Theodore Schulle

WORCESTER — Theodore Schulle, 93, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003. He died at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Schulle; a daughter, Anita Cronemeyes and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Private services will be held here, and the burial will take place at the White Chapel Memorial Park, North Tonawanda.

Funeral arrangements are by the E. J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Lavern 'Vern' Charles

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. — Lavern "Vern" Charles, 81, of Casa Grande, Ariz., died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, in Casa Grande, where he had lived for seven years.

He was born Sept. 18, 1921, in Walton, son of Richard and Pearl Charles.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army. He received the European, African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Medal of Good Conduct.

He retired as a carpenter from Hartwick College in Oneonta. He relocated to Casa Grande, in 1996, where he worked for Desert Shades, owned and operated by his family.

He enjoyed all types of woodworking and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Juanita Charles of Casa Grande; son, Scott Charles of Rochester; daughters, Doreen Brock of Casa Grande and Darlene Couse, of Tombstone; brother, Kaveda Charles of Niagara Falls; sisters, Eva Buttons of Rockdale and Dottie Haynes of Guilford; two grandsons, Chauncey and Shane Couse of Oneonta; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Pearl Charles, and his brother, Russell Charles.

Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, families have requested donations be made to: RTA Hospice and Palliative Care, 1675 E. Monument Plaza Dr., Casa Grande, AZ 85222 (520) 421-7143.

Nelson Harrington

OTEGO — Nelson E. Harrington, 82, of Otego, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

He was born April 18, 1921, in Laurens, the son of Clayton and Ella (Colgrove) Harrington.

Nelson graduated from Laurens Central School. In 1953, he moved to Otego.

He married Marion A. Colburn on Oct. 31, 1941, in Cherry Valley.

Nelson was a machine repairman at Bendix Corp. in Sidney for 35 years until his retirement. He enjoyed his gardening, his home, spending time with his family and square dancing.

Together with his wife he was a member of the Building Blocks Square Dancing Club and the Covered Bridge Rounds Club. He was also a member of the Otego United Methodist Church and a former member of the Odd Fellows in Otego.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Marion A. Harrington of Oneonta; two daughters and a son-in-law, Dorothy and Robert Lingner of Oneonta and Kathy Cockcroft and Charles Marcellus of Unadilla; one son and a daughter-in-law, Thomas and Susan Harrington of Herkimer; four grandchildren, Dennis R. and Lisa Trask of Utica, Lorraine S. Trask of Fairbanks, Alaska, Stephen E. and Lynne Harrington of Herkimer and Jodi L. Harrington of Herkimer; four stepgrandchildren, John, Roberta, Nancy Lingner, and Deborah Cole; two stepgreat-grandsons; and stepsister-in-law Wanda Perry; two great-grandchildren, Andrew S. and Nicholas D. Harrington of Herkimer; one sister, Agnes Sullivan of Cooperstown, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Nelson was predeceased by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lila and Carlton Southern and Virginia and Gerald Place; and one stepbrother, James Perry.

Calling hours will be offered on Sunday, Aug. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 25, at the Otego United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Beven Long and Rev. Fred Albrecht officiating.

Burial will follow in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Northeastern New York Leatherstocking Region Office, State University at Oneonta, Oneonta, NY 13820, in loving memory of Nelson E. Harrington.

Nelson's family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Delaware County Countryside Care Center and Catskill Area Hospice for the loving care and compassion given to Nelson.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

Leslie W. Decker

ONEONTA — Leslie W. Decker died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born April 22, 1939, in Cooperstown.

He was a graduate of Cooperstown High School. Leslie entered the Navy and served for four years.

He was united in marriage to Janet Decker on Oct. 6, 1963, in Oneonta. Leslie worked for the D&H Railroad for 32 years and retired as care foreman in February of 1996.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 465 of Oneonta, the Ponderosa Rod and Gun Club, and the Franklin Mountain Hunting Club. A very avid hunter and fisherman, he was in his element in the outdoors. If forced indoors, he enjoyed Bingo and going to Turning Stone. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Leslie is survived by his wife, Janet Decker; children, Wendy Decker of Oneonta, Mark Decker and companion, Cora Miller, of Oneonta, Eric and wife, Kelly Decker, of Laurens, Jeff Decker and companion, Stephanie Weaver, of Oneonta, and Melissa Decker of Oneonta; four grandchildren, Trevor and Cortney Decker, Whitney Zack and Lauryn Decker; a sister, Barbara Davies of Stittville; brothers-in-law, Thomas Muroski and Lynwood Simonds, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Mary Muroski and Irene Simonds.

