Paul K. Barnard

BAINBRIDGE — Paul Kenneth Barnard, 72, of Bainbridge, passed away Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003.

Paul was born Oct. 11, 1930, in Coventry, the son of Floyd and Ruth (Hendrickson) Barnard. He grew up in Afton, and attended Afton Central School. He spent one year in Los Angeles, Calif., returning to Afton, when his father died.

He worked in construction for Ken Howe and then with his brother, Glenn went into business on their own.

In 1951, he married Doris Reynolds of Sidney, and in 1959, moved to Bainbridge. He retired in 1995.

Paul was an avid golfer and played many of the area courses.

Paul is survived by his wife, Doris, of Bainbridge; two sons, Stacey Glenn Barnard and Carol (Cary) Paul Barnard, both of Bainbridge; a brother, Glenn Barnard of Bainbridge; four grandchildren, Serena McIntyre, Norwich, Shannon Sue Barnard, Sidney, Kathleen Lynn Barnard, Bainbridge, and Erik Barnard of Bainbridge; two great-grandchildren, Alica and Kyle McIntyre of Norwich; and a nephew, aunts, uncle and cousins.

Paul was predeceased by his sister, Ethel in 1944; and his son, Lynn Charles Barnard in 1983.

Upon his request, Paul will be cremated; there will be no calling hours.

Graveside services in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge will be at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Edward Richards

ONEONTA — Edward J. Richards, 81, of Oneonta, passed away at The Meadows in Cooperstown, on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003.

He was born Nov. 17, 1921, in Oneonta, the son of Edward and Iva (Hanson) Richards.

Edward was a lifelong area resident. He was a retired employee of the State University College at Oneonta, and was a member of the West End Community Baptist Church.

He is survived by his brother, Rodney Richards of Oneonta; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Keith VanDewerker, pastor of the West End Community Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ellen Louise Regan

BAINBRIDGE — Ellen Louise Regan, 48, of 17 Front St., Bainbridge, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, Aug. 29, 2003, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 4, 1955, in Endicott, the daughter of Darwin and Beatrice Aldrich Taft.

On Sept. 21, 1974, she married Timothy J. Regan in Bainbridge.

Ellen served on the special education committee at the Bainbridge-Guilford Schools.

Her loving spirit, generosity and compassion will fondly be remembered. She loved and collected antiques.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Timothy J. Regan, of Bainbridge; loving daughter, Jessica Diane Regan of Bainbridge; parents, Darwin and Beatrice Taft of Bainbridge; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Darlene and Richie Alexander of Belmont, N.C., Nancy Rae Taft of Rochester, Nancy Jean Reynolds of Harpursville, and Lois Thompson of Japan; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Terry and Tammy Taft of Wellsville, David Taft of Endicott, and Richard and Charisse Taft of Pennington, N.J.; special cousin, Jeanette Durler, Sidney; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A sister, Kathryn Arend predeceased her.

A service to celebrate Ellen's life will be held at 8 p.m. today, Sept. 2, 2003, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Linda King Watkins, pastor of St. Peters Church in Bainbridge, officiating.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Tuesday at the funeral chapel with her family in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Burial will be at the family's convenience in the St. Peter's Church Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.

June Gale Pierce

GUILFORD — June Gale Pierce, 63, of Guilford, passed away Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born June 22, 1940, daughter of Neldon Pierce and Gertrude Dewey in South New Berlin.

June attended and graduated from Mount Upton Central School.

She loved the outdoors; June enjoyed any activity that took her there. She was an avid hunter and was a baseball fanatic. June was a gifted woodcarver and was a member of the Chenango County Woodcarvers Association. She was also a past lecturer for the Algonquin Grange in Bainbridge and a member of the Chenango County 4-H Club.

She is survived by her mother, Gertrude Pierce Boyd, Guilford; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Daryl Kiel, Otego; two grandchildren, Jared and Joshua Kiel, Otego; sister and brother-in-law, Leota and Charles Hendrix, Mount Upton; niece, Brenda and Mark Craver, Mount Upton; two grandnephews, Jeremiah and Luman Craver; one great-grandniece, Kyleigh Pedersen; one great-grandnephew, Cameron Craver; one brother, Douglas Pierce, Guilford; three stepsisters; her faithful companion, Princess; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

There will be no visitation.

