James R. Durkee

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — James Russell Durkee, 70, of Fredericksburg, Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital.

He worked for the Free Lance-Star in the Distributing Department. Mr. Durkee also worked for the Highway Department in Otsego County, and served 22 years in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of the American Legion in Cooperstown, was involved with the Drum & Bugle Corps in Schenevus, collected fire memorabilia and loved sports.

Surviving are his wife, Meryle L. Durkee; two daughters, Kim Zuk and her husband, Andrew, of Oneonta, and Donna McLeod of Ohio; a son, James Russell Durkee Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Scranton, Pa.; two sisters, Edna Louise Fritts of Colorado and Mary Jane Foster of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; a brother, Robert M. Durkee of New Mexico; and four grandchildren, Laura Doenges and her husband, Sean, A.J. Zuk, Kellie Durkee and James Russell Durkee III.

Mr. Durkee was preceded in death by his parents, Beatrice and John Gordon Durkee; and a brother, John Durkee.

A funeral was held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Interment will be in Quantico National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fly Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Fly Creek, NY 13337.

Lois Winslow

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mrs. Lois Vickerson Winslow, 82, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

She was born Feb. 3, 1921, in North River, Prince Edward Island, Canada, the daughter of James H. and Eva Vickerson.

On Oct. 15, 1948, she married Edwin Winslow in Cooperstown. He predeceased her in 1997.

Lois was a member of Auxiliary Legion and the Christian Women of Richfield Springs.

She was an avid hunter, spent time at auctions, loved to play cards, bingo, and she loved to stop at garage sales. She worked at a slaughter house in Schuyler Lake.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, William (Bill) Winslow of Johnstown, Edwin J. and Jo-Ann Winslow of Laurens, and Larry E. and Michele Winslow of Richfield Springs; a daughter, Donna (Winslow) Hall of Cooperstown; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Springfield Center Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20, at the funeral home.

Contributions in Mrs. Winslow's memory may be made to the East Springfield Center Emergency Response Team, P.O. Box 358, Springfield Center, NY 13468.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Bernard R. Austin

WEST ONEONTA — Bernard R. "Bernie" Austin, 85, died at his home on Friday, Oct. 17, 2003.

He was born June 16, 1918, in Gouverneur, to Varick and Ida Powell Austin.

In August of 1948, Bernie married Flossie M. Houck, who predeceased him in 1995.

Bernie worked as a self-employed painter for many years. He was a member of the West Oneonta Baptist Church. He was a regular at the breakfast group at Nick's Diner, where he loved visiting and solving all the problems of the day. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it and was genuinely interested in people.

Bernie is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Earl Mills of Memphis, N.Y.; grandchildren, Valerie Daly, Michael Mills, Marcia Brown and Gerri Jalosky; 14 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, wife, son Lynn McClenon, brothers Varick "Buster" Austin, Raymond Austin and Henry "Hank" Austin, and sister Pauline Vincent.

Calling hours for Bernie will be Sunday, Oct. 19, from 3 to 5 p.m. with the family in attendance at Bookbout Funeral Home, 37 Main St., Oneonta.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, by the Rev. John Dougherty.

Interment will follow in the Walton Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Mark R. Clapper Sr.

TORRINGTON, Conn. — Mark R. "Big Guy" Clapper Sr., 47, of Torrington, passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 27, 2003, while visiting family in Cooperstown.

Mark was born on July 19, 1956, in Binghamton.

He married Rose Lucia on Sept. 29, 1978.

Surviving, besides his wife of 25 years, are his daughters, Katrina Soucier and husband Chris, and Mindy Clapper and companion Edward Skutt; one son, Mark Clapper Jr. and companion Jen Petrizia; four grandchildren, Mark Clapper III, Jade, SaLena and Tristan Soucier; a maternal grandmother, Florence Constable; father, Raymond Clapper Jr. and stepmother, Mary, of Syracuse; mother, Barbara Clapper of Nevada; three brothers, David, Terry "Mike" and Raymond; two sisters, Linda and Jerri Lynn, all from this area; four brothers, Donald, Brian, Wayne and Richard; three sisters, Cheryl, Dawn and Debbie, all from Torrington area; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Herbert F. Miller

MESA, Ariz. — A memorial service for the Rev. Herbert Frank Miller, who passed away Sept. 2, 2003, in Mesa, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at the Mount Vision Cemetery on county Route 11B in Mount Vision.

