Nellie C. Schermerhorn

STAMFORD — Nellie Catherine Schermerhorn, 72, of Porn Road, Stamford, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born May 20, 1931, in the town of Bovina. She married Fred A. Schermerhorn on Aug. 13, 1977, in Hobart.

She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness of Stamford.

She is survived by her husband, Fred A. Schermerhorn; children, Mary Lee, Linda Andrus, Connie Fancher, Faye Schermerhorn and Doug Mattice; stepchildren, Beverly Sparks, Jeannine Temple and Alice Schermerhorn and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Mattice.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness in Stamford.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Carlton B. Kellogg

TREADWELL — Carlton B. Kellogg, 92, of Treadwell died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at his home.

He was born July 30, 1911, in Treadwell, the son of Charles F. and Ethel (Wheat) Kellogg.

He married L. Arlowene Kellogg on Oct. 28, 1939, at the Gilchrist Memorial Presbyterian Church in Kortright. Mrs. Kellogg predeceased him in 1992.

A lifelong area resident, Carlton attended the Delaware Literary Institute in Franklin. He graduated from the A.L. Kellogg Central School in Treadwell and also the Newark Diesel Institute.

Carlton was a man of many trades. He was a mechanic, a machinist, a heavy equipment operator and a farmer. Prior to farming, he worked as an equipment operator for the Delaware County Highway Department. From 1939 until 1976, Carlton and his family owned and operated a large dairy farm on Roaring Brook Road in Treadwell. He and Arlowene then moved to the house in the village and farmed with his son, Clyde, for many years.

Carlton was an early organizer of the Franklin, Treadwell Fire Protection District in the 1940s, where he served as fire commissioner for 10 years. He was named a lifetime member of the Treadwell Fire Department for more than 60 years of service. He served as the fire chief for 10 years and was instrumental in founding the Treadwell Emergency Squad in which he was an EMT for many years.

He was also an honored member of the Fireman's Association of the New York State and Central New York Fireman's Association for more than 60 years of service.

He was a life member of the Treadwell Methodist Church. A longtime member and supporter of the NRA. A board member of the Rockdale Milk Producer's Co-op, as well as a member and delegate of the New York State Artificial Breeder's Co-op.

Carlton was a history buff. He was well-versed in local, New York State and American history, economics, politics and general information. In his retirement, he would read seven to 10 western novels in a week.

Carlton's presence in the community will be deeply missed by all.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and George Roy II of Beaver Dams, and Eleanor and Gerry Reynolds of Avon Lake, Ohio; two sons and daughter-in-law, Clyde A. Kellogg of Treadwell, and Bruce L. and Lori Kellogg of Bainbridge; 10 grandchildren, George A. Roy III, Susan Gloss, Sally Siconolfi, Eric T. Reynolds, Mark D. Reynolds, Krista van Veen, Lisa Roark, Tracey Kellogg, David Kellogg and Katie Kellogg; four great-grandchildren, Thorin Reynolds, Kiernan Reynolds, Alexander Roy and Elizabeth Gloss; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins; many friends and neighbors, especially Robert and Gert Miner and Don and Elsie Zurn Ritz.

Carlton was predeceased by his wife, Arlowene Georgia Kellogg; his son, Harry Carlton Kellogg; two brothers, Norman and Gerald Kellogg; two sisters, Eleanor Kellogg Palmer and Marjorie Kellogg Lyon; and his parents, Ethel and Charles Kellogg.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Elliott Oakes and the Rev. Lyle Linder officiating. Burial will follow in the Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.

Carlton's family will be present at the funeral home on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish to call.

It has be requested, that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Treadwell Methodist Church, care of The Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 176, Treadwell, NY 13846, the Treadwell Emergency Squad, Treadwell, NY 13846 or to the Treadwell Fire Department, Treadwell, NY 13846 in loving memory of Carlton B. Kellogg.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Nicholas Steckler

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Nicholas "Nick" Steckler, 80, of River Street entered into eternal rest on Friday morning, Sept. 26, 2003, in Little Falls Hospital.

He was born on Oct. 28, 1922, in the town of Warren, son of the late Victor and Mary Papach Steckler.

A lifelong Richfield Springs resident he was a graduate of VanHornesville High School.

During World War II he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps., serving for 31/2 years. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant in November of 1946.

On April 18, 1970, he married Katherine M. McCarty in Jordanville.

Nick was a heavy equipment operator; he first worked for the town of Warren Highway Department. In the same capacity he later went to work for the New York State Thruway Authority, retiring after 20 years of service in 1984.

He was a member of Hugick, Purcell and Shepardson American Legion Post No. 616 in Richfield Springs.

He had a strong love for the outdoors and nature. In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and playing golf. Nick was happiest when his many friends and family surrounded him.

He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

Surviving are his loving wife of 33 years, Katherine; a son, Nicholas J. Steckler of Phoenix, Ariz.; three daughters, Nadine Steckler and her significant other, Peter Nowicki, of Cooperstown, Michele and her husband, Randy Reyman, of Phoenix, and Maria (Steckler) Hovick of Burlington Green; one brother, William and his wife, Barbara, Steckler of Richfield Springs; four grandchildren, Trasi and her husband, Brian, Hricay of Oneonta, Erika and Miranda Reyman of Phoenix, and Nicholas Hovick of Burlington Green; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, two brothers, Steven and Harry Steckler; and five sisters, Anne Hanrahan, Olga Androski, Annette Patnaude, Nancy Wolkoff and Helene Steckler preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Liu, the staff at the Herkimer Prime Care Facility and the Intensive Care Unit of Little Falls Hospital for the care and compassion shown to Nick during his illness.

