, former Director of the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce, a Rotarian for whom he served as Youth Committee Chairman in 1963, a charter member in 1951, and past President and Secretary of the Cooperstown Lions Club, the Treasurer of the Salvation Army local service unit for 20 years; a Red Cross Life Saver, Annual Solicitor and more than 18 gallon blood donor; a bass in the Cooperstown Men's Chorus; and a saxophone instrumentalist in the Cooperstown Community Band since 1938.

A statement from the family reads, "We miss him dearly here and now, and welcome our chances to recognize his example in every act of kindness and honor we will witness hereafter." The family wishes to express its sincere gratefulness for the kindness and care given by the professionals and volunteers of Hospice.

Alton G. Dunn Jr., was, himself, a former Hospice Volunteer.

For persons wishing to make a donation in his memory, the family recommends the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 1, Cooperstown, NY, 13326 or a charity of their choice.

A public memorial service including a Masonic tribute will be held at the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, 93 Elm St., at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, followed by a graveside service, with military honors presented by the American Legion at Lakewood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Warren H. Cole

SIDNEY — Warren H. Cole, 73, passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at his home surrounded by his family following a long illness.

He was born Sept. 17, 1929, in Alpine, N.J., the son of Frederick and Dorothy Cole.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jane A. Cole; their five children and spouses, Linda and Bill Thomas of Sidney Center, Brian and Debbie Cole of Cumming, Ga., Valerie and David Salton of Vestal, Gail and Scott Lamond of Port Crane, and Kevin and Michaele Cole of Chester, N.H.

Warren is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Jim Thomas and wife, Heather, Gary and Matthew Thomas, Daniel, Chelsea and Amy Cole, Tia and Tamara Salton, Kelliann, Ryan, and Cody Warren Lamond, Meghan and Alycia Cole.

Surviving also are Warren's sister, Ethel Spieldenner, and husband, George of Corinth; and brother-in-law, William Westervelt Sr., of Bel Air, Md. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers, Gifford and William Cole; and sisters, Janet Westervelt and Marjorie Fitzpatrick.

Warren was an Army veteran of the Korean War from 1951-1953.

His woodworking career brought him to Unadilla Silo Company in 1968, where he retired as vice president of Production at Una-Lam in 1993.

He was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church, Sidney American Legion, Sidney Elks Lodge, Sidney Community Foundation and the Rotary Club of Sidney.

As a Rotarian, he was honored as a "Paul Harris Fellow" and awarded the "Rotarian of the Year" in 2001.

The "Warren Cole Covered Bridge" was named in his honor as a tribute to his tireless volunteerism at the newly formed walking trail.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel in Sidney.

Harold E. Duffy

UNADILLA — Harold E. Duffy, 84, of Unadilla, passed away Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

He was born June 8, 1919, son of the late Charles and Mary Duffy in San Francisco, Calif.

Harold served his country in the United States Army from 1938 to 1945.

He was a past member of the Afton VFW.

Harold is survived by his niece, Henrietta Dolan, Unadilla; her two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Christine Dolan, Rhode Island, and Joseph and Nancy Dolan, Staten Island, and their children, Kate and Jennifer.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dora; and his nephew, Thomas Dolan.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 5 2003, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Afton.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel in Sidney.

Sanford Fancher

WARNERVILLE — Sanford Dewitt Fancher, 97, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill after a brief illness.

Mr. Fancher was born April 1, 1906, in West Fulton and was the son of James R. and Iola (Wheeler) Fancher.

He was a lifelong area resident and owned a farm in Seward for many years. He also worked for Harder Refrigeration for 34 years, the former Community Hospital of Cobleskill for five years, and the Flanders Research Farm in Sharon Springs.

Mr. Fancher was predeceased by his wife, Ella (King) Fancher; three sisters, Ethel Clapper, Hazel Myers VanDerWerker and Bernice A. Fancher; two brothers, Arkel and Orin Fancher; one niece; four nephews; and one great-grandchild.

He is survived by three daughters, Bernice I. and Paul Andrews of Schenectady, Beatrice E. and John Watson of Somersworth, N.H., and Elizabeth I. and Thomas Mulligan of Northport, Fla.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; his housekeeper and companion, Ruth Graves; and caregiver, Jennie Erwin; and many caring neighbors.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, with the Rev. Neil Irwin officiating. Calling hours will be Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Summit Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the West Fulton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 40, West Fulton, NY 12194 or to the charity of one's choice.
