Arthur A. Bathen

WALTON — Arthur A. Bathen, 52, of Walton, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at his home, following an extended illness.

He was born on Sept. 18, 1951, in Delhi, the son of Siegfried and Mary (Boggs) Bathen.

A lifetime resident of Delaware County, Arthur was employed as an auto body repairman at Mid-County Autobody for 27 years.

Survivors include his partner, Cynthia Burroughs; and four children, Jason Bathen, 29, of Hamden, Zackery Bathen, 14, Alysa Bathen, 9, and Jessica Bathen, 6, all of Walton; his mother, Mary Bathen; a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Bathen; and a nephew, Jamie Bathen, all of Delhi; a sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Goebeler of Unadilla; Cynthia's parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Porter of Walton; and aunts, uncles and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Siegfried Bathen, on Jan. 27, 1998.

Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Miriam Hathaway officiating.

Friends and family are invited to call at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will take place in Bovina Cemetery, Bovina Center.

Contributions in Arthur's memory can be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

James R. Durkee

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — James Russell Durkee, 70, of Fredericksburg, Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital.

He worked for the Free Lance-Star in the Distributing Department. Mr. Durkee also worked for the Highway Department in Otsego County, and served 22 years in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of the American Legion in Cooperstown, was involved with the Drum & Bugle Corps in Schenevus, collected fire memorabilia and loved sports.

Surviving are his wife, Meryle L. Durkee; two daughters, Kim Zuk and her husband, Andrew, of Oneonta, and Donna McLeod of Ohio; a son, James Russell Durkee Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Scranton, Pa.; two sisters, Edna Louise Fulliam of Colorado and Mary Jane Foster of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; a brother, Robert M. Durkee of New Mexico; and four grandchildren, Laura Doenges and her husband, Sean, A.J. Zuk, Kellie Durkee and James Russell Durkee III.

Mr. Durkee was preceded in death by his parents, Beatrice and John Gordon Durkee; and a brother, John Durkee.

A funeral will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Interment will be in Quantico National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fly Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Fly Creek, NY 13337.

John E. Gallucci

ONEONTA — John E. Gallucci (Junior), beloved husband, father and grandfather, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003.

He was born on July 23, 1936, in Oneonta, the son of John and Raffaella Gallucci.

He married Jacqueline LaSalle of Long Island on June 27, 1964.

A lifelong area resident of Oneonta, John attended St. Mary's School and Oneonta Junior and Senior High School.

He served in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1958.

He attended school in New York City, and Broome Tech for toolmaking. He was employed by Bendix (later Amphenol) for 34 years, retiring in 1991 as a supervisor.

John was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and camping.

As an adult, he was an active leader in the Boy Scouts and a coach at the Oneonta Boy's Club.

Since his retirement he enjoyed traveling and playing with his grandson and being Mr. Fixit for his family.

John was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Amelia and Julia.

His survivors include his wife, Jacqueline, at home; a son, John P. Gallucci, and grandson, Anthony Gallucci, and a daughter, Helyn L. Gallucci of Oneonta; his brothers and their wives, Arthur and Antoinette Gallucci, and Frank and Aida Gallucci; a brother-in-law, Richard LaSalle and his wife, Cindy; his nieces, Marie and JoAnne and their families; and his nephews, Mike, Steven and Mark and their families.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends called on Tuesday evening, Oct. 14, 2003, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family was in attendance.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Adolph Fred Born

NORFOLK — A service of death and resurrection in the United Methodist Tradition for 69-year-old Adolph Fred Born, of Mercy Nursing Home in Watertown, will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at 7 p.m. at the Buckton United Methodist Church, with William Bond officiating.

Mr. Born died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at the Mercy Nursing Home in Watertown. Arrangements are with the Buck Funeral Home in Norfolk.

Mr. Born is survived by his daughter, Mrs. William K. Virginia Bond, Norfolk; and two grandchildren, Jarrett and Rebekkah Bond, Norfolk.

Mr. Born was born in Passaic, N.J., on Sept. 18, 1934, son of Adolph and Anna Hefti Born.

He married Shirley K. Becker on Nov. 26, 1955. She died on April 6, 2000.

He was a self-employed brass polisher and owned and operated "The Bright Shop" in Worcester.

He was a member of the Word of Faith Fellowship in Maryland.

Donations may be made to the Buckton United Methodist Church, care of Vivian Proper, 1000 County Route 49, Winthrop, NY 13697.

Carol P. Lewis

COOPERSTOWN — Carol P. Lewis, Sc.D., research scientist emeritus, died Oct. 1, 2003, in Umea, Sweden. She was 69 years old.

