Leona M. Ackley

ONEONTA — Leona M. Ackley, 90, of Oneonta, died at home on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, after a lengthy illness.

She was born June 28, 1913, in Meredith, the daughter of Erwin and Ida (Peck) Johnson.

She married Harry C. Ackley on July 16, 1936, in Meridale.

Leona was valedictorian of her high school in Treadwell. She graduated from Oneonta Normal School and became a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse and then in Treadwell. She later went back to school at the State University in Oneonta. She then taught for 20 years in Harpursville.

Leona worked as a polling adviser for the First Ward at Valleyview School, for the Board of Elections for more than 15 years. She enjoyed working as a volunteer at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital on weekends, while still teaching and then through the week after her retirement in 1977 until 1990. She was a member of NEA. She attended the Red Door Presbyterian Church in Oneonta. She loved working in her garden, traveling with friends, crocheting and doing crossword puzzles.

She is survived by one son, Roger and his wife, Carol, of Oneonta; five grandchildren, Roger II and his wife, Maryellen, Rodney and his wife, Lara, Patricia (who took great pride in caring for Gramma these past 11 years of her illness) and her husband, Richard Rock Jr., all of Oneonta, Debra Mayhook of West Brookville, and Lisa and her husband, Joe, McGrath of Joliet, Ill.; eight great-grandchildren, Raven and Devin Rock, Roger, Ryan and Riley Ackley, Mel and Jade Ackley and Mark Mayhook; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a son, Dennis, in 2002; her husband, Harry in 1968; and three brothers, Wilbur, Bruce and Milton Johnson.

The family would like to give special thanks to Helen Martin, who cared for Leona for nine years, in the evenings. We also want all the family and friends who helped care for her to know it was lovingly appreciated.

The family will be receiving friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta. A graveside service will be at noon Thursday, at Plains Cemetery in Oneonta, with the Rev. Norman Moran officiating.

Those who wish may make contributions to Dollars for Scholars, care of Oneonta High School, P.O. Box 1083, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Julia M. Finn

ONEONTA — Julia M. Finn, 89, of Oneonta, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, after a lengthy illness.

She was born on Oct. 20, 1913, in North Bergen, N.J., the daughter of Martin and Julia (Murphy) Stuhrmann.

She married Jules Finn in 1942 in California.

Julia was a secretary at Bugbee School and Oneonta State Teachers College. She moved to Oneonta in 1953, from New Jersey.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church, the Rosary Society and the New York Civil Service Employees Association.

She is survived by her sons, Dennis Finn of Brooklyn, and Donald and wife, Sandra, of Blauvelt; grandchildren, Susanne and Steven of Blauvelt, and Kelly and Kevin of Florida; great-grandchild, Abigail Lynch of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers, Harold and Edward; and sisters, Ethel, Elvera and Evelyn.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 2, 2003, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at St. Mary's Church in Oneonta, with Fr. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in New Jersey.

Contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Margaret E. Ruff

DELHI — Margaret Edgerton Ruff, 91, of Delhi, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton.

She was born Sept. 14, 1911, on Hamden Hill in the town of Delhi, to Augustus and Minnie Wannemacher Edgerton.

She married Oscar Ruff in Delhi, on June 2, 1934.

She attended rural school at Frasers and graduated from Delaware Academy in 1928, and Oneonta Normal School in 1932.

She taught at Holmes Hollow district school for six years and in the Hamden School for six years. In 1954, she started teaching first grade at the Townsend School in Walton, where she stayed for 18 years, retiring in 1972.

Margaret was a devoted member of the DeLancey United Presbyterian Church since 1925, where she served in many capacities. She had been a Sunday School teacher, superintendent of Sunday School and sponsored a youth group of the Church. She was a deacon and a member of the Women's Association. She also was the leader of a 4-H Club and for many years was herself, the oldest living 4-H member of Delaware County. Margaret was a charter member of the DeLancey Garden Club and the Hamden Senior Citizens.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Adolph (Doris) Ruff of Halcottsville; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be calling hours in Delhi at the MacArthur Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Sept. 2, 2003, with the family in attendance.

Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are invited, will be held in the DeLancey United Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Delhi.

Memorial contributions may be made to the DeLancey United Presbyterian Church.

Barbara J. Wickenhofer

LAURENS — Barbara J. Wickenhofer, 87, of Laurens died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Nov. 30, 1915, in Oneonta, the daughter of Ernest and Ruth (Fiske) Preston.

She married Wesley S. Wickenhofer on Jan. 1, 1936, in Oneonta. Mr. Wickenhofer predeceased her on April 11, 2003.

Barbara graduated from Oneonta High School.

She had lived in Laurens for 55 years prior to moving to Gardenview Adult Home, Otego.

At one time, she worked at J.J. Newberry, the Oneonta Nursing Home and at the Laurens Central School.

She enjoyed making cakes and candies, bowling, sewing, knitting, repairing dolls, and most of all spending time with her family.

Barbara was a member of the Bible Baptist Church, Mount Vision, TOPS Inc. and the Susquehanna Valley Grange.

