Percy Pugh

WEST EDMESTON — Percy Pugh, 93 years old, of West Edmeston, died Sept. 1, 2003, at his home in West Edmeston.

He was born on May 1, 1910, in Steuben, son of Fred and Nellie (McArthur) Pugh.

He married Margaret Shillieto on Jan. 29, 1949. She survives.

He spent his childhood in Steuben. He was a 1928 graduate of Remsen Central School and attended Excelsior Business School in Utica in 1929.

He was a bookkeeper and an office manager for IT & CA Welch & Sons from 1929 until he served in the Armed Forces. After completing his service he returned to his job at Welch's Livestock Market, which he continued until his death.

He was secretary/treasurer for the West Edmeston Fire Department for many years. He was a member of the Edmeston Central School Board of Education, and the Presbyterian Church of Remsen.

He was director for the Upper Unadilla Valley Association, Past Master of the Farmers Lodge No. 0553, member of the Ziyara Temple and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He entered the US Army in 1942, where he was a Master Sergeant stationed in the Philippines and Japan. He was honorably discharged in October of 1945.

He is survived by his children, Mrs. Steven J. (Nancy) Purdy, Morris, Mrs. Timothy (MaryLynne) Gress, LaGrange, Ohio, Mrs. Paul (Diane) Mack, Richmond, Va., and Mrs. Rodney (Carol) Pratt, Tucson, Ariz.; his daughter-in-law, Debra Pugh, West Edmeston; nine grandchildren, Rebecca Pond, Stacy Pugh, Gavin Pugh, Heather Ann Purdy, Sarah Purdy, Erika Gress, Zach Gress and Casey and Molly Mack; three sisters-in-law, Doris Pugh, Burlie Pugh and Katherine Pugh; one brother-in-law, James Cummings; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by one son, Percy Frederick Pugh, and six brothers and four sisters.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at the Dakin Funeral Home, with Donald Buck, West Edmeston Community Church, West Edmeston, officiating. Interment will be in West Edmeston Cemetery, West Edmeston.

Memorial donations may be made to the West Edmeston Cemetery Association or the West Edmeston Fire Department.

Emile Tophoven

LEESBURG, Fla. — Emile Tophoven, 87, of Leesburg, formerly of Edmeston, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003.

He was born in Tegelen, Netherlands, to Johannes Emil and Maria Roemen Tophoven on Feb. 29, 1916.

He owned and operated Hoven Hof Farms for many years. He was a machinist (cutter grinder) for Savage Arms in Utica, employed with Scintilla in Sidney, and retired from Kelsey-Hayes in Utica.

He married Louise Henkes on Oct. 3, 1939, in West Winfield. She predeceased him on Jan. 20, 1988. He then married Charlotte Smith on Jan. 6, 1989.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Tophoven, Leesburg; son, Anthony Tophoven, and his wife, Ida Mae of West Edmeston. A son, Peter Tophoven, predeceased him Jan. 19, 2003; his wife, Linda, survives. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Timothy Tophoven and his wife, Belle, Tamara and Rebecca Tophoven, all of Edmeston, Wesley Tophoven and his wife, Kim of Westmoreland, John Tophoven, Marjorie Reynolds and her husband, Jamie, all of Hickory, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Thomas and Suellyn Tophoven of Edmeston, and Devon Tophoven of Westmoreland.

A committal service will take place at Union Cemetery in Edmeston at a later date.

Beyers Funeral Home in Leesburg is handling arrangements.

Helen L. Perry

ONEONTA — Helen L. Perry, 92, formerly of Oneonta, and most recently of Cooperstown, passed away Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at The Meadows.

She was born June 10, 1911, in Chinchilla, Pa., the daughter of Myron E. and Florence (Franklin) Leach.

She married Ralph E. Perry on Oct. 27, 1935, in Oneonta. He predeceased her on May 25, 1987.

Helen worked at W.T. Grants and J.C. Penney as a clerk.

She is survived by her son, David L. Perry, and his spouse, Sandra of Oneonta; her grandson, Ryan Perry of Oneonta; her granddaughter, Kaitlyn Perry of Oneonta; and a brother, Egbert Leach of Oneonta.

Two brothers, Ernest Leach and Richard Leach, predeceased her.

At Helen's request there will be no calling hours or funeral services.

Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Eleanor B. Palmer

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Eleanor B. Palmer, 80, of Truman Road, entered into eternal rest on Monday morning, Sept. 1, 2003, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born on Jan. 5, 1923, in the town of Russia, daughter of the late Leo and Myrtle Michael Coffin.

Eleanor was educated in the Poland Central School. A Richfield Springs resident for the past 45 years, she came here from Burlington Flats.

To her family she was the strength that held them together. She will be greatly missed.