Burnett Burnside

BLOOMVILLE — Burnett A. Burnside Jr., 21, of Bloomville, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born Aug. 25, 1982, in Oneonta, the son of Burnett and Evelyn (Seeley) Burnside Sr.

A lifelong area resident, Burnett worked for the town of Kortright in the maintenance department.

He loved fishing and hunting, as well as watching NASCAR races.

Burnett will be remembered as a friend to all, with a very forgiving nature. He was loved as an uncle and brother.

Survivors include his parents at home in Bloomville; five brothers, Jeffery Burnside, Sidney, Christopher and Pattie Speenburgh, Delhi, Walter J. and Lynn Speenburgh, Otego, Steven B. and Monica Burnside, Bainbridge, and Patrick R. Burnside, Bloomville; his grandmother, Wreatha Clum, Bloomville and grandfather, Harry Clum, Bloomville; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his grandfather, Burnett Burnside, and grandmother, Edith M. Burnside.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi. The family will be in attendance in the evening.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Paul Hartt of St. John's and the Rev. Samuels of Bassett Hospital, officiating. Burial will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Delaware County ARC or the Delaware County Animal Shelter.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

William V. Bantz

BAINBRIDGE — William Vernon Bantz, 90, of 634 County Route 38, Bainbridge, passed away Friday evening, Oct. 17, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Sept. 23, 1913, in Mount Vernon, the son of the late William and Lillian Gilson Bantz.

In 1933, William married Audrey Hyer in Elizabeth, N.J. She predeceased him on June 18, 2002.

William was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving his country during World War II.

He retired in 1975 as an electrician for the Con Edison Company in New York City.

He was a devoted father to his children. Mr. Bantz was an avid bowler and enjoyed the outdoors.

Funeral and committal services will he at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Douglas Horne, pastor of the Afton and Nineveh Presbyterian churches, officiating. Entombment will be in the Ferncliff Cemetery in the town of Greenburgh.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Pat Bantz of Lancaster, Pa.; and his daughter and her companion, Cheryl Daughtrey and Gary Burghardt of Bainbridge.

Friends are invited to call from 2 p.m. until time of services at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.

Betty E. Rosher

ONEONTA — Betty E. Rosher of Oneonta, beloved wife of John, and mother of David and Barbara, passed away at her residence on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, after a brief illness.

A private memorial service will be held later at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are under the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Richard L. Reuter

MORRIS — Richard L. Reuter, passed away on Oct. 17, 2003, of Morris, formerly of Cresskill, for 25 years. He was 83.

He was the beloved husband of the late Ann nee Brown.

He was the devoted father of four children, Patricia Schultz, Larry, Tom and John; and the loving grandfather of 11 grandchildren.

He was honorably discharged from the Civilian Conservation Corps and was a World War II Army veteran with the Merrill's Marauders at Burma.

He was employed by the Cresskill Board of Education as custodian.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, at noon, at the Moritz Funeral Home of Closter. Burial in George Washington Cemetery in Paramus.

Visiting hours are today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Moritz Funeral Home, 348 Closter Dock Road, Closter; (201) 768-4200.

Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Faversham W. Livengood

CHERRY VALLEY — Faversham W. Livengood, 89, passed away Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, in Williamsburg, Va.

He was a longtime resident of Cherry Valley, but in recent years resided with his daughter in Wakefield, Va.

Mr. Livengood was born in New York City and resided in Hillsdale, N.J., for 65 years.

He attended Hillsdale Schools, Rutgers University and Stevens Institute.

He managed Rohr's Sporting Goods, Closter, for many years and retired from Pasberg Mgmt., Newark, N.J., in 1979. Fave was an enthusiastic sportsman, hunter and gardener.

He was predeceased by his wife, Rowlinda Bayldan.

Survivors include daughters, Rowlinda Copeland and husband, Joseph of Wakefield, Va., and Hester Ann Livengood of St. Johnsville; a brother, Ralph Livengood of Lewisberg, Pa.; a sister, Grace Kitzinger of Williamsburg, Va.; and a niece and nephew.

Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at the Ottman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating. Visitation will precede the funeral from 7 to 8 p.m.

Committal services and burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, in the Cherry Valley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Livengood's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Rescue Squad, Cherry Valley, NY.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
