David G. Wellman

HARTWICK — David G. Wellman, 45, of Hartwick, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003.

David was born on Nov. 18, 1957, in Cooperstown, a son of Gerard ("Rod") A. and Catherine (Platt) Wellman.

He married Sarah Mallory on Aug. 31, 2001, in Hartwick.

Raised in Hartwick, David attended the Cooperstown Central School, graduating with the Class of 1976. In October of that year, he entered the United States Air Force and served his country until being honorably discharged on Sept. 11, 1982, with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

After returning to Hartwick, he worked with his father at the Hartwick Garage and then moved to Rochester where he was employed by Eastman-Kodak. A year later he moved back to Hartwick and was employed by the F.N. Burt Box Company in Oneonta before being employed by the United States Postal Service in Cooperstown as a Rural Mail Carrier.

Active with the National Rifle Association, he was a member of the Hartwick and Milford Rod and Gun Clubs.

David is survived by his wife, Sarah; one son, Christopher David Wellman, and one stepson, Joshua Morris, both of Hartwick; his parents, Rod and Catherine Wellman of Hartwick; his mother-in-law, Barbara Barry and her husband, Douglas, of Oneonta; and his father-in-law, Ray Mallory of Silver Springs; one sister, Mrs. Janet L. Fonseca and her husband, Luis Fonseca Sr., of Rochester; one brother, Bruce A. Wellman Sr., and his wife, Julie, of Hartwick; and his nieces and nephews, Bruce Wellman Jr. and his companion, Jessica Ray, and Brian Wellman and Kimberly Wellman, all of Hartwick, Luis Fonseca Jr. and Eric Fonseca of Rochester, Jeri Rose Mallory and Daniel Mallory of Las Vegas, Nev., and Cody and Travis French and Warren Quigly, all of Davenport.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, in the First Baptist Church of Hartwick, with Pastor Phillip Sell officiating. Friends may join the family for a time of refreshment and fellowship at the Hartwick Fire Hall immediately following the funeral service.

There will be no calling hours and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Leatherstocking Friends of the NRA, in care of Robert Pierce, Chairman, 125 Crestview Lane, West Oneonta, NY 13861, or to a charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Roger A. Klein

STAMFORD — Roger A. Klein, 79, of Stamford, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at his home.

Before his retirement in 1982, Mr. Klein was employed as a salesman for many years, which includes Prudential Insurance Company in Poughkeepsie.

Mr. Klein was a World War II veteran, Foreign Service in the 7th Heavy Bomb Group, 492nd and 493rd Bomb Squadron stationed in India, and the 93rd Fighter Squadron and 428th Fighter Squadron in China.

He was a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church, Delhi, and member of Stamford Post 6292, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the 7th Bomb Group Historical Foundation.

Mr. Klein was born Oct. 20, 1923, in Poughkeepsie, a son of the late Harry A. and Edna Miller Klein.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, the former Meliene F. Propp; a daughter, Katherine Dibella of Kingston; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Lori Klein of Cottekill, son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Stephanie of Greenville, and son, David of Phoenix, Ariz. He was the grandfather of Natasha, Mallory, Breena and Miranda Klein and Rebecca, John and Michael Dibella. And several nieces and nephews also survive.

Brother of the late Richard Klein and Mary Birdsall.

Roger leaves this world with the love and respect of his children and friends for his loving dedication and care of his wife, Meliene.

Memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church of Greenville and Norton Hill, Route 81, on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Stamford Rescue Squad, Stamford, NY 12167.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Clarence Rosenthal

COBLESKILL — Clarence H. Rosenthal returned to the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003. He was 98.

Clarence was born Nov. 5, 1904, in Camden, the son of Henry B. and Vina (Brewster) Rosenthal.

He was predeceased by his wife, Vera; and son, Clarence Jr.

He is survived by sons, Robert (Anneliese) of Schoharie, and Lauren (Helen) of Rochester; grandsons, Tom of Albany, and Brian (Mary) of Delhi; great-granddaughter, Ashley of Delhi; and nieces and nephews.

Clarence was a longtime resident of Cobleskill. He worked for Niagara Mohawk for 38 years, retiring in 1968. He then worked part-time for Rodeweg Chevrolet for several years. His last three years were spent in Rochester.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester, officiating. Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

Arrangements by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Robert W. Kimbark

ONEONTA — Robert Warren Kimbark, 81 years of age, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie, Cobleskill.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the T.J. McGowen and Sons Funeral Home, Inc., 113 Lake Road E. Congers, with burial to follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery, Nanuet.

Calling hours will be offered on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home.

Frances L. Kane

UNADILLA — Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, the world lost a true lady. Frances Louana Kane, 69 years old, died Wednesday in her home.

She is known for her strength of will and her special gift as wife, mother and grandmother. She will be remembered always by her family and many, many friends.

Frances was born Sept. 30, 1934, in Franklin, the daughter of James and Pearl (Abers) Constable. Fran has been a lifetime Unadilla resident and retiree of Mead-Westvaco of Sidney.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Walter James Kane, of Unadilla; her sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Sharon of Jamestown, Jeffrey and Chris of Unadilla, Michael and Karen of Bainbridge, and Sandra of Sidney; and her sister, Joyce Ruling of Unadilla. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Zachary, Corey, Cody, Seth, Sam, Claire and Benjamin Karl. In addition she has several brothers and sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Clarence and Robert Case; and brother-in-law, Robert Ruling.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in Fran's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Ellen Thompson

AUBURN — Ellen Thompson, 83, of Auburn, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at Newark Manor Nursing Home.

