Francis Mahoney

WALTON — Francis A. "Frank" Mahoney, 87, of 8 Camp Ave., Walton, passed away Monday evening, Oct. 6, 2003, in the Countryside Care Center, Delhi, after a long illness.

Frank was born in Scranton, Pa., the son of William and Lillian Sullivan Mahoney on May 17, 1916.

He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Scranton.

On Aug. 21, 1943, Frank married the former Julia R. Regan at St. Ambrose Church, Endicott.

Frank was a meatcutter, employed for 25 years at the A&P of Walton and later of Margaretville. He then worked at the Super Duper which later became the Walton Big M for over 19 years.

Frank was a loving husband and father who always did his best to help people and was always there when you needed him.

He is survived by his wife, Julia R. Mahoney; one daughter, Sheila R. Mahoney of Spring, Texas; one sister, Marion Mahoney of Morrisville, Pa.; and a nephew, Robert Mahoney of Gaithersburg, Md.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen E. Wilbur, in February 1994, and two brothers, Willard and John Mahoney.

The family will receive friends Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at St. John the Baptist Church, Walton, with the Rev. Michael Flannery officiating. Interment will be in Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Frank's memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, Walton EMS or the Walton Fire Department. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Daniel J. Wier

WALTON — Daniel J. Wier, a longtime Walton area resident, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, in Walton. He was 57.

He was born Jan. 11, 1946, in Grayling, Mich., to Casmier Wiewiorski and Edith Elsey Wier. He came to the Walton area in 1952.

Dan was married to Susan Spafard Wier, who survives at home.

He was owner and operator of Wier Trucking in Walton.

Dan was the "genuine article." He was a great husband, father and brother, and a very hard worker.

He was a gifted mechanic and respected man in his community and will be remembered for helping many people with their mechanical problems. He was willing to help anyone with anything.

Daniel J. Wier is survived by his wife, Susan, at home in Walton; a son, Edward Bailey, Walton; daughter, Jenna Bond, Pinckneyville, Ill.; brother, Edward Wier, Norwich; sisters, Rosemary Wier, Oneonta, and Ilah Dowker and Betty Brown, Johannasburg, Mich.; grandchildren, Courtney Hardy and Edward Daniel Bailey, Harpursville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware Streets, Walton, where the family will receive friends Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, from 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at the funeral home with Pastor Delbert Ripley of the Northfield Community Church officiating. Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Contributions to Walton Emergency Squad or Trout Creek Emergency Squad in the name of Daniel J. Wier would be appreciated.

Olaus Olsen

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Olaus Olsen, 89, of Lawrenceville, formerly of Oneonta and West Laurens, died Oct. 6, 2003.

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at the Bill Head Funeral Home Duluth Chapel, with the Rev. Shohn Tanner officiating.

Mr. Olsen, a native of Norway, was a United States Navy veteran and oil barge Captain with the Merchant Marines.

He was a deacon and charter member of Oneonta Assembly of God.

He is survived by his wife, Gerd Olsen, Lawrenceville; sons, Arne Olsen, Dacula, Ga., Erik Olsen, Lawrenceville, and Tor Olsen, Manchester, Conn.; granddaughter, Kristine Olsen, Schenectady; great-granddaughter, Caitlen Olsen, Schenectady; brother, Arnold Olsen, West Hurley; sisters, Astrid Bille, Norway, and Arlis Mickaelsen, Norway.

The family will receive friends Thursday at 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bill Head Funeral Home Duluth Chapel; 770-476-2535.

Laura Short

ONEONTA — Laura Short, 75, of Oneonta passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.

She was born April 4, 1928, in Oneonta, the daughter of Clarence and Helen (Baldwin) Austin.

She was first married to Harry Hitchcock. He predeceased her. She was later married to Clifford Short. He also predeceased her.

She was employed as a private duty home health aide in the Oneonta area.

She was a lifelong area resident who had a strong belief in God.

Laura enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing, cooking and she played several musical instruments. She was a member of the Sweet Adelines.

She is survived by two daughters and a son, Kathy Morell of Maryland, Christine and John Kelly of Schuyler Lake, and Wayne and Sue Hitchcock of Oneonta. She was the beloved grandmother of Michelle and Jody Sperbeck of Schenevus, Renay Morell and Ethan Kehoe of Maryland, Cherri and Eric Haner of Maryland, Don and Anoel Kelly of Schuyler Lake, Faith Kelly of Cooperstown, and Rebecca, Jacob and Jason Hitchcock of Oneonta. She was the beloved great-grandmother of Shawn and Brittney Sperbeck, Brady Haner, Amber and Benjamin Kelly and Makenzie Kehoe.

She was predeceased by a son, Cameron Hitchcock.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Henry C. Murdock

HARTWICK — Henry Charles Murdock, 89, a lifelong resident of Hartwick, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 8, 2003, at The Meadows.

Henry was born on May 25, 1914, in Hartwick, a son of Howard Perry and Grace (Houghtaling) Murdock.

He married Eva Mac Colburn on July 10, 1937, in Oneonta.

Raised in Hartwick, Henry attended school up until the eighth grade, at which point he left to help on the family farm. In the late 1950s, he became employed by the Town of Hartwick Highway Department and was with them for 10 years as a heavy machinery operator. He was also employed as a driver of milk tankers for the Fly Creek Valley Co-op, retiring from this position in his early '60s.