Funeral and committal services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Upton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Guilford Emergency Squad or the Chenango County Woodcarvers Association.

Donald A. Shields

CASTLETON — Donald A. Shields, 70, of Castleton, died Aug. 30, 2003, at Albany Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Harpersfield, he lived in Castleton for more than 43 years.

Don was a Marine Corps veteran and served in Korea where he was awarded the Purple Heart with one Gold Star along with numerous other service medals.

He was a truck driver for the Mobil Oil Co. in Albany for 33 years before retiring. He also worked for the town of Schodack as a building inspector for 16 years and also served on the town's planning and zoning boards.

Don was a member of the VFW post in Castleton, a member of the Exxon/Mobil Retirees Club of Albany, a communicant of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, and a past Boy Scout leader.

He is survived by his wife, Jacquelin (Logan) Shields; a son, Gary Shields (Claudia) of Nassau; and three daughters, Sharon Adams (James) and Patricia Carlucci, both of Castleton, and Penny Bartlett (David) of Colonie. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Michael and Christie Shields, Christopher and Kelly Adams, Chantel Carlucci and Ian Bartlett; one brother, Clinton Tucker of Stanford; and one sister, Marie Erickson of Rotterdam Junction.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. today, Sept. 2, 2003, from the Ray Funeral Home, 59 Seaman Ave., Castleton. Interment will follow at the Horizon View Cemetery.

Relatives and friends called Monday evening.

Gladys Scrivener

PITTSFIELD — Gladys M. Scrivener, 72, of Pittsfield, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at her home in Pittsfield.

She was born on Sept. 23, 1930, in the town of Burlington, one of 17 children, born to Willard Mclean and Ella (Southworth) Mclean.

She was married to Harold Scrivener on March 31, 1952, in Burlington.

She had been employed by the New Berlin Shoe Factory and Simmons Precision of Norwich.

She is survived by her husband, Harold, of Pittsfield; her children, Michele Sprague and her husband, Jeff of Summit Lake, Kevin Scrivener and his wife, Terri of Edmeston, Mitchell Scrivener and his wife, Karen of Plymouth; grandchildren include: Erik, Erin, Evan and Ashley Scrivener. She was one of 17 children and is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours and at Gladys' request; she is to be cremated at Hillington Crematory and no services held.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy be done by donations to the Alzheimer's Association, Northeastern New York Chapter, Leatherstocking Branch, P.O. Box 1364, Oneonta, NY 13820. Envelopes are available at the Johnston Funeral Home, 60 Broad St., Morris, NY.

Harold W. McEntee

WALTON — Harold William McEntee, 82, of Countryside Care Center, Delhi, formerly of Walton, died Sunday afternoon, Aug. 31, 2003, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on Aug. 20, 1921, in Monkton, County of Addison, Vt., the son of the late Fred Crandell and Stella Winifred (Shirey) McEntee. Harold was one of seven children.

He was previously married to Amy Fuller, who predeceased him. He later married Viola Card, who survives him, of Walton.

A retired S.J. Bailey employee, Harold had a love for life. Having survived four strokes, he was always seen riding his tractor around town to mow someone's lawn or to snow-blow their sidewalks. He enjoyed attending the Walton senior meal site.

Harold is survived by two sons, Vance of Hobart, and Donald of Walton; a daughter, Shirley Froehlich of Walton; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard of Tujunga, Calif.; a sister, Ruby Lamott of Fort Edward; a stepson, Mark Hinman of Victor; two stepdaughters, Florence Ross of Bainbridge, and Myrna Drumm of Sidney Center; 11 stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A son, David; a daughter, Margaret; a stepdaughter, Myrtle; two grandsons, Michael Froehlich and Robert Fuller; and also four of his brothers, Gerald, Shirey, Ralph and Robert, have predeceased him.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning, Sept. 3, 2003, from Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, with the Rev. Larry Light officiating. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today, when the family will be present at the funeral chapel. Burial will be at the Walton Cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Walton Senior Meal site in the name of Harold W. McEntee.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, Walton.
