John D. Catella

ONEONTA — Born Nov. 24, 1910, Staten Island.

Mother: Lousia Libertone.

Father: Gennaro Davano.

Brothers: Lou, Albert, Joe.

Sisters: Rose (Mayo), Julia (Bennett).

Stepbrothers: Pete and Donald Meyers.

Stepsister: Ruth Myers Simmons.

Half-brothers: James and Fred Catella.

At age 10, moved to Margaretville.

1922-1924, Lit the Gas Lights throughout the Village standing on his bicycle.

1925, Moved to Cobleskill.

1926, Moved to Oneonta to work at Delaware and Hudson Railroad.

Served four years with Company G.

1932-1936, Joined the Navy on the U.S.S. Augusta the Flag Ship of the Asiatic Fleet with Captain Nimits, crossing equator three times. Taking miles of 8mm movies and snapping photos of Philippines, China, Japan, Siam, Singapore and Australia.

1936-1938, Returns to Oneonta, delivered ice in the summer, tended furnace fires at the theater in winters, served two years with Company I.

1937, April 19, married Bessie Hall McRorie .

1939, Worked at Spaulding Bakery and on call fireman.

1944-1949, Worked four and half more years at Delaware and Hudson Railroad.

1949-1959, Here comes help Texaco Gas Station on Main Street.

1959-1972, Worked and retired as Junior High School Custodian.

Always on the go by car, train and plane. Trips to every state of this Union, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Scotland.

Plowing snow every winter for friends.

Attending Emmons Methodist Church.

1987-2002, Every day worked The Emmons Farm Water System.

He will help anyone anytime. 1932, Fort Edwards, while working on the railroad he forgot his shovel, the boss said no work, as he was walking back to town he heard a woman calling for help. Her 2-3 year old had fallen into the Canal Water. He jumped in saved her life. He still remembers that when he found her under water, about 35 yards out, she was on her back kicking her feet.

Helped many travelers on State Highway 7 who had auto problems. If he could not fix it they stayed at his home until repaired. Always welcome with a meal and/or overnight accommodations without pay.

He loves to bowl, even with the pros, swimming, scuba diving, acrobats, cribbage, pinochle, every week visiting with friends, family, hospitals and nursing homes.

Before starting a family a great friend passed away giving life. Did not hesitate in bringing him home, Robert Hilsinger.

Three daughters B. Luise Jessup, husband David, John and wife Julie, Jessica and husband Eric Galliani.

Joyce Pattengill, husband James deceased, Vikki and husband Matt Fogt, Eric and wife Lorrie.

Doris Wayman, husband Timothy, Brenda and husband Kevin Colosa, grandchildren Thereon and Zackary, Kathleen Duncan and husband David, grandchildren Trevor and Jocely.

John passed away Oct. 19, 2003. He will be deeply missed by so many loving family and friends. There will not be a funeral or memorial. No flowers. You may give in memory of John to the charity of your choice.

Anna H. Goodrich

DELHI — Anna H. (Peggy) Goodrich, 81, a lifetime resident of Delaware County, passed away Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center.

She was born Anna Margaret on Aug. 7, 1922, in Meredith, the daughter of Donald and Alice (McKinney) Holloway.

She married Clifford Dean Goodrich in Delhi on Oct. 2, 1949. He predeceased her on Sept. 5, 1969.

Peggy was educated in the Meridale Schoolhouse and also in Camden, N.J. She received a college Preparatory Diploma of Northfield Seminary in East Northfield, Mass., graduating in 1941. She also attended Delhi College for a business education.

She was employed at Bendix Scintilla and R.H. Lewis Company. She worked for the Delaware County Clerk's Office for 25 years where she attained Deputy status. For five years she was employed at Social Services in Hendersonville, N.C. On her return to Delaware County she took the position of secretary at the First Presbyterian Church in Delhi. She held the position for nine years.

Peggy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 50 years, in which she was a choir member, an Esther (Hannah) Circle member, a Circle treasurer, a member of the Bell Ringer Choir and a member of the Altar Guild. She had deep roots in Meridale Farms and contributed much to the history of it.

She is survived by a cousin, Grace Robertson of Bloomville and many other cousins, nieces and nephews. Also surviving is a good friend and care giver, Irene Sander of Delhi.

She was predeceased by her cousin, Dora Bell.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Miriam Hathaway officiating. Burial will follow the services in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in Peggy's memory can be made to the First Presbyterian Memorial Fund.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

James V. Govern

TROY — James V. Govern Jr., 34, of Hampton Place, died suddenly at his residence on Oct. 19, 2003.

Born in Stamford, he had been a resident of the Capitol Region for many years.

He was a graduate of LaSalle Institute in Troy and of R.I.T. in Rochester. He was employed by the New York State Bill Drafting Commission.