Born and raised in Worcester, she was the daughter of the late Arthur S. and Chloa A. Butler Mooney.

She was a 1937 graduate of Worcester Central High School and a 1940 graduate of Oneonta State. In 1951 she received her master's degree in elementary education from Syracuse University.

Mrs. Thompson taught for 22 years for the Jamesville Dewitt School District.

She was Navy Wave veteran serving her country in World War II and a member of the Salt City Blue Unit 80.

She is survived by a daughter, Sherry Nesci (John) of Red Creek; a grandson, Adam Paetow; and by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Amy Paetow in May of 1996; and by a brother, Arthur P. Mooney in 1966.

Private graveside services will be held in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester.

Langham Funeral Home of Auburn is handling the arrangements.

Thaddeus Lopienski

SELKIRK — Thaddeus (Ted) Lopienski Sr., 75, of Selkirk, went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 20, 2003.

Ted was born on Feb. 20, 1928, in Brooklyn, to the late Chester and Catherine (Hyjeck) Lopienski.

Ted served as a member of the 25th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Force stationed at ITMNI Air Base in Japan. After he completed his service time, he worked on his fathers farm (1947-1952) known as Lopienski Hill which was located on the outskirts of Oneonta.

For 39 years Ted worked for Otis Elevator. This brought him to the Capital region. In his earlier years he serviced elevators throughout the region (Gemtantown, Albany, Hudson, Catskill and Glens Falls). Then he spent 32 years servicing the elevators in the Alfred E. Smith State Building.

Ted was a Sergeant of Arms in the Polish Community Center on Washington Avenue, Ext. Commander of the VFW Post 9495 in Ravena. And he served as trustee at the United Methodist Church in South Bethlehem. He also attended the Evangelical Church in Ravena.

Ted was predeceased by his wife, Leona Norvelle (Benjamin) Lopienski.

He is survived by four children, Norvelle, Thaddeus Jr., (Pam), Stephen (Carole), Michael (Nancy). He was the grandfather of Philip and Brian (Joan) Goodrich, Bruce Lasher, John Brandon, and Christine Lopienski. And his great-grandchildren, Calvin and Julie Goodrich. He was the brother of Bernard (Libby), Eugene, and Stanley (Carole), Stella (Jim) and Wanda.

All those who fondly remember Ted and would like to share their grief and memories with us are invited to the Durant Funeral Home, 17 Languish Place, (opposite the Stone Ends Restaurant), Glenmont, on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Anna V. Taggart

FRANKLIN — Anna V. Taggart, 83, of Franklin, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at home.

She was born on Feb. 4, 1920, in Holland, the daughter of John and Catherine (Riensma) Vanderzee.

She married John A. Taggart Jr. on Nov. 28, 1940, in Walton. He passed away on June 19, 1991, after over 50 years of marriage.

Anna was a loving mother and housewife. She enjoyed gardening and working at the Franklin Free Library. She especially enjoyed playing bridge with her friends.

She was a member of the Friends of the Franklin Free Library, the Washington Reading Circle, the Ouleout Valley Historical Society, and the Franklin United Methodist Church.

She is survived by six sons and their spouses and one daughter, John A. and Joanne Taggart, James A. and Lindy Taggart, Kathy Zahar, Joseph E. and Sue Taggart, Jeffery R. and Lori Taggart, Scott A. and Patty Taggart, and Peter V. and Ellie Taggart; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fredie Cranston and Katie Warner; sister-in-law, Ann Taggart; several nieces and nephews, and many close friends.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Franklin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor officiating. Burial will follow at the Ouleout Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, today, Oct. 24, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations be made to the Franklin United Methodist Church, Main Street, Franklin, NY 13775 or to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Howard J. Lull

EDMESTON — Howard J. Lull Jr., 84, of Edmeston, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at his home.

He was born June 19, 1919, in Oneonta, the son of Howard J. Lull Sr., and Glenadore (Ackley) Lull.

He married Rena Allen on Aug. 1, 1944, at the Methodist Church in Biloxi, Miss.

Howard, affectionately known as Coach, retired from Edmeston Central School where he had taught Social Studies, Physical Education, Health, and Drivers Ed. Additionally, he coached football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, golf and bowling.

He was a member of the Wharton Valley American Legion Post No. 1311, serving his country as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Corps from 1942-1945.

Howard was inducted to the Section IV New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Hall of Fame 1992, and the Tri Valley Hall of Fame in 2001.

He was a past member of the Edmeston Fire Department, the New York State Teachers Association, and past president of the Edmeston Rotary.

Howard enjoyed life. He encouraged many students to go the extra mile not only in sports but in their life.

He was a terrific friend, loving husband and super dad, and his granddaughters' idol.

Howard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rena; his daughters, Rena Mae Lull of Cooperstown, and Rita Lee and Roger Clark of Lyons; and two granddaughters, Karen and her husband, Brian Hart and Elizabeth Clark.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Edmeston, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht and the Rev. John Blackman, officiating.

A family reception will be held at the Edmeston Fire House following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Howard's name to the Edmeston Emergency Squad, envelopes will be available at the church.
