Margaret Andrews

FLY CREEK — Mrs. Margaret Andrews, 73, of Fly Creek, died Saturday evening, Sept. 13, 2003, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Born on Aug. 2, 1930, in Yonkers, Marge was a graduate of the Yonkers School of Commerce.

She married Arthur Clayton Andrews on Feb. 13, 1949, in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of St. Michael in Yonkers.

After moving to the Cooperstown area, Marge was first employed as an aide at the former Otsego County Infirmary. She later became employed at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital as an emergency room technician, but left there to devote all of her time to raising her family.

Over the years, she was employed as a clerk at the former A&P and Victory supermarkets in Cooperstown. Ultimately she returned to the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, where she served as a print shop technician and later became an emergency department receptionist, retiring from this position in 1991.

Active with local Cub Scouting activities, she served for 17 years as a den mother and also trained many den mothers in the area. In honor of her dedication, she was awarded the highest award given in Cub Scouting, the Silver Fawn.

Throughout her years in Fly Creek, Marge volunteered at the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, where she helped with rummage sales, and was a member of the Fly Creek Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and produced many afghans. In her retirement years, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Marge is survived by her husband of 54 years, Art, of Fly Creek; two sons, James Andrews and his wife, Nicki, of Afton, and Bruce Andrews and his wife, Sue, of Schuyler Lake; two grandchildren, Clayton James Andrews and Maria Carmella Andrews; one sister, Teresa, of California; and several cousins.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, in the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas S. Burleigh, pastoral care coordinator for Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, officiating. The service of committal and burial will follow in the Andrews plot in Adams Cemetery on county Highway 26 in Fly Creek.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, when Marge's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326, or to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fly Creek Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 41, Fly Creek, NY 13337, or to the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 128, Fly Creek, NY 13337.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

James Greenough

COOPERSTOWN — A committal service and burial with full military honors for James J. Greenough, who died Aug. 28, 2003, will be held at Lakewood Cemetery at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Harriet Ramo

HOBART — Harriet Ramo died peacefully in her sleep on Sept. 9, 2003. She was 95 years old.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Toni and Joe Weaver; two grandsons, Matthew and David Weaver; one great-granddaughter, Katie Rose; and her sister, Amelia McGregor, and her husband, Ronald, residing in Florida.

Her husband of 62 years, Anthony, predeceased her.

"Harri," as she was known to her friends, retired with her husband to Florida in 1972. She enjoyed water-color painting and spending summers in Delhi with her family.

A service to celebrate Harri's life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at 3 p.m. at the Hearthstone in Hobart, where she resided for the last three years.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy should be sent to The Hearthstone, 20 Cornell Ave., Hobart NY 13788.

Arrangements were through MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi.

John D. Potter

CORTLAND — John D. Potter, 64, of 2256 E. River Road, Cortland, passed away Sept. 14, 2003, at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse.

Mr. Potter was born April 28, 1939, in Cortland, a son of the late Durewood and Frances (Perry) Potter.

Mr. Potter was a graduate of Homer High School and SUNY Morrisville.

For several years he worked construction while residing in East Guilford. Returning to the area, he went to work for Brockway Motor Trucks until the closing of the Cortland Facility in 1977. He then established John D. Potter Trucking, operating until his recent retirement.

He had been an active member of the Historical Truck Society with a special interest in Brockway and Peterbuilt Trucks. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and throughout his life he had been an active community member.

Mr. Potter is survived by his wife of 34 years, Mary Schmidt Potter; one son, John D. (Carlene) Jr. of Cortland; his daughter, Kimberly (James) Ireland of Burnt Hills; one brother, Dean (Kaye) Potter of Scott; two sisters, Gwendolyn (Edward) Stiles of Cortland and Constance MacPherson of Homer; a granddaughter, Ellie Potter of Cortland; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Homer United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Atwater Cemetery in Homer.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday evening, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the East Homer United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

Raymond K. Price

ROSEBOOM — Raymond K. Price of Roseboom died Sept. 12, 2003, at 95, after a long illness.

A retired partner of the New York Stock Exchange member firm Adams & Peck, he was a native Long Islander who became a summer resident of Roseboom in 1955, and then, after retirement, a full-time Roseboom resident.

His wife of 61 years, the former Beth Porter, died in 1990. He later formed a loving relationship with Elizabeth Bowen of Roseboom, a widow, which continued until her death earlier this year.

He is survived by a son, Raymond K. Price Jr. of New York City, who was Editorial Page Editor of the New York Herald Tribune and then the principal writer for President Nixon; a daughter, Beth Brown of Roseboom; three grandsons, Eric Brown of Fort St. John, Fla., Mark Brown of Roseboom and George Brown of Toledo, Ohio; and by five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Oct. 11, 2003, at the Assembly of God Church in Cherry Valley.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Ralph S. Petley

BAINBRIDGE — Ralph Sackett Petley, 92, of Bainbridge, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at The Hospital in Sidney.

He was born March 8, 1911, son of the late John H. and Viola Sackett Petley in Unadilla.

Ralph graduated from Sidney High School in 1930. He married Lydia Spiegelberg on June 25, 1932, in West Endicott.