She is survived by her four daughters and sons-in-law, Janette Barkman of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Caryl and Herbert Neer of Laurens, Betty Roser of Smithville, Texas, and Sandy and Donald Dungey of Earlville; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one nephew and his wife, Eugene and Dolly Bordinger of Palm Coast, Fla.; and one niece, Joanne White of Bunnell, Fla.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Ernest and Ruth Preston; her sister, Marjorie Biegler; and her granddaughter, Peggy Neer.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Christopher Ellis, pastor of the Bible Baptist Church in Mount Vision, officiating. Burial will follow in the Elm Row Cemetery, Laurens. Calling hours will be offered on Wednesday at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until service time.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Bible Baptist Church, P.O. Box 606, Mt. Vision, NY 13810 in loving memory of Barbara J. Wickenhofer.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

David L. Barrow

ONEONTA — David L. Barrow, 49, of Oneonta, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Nov. 11, 1953, in New Haven, Conn., the son of Loyd M. and Elizabeth (Fagley) Barrow.

He married Candace E. Wood on Sept. 30, 1978.

David was employed by J.C. Penney Co. for 27 years, and for the past six years was the manager at J.C. Penney in Oneonta, where he worked up to one week prior to his death.

He was a graduate of Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Va. He was a member of the Hampden, Maine Kiwanis.

David loved golfing, bowling, snow mobiling and boating. He also enjoyed NASCAR racing, and the summers spent at the home of his parents on Moosehead Lake in northern Maine.

He is survived by his wife, Candace E. Barrow, of Oneonta; his children, Shane and Stephanie Barrow of Oneonta; his mother, Elizabeth (Billie) Barrow of Port Charlotte, Fla.; his sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Dennis Sakos of Millington, N.J.; a brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Susan Barrow of Macon, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Tracy Kellas and her husband, Jeff, of East Haven, Conn.; an uncle, Harold Barrow of Winston-Salem, N.C.; an aunt, Evelyn Jackson of California; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special friend, Paul Gerardo of Midlothian, Va.

He was predeceased by his father, Loyd Barrow on March 3, 2002.

A service to celebrate the life of David L. Barrow will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at 10 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Helen E. Leach

ONEONTA — Helen E. Leach, 89, of Oneonta, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta after a lengthy illness.

She was born on Jan. 24, 1914, in Richfield Springs, the daughter of Arthur and Bessie (Westcott) Quackenbush.

She married Egbert Leach on June 20, 1937, in Unadilla.

Mrs. Leach was a former employee of the Oneonta Chamber of Commerce. She was a lifelong area resident.

Helen will long be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, parent, sister and grandmother, as well as the lady who offered special kindness to animals and people in need of a little extra love and attention.

Helen was an unassuming contributor to the well-being of others. Because she was always approachable and non-judgmental, people — young and old — would arrive on her doorstep to seek her counsel. She listened with an empathetic ear and was a master at helping others put their concerns in a clearer perspective.

Helen was as generous as she was kind. An avid reader, she was often reading several books at once and belonged to multiple book clubs. As much as she enjoyed reading, she also enjoyed donating her books to shut-ins and other less-fortunate people.

The family is very thankful to the wonderful staff at Fox Nursing Home for the warm and loving attention they gave to Helen during the time she found herself in their care.

Helen is survived by her husband, Egbert; and three sons, Myron E. (Mick) and his wife, Vivian, of Palmyra, Va., Richard and Karen of Athens, and Gerald and Noreen of New Berlin, Wis.; four grandchildren, Judith Mancey, James Leach, Richard Leach and Nicole Ardito; four great-grandchildren, Ryan, Michael, Seth and Christen; one sister, Mrs. William B. (Virginia) Smith Jr., of Branford, Conn.; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Judith.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at 12:30 p.m. at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith Thistle, A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital chaplain, officiating. Burial will follow in Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service time.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Ellen Louise Regan

BAINBRIDGE — Ellen Louise Regan, 48, of 17 Front St., Bainbridge, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, Aug. 29, 2003, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 4, 1955, in Endicott, the daughter of Darwin and Beatrice Aldrich Taft.

On Sept. 21, 1974, she married Timothy J. Regan in Bainbridge.

Ellen served on the special education committee at the Bainbridge-Guilford Schools.

Her loving spirit, generosity and compassion will fondly be remembered. She loved and collected antiques.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Timothy J. Regan, of Bainbridge; loving daughter, Jessica Diane Regan of Bainbridge; parents, Darwin and Beatrice Taft of Bainbridge; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Darlene and Richie Alexander of Belmont, N.C., Nancy Rae Taft of Rochester, Nancy Jean Reynolds of Harpursville, and Lois Thompson of Japan; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Terry and Tammy Taft of Wellsville, David Taft of Endicott, and Richard and Charisse Taft of Pennington, N.J.; special cousin, Jeanette Durler, Sidney; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A sister, Kathryn Arend predeceased her.

A service to celebrate Ellen's life will be held at 8 p.m. today, Sept. 2, 2003, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Linda King Watkins, pastor of St. Peters Church in Bainbridge, officiating.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Tuesday at the funeral chapel with her family in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Burial will be at the family's convenience in the St. Peter's Church Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.