Calling hours with the family will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Following will be a gathering at the Moose Lodge in Oneonta with the service of remembrance at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Leslie's honor to his spouse, Janet Decker, 221 Gifford Hill Rd., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Charles Somelofski

ANDES — Charles Somelofski, 78, of Andes, died at Albany Medical Center on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003.

Charles was born Aug. 7, 1925, in Glen Cove, the son of Alexander and Josephine Somelofski.

He was married for 53 years to Dolores Filasky, who survives.

He had been a resident of the town of Andes for 26 years, having retired from Grumman Aerospace on Long Island. He operated the Tremperskill Country Store with his wife until his death. Known as the Fishing King of the Catskills, Charles' claim to fame was having caught the largest brown trout in Pepacton Reservoir at 22-plus pounds. He was also deputy town clerk of Andes and a former member of Margaretville American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Dolores; a son, Charles A. (Sonny) of Andes; daughter, Mary Ann Todd of Roxbury; brother, Al Somelofski of Oyster Bay; three sisters, Josephine Dobenski and Elizabeth Grodowski of Glen Head and Wilma Finnegan of Florida. Also surviving is a grandson, John Rodd in the U.S. Marine Corps, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 25, at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes, with the Rev. James J. McDevitt, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Shavertown Cemetery.

Memorials to the Dialysis Center of Kingston in the name of Charles Somelofski are appreciated.

Linnea Anderson

ONEONTA — Linnea Anderson died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born Sept. 4, 1915, in Brooklyn, to Frank and Anna Nystrom.

She married Gustav Rudolph Anderson at Augustanna Lutheran Church on Staten Island on Oct. 3, 1936.

They farmed together for many years in the Oneonta area until Rudolph's death in October of 1975.

Linnea was a faithful member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Laurens and was active in the women's club of the church.

Linnea is survived by her sons, Rudolph "Rudy" Anderson and his wife, Judith, of North Providence, R.I., and Donald Frank Anderson of Walnut Creek, Calif.; two grandchildren, Brian Anderson and Wendy Tarantola; and four great-grandchildren, Brian, Brandon, Megan and Katie Anderson.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband and a sister, Agnes Tait.

Funeral services for Linnea will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 25, at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with calling hours from noon until service time.

Interment will follow at Mount Vision Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Bud Pylinski

CUMBERLAND, Va. — Bud Pylinski, 71, of Cumberland, and formerly of Edmeston, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Marian L. Pylinski; five children, Donna Foster of Virginia, Albert Pylinski Jr. of Edmeston, Thad Pylinski, Betsy Boova, and Laurence Pylinski, all of Virginia; one brother, Edward Pylinski; two sisters, Helen Mockovciak and Janina Piazza, all of Edmeston; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Monday in the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Highway, Route 60, Powhatan, Va.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the home of Albert Pylinski Jr., 8 North St., Edmeston.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Richard J. Potter

UNADILLA — Richard J. Potter Sr. of Unadilla, and formerly of Mount Upton, went into the loving arms of his Savior at home with his wife, Susan, and son Michael at his side, Aug. 25, 2003.

He was born Sept. 20, 1935, son of the late Cecelia Thorogood and Harry Potter in Brooklyn.

Richard retired from the NYPD in 1979 and moved to Mount Upton in 1980, and later moved to Unadilla.

He was the loving husband of Susan, they were married Jan. 8, 1955. He was the beloved father of Lynda, and her husband, Charles Janovsky of Mount Upton, Barbara, and her husband, David Rickerson of Westerville, Ohio, Richard J. Potter of New Berlin, and Michael H. Potter of Unadilla. He was the beloved brother of Dolores (Potter), and her husband, Sal Sgambati of Wilmington, N.C., Gloria (Potter), and her husband, Raymond Pfieffer of David, Fla., and Carol (Potter) Walrath of Fairbanks, Alaska. He was also the beloved grandfather of Ted, Stacey, and Charles Janovsky, Jessica Rickerson, Caren and Heather Potter; and dear friend of 45 years to Ralph Ostraco.

He was predeceased by a sister, Cecelia Potter.

Richard proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1952-1956.

He was a member of the NYC PBA, member of the Mount Upton Lions Club, NYC 10-13 Association, former member of the Bayside Masonic Lodge, past president of the Maplewood Cemetery Association and member of the Eastern and Western Tumbler Pigeon Club.

Friends may call Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be held Friday at the Christ Church, Route 51, Gilbertsville, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Scott Harding officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Upton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Walter Christensen

COOPERSTOWN — Walter Joseph Christensen, of Cooperstown, died Aug. 26, 2003, at the age of 86.

He was born on April 3, 1917, in Brooklyn, to Joseph Severn and Wanda (Neilsen) Christensen.