Dr. Lewis received a B.A. from Radcliff College, an M.A. in teaching from Johns Hopkins University, an M.S.W., an M.P.H., and a Sc.D. in behavioral science/health education from the University of Maryland, School of Social Work.

Before her retirement, she was a research scientist with the Bassett Research Institute for 13 years.

Lewis' career was devoted to the prevention and control of chronic diseases as well as a longtime advocate of mental health services for the underserved.

Dr. Lewis co-authored many research studies and publications on the epidemiology of illnesses. Much of her research focused on health problems related to cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Lewis supervised local community health programs, including the Otsego-Schoharie Healthy Heart Program and Otsego Public Health Partnership.

Dr. Lewis is survived by her son, Brenton Creelman of Beaufort; and her daughter, Dr. Monica Creelman-O'Donahue of New York City.

Lewis' eldest son, Peter Creelman, died in 2001.

Carol was a dedicated worker and spirited person who loved to travel. She will be greatly missed.

The Rev. Doug Burleigh will conduct a memorial service on Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. in the Clark Auditorium, Bassett Healthcare. All are welcome.

Howard Youmans

SOUTHBOROUGH, Mass. — Howard Dickinson Youmans, 82, of Southborough, died Sept. 28, 2003, at his home, after a struggle with cancer.

Mr. Youmans was a metallurgical engineer for Morgan Construction Company of Worcester for many years.

Mr. Youmans is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Patricia (Walker) Youmans, of Southborough; and his children, James Salisbury of Portland, Maine, Ward Youmans of Shrewsbury, and Ann Nagle of Carmel, Ind.

A family service was held at St. Marks Church on Monday.

Memorial contributions may be sent in his memory to U. Mass Memorial Home Health Care and Hospice, 650 Lincoln St., Worcester, MA 01605.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Morris Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Southborough.

Estelle M. Siebert

DELHI — Estelle M. Siebert, 76, of Dunham Road, Delhi, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born on April 8, 1927, in Richmond Hills, the daughter of William and Lillian (Stratton) Hassell.

She married John J. Siebert Sr. on Aug. 16, 1946.

She attended Secaucas High School in New Jersey, where she graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1943.

Estelle's love and life was spent giving time to her family and sharing her love of sewing, cooking and computers with them. She was an exceptional seamstress and will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and also for her patience and generous heart.

She was a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post No. 809 of Little Ferry, N.J.

She is survived by her husband, John J. Siebert Sr., of Delhi; a sister, Lorraine Gibbs of Hornsdale, Pa.; three daughters, Cheryl and George Flavell of Franklin, Sharon Siebert of Hillsborough, N.J., and Donna Siebert and Charles Defee of Tillson; a son, John J. Siebert Jr. of Traveler's Rest, S.C.; 19 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Edna (Gustafson) James of Charlotte, N.C.

Memorial services will he held on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with Elder John Newton of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Hamden officiating.

There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Frederick Davis

LEESBURG, Fla. — Frederick (Spence) Davis passed away Oct. 8, 2003, in Leesburg.

Spence was born April 12, 1942, in Kingston. He lived in Cobleskill for several years and moved to Florida in 1981.

Spence is survived by his wife, Priscilla Davis, of Leesburg; his sons, Brian Davis and wife of Buffalo, George and Sally Jenkins and Donald and Madeline Jenkins of East Worcester; daughters, Tammy Jenkins of Ocoee, Fla., and Terri and David Lorette of Worcester; brothers, Stewart Davis of Mechanic Falls, Maine, Wayne and Pat Davis of Ocoee, and Lee Davis of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Betsy Smith of Balston Spa; and 14 grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Ninabelle Davis, Richmondville.

Spence served in the Air Force. He was active with the Boy Scouts. He was a member for several years with the American Legion, Moose and the Eagles.

A memorial service was held Oct. 11, 2003, at 2 p.m. in Southlake Eagles, Fla.

Steve Egnaczak

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. — Steve Egnaczak, 89, of Bullhead City, passed away Sept. 22, 2003.

He was born Aug. 23, 1914, in Olean.

Steve was active in the CCC for many years. After moving to Sidney, he worked for the Bendix Corporation and was a member of the Sacred Heart Church and an active member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by one brother, Tom and his wife, Marian; two stepdaughters, Carol and Terry; a stepson, Stanley; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Steve loved making things with his scroll saw for all his friends.

Arrangements were by Desert Lawn Funeral Home, Crematory and Cemetery.