Jim is survived by his mother, Melinda Govern, of Loudonville; his father, James Govern Sr., of Stamford; a sister, Michele Meister of East Greenbush; his aunts, Marilyn Phelan of Loudonville and Marian Govern and Eleanore Govern, both of Stamford; uncle, Toni Laux of Stamford; cousins, Timothy Keller and Kimberly Keller; his grandmother, Ann Ryder; and a niece, Emily Meister.

Jim enjoyed travel, workouts and golf and had a hole-in-one last year that he was very proud of. He is an organ donor.

Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the W.J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Ave., Rensselaer. The Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Williams Road, North Greenbush, where Jim served at Mass and taught religious instructions.

A graveside service will be held Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.

Sharon A. Coe

SCHUYLER LAKE — Sharon Ann Murdock Coe, 59, of Tunnicliff Road, entered into eternal rest on Saturday morning, Oct. 18, 2003, in her home. She had the comfort of her close friends and loving family at her side.

She was born on July 22, 1944, in Cooperstown, daughter of the late Gordon C. and Elizabeth (Betty) VanAuken Cushman.

A lifelong Schuyler Lake resident she was educated in Schuyler Lake and Richfield Spring Central Schools. While growing up she enjoyed her family, Elvis and had a passion for dancing and roller-skating.

On July 28, 1962, she married Richard H. Murdock Sr. in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs. A devoted union for over than 22 years. He preceded her in death on July 15, 1984.

At one time she had worked for Sure-Catch in Richfield Springs and from 1977 to 1996 she was employed by The Meadows in Cooperstown as a certified nursing assistant.

She was a member of the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, the Bowling League and the Exeter Historical Society. In her leisure time she liked to crochet, work in her flower and vegetable gardens, watch the Food Networks on television and cook. She particularly liked spending time with friends, family, grandchildren, playing Phase 10 with her son Bobby, cuddling her beloved cat, Sampson, and enjoying watching the deer.

Sharon was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She made every attempt to support her children in their school activities.

The years hold precious memories of Sharon who was special. She filled our lives with happiness and sweet feelings that we will carry in our hearts forever.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Londa and Barry Webster of South Valley, and Mindy Murdock-Blix and Barry Blix of Chandler, Ariz.; two sons, CW-3 US Army Richard H. Murdock Jr. and daughter-in-law, Jennifer of Stafford, Va., and Robert C. Coe III son of Robert C. Coe II of Schuyler Lake; one brother, David and his wife, Sharon Cushman of Peoria, Ariz.; two sisters, Donna and her husband, Warren Williams Sr. of West Winfield, and Pamela Cushman of Big Cabin, Okla.; a sister-in-law, Robin and her husband, Bill Fernalld of Richfield Springs; one uncle, Frank VanAuken of East Springfield; five grandchildren; Zackary, Billy, Kaitlyn, BJ and Hailey; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and two special people who she mothered like her own, Paul and Lissa Allison, and their children.

Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, pastor, Terry Brant of the First Christian Church, South Valley, will officiate. Interment will follow in Schuyler Lake Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends today, from 7 until 9 p.m.

The family wishes to thank the Catskill Area Hospice, Joan Mims and Eleanor Wightman for making Sharon's final wishes possible.

James C. Earl

UNADILLA — James C. Earl, 81, of Unadilla, passed away Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at his home.

He was born Sept. 2, 1922, in Unadilla, the son of the late J. Stanley and Ruth (Chapman) Earl.

Jim married the former Marilynn Brogden on Nov. 15, 1951, in Elmont, Long Island.

Jim was a lifelong resident of Unadilla and for many years owned and operated Earl's Dairy Farm before retiring in 1986.

He was a graduate of Unadilla Central School and Cornell University. Jim was elected to the Unatego Central School Board of Education in 1963 and served as president from 1983-1994. He also served for 10 years on the Board of the Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES and in 1996 received the New York State School Board's Association Annual Everett R. Dyer Award for outstanding school board service.

He was a leader of local and state agricultural groups and professional organizations, and was a member and leader of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church of Unadilla.

Jim is survived by his wife, Marilynn Earl, of Unadilla; two daughters and a son-in-law, Ruth A. and Joseph Knapp of Unadilla and Diane C. Earl of Oneonta; three sons and a daughter-in-law, James H. Earl of Unadilla, Joseph S. Earl of San Diego, Calif., and John T. and Shirley Earl of Unadilla; his brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Martha Earl of Unadilla; his grandchildren, Meriah Earl, Sarah Earl, Casey Knapp, Jacob Earl, Jo Lynn Earl, and Shannon Guziel; his great-grandchildren, Justin Knapp, Josiah Knapp, Paige and Hunter Herron and Michael Earl; a cousin, Marion Hollister of Windsor; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Herbert Earl; his sister, Dorothy Earl; and a grandson, Brian Knapp.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church of Unadilla, with the Rev. Joel T. Grigg, rector, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Matthew's Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, (directly off exit 10 of I-88), Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Main Street, Unadilla, NY 13849 or the Wells Bridge Fire Department, Wells Bridge, NY 13859.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.