Throughout their life together, Henry and Eva traveled in their van through every state, including Alaska, as well as most of Canada.

A dedicated Hartwick resident, Henry was a member of the Hartwick Volunteer Fire Department and at one time served as Chief. A member of the Hartwick Baptist Church, he was also a member of the Hartwick Historical Society, was a 4-H leader for 25 years, and was a member for 67 years of the Otego Valley Grange. In addition to these activities, he served for many years as the caretaker for the Hartwick Cemetery.

An avid outdoorsman, Henry was a member of the National Rifle Association, the North American Hunters Club, and was a founding member of the Hartwick Rod & Gun Club. He was well-known for his deer hunting in the area woodlands as well as his fishing in Otsego Lake and area streams.

Henry is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eva, of Hartwick; one daughter, Nadine Randall and her husband, Leon, of Brooksville, Fla., and their children, Gerald Randall, Therese Silicato and her husband, Mark, Jeffrey Randall and his wife, Jennifer, Denise Franolich, and Laureen Joy; two sons, Robert Murdock and his wife, Eileen, of Hartwick, and their children, Daniel Murdock and his wife, Michelle, Robert H. Murdock II, Jennifer Murdock, and Benjamin Murdock; and William H. Murdock of Toddsville, and his children, William H. ("Todd") Murdock II and his wife, Melinda, Scott A. Murdock and his wife, Mary Beth, and Brent J. Murdock; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Adell Gow of Sidney; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one daughter-in-law, Mary Rose Murdock, who died April 28, 2003; and one brother-in-law, Windsor Gow.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, in the Hartwick Christian Church, with the Rev. Laverne Saxer, pastor, officiating.

Burial in the Hartwick Cemetery will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Immediately following the funeral service in the church, the family invites all those attending to join with them for a time of fellowship, remembering and refreshment in the Hartwick Fire Hall, which is located across the street from the Christian Church.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., when Henry's family will be in attendance.

In lieu or flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Hartwick Fire Department, P.O. Box 86, Hartwick, NY 13348, the Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, the Activities Fund at The Meadows, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to a charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Philip W. Domion

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Philip William Domion Jr., 67, of Henry Conklin Road, unexpectedly entered into eternal rest on Tuesday morning, Oct. 7, 2003, at his home.

He was born on July 18, 1936, in Cooperstown, son of the late Philip W. and Katherine Kallan Domion. His mother, Katherine, passed away at a young age, and he was raised by his father and stepmother, Janice Gaylord Domion.

A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, he was educated in Richfield Springs schools.

On March 3, 1976, he married the former Bonnie Shippengrover in Richfield Springs.

Mr. Domion was the owner and operator of the Domion Dairy Farm in the town of Richfield. For 35 years he was a bus driver for the Richfield Springs Central School system. He was currently serving as councilman on the Richfield Town Board and was a former President of the Schuyler Lake Snowmobile Club.

He had a strong love for the outdoors and nature, where he loved to hunt.

He will be greatly missed by many, especially his family.

Surviving besides his loving wife of 27 years, Bonnie; are three sons, Michael and his wife, Connie Domion of Richfield Springs, Kenneth Domion of Utah, and Edward and his wife, Tammy of Richfield Springs; two daughters and their husbands, Kristine and Larry Mondore of Richfield Springs, and Dawn and Jeff Eldred of Rome; his stepmother, Janice Domion of Easton, Pa.; a brother, James Domion and his wife, Kristin of Richfield Springs; four sisters and their husbands, Connie and Raymond Nassar of Richfield Springs, Joan and Michael Lahr of Grapevine, Texas, Jennifer and James Eggleston of Easton, and Barbara and Fred Huyck of Susquehanna, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs on Thursday, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Jennifer M. Zavatsky

GUILFORD — Jennifer Marie Zavatsky, 29, of Guilford, passed away unexpectedly.

She was born March 9, 1974, the daughter of John M. and Janice Brown Zavatsky in Somerville, N.J.

Jennifer had recently moved to the area and was employed as a teller for the Sidney Federal Credit Union in the Harpursville branch office.

She was a great collector of NASCAR memorabilia and a big fan of the rock group Kiss.

Jennifer loved to read, watch movies and spend time with her dogs, Spike and Duke.

She was very loving, caring and energetic.

She is survived by her parents, John and Janice Zavatsky, Guilford; her maternal grandmother, Joan Sharyk, East Stroudsburg, Pa.; a sister and brother-in-law, Melissa and Kevin Gray, Raleigh, N.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Jamie and Jennifer Zavatsky, Binghamton, brother, Mark Zavatsky, Kirkwood; nieces and nephews, Samantha, Stephanie, Amber, Corey, Austin, Devin and Dustin; maternal aunt and uncle, Karen and Bob Bentzinger, N.J.; three maternal uncles and aunts, Robert Brown, Scott and Linda Brown, and Jeff and Debbie Brown; three paternal uncles and aunts, Joseph and Grace Zavatsky, New Jersey, Gene and Elaine Zavatsky, Florida, and Tom and Manny Zavatsky, Pennsylvania; and several cousins.

She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Robert Brown; her paternal grandparents, Joseph and Mary Zavatsky; and her nephew, Nicolas.

Friends may call Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with a memorial service to follow at 1 p.m.