Surviving are her companion, Howard H. Seamon of Richfield Springs; one son, Howard Lee Seamon of Sylvester, Ga.; a daughter, Bobby of Delta Lake; one brother, Sherwood T., and his wife, Ethel Coffin; a sister, Shirley, and her husband, Charles Seamon, all of Frankfort; two grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Five brothers and eight sisters predeceased her.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Alan Miller officiating.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday evening two hours prior to the funeral service, 6 until 8 p.m.

Mrs. Palmer will be laid to rest in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Poland, at a later time convenient to the family.

Elsie L. Moore

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Elsie L. Moore, 88, of Maplegrove Drive, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, in Berkshire Medical Center, Pittsfield.

She was born on April 19, 1915, in Mahanoy City, Pa., daughter of the late Frank and Concetta Tomaino Lupia.

A graduate of Oneonta Normal School, she substitute taught in Richfield Springs in 1934 and 1935. From 1935 to 1937, she taught full-time in the town of Warren.

On May 28, 1938, she married Lorence E. Moore in Richfield Springs, the Rev. Allen Brown officiated. Mr. Moore passed away on Sept. 18, 1998.

Elsie loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A friend to many, she will be truly missed.

Surviving are two sons, Lorence E. Moore II and his wife, Donna of Lenox, Mass., and Francis Moore and his companion, Carol Minor of Boulder Creek, Calif.; one daughter, Laurel Moore of Flushing, Queens; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Lorence, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis Lupia (killed in action in World War II) and Eugene Lupia, who passed away one month ago.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at 11 a.m. in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Dixon Bartle, Rector of Saint John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs, officiating.

Expressions of sympathy may be made with donations to the Craneville School Library, 95 Park Ave., Dalton, MA 01226 or Becket-Washington School Library, Maple Street, Becket, MA 01223.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

John R. Ratliff

HINTON, W.Va. — John R. Ratliff, 76, of Hinton, passed away Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at Charleston Area Medical Center, following a long illness.

His loving wife, Betty Lee Ratliff; a son, Richard Alan Ratliff; and two sisters, Virginia Hellems and Lucille Ratliff, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, John Ratliff Jr., of Hinton; a daughter, Nancy Lee Stover of Hinton; a sister, Billie Jo Honeywell of New Berlin; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two nephews and four nieces.

Services were held 2 p.m. Thursday at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton. Burial followed in Restwood Memorial Gardens.

Gerald Card

WEST ONEONTA — Mr. Gerald Card, a lifelong resident of West Oneonta, passed away on Aug. 31, 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Card; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Robert Bell of Milford; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Joyce; and a brother, Garieth.

There will be no calling hours.

A Mass for family and friends will be held at Holy Cross Church in Morris, on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at 11 a.m., with Fr. John Burns officiating. Burial will follow in the Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Card's memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Sidney Animal Shelter.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.

Thomas McNamee

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Thomas A. McNamee, 55, of 135 Park Ave., Gettysburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at his home.

He was born Feb. 14, 1948, in Willimantic, Conn., the son of the late Joseph E. and Mary T. (Walter) McNamee Sr.

He was a 1969 graduate of Iona College, New Rochelle, and received his master's degree from North Adams State College in North Adams.

He was a former Director of Development at Carleton College in Northfield and at Hartwick College in Oneonta, and later served as Associate Vice President for Development at Gettysburg College from 1994-2000.

He was involved with anti death penalty issues and a member of American Friends Society.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Lisa Schaad McNamee; three daughters, Jennifer S. McNamee-deBeer of Asheville, Caitilin E. McNamee of Albany, and Treasa F. McNamee of Gettysburg; and a brother, Dr. Joseph E. McNamee Jr. of Scarsdale.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg. The family will receive friends at the Monahan Funeral Home on Friday morning, from 10 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m.

Private interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Heifer Project International, P.O. Box 8058, Little Rock, AR 72203 or to Amnesty International, 322 8th Ave., New York, NY 10001.

Funeral services are by Monahan Funeral Home Inc., 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, PA 17325.

George H. Milligan

CANTRALL, Ill. — George H. Milligan, 59, of 7393 North Cantrall Creek Road, Cantrall, IL, 62625, formerly of Westford, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.

He was born May 10, 1944, on Long Island, the son of George and Mary Neilsen Milligan. His parents preceded him in death.

He married Sharon E. Sprague on June 20, 1965.

Mr. Milligan was one of the vice presidents of Egizii Electric.

Surviving are his wife, Sharon E.; two daughters, Lauren Milligan-Turner (husband, Floyd W. Turner Jr.) of Cantrall, and Jennifer Milligan-Garrand (husband, Adam Garrand) of Springfield; a son, Michael Milligan (wife, Kristin) of Petersburg; six grandchildren, Mikayla, Lindsay, Franky, Joshua, Cain and Fallyn.

Staab Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mildred E. Morgan

WORCESTER — Mildred E. Morgan, 92, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara, and husband, Charles Beverland of Worcester; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Morgan; a daughter, Mary Morgan Fisher; two sisters and four brothers.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Mildred to the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, NY 12197.

Arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, Worcester.