Mr. Petley owned and operated a dairy farm in Rockdale, until he retired in 1970 and moved to Bainbridge.

He was a former member of the Mount Upton School Board of Education and a 45-year member of the Chenango County Agriculture Cooperative Extension as well as a 60-year member of the Borden Hose Company Mount Upton Fire Department.

Mr. Petley is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lydia Petley, Bainbridge; four sons and daughters-in-law, David and Irma Petley, Preston, Robert and Beverly Petley, DeRuyter, Richard and Donna Petley, Dolgeville, and John and Carole Petley, Chenango Forks; daughter, Harlene Palmer, Sidney; niece, Marie Smith; nephew, Stephen Nielson; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothea Tuckey; and his brother, Charles H. Petley.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m. Michael Kauffman, friend and neighbor, will officiate. Friends may call Thursday morning prior to the service. The family will be in attendance at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.

Memorial contributions may be made in Ralph's name to the Greenlawn Cemetery Association in Bainbridge.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Esther B. Young

BAINBRIDGE — Esther B. Young, 74, of 23 Greenlawn Ave., Bainbridge, passed away Sunday evening, Sept. 14, 2003, at The Saratoga Hospital, Saratoga Springs.

She was born March 31, 1929, in Deposit, the daughter of the late Harold Manny and Nellie Spencer Buchanan.

On May 30, 1947, she married Thornton Young in Deposit. Esther was employed by the Amphenol Corporation, Sidney, for over 24 years. She retired in 1986.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Bainbridge, and for several years was a member of the Bainbridge Fire Department.

Mrs. Young was a Republican Committee person from Bainbridge, and was a regional assistant to Senator Thomas W. Libous of Binghamton.

Esther was a loving wife and a devoted grandmother. She was devoted to her grandchildren, Brent and Lisa Knapp, who were the light of her life.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Thornton Young, of Bainbridge; son and daughter-in-law, Denis and Linda Young of Benson, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Darla and Thomas Colvard of Bainbridge; six grandchildren, Stephen, Kevin, Mark and Monica Young and Brent and Lisa Knapp; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A sister, Bertha Phelps, predeceased her on Sept. 12, 2003.

Friends may call Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, from 5 to 8 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Tony Hipes, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Bainbridge and Afton, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.

Memorial contributions may be made in Esther's name to the United Methodist Church of Bainbridge.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Leroy A. Furman

WALTON — Leroy A. Furman, 81, of Walton passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

He was born Oct. 21, 1921, in Warwarsing, the son of Arthur and Katie (Countryman) Furman.

He married Fern Dunshee on Dec. 4, 1941, in Walton.

Leroy served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a heavy machine gunner. Leroy was awarded the following: European African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with one Battle Star, Combat Infantry Badge, World War II Victory Ribbon, American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal. He received a Purple Heart for being badly wounded in combat.

When he recovered from his war wound, he returned to Walton, where he worked for Queens Farms driving trucks for many years. Afterwards, he started farming just outside of Walton. He also worked as a mechanic.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 32, the VFW in Walton, and the Teamster's Union.

He enjoyed driving stock cars at the track in Morris. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

He is survived by his wife, Fern Furman, of Walton; his children and their spouses, Betty and Wayne Brown of Oregon, Evelyn and Franklin Fish of Hancock, June and John Phoenix of Walton, and Douglas and Joanne Furman of Walton; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Arthur Furman of Walton and James and his wife, Zelphia, of Sidney Center; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service to celebrate the life of Leroy A. Furman will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at the Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, 102 Delaware St., Walton, with the Rev. Peggy Fabrizio, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Walton, officiating. Burial will follow in the Walton Cemetery, where he will be accorded military honors.

Friends may call on Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. at the Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorial contributions be made to the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford, NY 13830.

Arrangements are by the Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, Walton.

Virginia Barnhart

WALTON — Virginia Nelle Barnhart passed into eternal life to be with her Savior and Lord, Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.

She was born to Samuel and Margaret York Conklin on May 15, 1918, in Roscoe. She was a resident of Walton and Masonville.

Mrs. Barnhart was a housewife and homemaker and a home- health aide.

Virginia enjoyed gardening, canning, reading, crocheting and crossword puzzles. She loved and greatly enjoyed her family; her grandchildren meant the world to her. She was a great mom and grandma. Mrs. Barnhart was also a member of the Sidney Women of the Moose No. 502.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Clifford Foster, Masonville; two granddaughters, Rose Marie Crampton, Oxford, and Theresa and Raymond Killion, Howell, N.J.; four grandsons, Lester and Carol Howard, Walton, Jerry Howard and companion, Sherri, Newark Valley, William Scott Barnhart Jr. and companion, Jodi, Hancock, and Frank and Christina Foster, Hamden; special ex-granddaughter, Maria Howard, Owego; special ex-daughter-in-law, Angie Barnhart, Howell, N.J.; two stepgrandsons, Clifton John and Joyce Foster, Unadilla, and Clayton and Carmen Foster, Tracy, Calif.; 12 great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Barnhart; her son, William Scott Barnhart Sr.; two great-grandsons, Joshua Howard and Christopher Swan; her parents; and two sisters, Isabel Delameter and Vivian Connally.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Hamden Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