Arletta M. Kortz

COOPERSTOWN — Ms. Arletta M. Kortz of Cooperstown, passed away Saturday evening, Sept. 27, 2003, at her home.

She was born in Easton, Pa., on Aug. 28, 1924, a daughter of Henry and Wealthy (Warne) Kortz.

Arletta was a graduate of Easton High School in Easton. Shortly after graduation Arletta enlisted in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) where she served stateside and in the southwest Pacific. She was discharged in August 1946, after which she was employed by New York Telephone on Long Island for 35 years, retiring in 1981. She then moved to Cooperstown in 1982.

Arletta enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing, and most lately her computer. She always loved animals and always had dogs and cats. Her collie, Carrie, and her kitten, Frankie, will sorely miss her.

She was a member of the Walter P. Eggleston Post No. 7128 VFW of Cooperstown and the American Legion on Long Island, having served as post commander in Hempstead in 1970.

Arletta is survived by her friend and companion of many years, Helen F. Chetner of Cooperstown; cousins, John and Linda Kortz and son, Ryan, of Nazareth, Pa., and Anna and Dorothy Kortz of Nazareth. Also, special friends, Vytautas Gudelis of Springfield, and Joseph D. Booan Jr. of Cooperstown. Other close and dear friends, Ellen LaSalle of Cherry Valley, Barbara Miller of Hartwick, and Dorothy Fritts of Toddsville.

She was predeceased by her parents; and her sister, Wealthy J. Kortz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. George St. John, temporary administrator, officiating.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to the Susquehanna S.P.C.A.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Eleanor Finnigan

GILBERTSVILLE — Eleanor Henrich Finnigan, 70, of Gilbertsville, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at her home in Gilbertsville.

She was born on Nov. 28, 1932, in Chicago, Ill., daughter of the late Karl and Augusta (Feld) Henrich.

She married John Finnigan in New York City, on Sept. 13, 1958. Mrs. Finnigan came to Gilbertsville in 1959 with her husband.

She was employed for many years at the former Gilbertsville Central School. She was a member of the Holy Cross Church of Morris, and a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel of Osprey, Fla.

She is survived by her husband, John Finnigan, of Gilbertsville; a son, John M. Finnigan and his wife, Jomary, and their children, Joseph, Patrick and Sara of Maitland, Fla., a daughter, Monica Finnigan Buchholz and her husband, Ted, and their children, Ana, Ben, Max, Louise, Karl and Teddy Buchholz of Charlottesville, Va. and a son, Thomas B. Finnigan of Gilbertsville. She is also survived by her brother, Tom Henrich and his wife, Paula, and their children, Kristin, Paul and Michelle of Cincinnati, Ohio.

There will be no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Holy Cross Church in Morris, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, with the Rev. John Burns officiating. Committal services and burial will follow at the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

Friends are invited back to the Finnigan home after the burial service for refreshments.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the Holy Cross Church, Morris, NY 13808, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Osprey, FL 34229 or the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad, Gilbertsville, NY 13776.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Harrison A. Geiselmann

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. — Harrison A. Geiselmann passed away Sept. 3, 2003, at Kindred Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla.

He was born in New York City, on Jan. 11, 1920, a son of John A. and Grace (Walley) Geiselmann, and twin brother of John E. Geiselmann.

He married Audrey Rowell on July 15, 1945, in Franklin.

Harrison grew up in the Franklin area. He was a member of the 104th Infantry Division during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in Germany.

He received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Hartwick College, where he played varsity basketball and baseball with his twin brother, John. He then taught mathematics at Unadilla Central School for five years. He received a master's degree from Syracuse University and a Ph.D. from Cornell University. Harrison served as a professor of mathematics and mathematics education at Cornell for 30 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a former editor of the New York State Mathematics Teacher's Journal and former president of the Association of Mathematics Teachers. In 1985, he was awarded the prestigious New York State Chancellor's Medal for excellence in teaching at the college level.

Harrison is survived by his wife of 58 years, Audrey, of Englewood, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and James Hamill of Reinholds, Pa.; a granddaughter, Karen Hamill of Reinholds; two sisters-in-law, Barbara (Frank) Oles of Andes, and Marilyn (John) Monaco of Schenectady and Gainesville, Fla.; a brother-in-law, James (Anita) Rowell of Kingston; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his twin, John, in 1998.

A memorial service was held on Sept. 15, 2003, in Englewood.

Helen Goodspeed

EDMESTON — Helen C. Goodspeed, 93, of Edmeston, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at The Meadows in Middlefield.

She was born Feb. 10, 1910, in Brookfield, the daughter of Abraham and Emma Jeanette (Williams) Crandall.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Walter C. Lamb on Oct. 11, 1953, and Harley Glen Goodspeed on April 4, 1989.

Helen had been employed by the Otsego School in Edmeston as a kitchen aide.

She was a member of the Second Baptist Church, the Wharton Valley Grange, and the Pomona Grange.

Helen had a tremendous love for flowers, plants and birds. In her later years she enjoyed compiling her family history.

Helen is survived by her son, DeWitt Lamb; her step-children, Beverly Nightingale and Bruce Goodspeed; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephew.

Helen was also predeceased by her siblings, Cleon Crandall, Stephen Crandall, Louis Crandall, Ralph Crandall and Fannie Larrabee.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Jay Noll officiating. Interment will follow the funeral service at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Sept. 29, 2003, at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made in Helen's memory to either the Arthritis Foundation or the Edmeston Emergency Squad.
