Frederick J. Hutchinson

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Frederick J. Hutchinson, 46, of South New Berlin, passed away on Oct. 11, 2003, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. His passing was a peaceful one at home surrounded by the love and care of his family.

Born on March 17, 1957, in Cambridge, Mass., Fred was the son of Rita (Stanton) and Fred J. Hutchinson. He grew up in the Somerville/Medford area of Boston, Mass., and graduated from Somerville Technical High School.

After high school, Fred was proud to serve in the United States Navy from 1976-1980, aboard the USS White Plains. He was an Interior Communications Electrician Second Class, and held total responsibility for the operation of the ship's dial telephone systems.

Fred worked in Massachusetts for a number of years, including as a Senior Electronic Technician at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory and as a Glazier with the Hamilton Glass Company. After moving to New York State in 1991, Fred began a career in the Telecommunications industry.

He worked for various companies as an Installer and Tester, and then secured a position with Nortel Networks, as a Supervisor of Installation. He was promoted to Operations Manager, and was able to work out of a home office, affording him more time to spend with his family. Fred enjoyed his work, and was awarded Nortel's coveted Top Gun Award from the corporate Global Carrier Solutions in Field Operations. With the economic downturn of 2001, came massive layoffs, and Fred was laid off along with approximately 60,000 other Nortel employees.

In February 2003, Fred secured a position at OSG Pharmaceuticals in Norwich, as he wanted to take a position in which he would not have to travel so he could be home with his family.

On Nov. 4, 1989, Fred married Cindy Magacs in Cohasset, Mass. They moved to South New Berlin in 1991 to raise a family. They have four children, Sarah, Freddie, Emily and Jackie, as well as a black lab named Katey, who followed Fred everywhere.

Surviving are his wife, Cindy; and their children, Sarah, Freddie, Emily and Jackie, who loved Daddy with all their hearts. Also surviving are Fred's brothers, Tom Hutchinson of Tewksbury, Mass., and Paul Hutchinson of Topsfield, Mass., along with their families. They have been a source of love and comfort to Fred's family throughout Fred's illness. Fred also has a sister, Rita Donnelly, of Medford, Mass.

Fred loved his family. When he worked away from home, he would always make it home every weekend, no matter where the job had taken him. He spent untold hours teaching his children various skills for life.

Fred was an excellent cook, and would let each of his kids help prepare a special dish at Thanksgiving. Fred and Cindy made every Field Trip, Thanksgiving Feast and other school and extracurricular activity that they could for their children, and Fred could often be seen running around taking photos of each event, and later presenting a photo banner to the teacher.

Fred was honored to be the Vice President of the UV Youth Baseball in 2002-2003, and the unofficial Team Photographer and "Water Boy" for the Junior All-Star Team in the summer of 2002.

Fred spent hours upon hours helping in the Big Move to the new UV Central School, as he wanted to make sure that the kids would be able to get down to the business of learning as soon as possible.

Fred will always be remembered as a loving, devoted husband and a best friend by his wife and as the best Dad in the whole world by his children and Katey Dog.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, South New Berlin, with Pastor Kurt Funke.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.