He married Janet Mary Margison on July 17, 1940, in Liberty.

"Chris," as he was affectionately called, moved with his parents from Brooklyn to Liberty, where he was raised and graduated from high school.

His first employment was with his uncle's sign painting business, but he later enrolled in the New York State Police Academy, where he distinguished himself in the State Police Radio School. He proudly wore the uniform of the State Police for over 10 years before he and another Trooper opened the G & C Hardware Store in Gouverneur, which they owned and operated until retirement.

An unselfish and loving man, Chris was always there for family and friends. He had a great passion for the outdoors, especially fishing, swimming and boating, and while he loved painting and photography, he also had an uncanny eye for antiques and could turn any old piece of furniture into a cherished treasure.

Of the Episcopal faith, Mr. Christensen was a member of Christ Church in Cooperstown.

Mr. Christensen is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janet, of Cooperstown; one daughter, Stephanie Christensen of Cooperstown; and two grandchildren, Tamae Memole and Peter Matsuo, both of the Albany area.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Barbara Ann, who died at birth.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at Christ Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, Rector, officiating.

The committal service and burial will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, in Riverside Cemetery in Gouverneur, with Fr. Daniel Chapin, pastor of St. James Catholic Church in Gouverneur, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Martin Obergefell

UTICA — Mr. Martin C. Obergefell, 46, passed away Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital after a long illness. His daughter and son were by his side.

He was born Feb. 19, 1957, in Oneonta, the son of Martin and Bernice Obergefell.

Marty attended Laurens Central School and then worked seven years for Seeley's Ceramics on River Street in Oneonta.

He moved to Florida, living in Pinellis Park and Jacksonville for approximately 20 years before moving to Utica to live with his daughter and to be nearer to his family and stepchildren.

Marty is survived by his daughter, Deonna of Utica; his son, Justin of Kannapolis, N.C.; stepchildren, Bethany and Christopher McCall of Utica; his mother, Bernice (Bea) Obergefell of Delhi; three brothers, Danny (Sue) Obergefell of Oneonta, Neil (Linda) Obergefell of Oneonta, and Barry Obergefell of Hector; four sisters, Sharon (Elbert) Brown of Oneonta, Sande Obergefell of Plattsburgh, Bonnie (Jim) Francisco of Delhi, and Barbara (Dan) Hotaling of Liverpool; and several nieces and nephews.

Marty was predeceased by his father, Martin J. Obergefell, in 1997.

Cremation took place in Rochester, and at Marty's request there will be no funeral or calling hours.

Burial and celebration of Marty's life will be private.

Robert Anderson

MILFORD — There will be a memorial service to celebrate the life of "Bob" Anderson for the friends and family on Sept. 13, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at the Milford United Methodist Church, with Mr. Albert C. Bullard officiating.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Elizabeth Shafer

ONEONTA — Elizabeth Ann Shafer died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Oct. 14, 1913, to Elizabeth (Mocko) and Stephen Surin in Little Falls.

She attended schools in Schenectady county, Teacher's Training Class in Cobleskill, and graduated from Plattsburgh Normal School and, also, attended SUNY in Oneonta.

She married Verner J. Shafer on June 27, 1942. He was the owner and operator of V.J. Shafer Hardware Store in New Berlin, for many years until his death on May 2, 1964.

Elizabeth (Betty) is survived by her two children, Karen E. (Shafer) Rollins of Laurens, and James V. Shafer of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, Christopher A. Rollins of Wynantskill, Rebecca Ann (Rollins) Clemens of Pittsburgh, Pa., Molly E. (Shafer) Carroll of Charlotte, N.C., and Michael J. Shafer of Charlotte, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren, Connor M. Rollins and Katherine E. Rollins of Wynantskill, and Katherine E. Carroll of Charlotte, N.C. Elizabeth is also survived by a brother, Daniel Surin of Duanesburg; two nieces, MaryAnn Petricca of Scotia, and Phyllis Ziobroski and husband, Ron; nephew, Paul Allen and his wife, Joan Surin, of Stafford, Va.; niece, Elizabeth Susman of New York City and Fly Creek; and grandniece and nephews, Annmarie, Tom, Danny, Michael, John, David, Stephen and Joseph.

Elizabeth taught in Schenectady County Schools for nine years, and 13 years in New Berlin Central School after the death of her husband. She retired in June 1978.

Elizabeth belonged to St. Theresa's Catholic Church in New Berlin and later St. Mary's in Oneonta.

A funeral service will be held at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at 1 p.m., with Fr. Case of St. Theresa's.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Oneonta, in Elizabeth's memory.
